If you miss the authentic no-frills vibe of Gramps in Wynwood, then you likely also miss the best part of their bohemian courtyard, Pizza Tropical. I was bummed for a few weeks after I learned about their January shutdown. That was until I found out recently that this pizza haven has opened their own stand-alone establishment on Biscayne and 70th just next to Dogma. Lucky for me, today was Pizza Tropical (or PT) day. The first thing that struck me was their outdoor seating area which was suspiciously familiar... in fact, if they didn't snag the furnishings right out of Gramps' courtyard, then they came from a close cousin. The inside was more polished up, but still showcased a couple of the colorful shabby tables. We made friendly with the cashier/pizza prepper who dressed the part with an oversized Blondie T. We confessed that we had been raptured by their unique pizza recipe for some time and how jazzed we were that they had found a permanent home of their own beyond Gandaddy's (and I use the term endearingly) back yard. She had a confession of her own - they tinkered with the goods. But she spilled the beans with a confident grin, so Joe and I never panicked, but our concern was likely perceived. The pepperoni slices came to our table within 3 or 4 minutes. Ahhh yes, just the way I remembered - curled up pepperoni loosely lounging in a shallow sea of cheese and tangy sauce. The crust edge just a wee singed to perfection. But the fresh basil leaf that once adorned the wedge like a shiny green Christmas ribbon was now chopped into slices that covered a greater area of real estate. We helped ourselves to the oregano and crushed pepper before our Blondiephile offered up some parm which she scooped from a plastic container. Upon closer inspection, I noticed this was not their former finely grated Parmesan I had been a fan of. Nope, these resembled hunky shards or even crack rocks of the Parmesanian variety. I spread them strategically over my slice so as not to get too high on parm. Then the bite. Wham-o! Instantly, I knew Esteeve's was going to have a couple of extra seats at their disposal for the foreseeable future. Whatever PT did to their recipe, and perhaps it was those shards of parm rocks, but it was like eating pizza out of a crack pipe. The combo of super zesty curled up pep and the healthy bath of tomato tang was like a surge of electricity - flashback to 7-year old me giving a lick to the top of a 9-volt Rayovac battery. Every bite consistent from front to back. The crust - perfection. Light as a feather but crackling like a Fourth of July sparkler. The crust edge alone deserves an Oscar for best supporting role in a kick-ass slice with its complex portrayal of nooks and crannies in toasty pockets filled with baked aroma. I can't say anymore than what've tried my best to convey here except for this - there are lots of trendy slices in Miami that get a lot of print and make a lot of noise. But you may want to get a hearing aid and tune in to the quieter frequency that dominates Miami's pizza space. A nod to Gramps for first turning me on to Pizza Tropical. read more

Let me start by saying I never had Pizza Tropical while they were at Gramps so this review is solely based on visiting their location on 70th and Biscayne. Decided to stop by as the reviews were great and the place had a fun tropical vibe to it with outside seating and vibrant yellow tables and chairs. We were unsure about parking but they told us that while the adjacent car wash was closed we could park anywhere there. So that's cool and there was plenty of parking. Otherwise it would be paid street parking. We came at around 6:45pm on a Friday and we were one of the first ones there. Staff were friendly and patient as I checked out their menu and specials. I went with a special they had for a large pizza plus garlic rolls and 4 Sodas for $35. It seemed like a good deal. I asked them to make it half pepperoni and half cheese. I also added Pineapple as an additional topping. The garlic rolls came out first and they were nice and garlicky. The fresh marinara sauce was the star though. You could taste the freshness. Garlic rolls themselves could have been a little more cooked but that was just a personal preference. The pizza came out and it was a good size pizza. 