This is a really great place to hang out with your partner or friends. My only criticism is that it had a limited beer selection. Another must when visiting Marfa, Texas, this bar reminds me of a hangout for Peter Pan and The Lost Boys. And that's mainly because you walk through the doors and into an open air adult playground - complete with a teepee. Yes, a TEEPEE, y'all! Ahhhh, gotta love Marfa. The majority of Planet Marfa is an outdoor area - there's a center bar, lots of seating, live music, ping pong ... and the friendliest folks in town. In another world One of the things I love most about Marfa, is the eccentricity of it. Planet Marfa has art, music and a Teepee. Who doesn't love a teepee? The layout is hacienda style, the inner patio is spacious and inviting. It's made for the outdoors, serviced by a bar island in the center. It reminds me of a beach bar, but without the ajacent large body of water. Picnic tables and outdoor furniture are abundant, there is also a covered area with pool table and darts in the back. However, the teepee is my favorite spot, it's bigger on the inside. The bottom has been dug out to form a large meeting area 10 feet below the surface. The biggest drawback is that the only serve beer and wine. However, I was told that I could bring in outside liquor. You will just have to pay a dollar set up fee per cup of ice, which isn't bad. Lastly, watch out for Dawn from The Pink Frog, she cooks a deliciously huge homemade burger. Can't wait to come back! Out of this world read more

One of the people at Chinati said to only go here if I liked 'hip places.' Perhaps she was looking down on hipsters, which is fun for some people. But either way, this place doesn't exude a hipper than thou attitude at all. I was traveling alone and both bartenders were extremely attentive. Not only that, but they talked to me! Which didn't happen ANYWHERE ELSE I went in Marfa by a local. I made lots of friends with other visitors, but this was the first place where the locals were super kind. This is one of the loveliest bars I've ever been to. There are so many different rooms. You can walk down into a teepee, go sit on a bus, go up to a little balcony above the bar. I loved it! I spent some time talking with the aunt of the owner. Her name is Dixie and she is 100 years old! She is so wonderful and I loved conversing with her. My sister and I visited Planet Marfa after our AirBnb host recommended it to us. We were greeted by a gregarious staff member at the door who made us feel welcome. Outstanding bar! After checking out two rather underwhelming bars in the area, my friend and I decided to give one more slice of Marfa nightlife a chance before calling it a night. And I'm so glad we did. It was a balmy fall evening, so we quickly descended on the patio which definitely had a fun tiki vibe... a band was setting up, we grabbed some cheap drinks and settled in. We really weren't prepared for what was about to happen next: the gorgeous lead singer opened his mouth and unleashed this powerful voice that rendered us helpless. We were forced to stay the entire set and find a reason to say hello to the band afterwards... once a Penny Lane, always a Penny Lane! But without the drugs and sex, natch. As it turns out, the NYC-based musicians stumbled upon this little desert town and awesome music venue en route to their next gig. The darling owners encouraged the small group of patrons to cheer the band on and demand an encore - which of course we didn't mind - and they gave it to us. Bravo! If I ever find my way back to Marfa, I'm setting up camp here for the duration of my trip. read more

We stumbled upon this establishment, on a cold evening with much resent. We should have visited during the summer, our trip thus far had been such a bummer. So there we found a sign so subtle, "Beergarden" give me one on the double! We took a turn for the best, our weary bodies needed some rest. They've got a regular old bar, an upstairs deck that seats 8, a room for ping pong, a separate room for darts, and best of all - a teepee. Here's the deal with the teepee - you walk down a set of stairs and you are in an enclosed circular patio area that is covered by a huge teepee. The teepee's patio area has nice ambiance because it is lined with white lights and it has a fire pit. The effect is very campfire and very novel. This was one of the reasons I was left wondering why I drove 8 hrs to get to Marfa. I should have went the opposite way, and gone to New Orleans. Barely a "Hi" came from the owners/ staff of this bar. Our time here was full of awkward interactions, and a stare down from the older crowd hanging out around the bar. Easily the coolest place in Marfa. Once the disappointment of whatever it is you're looking for in Marfa kicks in, head over to this place in the afternoon for a few cold ones, maybe some light food, and enjoy the well thought out landscape they provide. Plenty of seating available; and yes they've converted a minibus into more seating, and yes, they have a great teepee (sp) that leads below ground to more seating and away from the heat. The owners live on site, so this is practically their backyard, which would make anyone envious. Four stars because I think "beer garden" in the name is misleading (only Blue Moon and one local beer on tap and a handful of bottled beers), and like everything else in Marfa, a little steep on the prices. Best bar in Marfa, hands down. The bar is open-air with lots of different stylized sections, all with a retro feel. There's a small balcony with seating, there's a covered space with a ping pong table and jukebox that looks like it's right out of a Wes Anderson film, and so much more, even a little teepee with art for sale on the inside. There was live music when we were there, which was really nice. It wasn't too loud and you could still have a conversation but you could tune in to enjoy it. They have a limited menu, but the food is delicious. We got "nachos" but don't eat cheese so they topped our chips with refried beans and delicious pico made in-house. We also got sausages with kraut piled high. So good. Our only regret was that we didn't spend more time here. Highly recommend. read more

