I was there to pick up my online order and since I live an hour away by freeway, I thought I browse and pick up more plants that catches my eye and had a question for couple of plants. There was a young man and a woman who seemed totally annoyed that I was asking questions. She basically said look up on Google to see what it looks like and went hm hmm clearing her voice in a passive aggressive way. Mind you, I only asked if I can keep the tree pruned to a small size. Beware, if you ask more than one question, they will make you feel unwelcome. I'm an avid gardener who constantly works on my landscape every year changing/adding and my design is never done so naturally I spend a lot on plants and trees. All the nurseries around my place know me as I'm a very good customer and now I'm incorporating more natives for the wildlife and wanted to learn more about them. I will not be going back to this place! I rarely encounter people like these who work at nurseries. If you don't like what you do, work elsewhere so you don't ruin people's moods as nurseries are like sanctuaries for many. read more

I visit these guys regularly. I find the cost of the pots and the pot trays very reasonable. They have a good selection of plants. And they have a few items for sale in a backroom such as hoses, and seeds and other such stuff; including amazing smelling soap! the soap is a little pricey but man - they smell heavenly. read more

While I educated myself at the Theodore Payne Foundation about the jawdropping biodiversity of California's floristic province which has 2500 species endemic to this territory, and in total about 7,000 species, subspecies, and varieties of plants (more than ALL the other states put together), I don't always want to drive out to Sunland to browse for plants. Enter this humble yet feisty plant shop in Northeast LA, that feels more like someone's yard with an intelligently curated selection of California native plants. This place is ideal if you're looking to support ecological restoration of this California territory, ravaged as it has been by causasian squatter brutes who thought erasing the land of its ecological complexes represented "progress". Come in here and you can sense the sort of plant ecology that used to cover these lands 100 years ago. The shrubs and flowers of the "Sage scrub", the "Chaparral", and the "Oak woodland" are pretty and delicate yet hardy enough to withstand long arid periods. They sustain pollinators who co-evolved over millienia with them (and who can't live off the hellscape of Euro lawns, African violets, and South American lilies that now cover the majority of LA residential landscaping). This little courtyard is rich in diverse species, so you'll draw a contrast with the massive shelf space of Home Depot in comparison, that still only has a predictable series of imported flower species that are ill fit in this climate and rely on scarce water to stay alive. Don't visit if you're simply looking for lawn edging decorative flowers that bloom only with morally-reprobate irrigation. DO visit, if you are seeking to replace your lawns--perhaps using the subsidies provided by Metropolitan Water District's SoCal Water$mart rebate program--with California natives that offer inherently indigenous landscaping aesthetics, perfectly adapted to this local climate. Indeed Plant Material is stocked with plants that invite you to a deeper relationship with this land's unique history and seasons. If you have peeked under the veil of the U.S.' cultural ideology of white manifest destiny and its attendant ecocides and genocides, and seek to cultivate a more honest relationship to the history of this land as it shows up today, Plant Material is for you. The people who sit behind the counter are knowledgeable about the quirks and characteristics of the native plants. They'll tell you what will work for your shade conditions, how big a mature plant will grow, and which species would complement an exisiting palate of plants (to avoid overwatering/underwatering adjacent species, for example). Their Web site has an updated selection of plants, so if you're looking for certain species, check online first to ensure they have them in stock, otherwise you'll likely need to go to their other branches (e.g. Silver Lake) I include some pictures of the desert mallow and coastal goldenbush I procured at Plant Material, which fared extremely well through a historic prolonged triple digit heatwave--the likes of which have never been experienced before in northeast LA. There is also a retail store on the inside with cute locally made things and some things are from recycled material which is awesome (like their sweaters). I truly can't say enough good things about Plant Material. This was a great place for me to find some native plants a year ago, and they were so helpful when I described what I was looking for. From there, they were responsive when I asked questions via email. Now that I am moving, I emailed them asking about what to do with the plants instead of throwing them out and they offered to donate them to a local school. Best new find in a long time! Beautiful, bushy, clean, pesticide-free California native milkweed for monarch caterpillars. Saved my 3 after I ran out of food & another nursery lied and sold me milkweed that was treated with pesticides. Owner is very knowledgeable, friendly, kind, and stayed late to sell me plants so my little caterpillars could thrive. If you're considering planting a butterfly garden, get your plants here! The nursery itself is like an oasis. I'd say 99% of all my plants are from here . They have an amazing selection of natives that are reasonably priced and healthy. Every plant I've purchase has thrived , whether it be native or indoor . The owners are kind , unpretentious and welcoming people . They always try to help you . During these challenging times , they still find time to help those in need/ community with donations / food drives etc. This is my place not only because it's in my neighborhood nursery and they have an amazing selection of natives but because I feel appreciated as a customer . During this pandemic I've had long behind the screen hours and it's been so convenient to place an order on their pick up option online and my husband swings by after work . With traffic he's not always on time before they close and they always call me and wait or even once dropped it off at my home. I love this shop! I'm a garden whisperer that helps folks with transforming their yards into beautiful gardens. A client of mine told me about Plant Material while we were shopping for native plants and other drought-resistant plants that we could put in her hillside yard. We eyed these crazy Dr. Suess looking proteas, which I loved, but the client didn't. I managed to convince her to buy this absolutely stunning plant. We then put it in the ground and the client was so happy. In a couple of weeks the protea was blooming and thriving. And the client ended up LOVING the new plant. Fast forward to last Friday, when I got paid from the garden whispering job. The first place I wanted to go was Plant Material, and get me one of those giant proteas. I walk up, and began to explain what I wanted. The owner was so intuitive, and actually remembered me. He said to me, "Tango plant, yes?" I was duly impressed. He showed me to the plants he had, and ALL of them were gorgeous and healthy, so I snagged the prized protea, and also grabbed a beautiful maidenhair fern, and a thriving salvia apiana aka white sage. I would have bought more, but was worried about my budget. Did I tell you how much I love this shop? Oh yeah, the protea in question? It's called Leucospermum Tango. It's a crazy giant orange flower native to South Africa. It loves crappy, sandy soil and heat. Just like SoCal! I bought some potted plants here a couple weeks ago and watered them daily but they soon withered. Took them back, hoping to get an exchange or refund but Plant Material doesn't allow either. Wish they had mentioned that their plants won't survive in pots after you leave the store. At least Home Depot offers refunds for failing plants. I've supported this small business for some time but am very disappointed their business practices aren't customer friendly. read more
