This place is such a cute gem. The baristas are super cool and friendly, and get all orders right. During our last outing here, my husband and I came here for breakfast. I originally wanted to try their tamales, but saw they had chilaquiles, which is an authentic breakfast choice in Mexico, so I should know. The chilaquiles with two over easy eggs were so authentically close, which the avocado exception because chilaquiles don't have avocado slices, but this wasn't a deal breaker, and in fact added more tasty protein to the mix. I really enjoyed the chilaquiles breakfast here and so did my husband. What was even more special was that it went wonderfully well with their coffee here. So, to the top. Yes come here once and come back. It's a real coffee shop even if they do have a few food options available. Don't let that dissuade you. It's good coffee beans made into a good cup of coffee. They have a few sweet lattes to choose from but also have a solid set of standard espresso forward options as well. I'm looking at you cortado. IMO, a cortado is the way to go to try a new place and decide if you actually like their coffee. Now that's been said, it's a cute place as well, lively, colorful, and lots of plants. We went to Nelson Atkins art gallery and decided to try this coffee shop out that is not too far away. The service was good and friendly. My husband had a delicious raspberry black tea and added pomegranate syrup and then ordered the same tea but changed it to passion fruit and he said they were great. I had a brown sugar iced oat milk latte that was good and we first ordered 1 tamale and they were so good we ended up ordering 2 more. I've been going to a lot of different coffee shops, but so far, this one is my absolute favorite. Heads up, this is not quite a secret, so there can be a line. The coffee (iced caramel latte with oat milk) was smooth and delicious. The food...WOW. The first time I came in, I didn't realize they had food so I only got to order coffee. The next time, I ordered the special and it was absolutely amazing. There is an online ordering/order ahead option to not wait in line too. First timer here.. Ordered 20oz Iced Strawberry Matcha with coconut milk.. the drink was very good, just wish I had more of it to enjoy! The strawberry was purée so that made flavor and consistency bold. I wish I'd asked for light ice because again I feel like you don't get the full quantity of what you're served. Most every ingredient is already cold as it has to be so why so much ice I don't know. Plus as the ice melts it changes your drink flavor and consistency if your a slowly sipping. The barista who took my order was very friendly and patient. They also had story on ownership of the coffee shop on display which is nice to know as well. It's a nice local coffee shop with space downstairs and upstairs. Post comment: I've had drink with Matcha at plenty of other places like Cafe Caphe and Chambre and neither of them have this issue, nor do they think it's a customer problem to want less ice and more of a drink in a cup size being ordered. Staff was friendly, ordered a coffee and their steak breakfast burritos. Coffee was good but I do prefer a darker roast, the burrito was great but felt like it could have used an extra bit of salt to bring out the flavor and seasoning more and maybe cooking down the peppers a bit more or dicing them into smaller pieces. The red sauce it came with was super good though and had a little bit of heat. I went there to read a book, and I did find that there weren't a lot of good 'lounge' seating options that I could see. The upstairs had an outdoor lounge chair that was cushioned but still not super comfortable. This place might be better to go and get work done at a table rather than sit down with a book and read for a couple hours, I still am looking forward to coming back but I do think with that in mind it will affect my decision on when I go though. read more

This place is just absolutely phenomenal. You walk in and the staff are just so damn kind, the owners are always talking to my partner and I and they're really bring so much light into the community by being so friendly and providing an affordable quality meal. Anchor Island is a fairly quick bite coffee shop but their food is ridiculously good. I am frequently looking back into their kitchen to see who is making these incredible breakfasts. I generally get the burrito which is amazingly delicious and always tastes so fresh! But this time I went with the chilaquiles which calls to me because the enchilada sauce has such great depth of flavor without being over whelmingly spicy. The chefs are amazing here, and they deserve so much praise. This place is such a favorite of my partners and mine and I will be back asap! read more