8 large slices worth and visually it looked amazing. The use the small pepperoni which normally means flavor explosion. Unfortunately here is where the review turns. Although visually appealing, the pizza itself was very floppy. My wife grabbed a slice for my kid and half the toppings fell off because of the flop. One by one each slice flopped and basically ended up having to eat it as it slid off my plate for support. The pizza lacked flavor which I was so surprised based on the great reviews and overall appearance. I was really hoping for a better experience but maybe it was just me. Believe it or not I never had the pizza while this place was in gramps. So I had no expectations. The pizza is so delicious!!! I love their take on Hawaiian pizza. I know that's controversial but I think even someone who isn't a fan would like theirs. I'm a pepperoni girl all day every day. It'd be nice if the had a hot honey to go with but that's just me. Their Blanco pizza is my favorite! It's a small space inside with some out seating available. I think the quality of the pizza and the price are compatible. Quite possibly the pizza in Miami - they have a Hawaiian pizza with two types of pineapple! My absolute favorite. Great value, a single slice ca be enough for one person. And don't sleep on their wings, especially the honey garlic which is the perfect blend of sweet and savory. So happy to hear that although their home base Gramps will be permanently shuttered, Pizza Tropical will live on in a new location soon! read more

This is a local spot inside an otherwise bustling touristic area. It's large with plenty of seating. The pizza was decent, I'm from Connecticut so I'm not easily impressed by pizza. but the garlic knots!!! Sooo good. My husband is usually the garlic knot lover. I take it or leave it, but these were sooo moist & full of garlic flavor. The bread was not dried out but it had a bounce to it. It has a nice crunch on the outside and fluffy on the inside. I discovered this place thanks to Cycle Party Miami and I decided to buy a slice of pizza because each slice costed less than $5 (with the exception of El Vegano). [Parking]: It will not be easy to find street parking spots in this busy part of the neighborhood called Wynwood, but if you do end up finding a spot then you'll have to pay via PayByPhone app. Otherwise nearby overpriced parking garages are always available. Ok so I went to this spot cause I'm from New York and a lot of comparisons to nyc pizza are being tossed around here. We don't really have a Hawaiian situation in nyc But the plain cheese was it. What a great place! you can listen to live music, grab some drinks, and order a pizza all at the same time! We decided to grab some pizza from here one evening and we are so glad we did! Luckily there wasn't a line and we were able to place our order very quickly. We decided to get a half pepperoni and half mushroom pizza. Then we went over to the bar and grab some drinks. While we were waiting a rock band started to play so we were entertained while we waited. The live music was really good! Before we knew it we got a text saying that our pizza was ready. It was excellent! I always forget how great it is to have pizza at a restaurant instead of getting it delivered at home. The crust was the perfect amount of chewiness and crispiness that I want in a pizza. The toppings were plentiful and they put huge leaves of basil on top. Pizza Tropical is a little hard to find; there is only a small sign at the entrance to the courtyard. They offer a limited variety of pizzas and snacks such as chicken wings. We got a slice of cheese and pepperoni pizza and some garlic knot. I'm not joking when I say that was some of the best pizza I've had in the US - the most perfect New York slice. I find myself craving this pizza even when I'm sober and not downing a million Tecate & Tequilas. You could never go wrong with a classic slice of pepperoni, it kind of reminds me of the pizza in NY. Perfect for folding, perfect amount of grease, but the crust is sturdy and chewy enough to sop it all up. The sauce of the tomato is super flavorful and balances great with the hearty pepperoni. Another favorite of mine is the Abuelita slice, which is like a Detroit style pizza, thicker crust, the bread has a buttery flavor to it. Sometimes I get this if I'm really in the mood to get carby with it. The prices are unbeatable for the quality of pizza they serve here. The pizza was pretty good and the decorations were fun! Although it is completely outdoors, the seating area is covered by shade and there are large fans blowing. My biggest complaint is the wait. We ordered our pizza a little after noon (an hour after Pizza Tropical opens), and we were the only customers. We were told that our pizza would take 10 minutes which is understandable because they had to make a fresh pie for us since no one was there. Unfortunately, it took more like 20 minutes to get our 3 slices of pizza. Also, we asked for water when we ordered our pizza. We were told that they normally have water, but it wasn't set up yet. I'm not sure why it wasn't set up "yet," when the restaurant had opened over an hour ago at this point. The pizza here is some of the best pizza I've had in Miami. It's New York style. Thinner crust and lots of grease! It's a nice chill spot inside you can grab a beer from gramps. They give you a pager so you know when your pizza is ready. There is outdoor seating and indoor seating (inside gramps) they have music playing and a bar outside (was not open when we went at 3pm).
