All meats we're beautifully charred, tender with a smoky flavour. I loved the Boerewors sausage, steak, and chicken. My husband loved the lamb! We ordered the garden salad, potato salad , and pap with tomato chutney. All sides were delicious. Give pap with tomatoes chutney a try. It's yummy! Stop what you're doing and read this. This has now become my ULTIMATE FAVOURITE PLACE to eat in Toronto. If not, just hands down one of my favourite places to eat EVER. Ok so I have been to South Africa. I know the food like the back of my hand and consider myself a little bit of a braai conisseur - at least in terms of eating it. So when I came across PlanB , I was skeptical of this so called south African offering. The interior is super cosy, with a few tables decorated in traditional south African garb and definitely immerses you in it but having south African staff with the *swoon* accent and all made this experience a whole lot better. That's when I knew, it's getting real. I thanked the stars for wearing a loose-ish shirt because I was ready to EAT. I needed to try a bit of everything so we got a braai platter, a chicken burger and to keep things mildly healthy, a Greek salad. Let me tell you, food is done the proper south African way with MASSIVE portions and a whole lotta MEAT. Now the food, what can I even say. Tender , succulent lamb chops, juicy sausage and moist (yes I'm using that word) chicken breast made every bone fully cleaned to the core. This is a hidden gem in central Etobicoke. Blink and you will miss it when you drive by this non-descript plaza on Bloor at Prince Edward. Small South African restaurant. Food (4.5/5) - tried a few items specifically the burgers and wings. Next time will try some of the platters and sides. - Monster Jo Burg'er was very good. Steak and beef and it was very moist and tasty. Love the egg and onions on top and the PB sauce goes well with it. Good bun... not too limp or hard. - Jo Burg'er Special was good as well but I prefer the steak over the beef strips personally. Chips inside the burger adds a nice touch. - Peri Peri wings - had a nice taste to them. Wings were cooked well. Maybe a bit on the small side. I prefer bigger ones. Service (5/5) - very quick and responsive. It was not full that night so not sure if that made a difference but received orders pretty quickly. Friendly server and explained everything for us. Atmosphere (4/5) - it's a small casual restaurant so nothing special, however clean overall and some parking out front. Overall (4.5/5) - will definitely repeat. Came here due to review and because I never try South African food. So four of us came by at 5. Place is quite small (good size, but I thought it'd be bigger than that). So it was good thing we came around that time (because the place is full shortly after).If you have big group, make reservation to be safe. There's paid parking nearby (the parking in front of the restaurant belongs to different store). Food was so good that we ordered 2nd round. 1st round: 1.braai platter for 1: boerewors, lamb chop, and chicken breast with dinner bread roll, and side dish of tap (some sort of mashed polenta) and tomato chutney. portion is enough for 1 person (not oversize like in typical restaurant). i eat it with one other person so we have space in tummy for 2nd round. all the meat is tender, and has a nice smokey-with-subtle-sweet flavor (the braai sauce). the meat is also good match with tomato chutney (the tomato chutney is refreshing! light taste and not too sweet/too soury..really yummy to pair it with plain dinner bread roll and the plain mashed polenta as well). 2.plan B gourmet burger. our dinner-mate love this (and i hardly hear her say that food is good whenever we went out. she doesnt react much when it comes to food). 2nd round: 1.fords burger: it has a nice spicy kick (because of the peri peri sauce).it has smoke beef strips (thin strip like bacon or sort of like tender beef jerky. flavor is so good, never have sth like that before). light and fluffy bun. 2.boerewor platter: love the dish #1 on round 1, so this time we order boerowers only. 3. wings in bbq smokey braai sauce. honestly, nth special. same sauce as the braai platter, but it's stronger/overpowering (which end up taste somewhat like regular bbq sauce from bottle). i like the braai sauce on the platter more. we all were very satisfied with the food. i'm looking forward to go back for different dish and dessert!(never try south african dessert!) read more

