Stopped in this cute town for breakfast & was immediately greeted upon walking in. I regret to the get the waitress' name but she seemed so sweet & had a great attitude. Simple order with a hot drip coffee & a breakfast sandwich on a biscuit (no meat). The coffee was yummy, just really wish they had creamer to pour into & that wasn't the brand "coffee mate". I like my coffee on the light side so having to contribute more plastic with 6 or 7 of those little servings is a bugger. And just really don't like supporting that brand. Sandwich was small but delicious. Asked for a side of strawberry jam & wish there were more options available rather than smuckers. Not a 5 star spot but would definitely come back!! read more

Great place to grab lunch! The food was exactly what we were looking for, chicken tenders and burgers for the kids while on a little road trip. We all really enjoyed the chicken tenders - you can tell they are made in-house! Our waitress was very kind and patient and interior looked like you would expect on a back road. I am new to Sulphur Springs and my friend, Linda, took me to lunch at the Pioneer Cafe! Fortunately, the special of the day was fried catfish with beans and coleslaw for the sides. Just telling you how totally delicious the meal was is making my mouth water. I enjoy catfish every opportunity I have and I must tell you that their catfish was the best I have enjoyed. Believe me, I am 77 and have eaten a lot of catfish in my life. These people know how to fry catfish! read more

Home Cooking? Yes, please. We planned to be here on a Thursday for Chicken and Dressing and we have not been disappointed. Yummy! Note...this is great food you can cook at home but don't have to. Thus the name home cooking! Ms Karen is the BEST waitstaff around. Very helpful since we are first timers. She suggested the sweet potato casserole and it was worth our drive over. The ambiance is classic western right down to the music (perfect volume). Clean restrooms. Also, note, they are at a new location that is not yet to be on Google maps. Fab culture stop on Main Street stop, 5 miles off I30...and 5 mi that doesn't really assure you at all, that it was a good move). However, plod along and ye shall be rewarded. And, if you need to power up your Tesla , 6+ stations await you directly in front of the public parking lot, right across from this cute country cafe. The food was great value, home cookin' good, and love the cowboy town decor. My 1/2 order Pile Up was a tummy tucker with 1 scrambled egg that more than covered a split opened faced biscuit, atop a pile of crisp hashbrowns with 1/4" sausage patty and country gravy....everything's bigger next to TX too it seems, in Arkansas! Hub's gave me his tummy thumbs up too on a ham and cheese omelet with healthy helpings? lol, of each. He'd opt to upgrade to grits over TX toast next time, and I'm eyeing that butter pecan french toast! Waitresses were on top of their game, with frequent hot coffee fills, and checking in on dishes and any needs. Coffee was like Folgers kinda weak but always hot and actually better than expected. Sulphur Springs made Southern Living's Recommended List to visit as the posted sign touts as you enter the main town square, leaving the Cafe to return to I30 on the business loop. We chose this location for a Friday breakfast due to the glowing reviews. Unfortunately, the experience was not that great. The cafe was less that 50% full when we entered. We promptly placed our order and received our orange juice and coffee. Table after table I watched get seated and served their food before ours finally arrived...47 minutes after we placed our order. I was actually planning on just dropping a $5 to cover the coffee and OJ and walking out just as the server came with our food. The icing on the cake for my experience was that the gravy was cold and the sausage, hash browns, and bacon were burnt. 47 minutes for a basic breakfast that was cold and burnt. Perhaps I was too tan for the exceptional service others have commended them for- Small town living I guess. 2 stars for the initial prompt order taking and flavor of pancakes and gravy, albeit, cold. Great southern dishes! My wife and I split the special, fried pork chops, mashed taters and fried okra. The taters we so smooth and delicious topped with brown gravy. This place moved from it's original location near downtown. Be sure and locate the new address on Yelp page. We visited the restaurant around 1:30pm, 30 minutes before closing. The staff was incredible and quick to get our order. I ordered the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes and my wife ordered the chopped steak. Both of these are staples we've ordered before. The CFS was good but it did taste like it had been made previous to my order and the chopped steak was the same. My wife said he chopped steak was overcooked. Pioneer is a fantastic place to eat and I don't wish to take anything away from their great service and food. We live about an hour and half from Sulphur Springs and rarely make it before Pioneer closes, so our visits are precious. My desire is to just share the impact of this visit with the ownership and request that they respect the customers that come in and serve them the same great quality until you close. read more

