Enjoyable meal with the team. Good variety of food and drink. Had the seafood pasta, which was jam packed with mussels, clams, shrimp and fish. My first pint of Guinness in Ireland was here. It was really good. We started out in O'Brien's Pub, down stairs. I'll be back for that experience, and another Guinness. This place is very easy walking distance from the Burlington Hotel. We ambled up the steps and had to weather a "do you have reservations" moment. They had a table right next to the kitchen. The atmosphere has a high-end pub feel. The service was stellar. I had the fish and chips. They were pretty good. The lack of malt vinegar was surprising. The fish as a little bland, and greasy, but not enough to knock off a star. The chips were chips. The mushy peas surprised me, I'd forgotten about that tradition. It was nice to have the real thing. My buddy got the steak. Man it looked good and and the place actually smelled like they do a brisk business in steaks and burgers. He loved it. He had a Howling Gale Ale (from Eight Degrees Brewing Company in County Cork) on recommendation from the waiter. He liked it. He's not a Guinness guy. In the end, I think this is a great place. One of my favourite discoveries in Dublin to date. Had to choose 3 starters as we simply couldn't decide on 2. Wings were among the best either I or my girlfriend have ever had! Braised Lamb Shepard's Pie is a very special dish and our steak was cooked to perfection! If you're ordering the steak, I highly recommend the house made pepper sauce. We had the baked cheesecake and ginger pudding for dessert, both of which were amazing! For wine drinkers, I recommend asking Damien for a recommendation as the wine we received of his choosing was the perfect accompaniment to what we ate. Found The Sussex on Yelp-and as it was walking distance to our hotel, stopped in for dinner with my mother. Fabulous dinner, service and atmosphere! I needed a break from traditional Irish fare, and I found the most delicious respite in their Superfood salad with grilled chicken. And my Mom's Seafood Linguine was full of fresh mussels, clams, and prawns in a subtly spicy, garlicky broth. Service was friendly and efficient, and restaurant space manages to be both comfortable and sophisticated at the same time. Both felt authentic. If I lived closer, I'd be a regular. read more

I've always been a fan of O'Briens on Lesson Street so was excited to hear about the new restaurant opening above it. It's a really handy start to an evening. A quick drink in O'Briens then just a short trip up the stairs to the Sussex. It's one of those restaurants where you feel immediately welcome. I think this is down to a few things - you are greeted by super friendly staff when you arrive up and as you're seated you pass the open kitchen with loads of smiling chefs, (I'm sure they're not standing there all night smiling as the restaurant got pretty busy pretty quickly.) and the interior is rich wood, cosy and warm. Keith was our server and he managed to put up with a large group women battling for airtime - so fair play to Keith. The food is really tasty. Its hearty Irish food - bit of Gastropub feel. The smokies are great and they've a really nice fish plate. The brown bread disappeared very quickly. We'd to remind ourselves to save space for the main course. I spotted a few tables bringing up a pint of Guinness to enjoy with the Seafood Chowder. Must remember to pop back some lunch time to try that. On the main courses - the steak was really good and everyone was raving about the fish pie. We'd a pretty big table so went for the house red and white. I can't remember the names but very easy to drink. Always a good sign if you can trust the house. All in all good value for money and great atmosphere. I don't think we left the restaurant till 1.30am. Reckon we will book for Christmas night out. read more

Overall amazing experience, the staff was great, everyone was coming over asking for our order, once we told them that we do not want to rush they apologized and allowed us not to rush. I love the open kitchen and watching the chefs in action. We were seated right across the open kitchen so we were able to see how our meal was prepared. They also have an excellent variety of red wines that do not break the budget. Loved the brown bread, fresh free range chicken wings that tasted amazing along with the seasoning and the chowder that was creamy and delicious. For main course we had Shepard's pie and lamb steak with the bone in, a very different cut for lamb that I have never had. The lamb was cooked perfectly, it is better to get it medium rare since it is a thinner type cut of meat. If you are visiting Dublin, I am definitely recommending this place, it is pub food but with a modern flare, absolutely amazing. read more

