The employees at this Plato's closet not only already get first dibs for themselves, but they purposely hide/put aside stuff for their friends & family as well; I stood outside in line for their athletic event, and as soon as the door opened, the employee that opened the door pointed in the direction to a rack of **highly wanted and advertised** items, and urged her (friend, sister, whoever) over there.. she then grabbed the whole rack of items. I get first come first serve, and i understand employee perks, but this just seems shady, beats the point of the business and really turned me off. Haven't been back since. The clothes I wanted to sell were given away and I was sent home with nothing but an insincere "sorry" from the girl at the register. As a college student just barely scraping by every dollar makes a difference, so this really upset me. I had very nice designer shorts and two nice jackets which were gifted to me and well kept. They were worth a decent amount of money. When I came back to the store today I was told the clothes were donated because I didn't come get them the same day I had dropped them off. No one in the store told me my clothes would be donated. The least they could do is mention it once. They could have told me while I was in the store dropping the clothes off, or when they called me just a few hours before they closed they could have mentioned my clothes may be donated the next day if I didn't come pick them up. To make matters worse the store manager (I assume since she was the women to whom everyone turned for help) was adamant that her staff told me the clothes would be donated. She showed no empathy or really any interest in the situation. When I dropped the clothes off the staff barely had a moment to point me in the right direction to sell my clothes. They told me to fill out two pieces of paper and said it could take them up to 45 min to be done with my clothes. I went home and when they called and told me that my clothes were ready, I said "ok thanks!" I was met with a quick "you're welcome" and a click with the call ending. I know for a fact they didn't mention I need to come back before the end of the day because I started to ask what time they close so that I could determine whether I should get the close that day or the next. When I explained this to the store manager she didn't respond or even lift her head up to make eye contact with me. She just went about her work without acknowledging I had said anything. I'm extremely upset about this. Had I known this is how Plato's closet did business I would have donated the clothes myself. read more

