The BBQ was excellent! We stopped here on a Saturday afternoon while driving from Austin down to the Gulf Coast. The brisket was excellent. The ribs were super tasty. We had the beans (excellent smoky flavor), firecracker corn (unique taste and ingredients) and the tater salad as our sides. All 3 were fresh and tasty. This location is small, not a ton of seats. Also one thing to note is that there are no public restrooms, but quaintly enough you can go to the drug store on the corner a short walk away and use them. This was a hidden gem. I stumbled up on this on my travels to the refinery. By me being in cattle country I wanted to see what the local bbq was. This place has a lot of history! Alot of signatures on the wall and the hospitality here is on point. The dishes are massive portions, so please come hungry. The flavor profile just could've been a little stronger on the smoke. This is my second review of Pioneer BBQ. I give the food high ratings; I have never been disappointed in the food. There is one thing I severely dislike about Pioneer BBQ. There are not adequate restrooms for customers. IF, and note I said IF they let you use the restroom you have to walk THROUGH the kitchen to the restoom in the back. It is an awkward situation and feeling to have to walk through the kitchen to use the restroom. It just does not feel right. I'm not sure this situation would meet health codes or not; I think not. The last time I was in Pioneer and asked one of the owners to use the restroom. I had go in a very urgent way. She told me I could not use the restroom. I explained I had to go in an urgent way she suggested I go literally 3 blocks down and use Dairy Queen's restroom; unacceptable...and it is that far. If I were Dairy Queen I would not want another business routing people to my business to use the restroom. And I like to wash my hands before eating and after if need be; to do that you have to walk through the kitchen into the back. I don't like that. I used to eat at Pioneer very often; I have not been back since the above incident. And when I went to Pioneer BBQ I always spent 50-80 bucks because I like to take extra food home for later. I really liked the food at Pioneer, but the restroom situation is unacceptable. Doubt I will ever return to Pioneer BBQ. read more

My husband and I were driving from Georgetown down to Port Aransas. It was 1:30 pm and were hungry. We were approaching Dixon, TX and I used Yelp to find a place to eat Lunch. We decided to stop at Pioneer BBQ. It was fantastic!! The owners sat down at table next to us and tried to eat their lunch, after serving us. I had a monstrously big, juicy brisket sandwich. The sauce was great! He had a rib plate. He said it was "some of the best ribs" he had ever had. The side of spicy slaw is a must. Unfortunately, I was too full to get the cobbler, but it looked delicious. The building is located along the main drag of a very small town and I guess you could call it a hole in the wall. Giving this place a 1 star for the service.. I have been stopping here for a few years and have never received bad service until this past Thursday. We always stop here to get food for my dad. I asked the young lady behind the counter if she would please wrap the food in foil and she rudely said she was going to put it in a bag. I told her I had a ways to go and asked her again if she could just please put it in foil. Told her there was never an issue before and she again told me she would put the bbq and the sides in a bag.. at that point I told her ring me up I just wanted to continue with my destination.. My fiancé and I popped in for a quick lunch. Wow did it hit the spot! We ended up sharing a plate because prices are a bit high, but both of us walked away with our bellys full. We got the brisket and ribs plate. The brisket was so flavorful and juicy, and the ribs fell right off the bone! Also, whatever they're mixing in with their BBQ sauce is AMAZING! If they had a bottle of it that we could've bought, we would've bought it! In addition to the meat and BBQ sauce, we got their creamed corn and cheesy broccoli (I don't know if that's what they're called on the menu) and both complimented the meat so well. We have driven past Pioneer a number of times and always said next time we will stop. This place is a hole in the wall and if you blink as you drive through Nixon you will miss it. Well the flag was out, which means they are open, so we decided to finally try their BBQ. Having just had a full BBQ meal the previous day we opted for the 1/4 chicken (whole chicken 4 Qtrs) to go. This was probably the best chicken I have ever had. It was juicy and tender with just the right amount of smoke to let you know it was smoked properly. I stopped by Pioneer BBQ yesterday and had the brisket and rib two meat plate. For sides I had the pinto beans and firecracker corn. The ribs were really good. They fell off the bone and had a real tasty outer bark. It was a very good choice. My brisket was also really tasty with a good bark but one slice could have been a little more tender. It was still good enough that I didn't leave a piece on the plate. The BBQ sauce was really good as well. They do some kind of two style mix that really works. The beans were good and I really liked the firecracker corn. The staff was friendly and it's in an old historic building on main street. I live about fourteen miles away and will definitely go back. I gotta try the sausage next time. They're open till closing hours or until they run out of food. If the Texas flag is out they're open. Stop by if you want some good Texas BBQ. read more

This place is absolutely amazing. Bring cash they don't take cards. They have incredible ribs no sause needed but there's also very good barbecue sauce . Brisket is perfect. Sausage is killer especially when it's "caramelized". Scorpion sause is really delicious, not for the faint of heart. Barbecued beans are the best. So far I've tried the firecracker corn, barbecue beans, ribs, sausage and Brisket all great. Hope I have another reason to go to Nixon soon. read more

Ate here with the family right after they first opened a few years back. The prices were average for a bbq joint and the owner was behind the counter in the thick of the action serving customers. The meat was a bit on the fatty side for my personal preference and the sauce was definitely needed. For me, really good bbq works both with and without the sauce. This little hole in the wall will knock your socks off. Go out of your way to stop here, and bring a marker to doodle on the walls. It's small, but cozy. The food speaks for itself - but in my opinion it's some of the best BBQ I've ever had. I'm not a sausage fan, but I will eat it here, and fight you for the last piece. (It's a smooth sausage without any weird "grizzlies" in it.) The ribs are falling off the bone, the brisket is amazing, the sauce is great - I could go on and on - everything on the menu is fantastic, I simply cannot pick a favorite. If you're with a group, share one of the family packs where you get a little bit of everything - it's the only way to go. The potato salad and slaw are off the hook! The firecracker corn is not as hot as it sounds, and it's so delicious. The price is very reasonable for BBQ. They have been known to run out of certain local favorites, so go early if you can. If not, whatever they have left will be delicious, trust me. We drive over here frequently just because we cannot get enough of this couple's food.
