We went here based on a recommendation from the hotel we stayed at. It's a good buffet, which runs about $16 per adult. We had a local coupon which is buy one buffet and get the second half off Featured foods are a well stocked salad bar, plus lots of hot foods like fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, a few different vegetables too. Also includes several types of thin crust pizza, which is pretty good. Reminds me of the buffet that Pizza Huts had years ago. One word of caution regarding the hot food- the tongs were very hot to the touch. Almost too hot to touch. It's a steam table with heat lamps overhead. The fried chicken was very good! Since I was disappointed with my pizza from Alley's, I ordered a pizza for delivery from Pizza Ranch. I had a medium, thin crust sausage and pepperoni with black olives. I asked for it well-done because I like the cheese browned, not just melted. Later I noticed a review complaining about underdone pizza here and was glad I ordered it this way. It was done properly, and the crust was nice and crisp. This was decent pizza, better than Alley's and perhaps not as good as Casey's. The sauce is too sweet for my taste. I lowered my overall rating to three stars for Pizza Ranch. I think they have four star fried chicken, but after all, it is "Pizza" Ranch and not "Chicken" Ranch. I will certainly make Pizza Ranch my go-to for fried chicken when I am in Story City but have settled on Casey's for pizza. read more

It's a pizza buffet plus which works well for my family. We have some avid pizza lovers and some who don't care for it. Having options works well and the buffet is clean, stocked, and service was great. Bonus for the warm cookies and ice cream! Do yourself a favor and try the garlic cheese pizza with their dipping sauce. read more

We got to Pizza Ranch in Story City, IA at 5:50 and there was only 4 pieces of chicken and it had been there awhile. Mashed potatoes you had to scratch the edge of pan to get any. 3 pizzas and 2 had 2 pieces each. 3rd pizza was about half. They never brought out chicken till 6:15 and pizzas till 6:25. Not very good service at supper time. BUT when we got the food it was good. But not everyone was happy with the wait on a buffet. read more

recently transplanted from east of the mississippi and literally stunned to hear the best place for chicken was a place called pizza ranch. well 'duh!' i thought, and for good pizza you'd naturally go to taco'reilly's... stupid stupid stupid ex-city slicker, the fried chicken is that good, with barbeque sauce it's or sesame seeds and a light oriental-ish glaze (think jethro bodine meets mr miagi) it's gooder! ...and they have pizza too! buffet etiquet is about what you'd expect from a place with ranch in it's name but that's more on the clientelle than the proprietor and staff. read more

I went here for a family reunion when I was out visiting and this place is a great place for large gatherings. There are several rooms that they can open up to your insanely big family and it's a great place to bring kids, too. Think pizza buffet with salad bar. They also have a "dessert" pizza that is rather like a breaded crumble. There is some really whacky cool sculpture on the walls too, that my Uncle Dave found really wild. read more

Much improved over the previous incarnation at this location. They've done a nice job of renovating this place. It's cleaner and the problems with keeping their better pizzas stocked has been eliminated for the most part. They've opened two buffet areas, one in the front and one in the back of the facility. Both are stocked with salad, pizzas, chicken and beverages. I am sure that there were some opening kinks, we had problems with cold chicken and pizza that had been sitting out for a long time but these are minor issues that should be easily remedied when they hit their stride. One thing that I liked was that they ask what time of pizza you are looking for when you pay at the front desk, they give you a number and then make sure you are the first patron to get a piece of the pie when it arrives. Pizza Ranches seem to have a far less elegant flow of traffic than other buffets I have tried. It's chaos around the buffet table, and many people seem to completely disregard those who get between them and their food. A great improvement, a welcome return to Story City. read more

This may be the best (or second best) Pizza Ranch I have ever been to! I walk in (pulled off of I-35) and the cashier asked if I was from the south due to my accent. Turns out she was from Fort Worth and had missed people who sounded a bit more like her. Great start! As tradition holds, they offer to make a pizza for you and bring you as much as you want with the remainder going to the bar. If they offer this, I always consider it a superior Pizza Ranch. They nicely asked and I nicely requested a beef and blue, great pizza and Story City Pizza Ranch is off to a perfect start. Buffet was nice and well stocked. I wished they had the buffalo (or whatever they call the spicy) saucy chicken on the buffet, but they had the other flavors. Fresh fried chicken kept coming out along with the occasional pizza. As the crowd wasn't spectacular, I felt they did a great job of keeping options open! Overall, if you like pizza ranch and friendly service, stop in Story City! Also, the towns name makes me smile! This is probably the nicest Pizza Ranch and/or bufftet that I've ever been to. First of all it's in a nice little town right off the highway so it's a great place to stop after a long (or short) ride. When I first walked in I reconized how large it is! I'm only giving four stars because the food other than the pizza was not very good and you could tell was sitting there for a while because it was cold. But the pizza was really good. Their pizzas just keep getting better. The staff is friendly and the manager even called my phone to let me know I had forgotten a coupon on the counter after I left with my pizzas. I usually call ahead for take-out pizza, but I have eaten in the restaurant a few times. While the atmosphere and food are fine, the traffic flow at the entrance can get to be annoying. read more