I was so impressed with this store and the new management it is being ran under! All of the girls were extremely friendly and helpful, especially Harmony who helped us out today! I had a great experience selling items, they took a lot of my items and bought them for a good price! I was also impressed at the variety of sizes available in the store and how much more inclusive it is. I had a bad experience here a few years ago so I was skeptical to return but I'm so glad I did especially knowing now the store is being ran by friendlier people! Small location. Smells funky. Ive taken clothes up here quite a few times. They only accept brand new clothes.. Why anyone would buy new clothes then turn around and sell them for way less than they are worth is beyond me.. Id rather sell my new garment for 80-90% of what I paid not 30% store credit.... They didn't accept many of my things. Also they only cater to a certain group of people. They only have certain bands and sizes. So if you aren't size XS-L go somewhere else because they wont have anything for you. & if you are looking to be different forget it. Ive only found ONE pair of alternative pants here. I have a Love hate relationship with this store. I love it because it helped me start my fashion journey with opportunity to find some really cool pieces on a budget. I hate it because it was by far my least favorite job experience. I still go back every now and then but definitely not as much now that I know what goes on behind the scenes. Ethicality: Yes I totally reccomend shopping for some discounted items there.. but know it's not all ethical shopping. I loved that you could find some trendier peices to add to your closet without further contributing to fast fashion damage, and I loved their message of sustainability the until I learned that they buy from fast fashion brands frequently to refresh stock in jewelry, socks, and other things of that nature(usually on the end caps). Safe to say if it's in bulk it's probably not as sustainable as you think. While I do realize this is done to draw more customers with flashy new products it's not any better than going on fast fashion sites yourself and buying exactly what you want to begin with. Not to mention they buy multipacks and expect a profit of almost double what they bought the multi pack for per item In the multi pack sold separately. Atp stop supporting the cycle of them robbing you with an already unethical product and just buy it straight from the source(but if you can find something like it that's more sustainable obv go for it:)) Clearance items: If things are on clearance 1 of 3 things is accurate: its damaged( if you notice damage on a product not already marked clearance you can ask for a discount) it's been sitting in the store for a long time and clearly not selling, so it's a last ditch effort to sell it Trying to make room for new stock. So its possible to find some good things in clearance if you look but not likely. Selling: no comment. Work environment: This is the worst and most problematic job I've ever had... and I've worked multiple less than perfect jobs, so that's saying something. I'm surprised I stayed as long as I did. The 30% discount is not worth it. I decided to apply because over the pandemic I grew to love fashion and platos became my favorite store for some trendier finds. I was genuinely excited to work there because everyone always seemed so nice and super fashionable. It looked like the perfect summer job for someone who loved shopping.I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE WRONG. After about 2 weeks i started to hate it. Not only were my co-workers extremely rude but very cliquey and arrogant. Ofc everyone has a bit of a customer service voice but this was unreal.I was told that my coworkers had all told my supervisor at some point that they really enjoyed working and talking with me. Unfortunately I can't say the same. Training wasn't linear nor consistant in instruction, and the penalties were completely traumatizing and uncalled for. At one point it was mandatory for supervisors to write someone up every week. And ofc since I was the newest and the least trained I was almost always the one to get written up. Not for anything serious of course.. no I was written up for hanging something the wrong way on the employee rack.. not like it could've been fixed easily without a write up. Once I was reprimanded in front of a customer by my supervisor from THE OTHER SIDE of the store FOR HELPING A CUSTOMER FIND AN ITEM. This sort of thing happened frequently and gave me extreme anxiety at work. As a result of this when employee reviews came around they proceeded to say "wow you have quite a few write up slips". I had written up my letter of resignation the week before and happily handed it over in that moment. There are so many more things but in summary you couldn't pay me enough to work another shift there. I should've written this review when I first quit but I'm pretty sure it's still the same stuff. In the end no matter what job it is remember to be kind to the employees, most of us are just teenagers trying to get through a shift. You never know what someone else's situation is so just make it easy. Be polite and I guarantee you'll have a much better chance of getting good service. Thank you for reading through this. I came into this plato's closet trying to sell some (what I could imagine them selling) clothes because i just needed to get a little more money together for my rent, and man what a joke. They bought 2 items from a big bag for $5 and it felt like a pity sell. On top of that, I am plus sized which I know, but the lady at the register had the nerve to tell me that, "We are looking for some more plus sized clothing and your clothes is perfect for that." Wow. I used to go to Plato's and get even at least $20 for my items and now it seems so stingy and prissy. And I used to think, hey it's something over nothing, but I really don't want to give them my business anymore. I will just donate my nice clothes for someone to actually appreciate. read more

Love this store, the staff is super friendly and they helped me sell my clothes here. They give a detailed explanation which helps you understand what clothes they are taking and why, which is very helpful because I have a lot of cute clothes but some of them are 3-4 years old which makes sense why they have to take more current brands and trends. The staff was super nice about it and I did make some money and also I bought a makeup palette and some olive green Fila shoes, they are so cute and I got them for such a good deal! I'm in the process of unloading a bunch of my stuff, namely most of my clothing, for quick cash and this Plato's Closet was happy to take practically a whole rolling suitcase of stuff off my hands for me. I realized early on in my selling my stuff venture that my wearables, as fashionable as I might thinkI am, are not worth much in the Bay area. They aren't super weather appropriate for the non-existent winter weather here and the general style of the region is a little too fashion forward for my old ish BUT I knew I was taking a trip to the Detroit area and flying the very budget-friendly Southwest Airlines on old points that allows for two large bags to be checked for free, so I loaded up what was left of my closet and headed back to the Midwest to see what kind of life the reselling of clothing could lead me to. Luckily, I arrived with my massive bag o clothing just before the rush, because you have to wait in the store the entire time from drop off to the time your stuff is up in the queue to be looked over. When I left the wait time was close to 2 hours, but I think I only waited maybe 10 minutes. I also think it was probably my fault and the abundance of stuff I brought that led to that heightened wait time for everyone else. Like pretty much every reviewer mentions, it smells a bit gnarly in here. There's def a funk about the store that'll hit you as soon as you walk in, but I wasn't there to buy, only sell, so it didn't bother me at all. If anything, I think it upped the chances of my stuff being bought since everything I brought in was clean and in pretty pristine condition. The girls working here were friendly and while you may not receive top dollar for your stuff given the Detroit area's economic standing, I got a pretty penny for most of my things and was excited to just be rid of the items. My only regret was not bringing shoes in because I have so many worn only a few times shoes from back in the day that would have been top tier items here judging form the selection, but I didn't know they took shoes. lessons for next time. I honestly kind of think it was worth the flight from California (and/or drive up from Chicago) to come to this location and sell if you have stuff that's moderately new, as they weren't as picky as other locations. read more

