    Taiyaki ice cream
    Michealea F.

I went during happy hour, late at night around 11pm. I got the free drink since I got more than $20. The deep fried chicken popcorn is flavorful and it taste similar to the taiwanese fried chicken. At the end I also got the taiyaki ice cream and it isn't that sweet, which is nice. For the hot pot I got the spicy dry pot and it was very saucy. The selections are similar to big way but the deep fried options are worth it. However, big way has better meat balls selection.

I tried the sukiyaki soup base and thought it was just okay. It didn't really taste like sukiyaki to me. I would say the fried foods they have were the most tastiest to me. There's lots of parking here which is great, and lines do get long inside. Service is quick

My favourite hot pot/malatang place! Their soup bases are on the lighter side which I really enjoy. They also have a self serve sauce bar. I especially love the deep fried section, a MUST TRY! Of course, no meal is complete without dessert and they offered coconut flavoured ice cream in a taiyaki fish cone last time I was here. Waits can be long depending on when you visit but if you during happy hour they have great deals!

I looooved this place (even though there are so many of these self serve hot pot places now). Personally, I think this is organized better than some other establishments out there as they had an online waiting list, and a designated seat BEFORE grabbing your hot pot items. It's just a much more comfortable seating and self serve experience. Even grabbing sauces when waiting for your food to come felt at bit more at ease. Piping hot has more options to pick from than other places. I really like that they have a self serve fried food section. It just adds to the amount of customization I can get in my meal. Sometimes, I want more fried food, sometimes less. It's nice getting the option to choose. They also give you a free taiyaki dessert at the end of your meal too. The price is similar to other places although, it's easy to go overboard with how many toppings you can choose from!

A new-ish hotpot place that took on the latest craze in hotpot - choose your ingredients, weigh them and choose a soup base. However, Piping Hot added some ingredients for frying! As this is a craze in winter, expect long lines or go early at 5:00pm. I enjoyed the hot pot and most especially my dessert! Space is clean and modern. Unlike its competitor, this place is more spacious. It gives a more relaxed feel and I'm able to enjoy my hotpot.

We came on a Sunday with a group of 8--my advice, time your visit, otherwise you're on the waiting list, waiting. It gets really really busy. Parking is not an issue if you come early enough. We just made the tail end of the first wave. The first section is the fried section. Make sure to take a separate bowl for this. There are a lot of ingredients to choose from for both hotpot and the fried section. I had the Japanese Miso Broth and it was very mild--so mild that it's borderline flavourless. I thought I lost my taste buds. The fried stuff IS goooood. I mean, depends what you like. I liked the fried stuff over my hotpot. I will definitely try a different broth next time. Their boba and grass jelly drinks are pretty good. The Thai Ice Cream Taiyaki however, was only meh. Looks better than it taste. It's included so it's ok, I guess.

Honestly nothing bad to say about this hotpot place! I come here all the time haha. It's pretty much self service. Just pick the ingredients you want in your hotpot and then a soup base and you're done! I think it's pretty affordable too because I usually just get a bit of meat and a ton of veggies.

Knowing here is always a line up, my friend and I came early around 5pm to give Piping Hot a try and we enjoyed. Compared to Big Way across the street, Piping Hot wins with better soup broth, better selection and presentation of meats and seafood, and great customer service. I liked that Piping Hot seats you first so you can put your bag or coat down and then select your food items. Like the name says, my soup came piping hot. We like the option for fried foods that others don't offer. The desert was a soy ice cream and the flavour wasn't that bad. All in all, I came back again. Free parking in the complex if you come early. By 7pm, the parking lot gets full/busy.

Another hot pot by weight place that opening in Richmond - except this one has deep fried items as well! The place gets super busy during dinner times, but the pro is that you can join the waitlist online (recommend doing it 1-1.5 hours earlier than when you expect to go) to minimize waiting in person. Inside, there are booths and tables, pretty similar to the Ackroyd big way location. Since it's so similar to big way, I find myself comparing them often. Seems like they have more variety in different fish balls, but less options for noodles. Meat quality (based on the last time I went) seemed to be worse than big way. I've tried the sukiyaki broth (a bit too salty), collagen (a bit blander than big way), and three delicacies (good option if you like fishy broth/strong pepper taste). I do like coming here when I'm in the mood to eat deep fried stuff! Their sweet mochi balls are really good. I also really like the chicken knees and squid is decent as well. Their taiyaki dessert is also pretty good as it's freshly made. ALSO: I would pick piping over big way if I'm eating after 10pm because they have free drinks if you spend over $20!! Otherwise I feel like they're pretty similar - whatever has the shorter lineup is probably a good option.

