Might be jaded after having spent a week at the downtown Marriott and the convention center, but this place feels like a gem of a third place, and a nice respite before heading to the airport. Eclectic decor in the older building with exposed brick walls and a fair amount of plants up front. It's a large space with a variety of seating options - maybe 4 or 5 two-tops along the windows in the front, a few large booths that could sit six each if you're cozy, 3 or 4 nooks with a mix of couches and stereotypical coffee shop seating, a larger table in the back, and some bar seating as well. The traditional coffeeshop style seating is a nice touch, and feels like a throwback to a different era, when coffee shops weren't just a ton of people on laptops. That being said, they're clearly trying to draw in remote workers and their ilk, with plentiful outlets (i.e. four outlets at the booth I sat at and I can see 4 under counter outlets for every 2 or 3 bar stools. They've also got signage at the tables encouraging sharing the larger spaces/inviting others to sit with you. Was probably a little quieter than normal since it was Memorial Day, so the sign to share the space didn't come in to play, but I appreciate the vibe and community they're trying to create. Decaf americano was fine, but it was in a paper cup which felt like a bit of a miss. They didn't ask if I wanted it for here or not, but I do see some mugs on top of the large Rancilio espresso machine (so the purists may balk it's not a La Marzocco). read more

Absolutely loved this coffee shop. So many cute shops around it, so it's in a great location. I love the comfy maximalist decor, with a sprinkling of antiques. The lady running the counter was very well versed in their drinks and what could be made decaf. The chai can't be made decaf, but they did have decaf espresso so I was satisfied there. As a KC local, I love trying the variety of local coffee shops our city has to offer! I finally got a chance to try Thou Mayest and they did not disappoint. With a variety of flavors (both standard and unique) there is truly something for everyone. I tried an elderberry latte and enjoyed it. I haven't seen elderberry syrup offered at other shops and it was super fun to try something new and different. Despite the number of coffee places Yelp says I've reviewed I want to stress how much of a coffee drinker. However, after having spent a fairly small amount of hours eating an alarming amount of BBQ (and ice cream) I just needed a place to sit and digest without eating. My local friend mentioned Thou Mayest as an opportunity to sit for a bit without having to eat. I was looking at their non-coffee options and saw they had a local kombucha on tap, perfect to help with my overstuffed belly. On top of that I did buy a bag of beans; just because I don't drink coffee meant that I didn't have people that enjoy it. More importantly, the kombucha was pretty good and it was nice to sit and relax a little in a pretty cool space. I love this Thou Mayrest coffee shop because as soon as you enter, you get a wooden cabin or cabin in the woods type of décor, which is very soothing to be around. As soon as you walk in, there's a sitting area on both the left and right sides, followed by the alcoholic and coffee bar area. Apart from the tables, the other seating areas are each designed a little differently from cozy cabin-style corners to bench-and-table setups and I've sat in both and loved them. They don't have an extensive coffee and tea collection, and it's pretty similar to other coffee shops, but the one I really love is the whiskey barrel cold brew. Apart from that, I've also tried the London Fog tea and café lattes. The coffee tastes good, but the temperature at which they serve it is colder than I prefer, and they don't specifically ask about it. So here's a tip - make sure to tell them your temperature preference. Otherwise, their service is good and the staff was very kind and bubbly!! They have an extensive variety of coffee beans, and so far I've tried 'Wild Child' which is a mild to medium brew, mostly good as a mild Americano. I loved it and I'm looking forward to trying more of their coffee beans. Fun fact - the coffee shop is attached to a Betty Rae's ice cream location, and they even have a Thou Mayest coffee-flavored ice cream, which is delicious. For a funn experience, grab a slice of their amazing pizza at Il Lazzarone, then head over for coffee here and finish it off with ice cream at Betty Rae's - you'll love it! The biggest downfall for Thou Mayest is their success. As Yogi Berra famously said, "Nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded"; at least that's the way it is for me on the weekends. Each time that I have went in, there is always a line and if I do pull the trigger and wait, I always get it to go since the plentiful seating options are always occupied. I'm a big fan of the brand and love visiting their Cafe Equinox concepts, the shop at The Nelson Atkins and the old place on 18th St. I just wish I could visit this location and sit and enjoy the atmosphere. My Cortado on Sunday was the perfect pull of espresso. I did get a seat at an outdoor table on a chilly afternoon after enjoying the City Market and Art Garden and waited for the streetcar that stops 100 feet from their door to take me one stop south where there is free parking. I've seen enough. I'm ready to call it for Jackson County and the KC Metro as a whole, that the Thou Mayest brand is my favorite coffee brand and group of coffee shops in the entire city. Yes, that starts with the iconic River Quay location, spans to the Nelson Atkins, and Café Equinox inside Family Tree Nursery. -This River Quay has cozy, woodsy vibes. A streetcar clanging by outside, natural light pouring in, and ENERGY. -The Nelson location has a calming, modern museum vibe with some beautiful views of the museum, and a super friendly staff. -Cafe Equinox has a freaking greenhouse with birds flying in it to warm you up in the middle of winter, it's a dream for any warm weather lovers like myself. But back to this specific spot. When I think of this spot, I think of the natural light on the east side, the cozy comfy