We stopped into Pippin's to to kill some time. We split a plate of the nachos which was great and had a couple drinks. We sat by the window and they had the windows open which was perfect. They do have a nice patio area but it was a tad chilly and shaded which will be great in the heat of summer. With it being pretty busy we had great fast service. Other than the bartender it looked like there was only one waitress but she was on top of it. This is a place I would recommend and would come back. read more

#28 Day drunk all along the Magnificent Mile--what else do you do in Chicago to forget how cold it is? PUB CRAWL! We were all doing the Chicago tourist thing and running up and down Rush St. to every bar doing at least one shot and drink, meeting people and simply having a great, cold, Chicago time. We happened along Pippin's and it seemed like a place we wanted to be. Pippin's has a comfortable atmosphere, and the bar also offers a "locals" feel rather than a "touristy" vibe (even though we are tourists we wanted to hang with the cool people of Chicago). A plethora of beers--whether on tap, in a bottle, or in a can (yes, that would be Pabst) and a stellar selection of cocktails. The floor seemed to be barely making it through the day with all the traffic and wear beat into it, but it really added charm. Irish memorabilia covered the walls and surrounded the bar area. There were also about 1,000 pair of "left behind" sunglasses hanging from the chandeliers (or lamps--whatever). That surely reminded me to secure mine in my purse. There was a jukebox full of really great music, and just an all around awesome vibe. The smell was strong, like a basement, but about one drink later we could not even smell it. We arrived after lunch (and a few other bars down the street) in somewhat of a jovial mood, ready to continue our daytime drunk. We walked in about 4:30ish and a lot of people seemed to be arriving from work, school, drinking like us, etc. As we sat and enjoyed our drinks, even more people came in, and the place filled rather quickly. Bartender called out to us, "Hey, what'll yous have?" in a super friendly, Chicago manner. I felt comfortable and happy. A few regulars form the area started talking to me and Lauren and we felt right at home. The music was superb--classic rock. This is something I rarely hear in the Bay Area (or maybe I go to the wrong places), and it was pretty amazing. The crowd was cool, a little more classy than the last spot we went into; however, the crowd was cool and did not seem to mind us, the Cali tourists, on their stomping ground. From Pabst in the can to strong martinis to cool people--Pippin's has it all. My friend, Nick, a beer freak, had the time of his life there. So many beers on tap. I had a martin, one friend a screwdriver and another friend was drinking Greyhounds in the afternoon--weird, but whatever. The place filled up really quickly as we arrived, seemingly at the right time to grab a seat. We were even offered some delicious Chicago dogs from next door--they deliver right to your barstool. Pippin is a dive bar where no dive bar should be. And I guess that's what makes it work for me. Because who would think a block or so from the fancy shops on Michigan Ave would be a dive bar? I've been wanting to stop in this place ever since I caught sight of it driving by one day. Just the name Pippin evokes the title of a 1970's musical that I love, so I was sure I was going to like this place. And like it I did. It is dark and worn in inside although my friend pointed out to me that they had lightened it up a bit with new paint on one wall etc. There is a smell to the place (what dive bar doesn't have one?) that I just can't describe, and the bar stools with their leatherette tops wobble slightly as you sit down. There are bar games scattered around the place including Golden Tee and the music, while good, blares in some instances so loudly that you cannot continue with your conversation. But the best news about this place? Beer specials on a Saturday night. What bar does that? And on this night, it was Coors Light for $3. There is no food on the premises, but they own Downtown Dog next door so they will order for you and then the funny thing happens. Because of the close proximity- they don't package the food to go . . no rather they just carry a basket of prepared food from one door to another. Funny to see a guy walk in the front door bearing a red plastic basket with food in it! It's not fancy. It's just friendly bartenders serving your favorite beverage quickly and with a friendly quip. And just like the opening song from the musical Pippin says, "Join us . . .come and waste an hour or two!", you'll find that is easy to do at Pippin's Tavern. read more

Still here after all these years...which is not s surprise. This has nothing to do with Scotty Pippin. I will tell you a story which will then tell you all you need to know about Pippins. He still works there. I was there for game 6 against philly when they won the first stanley cup back in 2010. Coincidentally me and my friend Ray were here for game 7 against detroit this past playoffs when the blackhawks won in overtime after the ref cowardly ruled off the goal by hjalmerson to end the third period. I take these three experiences to mean that watching a blackhawks game here will only bring good luck. The staff is always welcoming and you get to order food from next door. read more