This is a coffee shop for everyone -- LGBTQ-owned and very LGBTQ+ friendly. There is a small amount of seating on the first floor with more seating in an upstairs hang out / event space. Full of tropical decor & sunshine. Their breakfast burritos and chilaquiles are fantastically delicious! Most of the time, you don't expect a coffee cafe to have the most outstanding food, but I am obsessed with their Chori Papa burrito. They also have tasty bagel breakfast sandwiches, but the chorizo is where it's at. Order at the counter and they will either call out your name or bring your food/beverages to you, depending on how busy it is. Plenty of free street parking along Troost. I cannot get enough of Anchor Island. I love this local spot for anything they make and for being the most welcoming place. When my partner and I moved to the neighborhood, we hit up this spot... And now it has become an at least weekly haunt for us. The food is great, drinks are great, and food keeps me wanting to go back for more. I know everyone has their own ideas about coffee but I will say that I have loved my cold brew, regular coffees, and specialty lattes here. Recently had a few lemonades that really hit the spot (shout out to the hibiscus lemonade, summer '25), and I'm excited to try out a smoothie next trip. For food, we usually go for breakfast, and my partner and I definitely have our orders. Mine: the chillaquilles. Tortillas smothered in a homemade green sauce, with over easy eggs, sour cream, chopped chicken, and avocado. Honestly, I have to always get it because their green sauce is the perfect combination of spicy and savory--it always hits the spot! My partner always gets the chorizo egg burrito--so good, great size, and they put tortilla strips in the middle. The salsa they give alongside it is also FIRE. I already mentioned that everyone is so great there, and the vibe is chill--so you all better grab your favorite book, buy a coffee and a snack/meal, and enjoy the two floors of seating (including outdoors) at Anchor Island. I've been coming here weekly for a little over a year now, and I can honestly say it's become more than just a coffee stop -- it feels like a relationship. From the moment I walk in, the staff already know my order, greet me by name, and always say hello with a smile. That kind of personal touch is rare and makes every visit special. The environment is always spotless, the food is consistently delicious, and their selection of breakfast items and pastries is excellent. A huge plus for me is that they don't use any seed oils, which makes eating out feel a lot healthier and more intentional. My friend and I met at Anchor Island Coffee for breakfast this week; it was our first time visiting, and we had a lovely time! The ambience is very welcoming, with local art on the walls and nautical-themed graphics on the tables. Everyone behind the counter was extremely friendly and helpful as we navigated the menu, answering all our questions with a smile. They were genuinely interested in ensuring we had a great meal. And we did! I had the egg burrito breakfast, and my friend had the French toast, and everything was DELICIOUS! Very fresh flavors, artful seasoning, and creative plating (the way they cut the French toast evoked the shape of a heart). I had the house coffee (from Broadway Roasting Company), and my friend had the cappuccino, and our drinks were just as delicious as the food. I have driven by this place countless times, so I decided to finally try it. It has a cute island theme when you walk in and some fun music playing. I was greeted by a super friendly guy who helped me through the menu and gave recommendations as to what I should order. He also said that if I didn't like my drink I can tell them and get a different one free of charge. He told me it is company policy because he wants customers to be happy. I find that so refreshing that a business cares so much about their customers that they offer that. They also offer food but I didn't get any. From reviews and their Instagram, the food looks so good. This is a great neighborhood coffee shop and is super cute. I am glad I finally visit this cute coffee shop! The theme in the shop is anchor( of course lol) and ocean, for a person who was born on a island surrounded by oceans, I can totally resonate with the spirit this coffee shop try to build. It is a welcoming neighborhood kind of coffee as well. The staff was nice and friendly, and the owner ( I think, I saw him talking to a reporter-like person with a camera man outside of the door when I went in) could say goodbye and called my name when I was about to leave. It made me feel like I've been here thousands times. He could also chat with other customers who looks like living next to the shop as if they are old friends. The vibe is truly amazing. Food, is another amazing part of this coffee shop. Their coffee is more like Mexican or Asian inspired specialty coffee. They do have the regular "boring" ones, but I tried the horchata latte, according to the staff, they homemade the rice milk to add in this specialty drink. And I love the taste! Love this exotic flavor and the most important part is it's not overly sweetened! The breakfast burrito is great and taste fresh and healthy, not the usually greedy and overly seasoned type of burrito. Totally my type of food!!! In honor of National Coffee Day I chose a new spot to visit today. After reading fellow yelper Jen H's glowing review and the stores humble and inspiring background story, I knew Anchor Island would be perfect for a pit-stop on the way to the Nature Conservatory down the street. The island theme seems to be a vibe these days but this spot is the original instigator. Anchor has a cool little space with a wide food and drink menu although I only enjoyed a perfect iced mocha as a celebratory beverage of this most sacred American holiday. Along with a varied menu they offer fresh produce, indoor and patio seating, and lots of seaside art and décor. Service was welcoming and sincere. Anyone willing to invest and commit to the re-birth and re-branding of Troost Ave. deserves every bit of support from all of us. Anchor Island is going onto my short-list as one of my pre-work caffeine destinations. read more