couches in the middle and the back, clean restrooms, the pups that are apparently allowed inside here (dogs make everything better!) the beautiful and gigantic coffee bar tying it all together, and boiled down to a few words: laid back. Beyond the cozy and inviting atmosphere, the coffee is my contender for the best cup of coffee in Kansas City. I'd put it up there with some of the upper echelon coffee cities in the U.S. It's that good. When you buy their beans and make them at home, they taste almost as good as at the shop. The only small issue is one I had at their old Crossroads location: spotty Wi-Fi. I didn't have the best luck in the short time I worked here, as it cut in and out often. The whole area around this is fun too. Also, props to them for taking over Quay which was one of the highest rated spots and keeping it rolling in a new way. Absolutely loved my visit to Thou Mayest! I got a vanilla/mocha latte, it was so good, honestly some of the best I've had anywhere. Anna made them perfectly, smooth, balanced, and full of flavor. The espresso itself was rich and delicious too. They even handed out free Halloween candy, which was such a fun, thoughtful touch! It's always packaged with fellow studious people. The only problem I have is that the whole place smells like a porta potty. I'm guessing it's due to old plumbing. If I'm on River market, is my go to coffee place. Not only are the staff fantastic the atmosphere is so cozy. I love all the mid-century modern furniture mixed in with the modern aesthetic. I had a special request of a smaller ratio of espresso to milk and the baristas were very accommodating. I enjoyed the background music and chatting at the bar. It is for a sure hipster atmosphere. However, this coffee aficionados dream is also cozy and home-like, and that is a good thing. When I dropped in on Saturday morning with my mother, while waiting for Tribe kitchen to open, we were very impressed by both of our drinks. She went with a seasonal and festive peppermint mocha, which was written on the specials board (and isn't served with whipped cream if you're wondering), and I decided upon one of their many caffeine free tea offerings. This one was spicy and very warm in flavor profile, I enjoyed it very much. I was a little thrown off by the quirkiness of this cafe during my first visit from out of town. Cigar bar meets coffeeshop? Ok! We ended up trying the signature latte featuring bee pollen, and we enjoyed it so much we've come back 3x (again...from out of town here)! Aug 2025 Latest update: I've been going here off and on for years. Unfortunately, I've decided not to come back until the rude blond woman who works here leaves. She was talking disrespectfully about customers right in front of me while I was in line to order on my last visit, and today when I visited I asked for a decaffeinated bottomless, and instead of just informing me that wasn't an option she was rude about it. No one else was in line at that time and she doesn't bave to be so curt . The entire reason I come here is to support local and avoid Starbucks, but customer service the last 4 times I've been here has been terrible. Happily trying other coffee places and will come back when they let her go and train their staff to interact with customers appropriately. Also, I ordered their kombucha lemonade the last time and it unfortunately was 14 ounces of ice cubes and probably less than 2 ounces of lemonade. It was not worth it at all for $5.50. If you look at my old review for back when this was Quay Coffee, I gave it five stars, it doesn't seem possible, but the other reviews are right and since they've reopened their doors as the new Thou Mayest location it's even better. While it certainly is still a bit pretentious, it makes up for it with an amazing warm atmosphere and friendly baristas. The vibe in here is perfect for a winter morning where snow is lightly falling and you want to sit down and get some work done while sipping on a well crafted cup of joe. I think what's better than the OG iteration of this space is that the last version felt a bit sterile and modern, where this one, while still feeling very "now" is much more elegant, and unique. You walk in feeling like it has its own identity which IMO can be a bit challenging in the often oversaturated coffee shop market. At any rate, I really enjoyed my visit here and this shop would make for a wonderful spot to work, take a break, go on a date, or enjoy breakfast. read more

Do I recommend this place? Well this was my first time here, and the coffee was pretty good. I enjoyed my mocha, which fortunately I requested that they make it half sweet. My husband, however, said that his hot chai was, "alright". Someone here recommended that I try the "pollinated lavender latte," which I will have to try next time. The next best part is that this place on a Saturday is opened until 11 PM, which is pretty cool. Too bad I can't get this in one of our many coffee shops in Lee's Summit. Oh well' Now for the minuses. The fact that this place is a bar and also a coffee shop contributes to the hectic busy atmosphere and noise level wherein the staff plus music pretty loud so that it's hard to hold a conversation here. Another fact is that speaking to others who come here frequently, they told me that they have actually waited here for long periods to actually get a table or a spot to sit with their laptop because others are doing the same and holding the spot they keep for a long time. I may find this place also neat to check out when it's warmer also because I felt a draft no matter where I was shopping, but I won't count on it because then it may be impossible to even find a spot. What a great coffee shop! Whether you want to get a cup to go, or sit and enjoy it in the cafe, the coffee and service are excellent! There is lots of seating, tables and booths, but also couches and chairs to enjoy a cup of coffee with friends. The coffee is always delicious and they have some sweet treats to try! They have way more than just your normal latte. They also are dog friendly so it's a great place to stop on a Saturday morning walk. We will be back to try some cocktails soon! read more