As soon as you walk in the door, you're hit with an overwhelmingly disgusting odor. Ick! They way overcharge for guy's clothes, especially shoes, which all appear to be worn out. Seriously, the Salvation Army store has shoes in better condition. They also really pay almost nothing for your guys used stuff, even if it is clean, in good shape, season-appropriate, and from good stores/brands. When they offer you almost nothing for a good pair of jeans, and then sell them for tons more, they are the only end of this business transaction that is benefitting. It's a much better idea to donate to Purple Heart and use the tax write-off than have this over-rated thrift store rip you off. read more

I LOVE Plato's closet. I literally only buy jeans from here, because it is impossible for me to find jeans that fit. At Plato's I can try on brand after brand of jeans until I find some that fit, and when I do, I buy them for a good 25% of the price I would pay at the mall! They carry every major brand of clothing, and they're all in like-new condition. The only problem with that is that it is nearly impossible to sell anything. They turn down brand new, name brand clothing if it has the old brand label or is an inch shorter than what is "in" right now. They are so meticulous on so many random, unimportant features that they rarely buy anything I have ever brought in, regardless of how good of condition it's in or what brand it is. Overall, great place to shop, but only worth attempting to sell if you have a ton to sell at once. Also, you're not allowed to leave the store while they go through your things, so if it's busy you can be stuck there for an hour or so. read more

Do not use this location! I've happily used Platos Closet to sell clothing, however, this location intentionally deceives customers. I called the police after they ripped me off, please feel free to message me for the complaint number. As it turns out my complaint with the police isn't the first this location has gotten. They have a pattern of intentional deceiving the people who walk in the door. My experience was that, that i tried to leave my resells at the door and that had to stay in the building, however, this isn't the case AND they tried to sell me back someone else's belongings trying to say they were mine. They were quick to "cash me out" when they weren't finished looking through my items. They shoved a very small amount my way and told to leave when I had not been checked out, had not pestered anyone in the staff and was astonished when, "a boss" was only accessible via phone and unavailable for customers to reach. I specifically asked to speak with the manager/owner and was told no. This location has an unscrupulous staff and "manager" I wouldn't trust this location or any other nearby as they're franchise locations. They (this location) has previous reports of poor staff conduct (per local police) and does not want to change its behavior as the staff was intent on being correct. If you want to get ripped off use this location, if you'd like to use this service as its used the same was in several other cities, please find another location. Such poor attitudes, didn't take any of the gently used clothes I had, they were in perfect condition. Clerk said it's because they were a style they already carried. I walked around and looked at everything in the store because of the wait, and none of which I brought in were on their racks. It's funny because I don't really get much back from my clothes but if you have jewelry, like the kind you can buy from forever 21, you can get a good return back. The staff is friendly, I drop my things off and come back a little later for an offer. First of all, I've been coming to this location for while because it's closed to me than the Novi location. I never really had that many problems with the Canton store except for I feel like the employees who work there don't really put in any effort to help shopping customers. I go here to get cheaper clothes I'll wear for work, etc. I just have problems with the fact that when I was there last time a couple days ago before writing this, the girls working were just plain rude. They didn't at all walk the floor of the store to even help guests shopping or cleaning up messes around, and they were gossiping and laughing real loudly in front of all the shoppers. They were all standing around literally doing nothing but waiting for someone to go up to the cashier, where they were standing. I witnessed a girl asking at one point to one of the employees for help with the fitting room and the girl had a lot in her hand. All the employee said "oh it's open go ahead" without making any effort to help the guest at all! At one point one of the employees was following me for a few minutes in the area I was in picking up dropped clothing items but didn't really make an effort at all to help me or talk to me at all. When I was cashing out, all the employees were standing around the cashier table talking and complaining about their hours and job. This whole experience here was just very disappointing. If you want to come here to make a quick buck, literally like a few dollars because they don't look through the clothing you give them very well, I suggest Plato's. The store wasn't that clean at all, either. I would of given this store 2 stars for "trying" to give it the benefit of the doubt plus making a quicker dollar or two, but I probably won't be going to this store for awhile and this location I won't be going back ever. I used to go to Plato's all the time when I was in high school a number of years ago and was never super impressed. Now, every time I go in now everyone is super friendly (I'm pretty confident they got new owners and made some changes lol). I'm always greeted at the door and someone always comes up to me to make sure I'm finding everything ok. I'm always so impressed by the types and styles of clothing they have there, and for pretty great prices too. I'm pretty cheap so the concept of getting high-quality, sometimes even brand new American Eagle denim for like $20-ish is amazing to me. I've sold there a few times and while they don't always take my stuff, they have always given me a super detailed explanation of why and it makes sense. They have a donating option which is super cool too so I don't have to haul everything back out to my car if there's stuff they didn't buy. Would definitely recommend it! read more

