Rolling in on a weekend at dinner time is going to mean busy busy, and Schoolhouse delivered a nice experience and tasty food. I was alone this evening (what else is new) but still got the royal treatment and not a table in the closet. Drafts are good if you're not into the many mixed drinks those around were enjoying, and eyeing that Fresh Fig and Goats Cheese salad. Hey, they have olives, I'm happy. So as not to eat steak frites every single night (who's counting) I opted for the Spinach & Ricotta Ravioli. This was flavorful and nicely sized. Since the fries had no truffle, I went the healthy route with broccoli as a side. Dessert tonight was round-2 drink, and by the way their wine list is simple yet conclusive. Architecture-viewing and people-watching abound here, whether you're headed to or from an arena event, or just wandering in from the rain. I'll return next time I stay in Ballsbridge. read more

When we walked inside we were instantly in awe of the architecture. The rows of beams along the ceiling are absolutely gorgeous. I loved the little corner we were sat that had a "faux" fireplace and small child's school desk. We opted for a round of drinks on our way to the Aviva. My friend loves the pear martini she got. If there's ever been evidence that the recession's been good for something, it's surely the abundance meal deals around the city. Enter the Schoolhouse. Two courses for €22.50 or three courses for €24.50 and a free drink from the bar! They have an extensive menu to choose from (so you're not limited to 2-3 choices as is often the case with these types of offers), and it goes from 5pm to 10pm every evening - so it's not even an early bird offer. Pricing aside, the food was really quite delicious. I had; - Goats cheese tart with carmelised onions. Very good - the goat's cheese was a little sparse for my liking, but besides this, all good - Chicken with chorizo and potato gratin (soooo filling and soooo good) - Lemon meringue glass with biscuit pieces. Perfect combo of tart and sweet. You are then entitled to a free drink of your choice from the Schoolhouse bar afterwards, or, as we did, have your drink with your meal. The service was a little slow in some parts, but always super helpful and friendly (they even split the bill and took for everyone's total separately at the end which was no mean feat). I would say also that despite the room being stunning, it is perhaps lacking a little in atmosphere. Perhaps some good atmospheric lighting would help, or a change up in the music. These were two minor points however, so I really wouldn't dwell on them too much. I would highly recommend the Schoolhouse for a nice meal with the folks or perhaps a slightly more formal occasion. read more

School may be out for Summer, but the Schoolhouse Bar is still open, and offering some serious value for their customers. I went along here on Tuesday night with the Yelp foodie club, an informal and always fun gathering of some of the community with a real love of good food, and good food is what we got. Firstly though, the decor, it is a stunning setting, many of the original features are intact with high ceilings and dark wood throughout, and a well set out dining room with a mixture of table sizes which gave it a slightly raaggle-taggle feel that I adored. Now for the important bit - FOOD! I was really impressed with the menu, a great selection with some really interesting options, crab and Parmesan creme brule anyone? I got a mushroom risotto for my main, and my only complaint was the amount of leaves in it, one was certainly rocket, but there was another I could not identify. Unlike most places the leaves had been mixed through the dish and were not on top where one could remove them without having to turn the experience into one akin to an archaeological dig. It was very acceptable though. Desert was something else, a light but rich mouse which I would return for alone, it was divine. Not too sickly sweet and a very generous serving, I practically licked the glass! Service was also above average with a very nice young waitress going above and beyond when it came to paying the bill, spending quite a while with us splitting things out. And €24.95 for 3 courses includes a drink of your choice, win! I will say that wine here is very expensive for a normal (as opposed to speciality wine bar) pub. €7 for a pino, and it wasn't even a decent serving. This is technically my local. If you're after a wild party it's not for you, but if you want a nice beer, great food, and a comfy fireside couch, it fits the ticket. There's a more formal restaurant attached, or relaxed dining in the bar. The food has won awards. My stomach never complains. There are outside tables for smokers or nice days. The Guinness pint is very good, and the Erdinger is served in proper big flutes which will impress your mates. There is a big telly near the bar which gets switched on for important matches but if that's not your thing then there are plenty of nooks and crannies to escape the crowd. The staff are polished and the prices are probably a bit less than you would expect for this quality of food and drink in Dublin 4. Great place for a drink after work, a quiet catch up, or a family pub meal. read more

