Big planet fitness with a good amount of machines. I went at 4pm on a Saturday, and it was relatively busy, especially the treadmills. It's very possible that this is classic January busy-ness, but if you want a less packed gym, I'd recommend checking the app to see the crowd level. About 90% of the gym goers at the time were men so the women's locker room was very empty and all showers were available (4 showers which is more than some other locations). Overall the locker room was clean and the facility was nice, although the locker area was quite dark. The bathroom had some wet paper towels scattered around which was odd since there was no dispenser for them, but was otherwise relatively clean. read more

I'm actually super impressed with this PF. Maybe not the staff, but certainly the layout of the equipment and the space available. We visited on a Thursday evening at 6pm and the place was busy but not too packed yet. This was our first time at this location and we wanted to change our home gym but the lady at the desk was confused and gave us some bizarre information on how to go about that. We just checked in and carried on. The cardio equipment is set up in 2 rows spanning the length of the gym and there appears to be enough for everyone regardless of how busy they are. There is an area with free weights and actual squat racks with space to lay a mat out and workout. There is another area for abs and more free weights in that section. The equipment is laid out in a way that makes ideal sense based on muscle group (I've seen other PFs where machines are just haphazardly placed around) so this was a delight to see. At about 630pm the place was so busy most of the equipment was in use and there wasn't a single spot on the floor to stretch so I hopped back on the cardio equipment. After our workouts we hit up the Black Card Spa zone - I am so glad they have 3 cryo massage chairs. Those are great post-workout! All in all a great gym and I'm really glad its so close to our house. read more

After a day of exploring Cape Ann (Gloucester and Salem), it was time to hit up PF for a quick workout and a shower. This one is open 24 hours, even on weekends, and that's pretty awesome as many are not open in the evenings on weekends. It is a larger location than others I have been to. Today, it was pretty quiet at 5pm with no waits on any of the machines. The locker room was tidy with no trash on the floor. Honestly I've been to a lot of gyms so I get how it goes, nothings going to be perfect for 10 bucks a month. But I would definitely say my biggest discrepancy with this gym would be the people that work out here. It actually amazes me how some of these people act, i don't know if it's a low self esteem issue or just raised in a barn type situation but imagine asking how many sets someone has left and someone responds back "i don't know I lost count" or "I'll be done when I'm done" I've been to plenty of "lunk" head gyms and none of those people ever are disrespectful. If anything they are nicest people. So if you're reading this beware of that, and it's usually the females who like to act macho. read more

The woman who answered the phone is so rude! I've been a member for a year and never had an issue there at all. Until a tried to call there. I'm disgusted, as a professional and business owner of I overheard her speaking the way she did she would've been terminated. The whole reason I love planet fitness is because it's a positive environment and I feel great there. That's obviously a marketing tactic bc their employee is the absolute opposite. I think her name was Lindsey or something like that. I'm not even going to call and cancel, I am just removing them from my credit card and paying the extra at YMCA. I wanted to join the gym on Traders Way in Salem and was told that I could only join online... I wanted to ask some questions and was told I could get the information online..... poor customer service.... I tried to join online and was having difficulty arranging payment for the membership. I entered my credit card information but membership would not go through. I called the gym and was told that I would have to enter both my credit card information plus my bank information.... I was not comfortable giving my banking information, basically doubling my chances of being hacked. Needless to say I did not join. read more

I've been to Planet Fitness for years in NH (Seabrook, Stratham and Portsmouth locations) and even some others around the country and all are exceptionally clean. Then you go to the Salem MA location and it's a horrendous nightmare. Old equipment, dirty bathrooms with toilet paper all over, dirty machines (Stratham crew was dusting every machine every night when I was there at prime time (7pm). Salem machines have dust that has been there for ages and paper towel/cleaning solution stations are hardly ever maintained. Don't really want to go back. read more