The clothes are very young, and typically not good quality. It's the same stuff you can buy at Kohl's, just cheaper. Which is why I like it. I get nearly all my jeans from here, and any super trendy item I rarely want I can find it here as well. An above average selection of shoes and super cheap shirts. Jewelry selection is small. There is also a portion of the store for men as well, and though I don't use it, it is rare to see in resale shops and is probably appreciated by the other gender. Staff is a hit or miss, can be snobby, can be nice. Music is stuff from the popular stations. A lot of Katy Perry. If it is crowded, you might need to wait for a dressing room. I hardly ever sell anything here, but when I did the prices seemed fair. Good store, I hope they don't disappear like the Payless in that same strip did! read more

I have been to that location multiple times and every time their costumer service had been bad, but today it was just atrocious. The employees were condescending, rude and inconsiderate. I know this is not a company problem because the Novi location is wonderful and the costumer service is amazing. I use this place a lot with my kids. Great prices and they pay well for the clothes they buy from you. They do not take only new clothes. We have only traded in used clothes, that are name brands, and well cared for. A hint is to call ahead and ask what they need instead of guessing. This will increase your take rate. Also take a light iron to your stuff to make it look crisp again, like new. Great place with great bargains. read more

I am so over Plato's. I have taken very nice clothes and shoes in and they never take a thing. I believe it depends on whos looking through your things. It sucks to pack things up and carry them all in only for them to take nothing. When I go in to look around and shop, I never find anything nice. The clothes are all shrunken and smaller than what the size is. Also I agree with last reviewer, it smells really bad in there. read more

I love to shop at Plato's Closet because I can find name brand clothing for a cheap price! I love brands like Hurley, Volcom and DC shoes.. I always find something in there! They are very clean and well organized, I found Chuck Taylor's for only $10! Although I wouldn't sell to them because they give very little money for name brand clothing with tags still on them, they are perfect for anyone who's on a budget! They even have clothing for Guys.. The Girl's in there are very nice and they sell all styles not just trendy you just have to pick through.. I shop here everytime I have extra money! read more

I took in some garments to sell. The girl gave me a paper to fill out which included my address and told me I was all set and could go. Later I got a call that my sale was ready, but I was already home by then, and made plans to go the next week (this was Friday). I got a voicemail later threatening to donate my clothes if I didn't come back by the end of Friday. If the girl that waited on me would have explained this, it would be fine, but she did not. Lesson learned, Plato's closet it to be avoided because of their staff. I will never sell or shop there and will tell all of my friends to stay away. read more

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. I took in two baskets of clothes, mainly pants. After 5 minutes of briskly going through them I was given a rehearsed excuse as to why they wouldn't except ANY thing. All the pants were from the last 1-2 years, mainly from Old Navy and Target. What a huge waste of my time. Maybe it's worth a shot going to a different Plato's Closet, will never step foot in the Canton one again. Looks like I'm having a garage sale come spring! read more
