The Green Door Tavern is right up the block from Mr. Beef, so if you're going there for a sandwich, this is a good spot for a drink after. That's exactly what we did this past Saturday. The Green Door is the oldest bar in Chicago. It was built one year after the Chicago fire and was one of the last structures built with wood. This was a very cool place to spend a Saturday afternoon. College football on TV and excellent food and drinks. My wife and I split the calamari appetizer which was very good. My Old Fashioned's were well made. Bartender and server were both very friendly. One other cool thing is that there's a speakeasy downstairs. I went down and found the bookcase which is the door, but it didn't open until the evening. Great spot in Chicago with an incredible history. Went here as part of a tour so I was glad this place was one of our stops. Built 1 year after the Chicago fire it is one of the last buildings(or is the last building) made of wood before they passed the law that structures couldn't be made of wood. Didn't try their food on a menu, it was food made for a party which those are always quantity over quality. However, the drink list is great! read more

Our poor server was the only waitress on staff today, but she was very kind, and despite being overworked, she still checked on us regularly. My burger was on the medium well side of the spectrum, but I wasn't going to raise a fuss, considering that it was still edible. Food is above average bar food - ceasar salad was delicious and a great big portion. Buffalo wings were okay and nothing special. Fries are the delicious crinkle cut kind. Get it with the cheese sauce! My fiancé loved his patty melt, but we both thought the Brussels side was way too syrupy. Stopped to get my car washed at River North Car Wash around the corner on Superior, and remembered one of my old favorite lunch spots. I was hungry so I walked over to the Green Door Tavern and grabbed what I remembered enjoying the most there--fried calamari and a patty melt. After a trip to the Sloomoo Institute, we were starving and stopped by this place. They had a kids menu that my kids enjoyed. I had the corn beef sandwich and it was delicious! Our server was kind and attentive. The different signs on the wall and ceiling were vintage awesomeness. The legend burger was really good. My wife and I love going to the Green Door! A short walk from our Chicago place, we've driven past this place for YEARS and finally gave it a try the week we signed our new lease. This place is self-proclaimed to be "the longest operating bar in the city of Chicago"! and an actual speakeasy from the prohibition - And I believe it. The building looks to "lean" as that's how they built structures when the building was constructed in the late 1800s/early 1900s. The building is filled with Chicago memorabilia, neon signs, decorations and lights. It's a history museum for the city of Chicago. So cool! They have Touchtunes so you can play your own music, and a back room that looks like it is straight out of the 70s with a Playboy Pinball machine that takes quarters. The food is incredible. My favorites here are the GDT Burger, the Chili and their fries. I've never ordered anything that I didn't like. They also have a variety of taps, cans, bottles, and a shot wheel if you want to take a risk on a bartender chosen shot. Service is always pretty good. It's fantastic when Caitlyn is around to wait on tables, but they tend to be short staffed on the slower nights - I get it. You can always walk up to the bar for immediate service if you've waited for a few minutes. They also have a "speakeasy" in the basement that looks pretty cool. But I've been turned away every time saying there was a huge line or I needed a reservation (I've literally tried 10-15 times). Kind of weird. It'd be fun to check it out sometime. Still, this has become one of my favorite places in Chicago. Come check it out if you have some free time and find yourself in River North! read more

Love green door tavern. It's a very old school dive bar with great cocktails and reasonably priced snacks. Most people swing by green door to wait out the long lines at Drifter, but on its own, green door tavern is a great place to casually hangout with friends. Their house cocktails are reasonably priced. After 10, they switch to a cheaper menu with $5-$10 snacks. The service is fast! The servers are nice except for this one server who is very mean. On asking politely for a dirty martini, she appeared snappy. I mean, what? The place screams of old 1900s Chicago with vintage decor, old school billboards and clocks. The fact that drifter is just downstairs is the icing on the cake. A must visit! read more

Came here wanting to go to The Drifter, but I came on a Monday and its only open Wed-Sat. Walked all this way from the hotel so I went ahead and ordered the Deviled Eggs and some water because they only have beer and a few seltzer/ciders. The Deviled Eggs were......eh. You could make them just as good at home. Probably better, but they were deviled eggs. This is supposed to be the oldest bar in Chicago and the inside is kitschy and what you would expect, so I would give it 5 stars for ambiance. Good music, perfect volume for a bar. Service was nice. Lady saw I was disappointed that The Drifter wasnt open, not her fault, and quickly took my order and the eggs came ut pretty quick. Checked on me and when I asked for the bill, she was very quick to bring it. 5 of 5 for service. If you want beer, they have it. My love and I recently went to Green Door Tavern after checking out a few art gallery openings in the area. It's been a long time since I have been to the Green Door, but it was a worthwhile visit (apparently GDT was established in 1872 and again in 1921). It's fun to look at the random vintage stuff all over the walls. Temperance Beer brews a Green Door Lager, which was a satisfying drink. The GDT Chicago Poutine was delicious and filling, with Italian beef gravy, cheese curds and a cup of giardiniera on the side. My love and I also split The Feature, a burger with pepper jack cheese, onions, guacamole, and tortilla strips on brioche bun. I don't know if we were just filled up by the terrific poutine, but The Feature burger was just AOK to us. Our server was also AOK. The Drifter is apparently a funky speakeasy on the lower level, but we did not have time to visit on this evening. read more

It was earlier in the afternoon so it wasn't jam packed. This place can get pretty busy though. Has lots of local beers. It's about $7 a pint. Good choices. Temperance Brewery makes the Green Door Lager. It's a light but tasty beer. The food actually sounds good, and there's a few choices for vegetarians. Each of us got the GDT Beyond Burger. It's about $13, which is the only bad thing about it. This came with mushrooms and sautéed onions. Other food items are typical bar items, not as healthy of course. They also have chicken sandwiches and fries. Be sure to check out downstairs. It has a little speakeasy with more cool drinks and food. It's a bar!!!!! We stopped in during our trip to Chicago to try some bars and restaurants we had seen on YouTube. When we stepped inside, we were happy to see the collection of oddities--a sign of a fun, established bar. It wasn't very busy. A few little clusters of patrons were spotted out of the corner of my eye. We sat down at the bar and a gentleman greeted us. He was definitely of Irish decent. He looked like he came straight off a Lucky Charms box! He took our beer order and promptly presented our drinks. We like to have a little bite with our cocktails so we chose the giardiniera deviled eggs--sounded interesting enough. They were delivered shortly thereafter. Although pretty on the plate, the taste didn't wow us. One thing we noticed about bars in Chicago, bartenders don't really engage with patrons unless you're a regular, unlike other establishments we've been to. So don't expect it. Very causal Sunday afternoon, decided to go to Green Door for couple beers with a party of 4. Apparently, the blonde bartender will verbally cuss you out for tipping less than 20% on pouring ~10 beers in ~3 hours. Also, make sure you buss your own table or they'll make you. Not to mention she didn't actually yell or confront the person who actually paid. She instead intelligently decided to expel her rage at the rest of the party while he was in the bathroom. Powerful! Intelligent! We were happy to tip more on our next tab to make up for this heinous crime against humanity, but she decided to not serve us after that. For those that continue to go to Green Door, remember that 20% tips are mandatory regardless of service quality or she will come for you!
