While hanging out at Gramps on Saturday evening decided to grab a slice of pizza from Pizza Tropical. I just ordered one slice of the La Blanca pizza. Quality Now putting a pizza place inside of a bar is just about the smartest thing you can do. There is nothing that goes well with a cold beer quite like a slice of pizza. And while Pizza Tropical may not compete with the best pizza joints across South Florida, it still serves up a very solid slice. I ordered the La Blanca pizza, which is covered in caramelized onions, dollops of tres quesos, and parsley, then has toasted sesame seeds thrown on the crust. It is definitely a fun pizza and when you get a bite with both the caramelized onions and tres quesos it is close to greatness. It is a very crispy slice with good texture, until you get to the very end. The crust itself was just not good. First, I do not like the addition of sesame seeds, they just are not needed at all on the pizza. Second, while I enjoy the crunch under the slice, there should be some softness inside the ends. It was more like eating a large pretzel stick, which is not what I expected or wanted. Quantity The slice is a little larger than the size of a paper plate. This is not a massive slice like your beer filled stomach may want, but it still get the job done. Value When you have a pizza place inside of a bar the market has already been cornered. Therefore, the $3.75 price tag for a plain slice and the $4.50 for my signature slice are not too surprising. High, yes, but it is the convenience that you are paying for. Ambiance Pizza Tropical is little more than a window stand within Gramps bar in Wynwood. Under the awning in the outdoor area you will find a small red and yellow shack. You order at the window and they give you a buzzer to let you know when your slice is ready. The menu is small, but it is all you need when you are enjoying a drink. It is also super convenient when hanging out at Gramps for a show or musical act and you don't want to leave yet are still hungry. Crowd When Gramps is busy so is Tropical Pizza. I can't really imagine people seeking out the pizza when they aren't also visiting the bar, but maybe locals do to take advantage of the lunch specials. Service I put in my order and the cashier immediately headed to the back to help with the preparation. It took about five minutes to be warmed up and ready to go. Not too shabby, though I would expect much greater delay late night. Parking The area directly around Gramps and therefore Pizza Tropical is always busy, so street parking can be a hassle. I recommend parking a block or so away, either south or east, to avoid the traffic and pedestrians. Extra Tropical Pizza may not knock your socks off when sober, but it is exactly what you dream of a few beers in. The La Blanca pizza is a good choice except for the crust, which I just don't understand. On a return visit I would definitely give a different flavor a try. read more

TASTY PIZZA ALERT! I was on a budget and looking to take my ladyfriend out to somewhere nice. I would definitely consider myself a 'conisewer', someone who enjoys the finer and more exquisite things in life. And one thing other than chicken nuggets and mozzarella stix that I'm pretty much the authority on is, you guessed it, pizza. I used to work at the original New York Pizza® in Key Biscayne HELLOOO, so I know what goes into making the perfect slice. Pizza Tropical® is located in the bustling arts and food truck district known as Winwood, like Steve. It's right behind this mom n' pop bar there called Grampas. I think it's the same owners as Pollo Tropical®. Visited here on a Friday night with my ladyfriend and another lady colleague of ours. Our colleague drove, so I was looking forward to getting tanked and pigging out on pizza. This was not my first time indulging in Pizza Tropical, but something felt extra special about tonight. Grampas next door had hired some big shot DJ from Belgium that my ladyfriend likes, so this date was already turning out to be a sure shot. We ordered our slices as soon as we arrived. Plain cheese for the lady and pepperoni for myself. The girl at the window spoke pretty good English and was friendly. You can even buy beers there so u don't have to make the five foot shlep over to the bar at Grampas. And it works out nice cuz u can hear the DJ music while eating at Pizza Tropical. The slices came out nice and hot. They even put some greens on top, us foodies like to call that a garnishment. I think what I like most about the pizza here is the sauce. It tastes like they put all kinds of herbs in it and reminds me of the pizza from the original New York Pizza® in Key Biscayne. YUM! I heard sometimes the special ingredient is actually the water which comes from New York, which is the best in the world. Yeah, I used to be a New Yawker so I know. Foggettaboutittttt! The event at Grampas with the British DJ was F-R-E-E which is already music to my ears. So we moseyed on over there after stuffing the pizza down our throats. My ladyfriend really likes the Moscow moles they make here, those unfortunately are not FREE. But we know this guy that works at Grampas and he gave us 2 moles for FREE. I think his name is Mickey. That's what us industry people like to call "VIP treatment." My favorite part about eating at Pizza Tropical though is coming back at the end of the night after I'm good and wasted and slurping down another slice. Yes folks, they stay open laaaaaate. So after the DJ from Belgium finished up, we headed back to PT for one last slice. This time it was the Grandma slice, which was delish! What a coincidence that a place with a slice called the Grandma would be right next to a place called Grampas. Quite unusual! PROS: The pizza is delish and the price is nice. Why the ricotta cheese, why try and re-invent the wheel. Would of given this pizza place a 3.5 if it wasn't for the ricotta cheese that they throw on. There are many vegan cheeses and I was disappointed that such a modern place had absolutely nothing for me. It looks amazing but if you have any dietary restrictions, there aren't any options for you really. I was so disappointed and left so hungry. read more

Honestly the best pizza in MIAMI. I was born and raised in New York and I am very picky about pizza. The crust is crunchy and the pizza don't flop! They have an option to put garlic powder, chili flakes, and pecorino cheese on it's I always get a cheese slice cause it's so good I don't need anything else, but if I'm feeling like adding something fun I get the mushroom cause it's delicious. The chicken wings are also great. I like to get the two sauces mixed (hot and honey garlic)! Amazing. I highly suggest this place to anyone and everyone if you want REAL Ny style pizza. I liked Gramps before Pizza Tropical opened but Pizza Tropical puts it way over the top. As an ex-nyc'er I can confidently declare the pizza to be destination worthy. The crust, cheese, and toppings are all excellent. The pizza is clearly the very deliberate result of a careful pursuit of gastronomic perfection. Was pleasantly surprises by this place when I ordered. Not the NY slice I'm used to but they did a good job at coming close. I also ordered garlic knots which weren't so great. They were very dry and didn't come with marinara sauce. Definitely would order from here again! Solid pizza! read more

Is it Pizza Thursday at McMillan Middle School? Wow, it sure feels like it. This taste like it was made in a microwave. The Ingredients were cheap. They tasted like they were frozen for weeks. Really just not very good pizza, for $3.75 a slice. I pay $3 a slice for a slice twice as big and with fresher and better ingredients elsewhere.
