Blakeley and I are regulars at Planet Thai as it is fairly close to our house and it's our favorite Thai in Lex. She loves to have the " drunken noodles" which are similar to Pad Thai except fatter noodles. While the specialties are Thai dishes, there are also Chinese dishes available. The beef salad is spicy and well done, as is the pad thai. I often get the coconut curry (panang) with shrimp, which is sweet and spicy; it comes with carrots and green beans in the sauce. The Thai iced tea is exactly like the tea I had when I lived in Thailand one summer. It's really, really sweet and creamy. It's authentic and my daughter loves it. Both the spring rolls and the chicken satay are predictable and solid choices for appetizers. It's in a small shopping center on Nicholasville road, and the parking is sufficient. You can usually walk in and get seated right away. You'll like it. read more

Love this place. I grew up in Lexington so this is a common place to go for locals. Also anything is good on the menu, but my favorites are basil fried rice, Thai peanut delight, and pad se ew. I tend to get most dishes with chicken, but the beef and roast pork are good too. Definetly should give this one a try, they don't disappoint! read more

Quantity over quality I'm in search of a great Thai place in Lexington, but I've heard mixed reviews of Planet Thai. I decided to give a go this weekend. I judge every Thai place on two meals, pad Thai and drunken noodles. I went with the Pork pad Thai at spicy level 3 and the shrimp drunken noodles at spicy level 5. Their spice levels range from 1-5. I like it spicy. Their curbside service was fast and convenient. When they handed over the bag, it must have weighed 5 lbs and I for sure thought they gave me the wrong meal...they did not. As I was driving home, the aroma building in the car made my mouth water. I couldn't wait to dive in. When I opened the container, the plant ingredients were nicely organized on top. When I had my first bite, the excited build up turned out just to be a tease. The Pad Thai had a very muted flavor. The dish was extremely under seasoned and lacked any hint of spice. The drunken noodles at their highest spice level was the same. I had to dress up both dishes with pepper, hot sauces, and spices in my cabinets to make it an average meal. DO NOT SPEND MORE THAN $50! The food here is amazing. However, be warned: their policies are very consumer-unfriendly. I recently placed a pickup order, signed the receipt, added a tip, and took the food home. When I looked at the receipt, I was shocked to find that an automatic 18% gratuity had already been added to my bill. When I called back, I was told that this was automatically added to any order over $50 (and this is apparently AFTER tax, because my initial subtotal was slightly under $50). I fully understand adding an automatic gratuity when dining in with a large group of people. However, it makes no sense to add one for a pickup order, and it is even less savory to do so without telling the customer, who then may end up tipping twice as much as they intended to. Traveling through Lexington on our way to Nashville and we were in the mood for some good Thai curry and found Planet Thai on Yelp, so glad we did! Service was prompt and courteous and the food was served quick and delicious. I had the Pineapple Crispy Duck Curry and was blown away by the texture and taste! The portion was huge and all vegetables were fresh and the red curry was on point. My son has the Green Curry Chicken and was as well impressed by the taste. He said the regular style had a nice level of heat in the Curry. We will save this place for a return visit. read more

Really had high expectations for their shrimp Pad Thai, as it comes highly recommended, but wow was it bad. It was alarmingly sweet. Like they had put a cup of sugar in it. There wasn't enough soy sauce that could have balanced it out. Could have included more veggies as well. Second, we had a table of five and we sat in the back. The service was not good after we got our food. Completely forgotten about. I got up and found their stash of to go boxes and helped myself. I decided to come here for lunch bc I wanted to try some Thai papaya salad...sadly this place doesn't serve them. So I decided to try their Seafood Tom Yum Soup, Thai crispy spring rolls and Beef Pad Thai (medium heat). First off their lunch comes with a small hot and sour soup and one spring roll. I didn't care for the hot and sour soup, it was more sour and didn't really have a good balance. I am not sure if you can substitute the soup but I will def the next time I come here. The Seafood Tom Yum soup was delicious! The broth and the seafood (mussels, shrimp, scallops, squid) tasted delightful, spicy, sweet and tangy. It was my favorite out of my lunch. The spring roll was delicious as well but nothing stood out for me except for the sauce it came with-now that I can dip anything in and it'll be good. Now the Pad Thai...yes I am a Pad Thai snob and their version was pretty good except I would prefer more eggs on mine and theirs were a bit too sweet for my taste. The beef had nice flavor and the noodles were a little too done for me. I like mine with a little bite to it as well. I also would prefer some sprouts on my pad Thai, I think theirs was cooked in. IMO I think this place is pretty good place to get your Thai cravings satiated. I still feel like it's a bit Americanized, I just wished there were more Authentic Thai restaurants available in Lexington. Let me know if you know a great place! I had the yellow curry and my brother got the red curry. I thought the yellow tasted great, the only problem was the potatoes and carrots were still pretty hard. My brother only ate the meat since he couldnt even chop through the carrot with a fork. Other than half the meal being tough to get through,.. I think a 3 will suffice. Quick question though... how come I only seen white people running this joint? I mean, I dont buy Chinese food from Indians. Nothing racist bout it, I just enjoy authenticity. read more