We have eaten multiple times at Pioneer at both the old location and the new location. The food has always been good and the waitstaff pleasant and attentive. I would have given them a 4-star rating for the food and service. However, while we have enjoyed eating there when we are in town, we prefer to eat after the noon rush and usually cannot be there earlier than around 1:00. While their closing time is 2:00 it has been our experience that when we've been there by or after 1:00 cleanup begins. Sweeping and mopping floors right up to and around your tables. Waitstaff was running around in a hurry to begin their closing procedures. The first time eating at their new location, a young man running the register talked loudly the whole time about needing to get closed so he could leave because "he had things to do." This continued the entire time over the course of our meal. On a later date there we arrived earlier at 1:10 in an attempt to prevent the hurried feeling of being virtually swept out the door. The cleaning was the same with the vigorous sweeping and mopping and rushed atmosphere. Although, we ordered from their lunch special menu, we did not receive our food until 1:55. Our server made an attempt to assure us to enjoy and finish our meal. But, again, we were made to feel that we were detaining everyone from finishing up to close. I have been in business and the food service industry. Most closeup duties can be accomplished without interference to the paying customer, Once the last customer has left and out the door, only then, the sweeping and mopping should be done, for many reasons including safety. While this review has been lengthy it is with hope that Pioneer Cafe will address this issue and remedy the situation because they do have a nice restaurant and good food. But, it ruins one's dining experience when you feel dust is flying through the air and the scent of cleaning agents in the mop water is overwhelmingly strong. read more

We visited the Pioneer today for fried catfish. We have eaten there several times and were looking forward to fried catfish lunch. Okra, good and hot, broccoli rice casserole, hot and good, pinto beans, warm and good, hush puppies, cold, catfish, cold. While I understand that happens but when you ask for some hot fish and told no. Really disappointed. Our waitress ask the cook and was told no. Stopped in early one morning on my way to Arkansas, wanting to skip the usual franchise restaurants and try something local. Pioneer Cafe was the perfect place! Situated in the simple cultural surroundings of a small Texas town, the restaurant was comfortable and friendly. Karen made me feel at home and served me very quickly, even though I was in no hurry. Other locals that were there were friendly and added to the charm. With the large food portions, I was surprised how low the bill was. Everything was delicious and tasted freshly-cooked. I Rode to this place w some of the guys this Thursday morning. Upon entry our Waitress was smiling happy and engaging. NEW Menu was in a binder, (lots to choose) dark background, (menu different from other posts) and everything for breakfast you could want. It took a little time to come out, but left us w time to enjoy their special blended coffee. Fresh, no bite, not weak. Eggs cooked as ordered, FRESH everything. This is a great place to get healthy, freshly made food. Yes, you can get fried food as well, but it's really nice to have choices. My husband's grilled chicken was perhaps a bit over seasoned (too salty for his taste) but my grape chicken salad on spinach leaves was outstanding. The guacamole tasted homemade with a tiny bit of capsaicin authority. Yum! Located across the street from a sweet little public parking lot... unlittered and beautifully landscaped with the greenest plush grass lawn! This city parking lot includes a rack of Tesla Superchargers. Walk a few steps away and window shop along the darling old style "Main Street". Further east, you'll pass the spectacular courthouse and two historical mansions. The hours are limited, but that allows the cook to focus on what he/she does best. If traveling along I-30 prior to 2:00 pm, it's worth the side trip since it is really close to the business loop. read more

Go! What a great spot for a traditional Texas breakfast. It was so good that we went back our second day in town. First time I had the two egg any style option. Lest you worry that you will not get enough to eat, rest easy. In addition to the eggs, I had three slices of delicious bacon, hash browns, and a biscuit for which I chose to pass up the homemade sausage gravy. All were carefully prepared and satisfying. Coffee was good too. On our second trip to this friendly and TX decorated cafe, I tried the French toast and wow, it was the best! The three slices of French bread were covered with a slightly sweet batter and topped with candied pecans. I didn't need syrup. The dish also was served with choice of meat (I again chose bacon).