I have visited Plan B a few times and I have always loved my experience each time. Though I don't typically eat meat, or if I do, it's very rare, when I visit Plan B, I break the rules. If you are in the west end of Toronto and looking to explore African food then you need to head over to Plan B. This family run restaurant offers delicious food from South Africa and is known for making hand made burgers, braai (grilled BBQ) and boerewors (sausage).  I tried the Mixed Braai (grilled) Platter for 1 (Boerewors, Lambchop or Steak, Chicken Breast, Bean Salad, and Pap & Tomato Chutney which was $26.00 (w/two sides) It is an easy going and humble place and you get a taste of South African culture right away as soon as you step in with the ambience and music. Everything is grilled to perfection and I enjoyed the flavours in the bean salad. I highly recommend a platter to try for the first time for variation. My friend and I went at 8 pm on a Friday and It was very busy! I highly recommend making reservations in advance which we didn't know we could. The server Mo helping us was very nice and jotted our number down and said he would give us a call if any tables opened up. We went for some drinks and got the call about half an hour later. I am very glad we decided to wait. It was the best burgers I have ever had! The server suggested we get two different burgers to share. So we got the original joburg'er and the chicken burger. Both burgers were grilled to perfection. Meat was tasty, perfectly seasoned and juicy. unique flavours that complimented each other very well. The fries were perfectly deep fried and crispy. I can't say I was super familiar with South African food, so when the opportunity arose to check out a well-regarded purveyor of that country's fare, I was pretty excited. We showed up just after 11:00 on a recent weekday, and the place was predictably empty. We decided to share one of their Braai (grill) platters: Mixed Braai Platter for 1 ("Boerewors, Lamb Chops, and Chicken"), and we got that with Potato Salad and Pap and Tomato Chutney. The food was ready about 15 minutes later and it's good, mostly. The three meats were definitely the highlight, and my personal favorite was the boerewors (which is sausage). It had a smoky, distinctive flavor, and certainly didn't taste like any other sausage I've eaten recently. The chicken was tender and benefited from the grill's char, while the lamb chop was a little tough and ultimately the weak point among the proteins. The side dishes aren't much to get excited about, unfortunately. The potato salad tasted as though it emerged directly from a package, while the pap and tomato chutney was decent, admittedly, if a little on the bland side. I should also mention that this platter costs $20, despite the fact that it doesn't really come with a lot of food. We figured, given that price point, that we'd be able to share one platter, but that didn't turn out to be entirely true. Still, I'd go back if only to eat more of that boerewors. read more

Okay you guys do NOT sleep on South African food, I mean it !!! Plan B is turning up the heat with their authentic South African eats. If you're like me a, newbie to South African food you're probably wondering what is boerewors and braii ?! Boerewors are a type of local farmer's South African sausage made up of meat and lots of spices to give it that flavour! And then braii is grilled meats which loosely translates as bbq. We got the Mixed Braai Platter for 2 with 2 large sides. It comes with Boerewors, Lamb Chops or Steak and Chicken Breast. We couldn't pick between the lamb or steak so we got one of each. Sides we got: - The pap and tomato chutney is the kind of porridge dish on the top right corner and was surprisingly my favourite! The texture was a bit more on the stiff side which I liked and the chutney was so tangy and complimented it so well - The chakalaka is on the top left and is sort of a vegetable relish that I also put basically on all of the meat and yes I did indeed RELISH it lol The meats were even more delicious than they look, the flavour was intense and trust me when I say I am salivating as I think about it again lol Overall this was literally a feast and beyond filling! You can definitely split this between more than 2 people or 2 people for a meal and then have leftovers for sure. This will definitely not be my last time eating their food, next time I will definitely give their handmade burgers a try! So this place was suggested to us by a South African fiend of mine who recommended the place - as there are not many places in the city that serves South African cuisine .. I've had the Ethiopian Dorowat before - but this cuisine is quite different. We had ordered the Braai - which is like a mixed meat platter of South African BBQ meat - including chicken, lamb chops, and beef / lamb sausage (Boerewors). It had this really charred and smoked flavour which we really like - my son especially liked the coiled sausages (Boerewors). We ordered a meat platter for 3 along with two accompanying sides (Pap - which is like a polenta and tomato chutney, as well as chips - which is fries). I had ordered the food for take out, although next time we might sit and eat it at the location. I heard they play live South African music at night. For the quantity of food (see pic) it came to about $50 - which I thought was a bit pricy .. it was meant for 3 people. That would've been my only complaint, otherwise I would've given this place 5 stars - we really enjoyed the exotic flavours of the meat. read more

