I used to go to the West Ashley Planet Fitness regularly (4-5 times a week). I've since gotten a Black Card membership, so I frequent other locations. This Planet Fitness is always slammed, and even with COVID-19 changing people's workout habits, it's still crowded, a bit loud, and tough to socially distance. The website displays a crowd meter and crowd history, so you can see the days of the week and times of the day when the gym is less crowded. Masks are required when you're not actively working out, and most gymgoers comply, at least when entering or exiting. Cleaning stations are everywhere, and most people clean, but I still wipe the machines down in case the last person forgot. The staff members are nice, and most equipment works. The stair climbers often break, which seems to be the case in every gym, and a few of the treadmills are older and probably need some TLC. I have no issues with Planet Fitness or the staff- just that this one isn't my first choice due to how busy it is. read more

One of my concerns with joining Planet Fitness was that I was always used to carrying my bag with me as I work out. They do not allow this. I decided to join in any event as I figured I would just use their lockers. Last night I went to the Gym to work out and locked my things as usual. When I returned I noticed that there was a piece of metal sticking out from my lock. I assumed it was part of the galvanized surface flaking off and didn't worry as it was still attached. When I got home, however, I found that all of the cash had been taken from my wallet. I know this as I just put money in before going to the Gym and it was missing when I returned. I called the facility and was told that a manager would call me back. I ended up calling back in the morning and spoke with the manager. She was very rude and kept interrupting me in the middle of speaking to say that no one else has been robbed and I would be the only one if I was. I explained that others may not know as the lock was replaced. She didn't listen to what I was saying at all. While I was explaining that the lock was clearly shimmed open and replaced she simply put me on hold mid sentence. Before I even finished speaking, she started explaining that, while she could review her video footage, there was nothing she could do as she couldn't see into the locker room and that if she did see something suspicious, she wouldn't show it to the police in any event. She clearly discounted my report and will obviously do nothing to try to look into the concern or try to address the problem. When asked if I could just keep my small bag with me in the future, as I feel the locker rooms are not safe, she simply said that was not allowed. This manager clearly does not care that her establishment is allowing theft and has no desire to try to come up with a solution for it as a result. Customer safety is clearly not concern here. ***Update*** After writing my review above, the "Customer Service" team posted a response that they were deeply concerned about my post and asked that I email them so they could look into things further. After doing so, I received a stock email telling me that they strive for good customer service and that they are not responsible for lost or stolen items in the locker rooms. There was no discussion about what they might be able to do in the future, no discussion about how they may be able to better protect members, and truly no discussion at all about any of my concerns. When I replied asking for contact information for the regional management I was told that I would have to go through the store manager for that even though I had an issue with the store manager in the first place. I firmly believe that Customer Service reached out saying they were deeply concerned only to make it look like they were taking this problem seriously but that they have no intent to actually do so. In the mean time, I have been back to the location several times and continue to find what appear to be pieces of metal shims on the floor in the locker room. I will never again use the locker rooms in this location due to security concerns and encourage others to avoid them as well. read more

This Planet Fitness located in the Citadel Mall was nice. The only thing that could use attention was the air seemed stuffy (even with the fans on). The front staff seemed friendly. The smith machines were older models but they work better (skinnier bar) for me than the newer ones do (thicker bar). Nice facility! read more

This place just wants to get you wrapped up into a contract. That's all they care about. I went in and wanted to pay by cash or credit card for my membership and they refused. They said the only way I would be allowed to use their gym was if I gave them my bank account info so they could automatically draft my account. They actually let me walk out when I was trying to sign up for the premium account. On top of that, there was a credit card machine on the counter right in front of me. I have to say I was excited to try this place. I have gone to another gym for the last 3 yrs. I was very disappointed. Oh well, I'm sure some other gym would love to have my $$. read more

I get you guys have things to clean but it's really distracting trying to work out when people are crowding around you spraying strong chemicals on the treadmills and moving things around. A team member interrupted me abruptly today while I was in the zone with my headphones in on treadmill trying to talk to me just to tell me I don't need to move (I panicked and ended my workout by accident because I thought her said that I needed to move.) Back for the first time after 4+ years. The place still looks great and they have made a lot of improvements. They have awesome staff here as well, very helpful and polite. I even ran into some old acquaintances. Seems like the regulars have stuck around so that's always a good indicator! Five stars all the way. read more

