In early May of last year, 2022, I contacted Hans Monuments and asked them if they could have a headstone prepared for us by early June. Every place I had called before that told me there was no way that that was possible since there was a backlog of orders and stones were in short supply due to the pandemic. Hans Monuments was the only place that told me yes, guaranteed. They added that there would be a rush fee, since I needed it in a month, but that they could get it done. My family had a very brief window of time where we could all be together, meeting in Wyoming, our ancestral home. I was driving all the way from Seattle and the rest of the family was driving in from Denver, telling Hand Monuments that the location was about 2 1/2 hours away from Salt Lake City, UT and that we would need it delivered in advance of the service, they replied telling me that that would be no problem. I have much gratitude to this company for making such a difficult moment so easy for us under such great stress and pressure and their work, despite having to rush the order, was of good quality, on par with anything I've seen anywhere. I definitely recommend this company. If you're looking for headstones, they are kind, understanding, professional, reliable and fast if you need them to be. Similarly, the staff at Larkin Sunset Gardens were professional and considerate as we planned my mother's funeral. Aaron Miller and Garrett Nelson were helpful while reviewing with us my parents' pre-planned burial arrangements and planning my mother's funeral. I was relieved that we were not hustled into paying more than necessary and that Larkin honored the terms of the arrangements that my parents had previously made and paid for. When it came time to dress my mother, Funeral Director Coltin Morrison was gentle and helpful. He worked with great care to assist us. I appreciated that he took the extra step to steam my mother's clothing before we dressed her. Finally, during my mother's funeral, the Larkin staff who assisted us there were professional and thorough in taking care of all the necessary details. All in all, the experience of saying goodbye to a loved one is very emotional and heart-wrenching. Their care brought immeasurable healing and support during the greatest loss our family has faced. A couple of weeks before my dad's passing, as his condition declined, I researched funeral homes to plan ahead. Many promising places did not answer or could not speak with me for at least a week. Cate answered immediately, guided my questions, and, at a moment when pre‑grief was unraveling my nervous system, my life, and my heart, she made a heartbreaking time clear, straightforward, and gently held. My dad was one of the most incredible human beings on earth. He endured late‑stage brain cancer and fought with honor and dignity for 20 years. In the end, the cancer took the entirety of half his face. His passing, though anticipated, came more suddenly than expected and was profoundly traumatic for our family. One of our final promises to him was to repair his face so he could take his complete and healthy self to heaven. It was ultimately the most important vow of our lives to him. Kurt, Cate, my dad's original prosthetist Paul Tanner from Huntsman Cancer, and Gene, the funeral director and reconstruction lead, performed a miracle. They reconstructed my dad's face for the viewing and made him whole again. The healing this brought to my mom and me is beyond words. We know my dad could see it, and we know he would have been ecstatic. The reconstruction provided so much healing as we prepared him for heaven and restored him to looking like himself again. The peace it gave all of us is immeasurable. Our family is Chinese, with formal traditions at the time of passing: timing before transport, cremation formalities, and practices such as cremating joss papers and specific items with the body. SereniCare honored every detail with patience, grace, and reverence, while still delivering flawless reconstruction. We also asked for his urn to be engraved in Mandarin. Sarah and Cate went above and beyond to ensure his name and the exact font were perfect, allowing us to honor him in his native language.