After a review on BlogTO I wanted to try South African food at this small burger joint. Although the place sells burgers, they also sell South African barbeque. The traditional sausage is called a Boerewors. Orders are taken at the cashier. I ordered the Miss B' Boerewors. You get two sausages in the bun and its covered in Apricot Chutney, tons of caramelized onions, raw onions, shredded cheese and lettuce. The sausage was delivered on a wooden plank, so the presentation was nice. The first thing I noticed was the texture of the sausage. It was soft (no snap), but it was good, more tender almost steak like. The sausage was great! The onions and Apricot Chutney all worked together. It was salty and sweet absolutely delicious. I can't wait to return and get the meat platter. I think the sausage would be great as a stand-alone and I want to try their lamb. The only knock on my meal was the cost. The sausage was 13 bucks by itself. It would be better if it came with fries or if they lowered the cost to the 8-10 range. For 13 dollars I could get a Sub which is more filling as the sausage alone left me still hungry. All in all, it's a great place and I do recommend everyone try it. We've had a four year old craving for South African food and our appetites were finally whetted - not fully satisfied but it's been a great start !! We heard of Plan B via an article on BlogTO and have been wanting to visit ever since - however staying in the suburbs and having to drive ~50 kms one way does tend to make one reschedule plans. Things fell into place today and we decided to make sure we blocked our calendar for lunch. I always dread parking at Bloor but here it was a breeze - perhaps the fact that we reached there at 3 pm had something to do with it and we secured parking right opposite the restaurant. The restaurant itself is cozy - there are 2 tables which can squeeze in 4 diners each and a larger table with space for 8 guests plus some bar-stool seating for 6. But make no mistake - this is a place with a BIG heart. The owner Haroun is an absolute delight and we had a fun time catching up on old memories of Jozi - from breakfast at Spur, to eating at Fordsburg, to seafood platters at Ocean Basket, massive sandwiches at Akhalwaya's, chicken liver at Nando's, Portuguese food at Calisto's and Adega's, bunny chow and rotis at Govender's in Durban, etc. As a person who has been wandering in a parched desert greedily gulps down buckets of water when he finally reaches an oasis, we ordered the Platter for 6 with 3 sides. The platter had boerewors, sausages, chicken, steak and lamb chops. The sides we chose were a garden salad, pap with tomato chutney and chips/onion rings. The boerewors were hands down winners - beautifully spiced, tender, moist and very nicely braii'ed. Next would be the sausages which were again slightly charred on the outside but still juicy and flavorful. The lamb chops were a smash hit as well with their sticky sweet basting sauce reminding us of the BBQ sauce at Steers. I felt the chicken was a bit overdone and had dried out - however, the kids absolutely loved it. The steak was good too but felt a tad dry. The chips were superb and I wish we had told Haroun to make them "slap chips" - which are essentially wider/bigger french fries that have been given a generous dousing of vineger and salt and wrapped in a newspaper or some such and left for a bit. I love my chips slapper than most. The onion rings were great as well being crisply fried but without being oily. The pap and chutney combo used to be my daily lunch - Pap N' Vleis which was usually a wors or a chicken 1/4 leg. The tomato chutney that accompanied the pap was truly extra-ordinary and once again brought alive taste buds that had been lying dormant for more than 4 years. All in all, this is a truly remarkable establishment with a passionate owner who I'm sure is going to take this restaurant to great heights. I had been waiting to eat here since this restaurant opened a few years ago. We were finally in the area and decided to place an order for pickup. The staff were very friendly, and ensured that safety measures were in place by wearing masks and gloves. The food itself did not disappoint! The boerewors (all beef) sandwiches were so tasty, and the pap with tomato and onion chutney tasted like comfort food. If I lived closer to this place, I would probably be visiting every week or two! I have two suggestions though for improvement: 1 - it would be great if a little eating area could be set up in the parking lot of the restaurant for those of us who don't live close by. 2 - this is totally just based on preference, but I would have preferred a bun that wasn't so soft. The boerewors, onions and sauce were so tasty, but the bun felt a little bit junky and soggy. All in all, a great experience. We will be back when we are in the area again! read more

