I always thought Walnut Creek needed a zero waste refill store so I was so happy to see that Planet Renu somewhat recently opened their doors. I love refilling my lotion, dish soap, hand soap, shampoo, and conditioner at the store (or at the Shadelands Farmers Market where they also have a booth). The prices for refills come out to less than what's in the stores. Plus Planet Renu had a whole bunch of other eco friendly products that are always fun to explore!

The store itself is really cute, with useful gadgets and cute towels and knick-knacks. I was part of a group of 12 for the Express Spanish class. There are many different cuisines to choose from, and different durations (e.g., express-1.5 hours, standard-2.5 hours, ultimate-3.5 hours). What made this class run so smoothly is all the prep work that was done ahead of time. Each member had their own apron with their name on it. The cutting boards, ingredients, and tools were laid out around the kitchen. Bruce, the owner/instructor, first gave us demos on knife technique, garlic crushing, and juicing with a fluicher (flat-juicer). Many of these tools are available at their store. Then we worked on different parts of the menu in teams of three. Some of us cut tomatoes, while other crushed garlic. As far as actual cooking on the stove, only 2 members were hands on. After cooking, we sat down at their dining table and ate our meal together. Menu: Gazpacho, Garlic shrimp, Pan con Tomate, Manchego y Chorizo Tostada. Everything tasted good, but my favorite was the garlic shrimp. Hygiene was very important throughout. Longer hair had to be tied, and once we washed our hands, we were no longer allowed to touch our phones. However, Bruce did a great job of taking plenty of pictures for us. Overall, a very fun way to socialize while making something together. I highly recommend this for a team building experience.

So I approached a female employee for help, who was all smiles while helping another white couple before me. As soon as I approached, that smile went away. I asked if she could check for me if the placemats I wanted were sold online...to which she curtly replied "YOU can look up the sku number". She spent time with me on the Timber vase and actually knew her stuff. That was great. But then something happened that made me uncomfortable. I was charging my laptop near the checkout and taking a call. A staff member walked up really close to me and just stood there silent. Didn't say hi. Didn't ask if I needed anything. Just stood there looking at me. I called Crate & Barrel and asked if there's a rule against charging a laptop in the store. They said no, it's fine. So I don't know why he did that. It made me feel like I was doing something wrong when I wasn't. I like shopping there and I was planning to buy the vase. But that one person made me hesitant to come back. I hope you can talk to your team about how to treat customers.

We were not looking to purchase anything and we were just walking around the mall and got tired, entered the store and sat on a couch that was displayed first thing when we opened the door. Instantly, we knew this was a nice sofa we both wanted. It was a beautiful stain resistant fabric couch that has a chaise, with large sitting depth. The sofa was one of the newest design in the store and after checking that they had good warranty and each furniture design stays in market for many years for us to alternate or modify the setting of the sofa in case we move out to a different home. This Korean lady Ms. Choi helped us out and she was very knowledgeable. She made sure we get all the discounts available in the store and was very patient with the purchase process. Not only that, we even loved the delivery process. The delivery men handled the furniture very well and knew what they were doing! It was so fast and efficient. We had this sofa for 2 months now and we still love it to this day. I think the pricing is reasonable for the quality as well. It was a happy coincidence that we stopped by the store and ended up spending $$$ to get a sofa in the middle of Sunday.

The sales were very exciting. First there was a storewide 20% off sale. And then some of the individual pieces had some pretty impressive reductions. However, remember this is an outlet store. I found some of the most heavily discounted equipment had cosmetic flaws. On the other hand, I went to the Le Creuset store two decades ago and got myself a Dutch oven which had a cosmetic flaw, and that thing has been working great the whole time. But before you go to town, check to see if the warranty is in effect. It's kind of pity that my kitchen is so well stocked with equipment. Between the discounts and the excellent selection, I would been in deep trouble with this store several decades ago. While it's easy to focus on the knives and the cookware there is a lot more to the store. They carry an incredible number of small kitchen accessories that can solve common problems. The expert and friendly sales person showed me a really nice magnetic bar, which can be used to mount knives in otherwise wasted spaces in the kitchen. Unfortunately, for the sales person, I already had one of these. But I can definitely testify that this is an incredibly useful device. Some people complain that magnetic bars ruin your knives. But you have to know the trick to using them. Basically you have to kind of peel the knife off the magnetic bar and this prevents scratching and other minor damage. Also, if your knives are looking scratched, there is a whetstone with an incredibly fine grit that will put a mirror polish on your knives. Scratches are not the disaster you think they are. So stop feeling bad about all your kitchen problems and go to this store which has more solutions than you realize. Remember to bring your knives if you need them sharpened.

The place is not particularly large, but they have a knack for utilizing space without feeling cluttered. I stopped in recently because I happen to be in the area and heard they carry Smithy, American made cast iron cookware. In particular I was looking for the carbon steel line of Smithy which is supposedly lighter in weight than their cast iron line. The young sales associate helped me locate the Smithy display. He was aware of the brand and knew where it was exactly in the shop. Lovely, gorgeous pieces. Pricing was on par. After doing my weightlifting kitchen curl test with a 10 inch skillet, I concluded that it is less weighty but I'm too weak to handle even that carbon steel weight. However I am uncommonly lacking the normal upper body strength. So you most likely will not have the same issue as I.