Planet Thai is not the best Thai restaurant of all time; there are no culinary revelations to be had here. BUT, if you want Thai food and you live in Lexington, this is your best bet. It's tasty, it's clean, they always get high scores on their food inspections, and it's consistent. I won't take any time to detail why the other Thai places in town don't make the grade, for me, because this is a review about Planet Thai. Sean M mentioned his surprise and dismay at the fried Spring roll. While, I would not exactly be surprised at that, because lots of places fry their spring rolls, I understand his confusion, as the nomenclature seems to be somewhat vague. What he was hoping for was a "salad roll", which is a fresh rice paper wrapper filled with tofu, bean thread noodles, julienned carrots, cucumber, and Thai basil. The Salad Rolls at Planet Thai are fat, chubby rolls served with a duo of dipping sauces, sweet and sour, and peanut (I posted a picture). If you would rather have a warm, crispy roll, go the Spring Roll route. The spring rolls are very slender and much more dainty, however... Also, the stuffed chicken wings and chicken satay are quite yummy as well. I have to make myself not order them because I would never have room for dinner otherwise. When I come to Planet Thai, I come for curry. This is their strong suit by far. They have many other tasty dishes here, but the curries are where it's at. Green or Red, over rice or noodles, Planet Thai makes a mean Thai curry. Coconutty, rich, lots of flavor, and lots of heat. When I am craving Thai curry, but not the fatty goodness of coconut milk, I get the Gang Pah (sp?) which is a coconut-milk free, and is perhaps even more flavorful. The slices of Asian eggplant are gorgeously purple, and very tender. One of my favorites. As another reviewer mentioned, the Yellow Curry Shrimp is a thing of beauty- and you can order it w/o shrimp, if you want to go the vegetarian route (it does, however, sound quite silly to order "yellow curry shrimp, hold the shrimp" but as a confirmed shrimp hater, I do what I have to. The mango pieces blow my mind...) After years of currying it up at Planet Thai, I ventured off the menu to order the "Asparagus in Garlic Sauce" which is a chef's special on the back of the menu. I still have trouble getting over how tasty that particular dish is. Probably my asparagus addiction speaking here, but give it a try! Drunken noodles are another dish done well here, and the stir fried egg that comes with it is so substantial you will think it's chicken. Seriously. I sent it back the first time I got it (during a stint of vegetarianism) but I was assured that it was not chicken, but egg. Intriguingly meaty egg... I'm not a Pad Thai person, but several of my Pad Thai loving friends have said that Planet Thai's version is not their favorite. So, take this third hand information how you will. In short, go here, order curry. Some of their other menu items are stellar, and some are really pretty blah. But you can't go wrong with the curry. First time eating at Planet Thai and it was a little bit of a disappointment. Started off with the fried squid and it was the worst that I've gotten at a restaurant before. Tasted like something I'd get at a local Walmart in the frozen foods section. Ordered the Massaman Curry for main dish and it was also a let down. Curry was runny and potatoes has dark spots in them. Carrots were not fully cooked. The staff were friendly and it was a good environment. I think that they have sacrificed quality of food for quick wait time which was a mistake. A stretch to get one star. We were in town for business and were looking for a light asian meal for dinner and found Planet Thai on Yelp. Everything looked great so we gave it a go. We were greeted and seated upon arrival, this was the end of our good experience. We ordered Planet Thai Rolls for appetizer to be served Spring Rolls (close enough right?). We are not sure what the Planet Thai Rolls tasted like but the Spring Rolls were not nice at all, a lot of pastry and not much filing. We also ordered a Pinapple Shrimp Curry and a Penang Chicken Curry for entree. Having eaten Thai food all over the world including Thailand this food was hands down the worst I have ever had. There was a very small ratio of protein compared to vegetables and the curry sauce was very, very runny. The curries lacked flavor and we did not finish them. We were asked if we would like a box to go, I replied "no thank you, I really didn't enjoy my meal as it didn't meet my expectations", through waiter then said okay and moved onto the next table. My pad Thai, ordered medium spicy, tasted great but wasn't very spicy. The portions of food were huge! Price: Fair. Some items seemed to be a bit over priced but where it's located, I was expecting the inflation. Atmosphere: Reminded me of any other Asian restaurant, but with a more diner feel. My husband and I are in town visiting for one night and we wanted thai food. We found multiple places on yelp, several of which were much closer to our hotel. However, based on the menu, prices, and reviews, we chose planet thai. We were in kind of a hurry but we were immediately seated and everything quickly came out once we ordered. I chose the red curry noodles with tofu (spice level 2), my husband chose the drunken noodles with tofu (spice level 3), and we shared an order of crab rangoon. The crab rangoon were quite good but we both agreed the plum sauce was almost like honey. Not bad, just different. Our entrees came out not too long after our appetizer. We tasted each other's meals and I am still convinced they accidentally switched our spice levels. My noodles were spicier than his but not too spicy. Both dishes were good and the portions were huge. I wasn't a huge fan of their tofu. It was pretty mushy and not firm at all. But I would still order it again. I liked that they had a curry option with rice noodles instead of rice, but my entree actually came out with a side of rice as well. I really wanted to try the pad thai because it looked awesome in the pictures from other yelpers. Sadly we don't live close so we may never go back to try other things. Hello yelpers. I have been a cook and in the restaurant industry for 6 years. I dont know how to run a business but i DO know how to prepare and cook meals as well as conduct proper customer service. I don't think I've ever had to leave a restaurant review, but my experience made me download yelp just to say this. This has been an awful experience. I walked in and was greeted by an unfriendly cashier. She talked sharply and forcefully. She also made sure to toss my card back to me and ask, sarcastically, if there was anything else i needed. Maybe she just has a sassy personality. Idk... BUT This is what i was most disappointed with. The food was bland. everything was rubbery and over cooked/dry. I also ordered level 4 out of 5 for spicy. It tasted like they threw some extra peppercorns in. As a cook, i was disgusted by the neglect and the lack of passion that went into this meal. I haven't tried a huge variety of the food here, but it's because I like the special mixed fried rice so much that I order it almost every time. It has fried rice, barbecue pork, shrimp, chicken, broccoli, and carrots and it is so yummy. The Pad Thai is also good, and the appetizer sampler is fun to share when ordering with a group. The portions are huge for most things and are a good value, but be careful with the spice level. I have what I would call a decent spice tolerance and level 2 to 3 is where I top out comfortably. The portion was huge and I had plenty to take home with me for dinner. Since Pad Thai left town this has been my favorite Thai restaurant in Lexington. They put lots of things on top of the pad Thai noodles and serve a generous portion. Two nights ago, however, we picked up two orders of pad Thai, 1five star hot for me and one three star hot for my husband. We then shopped next-door at Habibis and then went home which is about a half an hour away. We got home and my five star had virtually no flavor whatsoever in and of itself and definitely NO spiciness. There were no pepper flakes in mine at all. My husband's three star hot had some chili peppers but it was almost flavorless & was also not spicy at all. I called the restaurant to talk to them about it and the man hung up on me. I called back and he listen to my comments and asked if I wanted to come back and get another order. I explain to him it would be a half an hour driving in in a half an hour driving home and I was not willing to do that at this time. He hung up on me again after telling me just call me back later. I did not call him back later. I guess I will just use Archa Nine. read more