***This review is ONLY regarding a non gym member who lurks around planet fitness in: **SALEM, MASSACHUSETTS** A total CREEP lurkes and stalks females in this parking lot between 12-4am. As bizarre as it sounds he's the self proclaimed owner & oporater of a street sweeper truck. He's got reddish hair, white male, looks to be in his 40-50's. Sidenote: I'm a former (female) union construction worker- meaning I've got thick skin and I'm used to working construction sites surrounded by hundreds of (gentle)men. In 8 years of construction I've never EVER had to endure the presence of a creep of this magnitude.  I've visited this location about 6 times, always between the hours of midnight- 4am... YOU KNOW- WHEN IT'S DARK AND ONLY 1 OR  2 OTHER CARS ARE PARKED OUTSIDE THE GYM... Your a female obviously alone and this wanker somehow emerges from the shadowy darkness every time. He'll circle the only 3 cars in the entire plaza parking lot, his orange lights flashing, obviously leering into your car windows as he painfully creeps, lurks and circles you like pray. For real. My first time there, he got out of his truck at 3am,  knocked on my car window as I was reclined back in my driver seat trying to avoid eye contact with this douche and pretending to do whatever on my phone. Think he'd take a hint? Nope. Even though I politely and repeatedly ignored him as he dangerously circled my car way too freakin close like a bat outta hell whipping around his Tonka truck like were in the fn twlight zone... So THIS GUY gets out of his truck, KNOCKED on my car window and asked me if i was ok. Fn Jerk Off even had the balls to park and follow me inside in gym at 3am, hovering over the sign in clip board at the front desk,  questioning staff how the like working there, lingering around the front desk, untill i had no other choice but to HAVE TO HAVE A face to face INTERACTION WITH THIS CREEP cause he parked himselves outside my freaking tanning booth door.  THEN HE went THE EXTRA MILE- EARNING him my self dubed TITLE: Captain of all Creeps~ when he handed me his FN business card (which was not even a business card- just had his slimy contact info)! I've inquired with gym staff twice about his constance presencs. Both Times I Was informed: He takes it apon himself to: ******monitor the parking lot********** ******FOR THE MEMBERS SAFETY*****!!!?!? - because it used be a "hotspot" for t/ homeless.   YES, HOMELESS. During My 1st visit, a female gym member waiting for her cab outside- came back inside the gym to wait from her cab- and asked me about this same street sweeper operator- because he had just offered her a ride home and she thought he was strange.  Hey Guy- if your reading this- YOU NEED TO STOP. If you are looking to get RiPpEd, this is probably not your gym. If you are looking for 5-star service, and to be pampered and tended to hand and foot, this is not your gym. If you are looking for fancy machines, this may not be your gym either. However, if you are looking to get fit(ter) or just to stay fit, this gym is for you. As they say "You Belong" Loads of treadmills, good amount of other cardio machines, and decent selection of weight machines. Unlike many other PF locations (based on reviews) nearly all machines here are in working order. The only problem I have with many of the treadmills is the cord for iPod on many does not work, and when it does only goes through one ear. Loads of TVs Gym, restrooms, and locker-rooms are clean, and not smelly. For $10/month, you get what you pay for. * Star deducted because of broken cords, and could-be-better weight machine organization. read more

Nice place to workout anytime. Clean with equipment kept in good order. PF does pride itself on rules that distance itself from other gym's though but are not always enforced. My personal complaint is a single member taking 3 or 4 machines or stations at a time and the staff just ignoring it or even when it's brought to their attention they refuse to confront the offender. read more

I have been coming to this Planet Fitness for about 8 years now and absolutely love it! There are enough of each cardio machine where there are never waits to get on, as well as a very large selection of weight training machines and various other training rooms. However, the reason I am now choosing to write a review after not doing so for 8 years is because I had a really good experience today thanks to a stellar employee, Yesenia. Yesenia went above and beyond to help me with questions I had about my membership. She handled the evening gym rush all by herself, even when it was busy, while still being attentive to me. Nice way to start out the New Year. Nope, not new to the gym. This is, unfortunately, an ongoing issue - non circuit room users routinely monopolize the machines and aren't receptive to those that try to work through. Big space in the stripmall. They have a crap load of treadmills and fair number of machines. Apparently no classes. I'm a lifter but like the bare essentials. They have little free weight options - including no free standing bench presses or squat racks - all machine-sorts. Which I don't like. So didn't have what I wanted. Also, they have bagel mornings and pizza days - which I find amusing but in a sad way. Come in and work off 1/4 of the horrible sugar/salt filled calories we'll feed you while you're here. I asked the staff why pizza days and they sorta shrugged and one made a comment about giving ppl what they want. It should be about offering what's healthy as opposed to catering to our desire for junk food. read more

Negatives: pretty much a glorified women's section at a regular gym. There are no bench presses, squat racks, millitary presses, or any other type of freeweight machines... dumbbells only go up to 75 pounds. No stair master. This place is pretty cool. The people working there are really nice and helpful and a lot of them workout there as well (I like staff members who know about what they work for). The staff is also always cleaning and making sure things are neat. This place isn't like other PFs either and that's a good thing. A lot of moderate to advanced athletes and gym goers can be found here as well as the more casual gym attendant. I like that they have free weights and barbells because a lot of other locations don't have them and that is just silly, it's a gym after all. Also I'm pretty sure the lunk alarm doesn't work because people, including me, drop the weights pretty loud at times and I have absolutely nothing wrong with that. It's a gym not a library. I took off a star because, and this may not be their fault, but it takes forever for broken equipment to get fixed. For instance this winter I did a lot of my indoor cycling training on their machines but 3 out of the 5 were broken for about a month and the other 2 were always in use so I just stopped training for that time I just wish they would fix things a little faster. Overall great experience but if it ever becomes more like the other "non-gym" PF locations I will drop my membership in a heartbeat. read more