We finally got to try this place after a long wait (we got a table after a few hours in queue). It is similar to Big Way Hot Pot but unfortunately I would say it's not as good. They do have a fried food option, which is really nice and different from the other hot pot places, but I found the broth much less flavourful than other hot pot places. I got the curry one. The place does get lively and busy. Worth a try but be sure to get in queue ahead of time. They also give you ice cream in a taiyaki at the end which was different!

There's an electronic waitlist system for this place. You can either click on the join waitlist button from Google, or else come the restaurant itself and once you enter there's a small electronic tablet set up where you can join the waitlist. The Google page doesn't seem super reliable though. We check it and it said something to the effect of, "There's no wait. Come on in!" Yet when we arrived, there were several people ahead of us. Only sometime after we had joined the list did Google update their page and display the "Join Waitlist" button. This place is somewhat similar to Big Way Hot Pot. It's not the traditional style of hot pot where you cook the food yourself. Here, you select your foods from a huge variet of options, place it in a bowl and they cook it up for you. Just like Big Way, they charge by weight. It's slightly more expensive here than Big Way A lot of other reviews seem to be praising the deep fried foods section. I didn't actually try any of the deep fried foods as it was all meat and seafood, and I decided to go Vegetarian for this meal. My husband tried it though and he said the deep fried foods were "meh." Nice concept, but they need to work on their implementation. Seems the deep fried foods were overcooked. They have a huge variety of options just like Big Way. I only took one of every food that I chose for my bowl and still ended up with a very generously filled bowl. It definitely wasn't lacking for anything from being a Vegetarian meal. They have two Vegetarian broths to choose from. One is mushroom and the other is tomato. I chose the tomato broth and very much enjoyed it. There's a sauce bar where you can customize your own dipping sauce. I chose sesame oil, soy sauce, black vinegar, garlic and green onions for my sauce. Hubby raved about the Vegetable curry sauce. Not sure we'll ever come here again but if we do, I will have to try the Vegetable curry sauce next time. We tried a Peach Soda Pop drink. It was just OK. The drinks taste much better at Big Way. I had read multiple reviews where people wrote about having a taiyaki milk tea ice cream for dessert. We did indeed get taiyaki with ice cream in it. We didn't get a milk tea flavored ice cream though. Our taiyakis were filled with...pretty sure it was strawberry ice cream based on the flavor. It wasn't bad but I would have preferred the milk tea flavored ice cream. I guess they must rotate the ice cream flavors. The flavor you get when you come to visit is just luck of the draw I guess. No guarantees on what flavor you'll get. We enjoyed the meal overall; however, we prefer Big Way Hot Pot. They are slightly cheaper, and make better tasting drinks than this place. Service: Good Parking: Plentiful and free

It's always a good concept like most hotpot places nowadays for full customization - from selection of carbs to protein to the last slurp of soup. Piping hot stands out amongst the crowd as all the above plus the option to choose items to be deep fried - think Taiwanese fried food / street food stalls! The soup bases were a bit blander than I liked, I personally thought the soups lacked a certain umami kick to it. That being said, the fried selection was delicious! I loved the seasoning spice the fried items were tossed in and the variety available to have fried. The cherry on top is definitely the tea flavored ice cream served in a taiyaki cone!

