They also have a separate area where you can get deep fried items, and they fry it separately for you. Just make sure you put it in a separate pot when you bring it to the counter. I really liked the deep fried squid bites. I usually never see those at other places. For the skewers definitely get the wagyu skewers. They are so tender. I went during happy hour, late at night around 11pm. I got the free drink since I got more than $20. The deep fried chicken popcorn is flavorful and it taste similar to the taiwanese fried chicken. At the end I also got the taiyaki ice cream and it isn't that sweet, which is nice. For the hot pot I got the spicy dry pot and it was very saucy. We came on a Sunday with a group of 8--my advice, time your visit, otherwise you're on the waiting list, waiting. It gets really really busy. Parking is not an issue if you come early enough. We just made the tail end of the first wave. The first section is the fried section. Make sure to take a separate bowl for this. There are a lot of ingredients to choose from for both hotpot and the fried section. I had the Japanese Miso Broth and it was very mild--so mild that it's borderline flavourless. I thought I lost my taste buds. The fried stuff IS goooood. I mean, depends what you like. I liked the fried stuff over my hotpot. I will definitely try a different broth next time. Okay, I am back to fix my review!!! Since then, I have visited Piping Hot more times than I can count. This has become my new alternative when I feel sick of Big Way. They fixed most of their service issues as service is now much more attentive, and they pre-make their taiyaki to avoid wait times. I think this is reasonable considering the high traffic in the restaurant. This place deserves my 5 stars because they have somehow won over my parents??? My Asian parents generally dislike eating out as they find a lot of restaurants expensive and salty. However, my mom has somehow awarded Piping Hot's soup the golden compliment "not too salty" and my dad comes just for the taiyaki ice cream (he doesn't care about the food LOL). They have frequented Piping Hot without me...which I find insane because I usually drag them out to eat with me. Everything has been seamless for me since then, so I have no complaints. Knowing here is always a line up, my friend and I came early around 5pm to give Piping Hot a try and we enjoyed. Compared to Big Way across the street, Piping Hot wins with better soup broth, better selection and presentation of meats and seafood, and great customer service. I liked that Piping Hot seats you first so you can put your bag or coat down and then select your food items. Like the name says, my soup came piping hot. We like the option for fried foods that others don't offer. The desert was a soy ice cream and the flavour wasn't that bad. All in all, I came back again. The place gets super busy during dinner times, but the pro is that you can join the waitlist online (recommend doing it 1-1.5 hours earlier than when you expect to go) to minimize waiting in person. Inside, there are booths and tables, pretty similar to the Ackroyd big way location. Since it's so similar to big way, I find myself comparing them often. Seems like they have more variety in different fish balls, but less options for noodles. Meat quality (based on the last time I went) seemed to be worse than big way. I've tried the sukiyaki broth (a bit too salty), collagen (a bit blander than big way), and three delicacies (good option if you like fishy broth/strong pepper taste). I do like coming here when I'm in the mood to eat deep fried stuff! Their sweet mochi balls are really good. I also really like the chicken knees and squid is decent as well. They do have a fried food option, which is really nice and different from the other hot pot places, but I found the broth much less flavourful than other hot pot places. I got the curry one. You can either click on the join waitlist button from Google, or else come the restaurant itself and once you enter there's a small electronic tablet set up where you can join the waitlist. The Google page doesn't seem super reliable though. We check it and it said something to the effect of, "There's no wait. Come on in!" Yet when we arrived, there were several people ahead of us. Only sometime after we had joined the list did Google update their page and display the "Join Waitlist" button. This place is somewhat similar to Big Way Hot Pot. It's not the traditional style of hot pot where you cook the food yourself. Here, you select your foods from a huge variet of options, place it in a bowl and they cook it up for you. Just like Big Way, they charge by weight. It's slightly more expensive here than Big Way A lot of other reviews seem to be praising the deep fried foods section. I didn't actually try any of the deep fried foods as it was all meat and seafood, and I decided to go Vegetarian for this meal. My husband tried it though and he said the deep fried foods were "meh." Nice concept, but they need to work on their implementation. Seems the deep fried foods were overcooked. They have a huge variety of options just like Big Way. I only took one of every food that I chose for my bowl and still ended up with a very generously filled bowl. It definitely wasn't lacking for anything from being a Vegetarian meal. They have two Vegetarian broths to choose from. One is mushroom and the other is tomato. I chose the tomato broth and very much enjoyed it. There's a sauce bar where you can customize your own dipping sauce. I chose sesame oil, soy sauce, black vinegar, garlic and green onions for my sauce. Hubby raved about the Vegetable curry sauce. This restaurant recently took over the old Dinesty space, and it offers a concept similar to Big Way Hotpot, with the same price per kilogram. One main difference is a deep-fried section, which is good to be shared at the table. They also offer condensed milk at the sauce area so that can be good for dipping the deep fried mantou. While I personally won't be going for the deep-fried options again, I can see others enjoying it. In terms of