I have been a member at Planet Fitness for two and a half years the place is pretty clean you always see them wiping down exercise machines with rags it's $ 9.99 a month or $ 19.99 a month the difference is with the $ 19.99 a month which i have you get spring water, sport drinks etc, half off you can do tanning they have 5 tanning beds my girlfriend and I go to Florida, Bahamas, the Islands so the tanning comes in handy so when we go on a vacations we don't go there white as a ghost and get a sunburn we use to go to just tanning places and they would charge upwards of @ 60.00 dollars a month so this is included which is good.......they also have massage chairs and beds so you can watch TV and get a massage. Another good thing is with this $ 19.99 a month you can bring a friend for free i believe 4,5 times a month i do wish they had a pool or sauna but hey for $ 9.99 a month not bad.... read more

I am a regular at this gym and I go around 7-8PM due to the fact I work full time. Around this time, it is busy. Especially from 5-8PM. They actually give you a chart to see when you can avoid the crowd. As you first go in the staff ALWAYS greets you with a friendly smile and asks how you are. I also LOVE that there is an unlimited amount you can bring a guest IF you have a black card membership. Also unlimited Tanning, Massage beds, and Red Light rooms. For the people curious about the Tanning: They have 5 rooms available at all times. (Unless occupied obviously.) and they are a good size. Not to huge not to small. The beds don't have a setting to change the intensity so all are the same. One thing that does bother people (Not myself personally) is that you have to clean your own bed after using it. Some people DON'T , so if you bothered by that, there is paper towels and a spray bottle in there so just wipe it down. Also, The longest you can tan is 15 minutes. I personally love the tanning beds. It's a + for me and relaxing before-after a work-out. Okay so, besides the tanning. There are 3 separate rooms. An abs room, a stretching room and the main area with machines and free weights. (The Dumbbells-free weights go up to only 75 lbs.) The TVs are faced towards all the cardio machines, and the weight training machines are on the opposite side. I like that because you focus more when strength training and cardio goes by faster if you're distracted haha. The machines are brand new, shiny and clean. The employees always make sure the floors and tools are always clean and replaced. The bathrooms are always clean and include changing rooms, lockers, hair dryers, stalls, and showers. Everything a bathroom would need. I love this place. (: My opinion: For women, great place to lose weight and get toned. It's a very comfortable, fun experience especially when accompanied. For men, It's a great place to get in shape and stay in shape, but if you are looking to get REALLY big. It's not really the place for you. read more