I was doing an errand in the area so I thought I'd drop by this new place BlogTO was advertising. They do South African Boerewors and inspired burgers. Toronto has a lot of cuisine from all over, but if you want a 'Boerie Roll' you have to make it yourself. Being an ex-pat of South Africa I had to check it out for myself. BTW some slang translating for you Boerewors means Farmers sausage, and roll like a dinner roll or hotdog bun by another name. The boerewors is made fresh in house too, not bought from Florences Market for all you SA ex-pats. The interesting thing is boerewors is not just another sausage, and i've had all kinds from pork to polish to oktoberfest (locally not in Germany) to the humble vienna. Boerewors is painstaking spiced just right, I just eat it I don't make it...but googling the spices to give you an example of what it includes is such: toasted coriander seed, black pepper, nutmeg, cloves,allspice. And to make it in house with the right amounts of spices and come out tasting the way you expect it. Almost slim to none. So down to the meat and potatoes as they say. I was greeted by the lovely wife of the owner and she walked me through the menu. Nice cozy place with SA music blending into the background. I ordered the classic "Boerie roll" with chips (aka fries) and a bubblegum Jones soda. I also asked the owners wife if they had Ms Balls Chutney, which is usually a staple for a Boerie Roll. All you need is a hotdog like bun, boerewors and Ms balls chutney....simple but devine. Unfortunately she didnt have any...but they have their homemade chutney on it and surprisingly its on par with ms Balls. I bit into the roll and I was blown away, it was basically perfect. The boerewors was cooked to perfection, i'm not exaggerating here. Somehow this mans homemade boerewors had the right ratio of fat to meat to spices to make it a delight to eat. Again I apologize but a little history, every South African has had dry wors. Reason being there can be so much fat content in boerewors you have to cook it out a little dry to be able to enjoy it. And thats where ms balls chutney came in to rehydrate it a little bit I guess. But what we have here is what I like to call a hybrid wors, all the satisfaction and none of the drawbacks. The taste and texture are there, not an oily affair like classic wors and not dry at all...moisture intact. Maybe not as potent in the spices, cause remember its waaaayy less oily....and oily'ness does have a tendency to make the spices more flavorful. Still I think if he sells this wors on the side to 'braai' (bbq) at home, he'd give Florence meats a run for their money. The toppings complement the boerewors, and their homemade chutney is sublime...nothing needs to be added. Surprisingly the boerie roll itself reminds me of home too, where it soaks up the juices but still holds well on the outside of the bun. Smallest details like the chips/fries being lightly fried and salted just like back home in SA is a very nice touch. I find most places in Toronto burn their fries to death or overly oily. So the quick take is eating a 'boerie roll' is like biting into a steak dinner and not being overly full after, no food coma. I was speaking with the owner Haroon (Pardon me if i'm butchering your name, I just spelt it phonetically) and how I was really impressed. How I enjoyed his extreme attention to detail, cause I was just coming by not expecting him to succeed in such a enormous undertaking. And I will definitely be back for that Joburger, looks awesome too but now I know when I need a boerie roll where to get one. Food is all Halal, for all of you out there it doesnt mean you need to be all religious or anything. In fact halal means they take great care in the animals state of mind when being put down. As well all the blood is drained which is very hygienic so no bacteria can be spread via the blood unlike some butchers places. DIRECTIONS BY SUBWAY When you get off at Royal York Subway Station, go to what I would call the back exit...it will say "Grenview Blvd", if it says "Royal York" before exiting the station go back the other way. Once out by the Grenview Blvd opening, take a right and you should see an LCBO...across the street from that is Plan B. read more

It doesn't look pretty, but f*** me sideways, it was good. The fries were just meh, but the boerie roll! The tomato chutney Is fantastic.