selection, I think Big Way has a broader range, especially when it comes to noodles, but I found the offerings here to be good enough. What really stood out to me was the broth--it was far more flavorful than Big Way's. The tomato broth, in particular, was less tangy and salty, making it a much more balanced choice. I'll definitely be ordering that next time. Instead of the typical ice cream cone offered at other hotpot restaurants, they serve free taiyaki milk tea ice cream, which is a nice bonus. We went during the grand opening and was lucky to get a seat before the line ups arrived. There's a wide variety to choose from. Many different fishballs, deep fried area, even tofu had lots to choose. There's 13 different soup base as well. I chose the collagen bone broth to compare with Big Way, and I have to say, I liked this one better. The one at Big Way felt like it had a lot of MSG in it. The broth was very rich and delicious, my son loved it so much that he finished all my noodles. They also had pig intestine which Big Way doesn't have. Both hot pot came to $20 each which was reasonable for the price and we were super full afterwards. Also you can add rice for just $1 a bowl which was good. We had to search around for the sauce bar but there's a large variety as well which was good. Their space is clean and service was great despite the overwhelming amount of people. I find the meat quality mediocre and not the best, but the deep fried dishes were all very well made. From proteins and seafood to a wide range of mushrooms, veggies, and noodles, Piping Hot easily offers twice the choices compared to the other hot pot spot in the same mall. A cool bonus: they make their own ice cream cones on-site. Not something you see every day, and it's a fun touch to end the meal on. We waited over 2hrs for a table for 4 on a rainy Saturday evening even after putting our name on the online wait list. If you're willing to wait a long time for a table here, then make sure you have some company or can be preoccupied during the wait. My 3-star rating is really for the fried food section, taiyaki ice cream for dessert, and the speediness of the staff serving you once you've sat down at your table. The food items selection is a good variety, so I was able to get everything I wanted. One tip I got from another Yelp reviewer was to order your taiyaki ice cream even before you finish your hotpot bowl. Their machine only makes a few at a time and it takes time to make them! The ice cream itself is milk tea flavoured and has a nice consistency, not too sweet either! A new self-serve hot pot spot with the same concept as Big Way. The main differences are: 1) they have a deep fried ingredient section where items you pick will be fried Taiwanese street food style 2) slightly different soup base options 3) they serve taiyaki ice cream rather than in a normal cone 4) there is no online line up for the restaurant, you need to write your name down the traditional way. I absolutely loved their 3 delicacy soup base which I found to be richer and less salty/msg than other hot pot places. The pricing is still the same as Big Way at $3.99/100g and their hotpot ingredient selection is also about the same (except for the addition of ingredients for frying). I found that they had a delay in when ingredients were running out and the time when staff would come refill the container. However, I did go on opening day so I understand that they were still working on smoothing things out. I initially didn't know that the fried ingredient section was separate, so I threw some of the skewers/fried chicken into my pot. I was impressed that when I got served the food, the staff saw the items that had to be boiled VS fried and separated them. If I am ever craving a few pieces of fried chicken or 地瓜球, I would definitely come here! Sauce selection was good and standard. They additionally have ketchup, condensed milk, and some seasonings to sprinkle for any fried foods! The taiyaki was really fresh and fluffy and the ice cream was also creamy (I find Big Way ice cream to be a bit icy/not milky enough). Tasted the same as if you went out to a dessert shop to buy one. It is really worth it when it is all incorporated into the hotpot ingredients cost! I did notice that cooking the taiyaki was the main limiting factor for the movement of tables. Most diners finished their meal but were waiting for the ice cream, which meant that they were sitting and waiting at the table before a new group could dine. Their machine cooks only 4 taiyaki at a time. Hopefully they improve their efficiency at this for the future. Otherwise, service was fine. The restaurant feels more private with booth style seating rather than open tables at Big Way. We waited about 20mins for our table of 4. Overall I really liked the new concept of adding in fried food and having taiyaki ice cream. It added a bit of a step up from solely hot pot, and for the same price as Big Way. I can see how there is more labour and cost for the restaurant incorporated into this model because of the need to time the frying ingredients with heating of the soup for each diner. Right to the point, I was looking forward to the ice cream in the fish pastry and they stopped offering that. They now have the ice cream already in the pastry and they deep fry the whole thing and it is teeny tiny miniscule two biter. So disappointing. The hotpot is OK. The staff were all super pleasant, attentive and quick. We grabbed our food, picked our soup bases and waited for our food to arrive. When it arrived, we noticed that they had accidentally mixed up the soup bases. The staff were extremely apologetic and were quick to offer a remedy. I was pleasantly surprised at how eager they were to fix the mistake and how generous they were with the fix as this isn't something you see in most Asian restaurants. The food itself wasn't my favorite. I found the quality of their food to be okay but nothing spectacular. They do have a large variety of foods to pick from, including some items that they re-fry for you. They also have your typical self serve sauce bar.