With working on Leeson street, this is one of the only nice places for lunch around. Everything I eat there really hits the spot. Today I had soup of celeriac, parsnip, spinach and blue cheese, accompanied by gorgeous homemade brown bread. I ask for more bread and they didn't charge me. For €5 - this is great value. Other nice lunch time treats were steak sandwich with the beef nice and tender, a chorizo linguini pasta, shepherd's pie, burger, goats cheese salad. All really lovely and the chips are scumdidlyumptious. I have never had a bad experience here, all the times I was there and today we were even offered coffee on the house, but we had said no before our brains registered it was for free doh!. They have daily specials for €10 such as bangers and mash, pasta or sometimes a chicken dish, so you don't have to break the bank if you don't need too. Considering mac donalds is nearly €8 these days, I think this place may score that bit better for some unknown reason. So a great place all round. I will miss it when we move over to Harcourt street, so I hope we can find somewhere else as nice. Keep up the good service and lovely food. read more

The food is good but a bit on the pricey side. There is an early bird menu but you only save like 1 or 2 euros if you go for it as opposed to choosing from the a la carte menu.. Which I found a bit of a pity.. So I had the 8oz Striploin Steak and peanut butter chocolate brownie icecream for 29 € as part of the early bird... Which could be cheaper, right? Steak and ice cream was good.. But not extraordinary. Service was a bit slow as well and whenever they came to your desk they were in such a rush that it just made you feel a bit uncomfortable. Considering what you get for the price I wouldn't come back. Although I want to point out that there was nothing wrong with the food :) The restaurant was not full at all so I don't think reservations are generally necessary here - but they do take them. I'd give it a 3.5 but since I can't give half stars I will go for the lower mark .. Since everyone else seems to reward the restaurant with top marks anyway :) read more

As an American in Europe, it's never an easy task finding a place that serves good steak but this place definitely gets it right! I mean, c'mon how do I order anything else when I see that on the menu? So this is basically your high end restaurant - you walk in and head up the stairs (don't get confused by the pub, I think that's actually an entirely separate place). Stopped in on a rainy, cool night for some wonderful Irish cuisine. Had the curry and sweet potato soup, which was well balanced and had a deliciously refined taste. Moved onto the shepherds pie dinner plate, which was served with a nice side salad. Finished off this culinary journey with their homemade ice cream trio. Hidden away above a pub across the Grand Canal this gem has a small local menu of traditional Irish specialties and steaks. Smoked haddies, Caesar with pancetta and the kale salad with beets excellent starters. Must try the special cocktails made by Robert the restaurants GM who hails from Budapest. The winners include a gin lemon cucumber concoction that tastes almost healthy despite the load of Hendricks. The Jameson's fresh apple and ginger was amazing even if your not a whisky fan. Best dinners were roasted chicken was herb jus, lamb Shepard pie and what had to be four dozen mussel with bacon garlic herbs and Irish cream served with brown bread! We came to the restaurant for an early dinner, and they had plenty of space for us. The entrance was a bit hard to find with the bar below and multiple rooms, but we found the stairs after being directed by a bartender. We started with cured salmon, which was definitely different and good. For our main course, we had the shepherd's pie and the chorizo burger, both of which were very good. I was surprised by the burger that it had a layer of some type of cured meat, which maybe was the chorizo, but was really good in any case. So this was my first time in Ireland and the Sussex was my first dinning experience In the Emerald Isle. I went to dinner with a rather large group of people. I was handed a pre-fix menu and their standard menu. I opted for the pre-fix. Why, you may ask? Well, let me ask you... What would be your first meal, for your first time visiting Ireland? Mine, Shepard's Pie and a Guinness. I gotta say, I'm not a huge fan of Shepard's Pie, but I do rather enjoy lamb. The portion they served was generous and very well prepared. The only thing I would change is to have larger chunks of the lamb meat instead of a more shredded meat that was served up. Otherwise, an excellent dish and I would recommend to any one if they are visiting and want a nice hearty meal. Then a Guinness to wash it all down... Spot on! read more