We had our first Guinness of our trip at the Schoolhouse Restaurant. The restaurant side was relatively quiet but we peaked our head into the bar side and it was very busy. They also allowed us to order off either the restaurant or bar menu since they share the same kitchen. I had the salmon off the restaurant menu while my husband ordered a stew off the bar menu. They brought out some delicious bread to start. The food and service were both very good. The true star of the restaurant is the architecture. It is stunning. The exposed beams, the arches, just everything. We were staying at the hotel and our room felt dated. It was obvious the restaurant construction was from the same period but instead of old, it felt elegant. 4 stars. read more

New to the area, this was a place firmly on my must try ASAP list! It's a great bar and restaurant, inside you have a really welcoming and cosy bar... Plenty of seating from tables, high tables and bar seating. They have a great bar food menu which is great value, of the food I've tried all have been really tasty and reasonably priced. First visit I had the fish and chips, yum... Second time was for brunch, opted for Eggs Benedict which came with proper cooked ham... Yum yum! My hubby had the beef pie which was so so so tasty and at like €14 or something was a big manly portion of food, again a great price point. The star attraction is the garden, plenty of seating and great tall garden heaters dashed about helping keep the Irish chill at bay... It's perfect place to unwind after a day in the office or lounge about after a perfect weekend brunch/lunch... It's a sun trap, one that is be happily stuck in all day :-) my only major issue is the service out in the garden, waiters are friendly but the service is slow, on both occasions, been seated 7-10mins before we get a menu or drink order taken and then if ye want a top up or anything ye might be waiting for awhile or else send the hubby to the bar like I've done ;-) Would happily come again, it's a great casual yet nice place to go experience and food, great bar menu plus friendly staff read more

I like the School House. I've only been there a few times at night which is nice to get started. A friend had a private party there once too up on the balcony which was quite cool, also served great party food. But the reason I go back again and again to the School House bar is for brunch. Usually during the winter when there's a match on or just after a good Friday/Saturday night out, I like to meet up with everyone again and have the post mortem of the night before, so we go here. I always have the School House breakfast (€11.50) which is expensive but filling. Toast included but you need to add on your tea/coffee and orange juice and pint of water :) They have lots of other options though and the burgers look delicious with their onion strings and chips. Tasty. I like it because I can bring my papers and have breakfast on the couch and chill out. (Please note: this is the bar menu, there's also a restaurant next door) read more

Love this pub! It's an actual school from the mid 1800s which has been converted in to a hotel and pub. And when I say converted I mean they kept it as true to form as you could! The pub/bar area actually has that school feel to it with a lot of the original layout and fittings. The Guinness is damn nice and the food is really nice too. Last time I was there I had the full Irish, just a simple full Irish nothing more nothing less and that's what made it nice. I also had food from the evening menu before. The portion sizes are really generous. The beef pie is seriously good. Plenty of meat and a lovely pastry top. My wife had the battered fish and chips, again great size fish and was cooked perfectly. On a nice day you can sit outside and enjoy the lovely sunshine. The outside area is adjacent to there nicely landscaped garden. My only gripe would be that the service can be a little slow but don't let that put you off trying it out. read more

Great ambience and was a favorable location when you are on the south side! But that's where the POSITIVES END! We arrived 45 minutes prior to closing and were welcomed and quickly sat. We were a group of 7 that entered planning on enjoying the cuisine, pints and spending many euros! Seated up stairs we waited a short time before realizing that our waiter had not returned. We moved downstairs where there was ample seating. Menus were laid out by the waiter and we were ready to indulge. We were approached by the manager and he then informed us that the kitchen was "probably" closing ......after a quick moment the waiter returned asking what we would want to order....more food was being brought from the kitchen which was making our mouths water, fantastic.....ohhh wait here comes the manager again.." I said the kitchen was closed"....END OF STORY and please feel free to judge for yourself....they certainly Gave off the appearance they are NOT FRIENDLY to tourists more than likely a good local spot. read more