Planet Fitness (aka planet purple) is now basically an anchor store in the sad Citadel Mall. This is a bright spot in this old mall, with a clean, bright location. This was our gym when we lived right down the road in West Ashley, and I miss it terribly. I really feel like the value is fantastic, with two different price options for your membership. We splurged on the black card membership, which gives you access to the hydrobed, massage chairs, and various discounts. You might laugh at the extra $10 a month for those amenities, but winding down in a massage chair at the end of your workout is clutch. It was incredibly worth it! They have a ton of cardio equipment (arc trainers, ellipticals, treadmills); guaranteeing that you can always snag something! The weight machines are a bit more limited, but there's always something else to do if you have to wait for what you want. I never found the crowding to be an issue. They offer a bunch of classes- I did take one express circuit class (30 minutes), which was very energizing. The classes are kind of random, but there is a schedule online which is easy to follow. All in all, I feel like Planet Fitness is a really great deal- and you're not locked into long term memberships if you need to cancel for a month. It's been a while since I've been to a gym, but I was ready to start getting back into the swing of things. This gym is much bigger than what I'm used to so it comes off a little overwhelming, I do wish they would do a little more extensive tour. ( I ended up wondering into the tanning rooms clueless that I had to go up front) I found myself trying to figure a lot of things out, however the staff was very friendly when I asked any questions and I love how clean everything is. It's definitely nice to be able to go in the morning before work and take a shower afterwards. I wasn't sure about showering in a community shower however I was pleasantly surprised at how extremely clean and it actually didn't feel unfortunate at all. Got the black card which is no commitment I don't think I'll keep my membership forever because it's just very overpopulated and busy and I feel like I'm always waiting for equipment. Gym memberships are stupid. What is the silly hang up with advertising the monthly membership fee openly? Having moved around and been a member at my fair share of gyms across the country, I've found the gyms here in Charleston to be over priced and poorly managed. Not a big fan. Then, one day I found Planet Fitness and the angels rejoiced. This is the best deal on gym membership in the area. There are no fancy classes, but they do have free group personal training everyday and their locker rooms are snazzy with tons 'o space, lockers, and showers. Tons of cardio equipment and a decent free weight section. Staff are helpful and not annoying like they are at most other gyms... It's your basic gym without all the stupid extra frills. If you live in the area, just do it. You probably spent more on lunch today than you will on a monthly membership. Just saying... read more

I was apprehensive about joining PF, since they don't always get good press. But my lovely Yelpers had positive reviews, so we ventured in one day to check it out. Glad we did! The gym is pretty big, with plenty of cardio machines, weight resistance machines, and some free weights. For those who upgrade their memberships, PF also offers tanning beds, massage, and a red light therapy. The locker rooms are spacious and clean. The staff is polite, but not overly friendly. Did I mention the giant ceiling fans that keep you cool while you're working out?! They go unnoticed, but they're actually pretty awesome. read more

On a recent trip to Charleston for a Family Reunion, the hotel give passes for the guest to use this nearby Planet Fitness. Once you enter the front desk workers were very nice and accommodating. The gym was clean and had the equipment we all wanted to use. It was group of 10 of us that went together. We had enough room for us to do a group activity and have a good time as a family. Hello All, First off I NEVER do reviews but this one had to be done! Soooo, I recently joined PF May 2021 and was visiting SC for the very first time. I went to use the PF located inside of Citadel Mall on apx 5/31/21. The staff was friendly at checkin and I felt comfortable. I had a great workout until I hit the female showers. As I was showering, ROACHESSSSSSSES began to crawl ALL around inside. I immediately jumped out and grabbed my bags that I placed on the hook located outside of the actual shower. I'm got dressed wet in panic, I shook out my things the best I could afraid these roaches would've crawled inside. Then I went back to the shower to examine a bit and noticed there were dead roaches killed in the shower from a previous guest!!!! I CANT make this up!!! When I told the front desk and called later to inform the manager, they both indicated they are AWARE of the problem and will call the exterminator. They verified seeing the dead roaches smashed against the shower wall and seeing them. They blamed the ocean for being close due to the water. That is BSSS! If that is the case, all of Charleston would be infested! The owner in my opinion is being selfish by allowing the gym to remain open knowing it is infested with roaches. That is a horrible bug to bring home as they multiply like wildfires at a rapid rate!!! Although I shook out all of my things, I am still praying I did not bring not one with me. I am still under complete stressssssss like u wouldn't believe in fear of one of these bugs possibly getting into my gym bag. It is not fair to the members who pay to worry about having bugs come home with them. I'm filing a huge complaint with the BBB regarding this issue. This is so unfair and I suggest to BOYCOTT this gym until it is handled or never enter a locker room or sit Ur things down. I never n my lifeeeee had something like this happen!!!! Well I must say I have been a little disappointed in the new hires lately. As far as the gym, it's great but signing up for the massage bed in advance has been a challenge. The previous managers always had their staff look at the schedule and not schedule someone If there was going to be a conflict as a run over in time. Well this is the 2nd time in a month this has happened to us and to be quite honest I'm a little sick of it! I think staff needs to be trained properly as I had to wait a full 10 minutes! My scheduled time was 11:12 and I got on the bed at 11:22! So done with this!! Please train staff!! read more

Overall pretty unimpressed. Had to switch gyms because I moved...now I'm paying more monthly for a crappier gym. I don't use the machines much, but everything else seems to be broken or shoddy. I have to bring my own stretch bands because the ones they have there are awful (if you can even find one). Do not believe any of the hype that they are different than any other gym. They lock into auto-renewing contracts that indicate they end on a particular date but they claim it is actually a month later. And then there is only ONE day a year that you are allowed to cancel the contract, and you have to go into the gym to do it. I have a sinking suspicion when I try to cancel on that day they will tell me I'm too late and have to wait another year. Planet Fitness employs way more intimidating business practices than other gyms. And it isn't even inexpensive when you factor in the multiple extra fees they charge, I wish I had trusted my instincts that they are no different (worse even) than all the other shady gyms. read more