Super chill Irish pub located downtown near Loyola. Came here after the mad freakout from how expensive drinks were at the Signature Lounge. Luckily, this place is nearby and is a fraction of the price! Pippin's has a relaxing environment that's conducive to good conversations and a couple rounds of beer. They have a good selection on draft so you'll likely find something to enjoy. There's not much of a decor- but after a couple of drinks, you won't even notice. Out of all the bars in the area, this is one I'll probably frequent more often. read more

Stopped by on a Friday night and sat at the bar. Made it just in time for happy hour, so I ordered their oysters. There were average, at best. However, I ordered the pork porterhouse as my entree. My husband and I stopped into Pippins on our way to Millenial Park to make reservations for that evening. The host was friendly and accommodating. We arrived back on time and were seated promptly by a super charming young woman. The wait time was usual but I felt it passed more quickly in a comfortable relaxed place. We hit the right time of year for ramps, which were prepared beautifully. Delicious! Then we both greatly enjoyed the porterhouse pork with sweet potatoes. It was the kind of porkchop that if no one was looking you would pick it up and clean off every last perfect bit. (Yep, we did.) I go there to watch the Cup, the bar is half-empty and everyone in there is watching soccer - including a family from Belgium. Paying customers right?They are literally playing commercials on full blast. I ask the bartender if she can change the audio channel to match the soccer game and she says, "we're not putting the sound on." I point out that everyone in the bar, in the middle of the afternoon, is watching soccer. And she's like we're not putting the sound on. I explained my frustration to the doorman and the young woman working and they reasoned it was because the Cubs are playing later. Later. By all means change to the home team when they start playing, but also let the current audience enjoy the Cup in the present moment. American ignorance at its finest. One of very few local bars with decent beer specials. It's a sausage tavern ladies, men of all ages and likes. Come one, come all. I'd bumped into two tattooed men from Italy and a few pubescent fresh to 21 years, that were clearly too damn drunk to be drinking more beer. A very drunk man--apparently a regular--bumped into several customers, cursed them out, stumbled to his seat--and when we all called him out, the bartender turned on us. Said we were the problem. I would give this place zero stars if I could. I've been here for the first and the last time in my life... Worst bar in Chicago!!!! For starters the bouncer is barely above age and apparently has to check with the drunk bar staff on duty regarding the validity of IDs presented at the door. Tourists beware!!! The particular evening that I was there they decided that my driver's license issued by the state of South Carolina was fake and proceeded to rip the lamination to shreds. I had just flown into Chicago earlier that day using that ID and needed it to get home. When contacting management about the incident, they insisted the ID was returned in the condition it was presented, and offered a gift card back to this terrible establishment. I am from SC! I recently took a cross-country road trip with my son as we moved him into LA. This is a review of one of our many stops across the good ol' USA As we usually do we ask the door man, valet, front desk staff about local places to go In this case we had just arrived in Chicago after a few hour drive and we wanted a beer and a local brew at that! Pippins was loud, friendly and standing room only. We really liked the vibe and the waitress was a willing to pose with two local beers for our travel blog. What's not to love about an obviously local bar that's been around for years. The bar takes up nearly 80% of the entire space alloted but there are a few tables outside if the weather is nice. Strong drinks and quick service can be found here. I had a jack and coke and it was really strong, just the way I like it. The crowd here is as ecclectic as the bar itself. Old and young both so don't worry about that. I don't know much about this place but I'd say it's a staple bar of the area so come visit if you have the chance. read more

Pippin's sure was poppin' on a Tuesday night around 5pm. Almost everyone seemed to just be grabbing some drinks with co-workers. The atmosphere was dimly lit and festive as it was decorated for the holidays. Irish decorations and holiday decorations adorned all the walls and surrounded the bar. The space inside isn't very big so if you don't like crowded bars, I'd avoid the place. Not a whole lot of seating, but we didn't have any trouble finding two stools at the bar. They have a decent selection of draft beers in addition to a full bar. Drinks were fairly cheap as well. I was a bit surprised to be carded at the door since it was so early in the evening, but whatever works best for them! read more