I'll admit it: when I'm looking for Korean food, I don't usually go off the beaten path…read more There's a reason for that. Korean food is one of those cuisines where I've always subscribed to a simple theory: if Koreans aren't eating there, why should I? You can dress up a restaurant, put some Korean words on the menu and serve kimchi with just about anything, but eventually somebody has to judge the food. And Koreans, bless them, are not exactly known for suffering quietly through mediocre kimchi. So imagine my surprise when a little Korean restaurant in the middle of Richmond, BC, actually delivers. Daan is good. Properly good. And no, this isn't the place for the ubiquitous Korean BBQ experience that seems to have taken over the culinary landscape. No sizzling tabletop grills, no elaborate choreography, no fifteen-minute explanation of which piece of meat you're supposed to cook first. Daan is for something much more important: the Korean food you actually want when you're hungry and a little homesick for the food you grew up with. This is comfort food. The stews. The noodles. The hot-plate bulgogi. The stuff that arrives at the table steaming, fragrant and unapologetically familiar. The japchae is a definite yes. The bulgogi is worth ordering. And the galbi hits that sweet spot between substantial and satisfying--the kind of meal that reminds you why Korean food became a comfort food in the first place. There is one notable disappointment: the gamjatang, or pork bone stew. And that's a bit of a shame, because a great gamjatang can be the very definition of Korean soul food. Here, it just doesn't quite get there. So skip it and spend your calories elsewhere. Prices are pretty much what you'd expect in Vancouver--roughly ten percent more than Toronto, give or take. Then again, they don't hit you with PST on restaurant food, so by the time the bill arrives, we're more or less even. What I really like about Daan, though, is that it doesn't seem desperate to be anything other than a Korean restaurant. And in a city where Korean food can sometimes mean driving to Kingsway in Burnaby, heading all the way out to Coquitlam, or joining the latest Korean BBQ craze, there's something wonderfully satisfying about finding a place in Richmond that quietly gets the assignment. You want your kimchi fix? You shouldn't have to cross the Lower Mainland. Daan is proof that sometimes the little restaurant in the middle of nowhere is exactly where you should have been looking. Definitely recommended. Just don't order the gamjatang. Cheers!!!

We came in craving Korean BBQ, and Sura did not disappoint. The food was delicious, and everything we ordered came out fresh and flavorful. The meats were tasty and well seasoned, and I really enjoyed having all the different Korean side dishes to go along with the meal. There was plenty of food on the table, and we definitely left with full stomachs. One thing I really liked was that the food tasted legit. Nothing was overly fancy or trying too hard. Just good, satisfying Korean food that you actually want to keep eating. You know it's a good meal when everyone at the table gets quieter because they're too busy eating! The service was another big plus. Everyone was friendly, attentive, and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. They checked on us at the right times, helped with anything we needed, and never made us feel rushed. Korean BBQ can get pretty busy with all the dishes and things going on at the table, so having good service really makes the whole experience much better. The restaurant itself had a nice atmosphere and was a comfortable place to sit down and enjoy a meal with family or friends. We were able to relax, take our time, and enjoy everything without feeling like we needed to hurry up and leave. Overall, we had a really good experience at Sura Korean BBQ. Delicious food, generous portions, great side dishes, and excellent service. Not much more you can ask for! I'm glad I finally got around to writing this review because they definitely deserved one. This was probably the first time I came to eat during their dinner service, as a friend was dying to go and is a frequent lover of their menu. Overall, I have to say I was pleasantly impressed with their bbq. We ordered the marinated royal beef galbi and the premium royal beef galbi. The meat was tender and delicious. Their pork belly was good, but I really enjoyed the pink pickled radish on the side. Tofu soup was hearty and spicy, but the portion is on the smaller end (serves one small bowl to 5 people). Their rice cakes were delicious - perfectly soft and chewy with various seafood and fish cakes in the spicy sauce. I've personally had better pancakes, but my friend loves their seafood pancake and says it's her favourite. The side dishes really stood out to me. There were the classics (potato, kimchi, bean sprouts), but there were also other delicious dishes that I normally don't have, such as the crab and corn salad and various pickled vegetables. Honestly, they made great palate cleansers and made the meal so much more enjoyable. Service was prompt and smooth. The total was about $50 per person, which is not bad at all considering we were beyond stuffed. I think I would definitely choose other bbq places if I were willing to travel, but Sura is a great, reliable spot in a convenient location.

After waiting an unusually long time, we finally asked about our food and only then discovered that our order had never been entered. As a result, we wasted nearly two hours of our time. What made the experience even more frustrating was that they did not serve banchan or rice while we were waiting. In Korean restaurants, it is common courtesy to provide banchan and rice so customers have something to enjoy before the main dishes arrive. Instead, we sat there with nothing. It honestly felt like they were trying to avoid refilling the unlimited banchan rather than taking care of their customers. The food itself was only average and certainly not worth the excessive wait. As a Korean, I am very familiar with Korean food and the level of hospitality that customers should expect. Good Korean restaurants make guests feel welcome even when the kitchen is busy. Unfortunately, that was not the case here. Mistakes happen, but how a restaurant handles those mistakes says a lot about how much they value their customers.