Planet Thai portions are huge and we ate 5 meals out of 2 orders of pad Thai. I ordered this through door dash and it doesn't allow you to pick the spice so we were disappointed in the lack of heat since we love Thai spicy (even when no one believes that's what we want). The options on their menu is very diverse depending on what you want but I'm a lover of pad Thai and can never convince myself to try anything else. I will say if you are a foodie, you have to try the Tom Ka soup! First time visit, never eaten Thai food. I asked the server for his recommendations and he said he'd only worked there for a month and didn't know much about the food. The dining room was clean, but the staff seemed frantic. I'm guessing they were short handed. Their health dept score was only 95, so I was a bit nervous. We ordered the fried won tons, which were overcooked. No one asked us about them. I ordered the Paradise Chicken which was very good. I have no idea if it was real Thai food though. The food was good enough for me to return, but I'd need to see a big improvement in service to keep coming back. We were there under 90 minutes, mostly waiting on our orders to be taken and food to arrive. Yet the most attention that we received was the 3 times the lady asked us if we wanted to have a box. My wife and I were driving home from Nashville and I wanted Thai Food. However, we didn't want to drive to the other side of town for food. I originally wanted Pad Thai but ended up getting Drunken Noodles. My wife, on the other hand, got Chicken Pad Thai. We also got fried Tofu. the only Cons were I ordered the Drunken Noodle to be medium spicy, but the food wasn't spicy at all. My wife wanted Shrimp and Chicken Pad Thai, but they ran out of Shrimp. We did order the food within 45 minutes of the places closing. The Pad Thai was a little dry but other than that the food was good. read more