Why that rating you ask ? First of all, I want to make sure what we are talking about. This rating is awarded to the restaurant part of the School House, as I have not experienced neither the bar nor the hotel. What happened ? It all started in October 2009 when a French delegation went over to the School House for lunch. To start with, the restaurant had lost the registration for the delegation. Then, the French parliamentarians had to wait more than an hour to have their meal. Finally, once they finally ate their food, everybody agreed to say it was pretty average. In the end, the manager was called over and got feedback for the lack of professionalism of his business. That was maybe a one time mistake, wasn't it ? I'm afraid it wasn't. I went for lunch early this year with business colleagues and ordered a fishcake. Once I got back to the office I started to feel sick. Later my colleagues told me they didn't feel too well themselves. Have you been there since ? Honestly I didn't want to but I was invited there for lunch today (11th June 2010) for business again. We ordered a ceasar salad which had no dressing. The water tasted terrible. My business partner couldn't eat one third of his plate. In the end, we didn't even dare to ask for desert and went for coffee to the Salt Cellar where people welcomed us with open arms. Anything else to say ? I think you pretty much got the point. I used to go here a lot more often, not really sure why I stopped going there in the first place, but after my experience last night I'm definitely going to think twice before suggesting that venue. Food: - mediocre at best, but better selection than you'll find at most pubs. this is mostly because there is an attached restaurant, but definitely not worth the price tag involved. - Don't get the burger, for the love of god. sounds like it would be tasty and juicy and with bacon and cheese, how could you go wrong... well you can, and it is. Drinks: - expensive. they had this promo for Budvar for 4.50, 4.50! and most pints are nearing the 5 euro mark. too much money in these hard times. I was pleasantly surprised when I met my friend here for a drink. The interior is very impressive and the beer selection is OK. They had a sign for the whiskey of the month which I guess highlights that that's the drink that they are aiming to push. I didn't eat there but most of the people were. We sat outside which was lovely, a very nice outdoor seating area. Service was OK. Professional in attitude yet very slow. I'd go back and try the food though. read more

Only sampled the pub grub, but it was so good I definitely will go back! Needed a quick meal so went for the fish and chips and boy was I surprised! One of the nicest fish and chip meals I have every had. Superb piece of fish, beautifully cooked, smashing flavour, lovely batter. Excellent chips, thin but cooked right through. Yes, you pay a little more, but it was really worth it! Looking forward to going back to try the main menu! read more

The schoolhouse is a classic lounge bar. There are comfortable couches, and the atmos is quiet and laid back. I'd imagine it would make for a great local. It's pretty expensive for a local though, charging as much as a temple bar despite being outside the canals. (i.e. not really in "town") If you're looking for a pub and the schoolhouse is near, then give it a gander, but I don't think it's worth going out of your way for a visit. read more

My husband and I were there to celebrate my birthday and it was a very pleasant dinner. We had fresh oysters and fish special with homemade gnocchi. We are big seafood lovers and we were absolutely satisfied with their food. A very friendly waitress, Gina, made it extra special for us by explaining the specials with details, giving recommendations and made sure that I get happy birthday song at the end(with a candle and the bill because the other waiter who served us dessert didn't know it was my birthday :)). Full disclosure: I live down the street from this pub. However, it's an excellent go to for a few drinks on the weekend (or during the week). But on the weekend, there's live music in the evenings. We've been twice for the music, and have been impressed: guy in guitar singing old favorites with a bit of spin on them. People were even up dancing to the likes covers of Neil Diamond and Tom Petty. The music is quiet enough so you can hear your friends talk, and there's usually plenty of seating. read more

This review is for the restaurant and not the bar; which I think is a wonderful place to go for a quiet drink. The one star here is purely for the beautiful setting the restaurant itself provided; huge high ceilings with great timber beams, a big open fire and candles everywhere. That is where the enjoyment ends I'm afraid. As it was a Sunday there were few people, I think one other table, booked in. Perhaps to make the atmosphere less jarring, they played music. This music was that of a seedy massage parlour where the person giving you a massage is either very angry at you or very angry at life in general. I felt like I should be smelling incense and being told that I was lying on a beach. The service was poor, slow (though I really don't understand how) and basically lazy. The starter, the crab creme brûlée, was cold, sloppy and salty beyond belief. My chicken main course was also fed a large tub of salt before reaching me. We skipped desert and made a speedy exit back to our room. Beyond disappointing; a good price but far from good value. read more

The restaurant serves really good food. 2 course for €22 with a free drink in the bar afterwards. I was there last night - a Tuesday and it was fairly busy which I was surprised at - shows others are a fan too. I had chicken stuffed with chorizo and on a bed of spinach. It was very tasty. And the moose, was delectable. This was all served in the bar so I was surprised they had some of the same food as the restaurant. Great choice on the menu, from nibbles of yummy chicken goujons to beef pie. The only thing I would criticize was the length of time to wait for the food but we were sitting in a bar catching up so it didn't really matter. They always have people staying in the hotel above so its nice to have chats with people from out of town. read more

So we dropped in here for a post wedding drinks session. I must say, the place was great. It was a very relaxed atmosphere, live music, open fires and an all round really homely place. We were ale to lounge on the couches, relax and just catch up after the hustle and bustle of the wedding. We also got some finger food platters, which were absolutely fantastic!