Planet Marfa is great. The proper expectations should be in place however. There isn't much variety in the way of food or beer, but the nachos are simple and delicious- do NOT skip the pico. The beer is mostly middle-of-the-road bottles (unexpected) and there is no liquor (expected). Also, they're only open on the weekend. The atmosphere is fun and has the "Marfa feel" without being almost satirically hip like some other places around town. The bartender was a nice guy who did his job well and made good conversation. The owners were there and made us feel welcome. It was a good experience. There is plenty of (mostly outdoor) seating, a television, and a ping pong table. When I find my way back to Marfa I'll be stopping by here again. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

This eclectic patio is a great place to relax and enjoy a couple of beers. They don't have much on tap (in fact, just two taps total--one for Coors Light and the other rotating a selection from Big Bend Brewing in Alpine), but there was a pretty broad bottle selection. Also, they had Big Bend Brewing on tap, which is probably the only local craft brewery within 100 miles. The vibe here is great. I didn't get a chance to eat any of the food but it looked good. However, you want to know what REALLY makes this place? The owners Jon and Aase Johnson! And, no, I wasn't hired by them to write this - LOL This was my first time visiting Marfa. I heard they have a "BUS" that can take you to see the Marfa Lights. It's $8 per person, minimum $64 so my girlfriend and I rented the bus all to ourselves and set out to see the lights...with cocktails in hand (and we didn't have to worry about driving! Whoo-Hoo!!). Jon took us out to see the lights, gave us the history and showed us where to look and low and behold...we saw them and it was amazing and awesome and it would not have been the same without Jon's guidance. So, if you're in Marfa, stop by and see if he's willing to take the bus out to see the lights. And, while you're there sit down, enjoy the cool environment, friendly people, addictive peanuts and eat the hotdog that I wanted to eat for me! read more

My husband took me to my first trip to Marfa on my 29th birthday in April. The town was precious, but to this day the most memorable part was meeting Jon and his wife Aase. They have to be the most amazing couple I have ever met. They were kind, gracious and a treasure to talk to. The bar was a bit slow since it was Easter weekend. Definitely a "must-do" on the Marfa list. I grew up in Alpine, but I always plan a day/evening in Marfa on visits back home. We stopped by during one of Planet's busiest evenings, during Viva Big Bend. We still found good seating (next to the teepee) and were able to relax and take in the funky atmosphere. After ordering a couple drinks, we got up and explored the library/games area and had some fun mingling with the locals. One of the staff members showed us how to play one of the games, which we were thoroughly unsuccessful at, but had a good laugh. I would say the main reason to visit PM is to take in the ambiance, get an Instagram photo with the out-of-this-world decor, and meet a few local people. We will definitely be coming back on our next trip in February. read more

I came on a Saturday right when this spot opened at 2pm. It was so pleasant! Gorgeous weather, no wait at the bar and we could pick where we'd like to sit. We sat upstairs to enjoy the weather. We spent a couple of hours up there sipping on a beer (pretty standard selection) and eventually had to head out. By this time, it was PACKED. There were so many hipsters, I thought I had landed in Seattle circa 1995. One girl was even wearing a beret. We had to close out and this was the only negative experience. There was only one bar tender for the raging masses, heaven help her. It took forever. Not her fault, there should have been more on staff. read more

She told the patron that she would not serve her anymore drinks (despite having served her zero drinks) simply because she couldn't decide what she wanted. I was in Marfa for the Railroad Revival Tour in 2011, and had some of the most fun on my trip with my two best friends here. Great bar food (chips and guacamole), great beers, friendly service, lots of ping pong. I wish there were more places like it elsewhere. The setup is unique and inviting: As you enter the walls, you're in a big courtyard. In the middle is a bar open on two ends, with a small roof on top where people can sit. In one corner of the courtyard, there's a huge teepee. And all around the courtyard are small open-air house-like buildings where people can play ping pong, darts, etc. You're also certain to meet some friendly and interesting people here.
