Z Bar is the lounge at the Peninsula. There's a terrace if the weather is nice or huge windows if it's not. Getting there was a bit complicated - you take elevators up/down depending on where you come in. I chose to sit at the bar, but there are nice loungy spots too. Expect well curated and well crafted cocktails, along with a nice menu of snacks. I Enjoyed some very nice champagne (Perrier Jouet) and mini samosas. The samosas were really nice and an absolutely huge portion. Yeah, it's expensive but it's the Peninsula and you're worth it. read more

Had an option to sit inside, but we saw a nice semi shaded spot outside so we hd no choice but to take advantage of the situation. We had Sarah as a server and she was very helpful with letting us know what all the goodies were on the menu. The Freezer Door Martinis were very much in order due to the very hot temps outside...really good and did the trick. Got them with some blue cheese olives. We were hungry so we definitely needed to get some food in us. We opted for the Tuna Tartare, Z Bar sliders and the potato bites topped caviar. Tuna Tartare was the best of the 3 and I would definitely get that again as it was very flavorful and delicious! Sliders were very good as well as they come in a set a 3. Potato bites with caviar were good also. Recommend all 3! Came back a 2nd time and had Amber as a server and she was awesome as well! Took good care of me. I'm not sure why it's taking me this long to do a review of Z Bar as I have been here a long time ago. I used to come here in my late 20s and have drinks in the city and party. Now 20 years later this is the layover spot before an event at the hotel. We ended up coming up to the Z bar because the lobby would not see us simply for drinks and they stated they were closed. Around 3:30 PM on a Saturday. Anyhow, Z bar is impeccable as usual. I will say I would love to see a renovation, especially with some of the colors and fabrics. Unfortunately, also at this time the rooftop outdoor area isn't quite open yet, and someone was trying to set up all of the cushions. Service and menu as always are amazing. And people who usually come here, even though some are a mix of tourists and locals everyone is very well behaved and there's no craziness here which I thoroughly appreciate. read more

Stopped by Z Bar on a Saturday afternoon. It is located inside the Peninsula Hotel. Upon entering, the elevators are on the left and you take it up to the 'lobby'. Once you get to the lobby, you're welcomed into a beautiful hallway and you'll find another set of elevators to take (located down the hall, off to the right) to get to Z Bar. There was about an hour's wait for a table for 5, but we found our way to the bar and enjoyed our drinks on the outdoor patio area. The weather was chilly but manageable and there were heat lamps/electric firepits on the patio. I imagine it to be beautiful during warmer days! Most cocktails range anywhere from $22-$24 and they are STRONG. There are also so many more drinks available on the menu. Their mojito is the first one I've ever had that was that strong! If you're looking for a light alcoholic drink, I would pass on this, but if you've been wishing your mojito was stronger, this spot does it right!!! The espresso martini was also delightful. The Z was such an interesting drink, it was almost like a green juice and I enjoyed it. It was super busy, but we were able to flag down a bartender and service was fair. For a place that feels very (very!) high end, you would expect service to come with an attitude. But the service here was wonderful. Attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable. We had an assortment of very nice cocktails that were about as pricey as you'd expect for a place like this. On a late Saturday night, music was a little loud and the lights were a little dim. Swung by Z bar pretty late on a weekday night. It took us ages to find the entrance to Z bar as you have to take two different elevators to reach the entrance. The hostess was immediately able to seat us. We got a nice big booth for just the three of us. We tried the Bangkok Jam and The Last word cocktails. Both were really good but a tad bit strong for me. The service was pretty fast. We didn't order any food as it was pretty late but the cocktails came with a bowl of nuts for the table. They were soooooo good. Loved the sweet and salty nuts combo. We chose to have the Mediterranean flatbread, which was very good. It was loaded with arugula, and had a delicious red sauce with cheese. I ordered a bourbon cocktail called the Surprise Surprise cocktail. It had a beautiful two tone look and was beautifully garnished. It also wasn't too sweet. A group of coworkers and I stopped by Z Bar for a drink before dinner while in Chicago. I was happy to see that they had spirit free drinks available, even if $16 for a non-alcoholic drink seemed a little steep to me. I got the SB spritz: Seelip Grove, NA Sauvignon Blanc, soda, citrus, strawberry and it was refreshing and tasty. The atmosphere of the bar is swanky and upscale, with cocktails ranging from $16 up to $1,000. The best part of the bar was the complimentary nuts they give you! I wasn't expecting that, so it was a nice surprise and helped hold me over til dinner. The outdoor balcony looked like it had some amazing views. Unfortunately we were on a bit of a time crunch, so we weren't able to appreciate the view. I went for their old fashioned, which was beautifully rendered. Their cocktail menu is a delightful mix of the classics and more inventive creations. They have several high end Manhattans on the menu at varying price points--from $100 for one made with the Balvenie 21 all the way up to one for $1000 made with the Balvenie 40 yr. Z Bar was definitely an experience for sure! This was the last restaurant I visited in my short weekend rendezvous in Chicago, with my best friend. We decided to have dinner here to close out our wonderful weekend. I should note, like a handful of other rooftop establishments in Chicago, there is a table cover / reservation fee. The cover was $50.00 per person. This, cover does go towards the overall table bill. With that said, let's dive into a quick recap of the overall restaurant. As noted, we went for dinner. We got there early, so we were able to be seated early - which was a great plus! There was hardly any wait time. Z Bar is located in The Peninsula hotel - which is a stunning hotel. The rooftop lounge / bar, is quite modern in decor. There was ample space and seating so you didn't feel cramped or crowded. And the views of the city below were quite magnificent. Staff, was good. I will say, our waitress could have been a bit more attentive but alas, it started as a slower night and then it picked up maybe an hour and a half into our dinner / time there. So, she did get a bit busy with other tables with larger parties. Nonetheless, she was very nice. As far as food and drinks go, pretty good. I enjoyed my flatbread. The menu, sadly, is a bit small so I would recommend you view the menu prior to going to ensure there is something on it you'd want to indulge in. Portion sizing, seems a bit on the smaller side, so IF you are very hungry, prepare to order a few dishes to fill you. The drink menu is GREAT though. Honestly, the drinks were more so the highlight than the food itself. My best friend had the sliders - which she liked okay but wasn't anything to truly brag about. The assorted nuts they share at the table were quite tasty. Definitely held us over as we awaited our main entrees. We did not have dessert. However, I did end up getting an additional glass of rosé wine - which was really good. Overall, the food experience was good but there is room for improvement. The drink experience was great and all drinks were poured with love - so that was a nice treat. I feel the ambience was very nice. It definitely lends itself to a lovely date night as the overall mood lighting was intimate and warm. For a first time experience, I'm pretty happy with it. Next time I'm in the great city of Chicago, I'll be sure to pay them visit for a happy hour because the drinks are well worth it. read more