Best $10 You Can Spend. The fact that any person can possibly complain about a clean, well maintained gym that has tons of cardio equipment and lots of machines boggles my mind. This is the 3rd PF I have been a member of and by far the best one. Again, $10 a month....not sure what you are expecting but this is definitely worth every penny. To Whom It May Concern: I am writing this letter to inform you of an incident that happened on Wednesday, December 26th, 2012 at approximately 4:45 PM at the Planet Fitness located at 29 Traders Way, Salem, MA 01970. The Manager, Corey Jusczak, approached me fifteen minutes into my workout on the elliptical machine. He informed me that I had to remove my purple lululemon athletica headband because it violated the gym's policy against headwear. When I asked why this headband designed by an athletic company (lululemon athletica) for the purpose of working out could not be worn at the gym, Mr. Jusczak stated that it was because it resembled a doo-rag, and any such headgear was not allowed. He then told me that this policy against all headgear was displayed clearly on signs across the gym, and he offered to cancel my membership as an easy solution when I pressed for more detail. I decided to accept Mr. Jusczak's offer and canceled my membership on the spot. It is appalling to me that headbands designed for the gym are not allowed at any Planet Fitness facility due to corporate policy. I had been going to this gym for a number of months, each session with a similar lululemon athletica headband, and had never been asked to take the headband off. When I signed up for the membership, I was never told about this policy, which is surprising considering I was wearing a headband at the time. In fact, Mr. Jusczak was even the one that signed me into the gym on that day, and he never gave me heads up that my headband was not allowed. It seemed as if this preposterous policy was enforced out of the blue that day. If a policy is a policy, it should be equally enforced every time since day one. What is even more perplexing is that men are allowed to walk around in hooded sweatshirts/zip-ups and baseball caps over their heads, but that I was not allowed to wear a headband, which partially covered my head. More concerning to me is the implication that this "anti-headgear" has for minorities. As I mentioned, Mr. Jusczak's explanation for Planet Fitness' policy against all headgear is because it resembled a doo-rag. Although I do understand that gang members sometimes wear doo-rags, Planet Fitness' policy against all headgear that resembles a doo-rag implies that any person wearing such headgear is involved in related illicit behavior. Such a policy is unfair, stereotypical, and most significantly, racist. Many minority groups (predominantly African-Americans) wear doo-rags as a way to create and/or maintain cornrows and weaves. Your policy makes it impossible for anyone who chooses to wear their hair in this style (either for personal or cultural preferences) to visit your gym, and therefore, is unfairly preventing minorities who commonly wear doo-rags for fashion or cultural purposes from visiting your facilities. Furthermore, your policy against all headgear (including athletic headbands) makes exercising incredibly uncomfortable for anyone with long hair and/or bangs. For the same reasons that your policy against headgear is unfairly preventing minorities from visiting your gym, it prevents anyone with long hair (mostly impacted by this are women) from freely participating in cardio activities because their hair constantly gets in their faces. Personally, I have never been able to workout without a headband, and I will continue to workout with a headband, just not at a Planet Fitness facility. Planet Fitness' corporate policy against all headgear is senseless and unfairly targets women and minority groups. I will never step foot in another Planet Fitness, nor will I refer anyone I know looking for a fitness facility to sign up. I will make sure that any prospective gym goers know that they cannot wear head accessories designed for the gym at Planet Fitness, and that their customer service mentality is to quickly suggest canceling memberships before working to quell a situation. Planet Fitness' motto prides itself in being able to workout in a "judgment free zone," but my experience is the opposite: anyone that challenges unfair, irrational, and racially charged corporate policies is immediately pushed away. While the price for this gym is low...and a good deal for someone who actually uses the gym...their policies and follow through for anyone who wishes to cancel their membership are so ridiculous I would sue them if I had the money to do so. My husband has tried twice now to cancel physically going to the location with their required "handwritten note" stating how he wished to cancel his membership...now 5 months later we are still being charged...they still have him listed as active and apparently nothing we can do but to go down again and cancel. For a $19.99/mo Black Card membership--and convenience to Market Basket, Home Depot, and all the other places I do errands--this place will do. This despicable branch requires 2 forms of payment, and if one is incorrect, you will be charged an additional $10 service fee per month, doubling the initial membership fee for most. I signed up during a breast cancer promotion while home from college and what initially was a good deed ended up making this branch double their membership profits. To make things worse, the assistant manager attempted to justify this predatory policy under the guise of my own lack of personal financial responsibility. Do yourself a favor, DO NOT spend your money at a company looking to squeeze every dime out of you, since you are just one in 5 million members. Save yourself the headache. The gym is fairly decent but if something breaks, it will take up to 8 weeks sometimes for it to get fixed. The staff has zero customer service. For fun I counted how many times I was greeted with a smile and it was twice in a 4 week period of me going 4 to 5 times a week. Now if you happen to forget your scan card they won't let you in. I pay to work out here and my car (with key chain scanner on it) is having work done just for today and I can't workout? I live closer to the Salem location than others but find myself driving to revere or Medford, where they realize they don't exist without the customer. I gave two stars simply because it is cheap, but you get what you pay for. The manager Lauren is miserable and wouldn't even give me the customer service number. She said no companies do- so for fun I asked the coffee place, department store and gas station I went to after and they all have them and gave them to me. I've been a member for 3 months now and I have no major complaints -- plenty of equipment, 20 televisions,2 massage beds, 2 massage chairs, and a few tanning beds. I have the black card and love being able to bring a guest. The locker room is spacious with plenty of lockers --showers weren't the cleanest the time I showered here but I've only showered here once so I don't know if that's the norm. Staff are friendly! Environment is not intimidating and price is affordable! I would recommend this gym to my friends! read more

PF is okay. Ive been a member about three times. They have a massage table and tanning for black card members. This is a 24 hr location so it is good for the night owls. Since it is PF, it does tend to get packed. Beware for the holiday season, it is the time most people tend to decide they want to get fit. If you are a person dedicated to your fitness you may want to go elsewhere. If you are just trying to keep fit here and there then this may be the place for you. No babysitting service so do not expect it. The customer service members are always nice. It is a good place for a beginner workout person. read more
