My teen enjoys visiting higher-end consignment shops for unique tees and designer brand jeans as a hobby (the thrill of the hunt) and asked to visit this location. A friend recommended this store, but it unfortunately did not meet my teen's standards. First, the selection is just poor in general. There were no designer brands at all that I could see which is typically what my kid hunts for. Best brand I found was one Banana Republic shirt with tags. I understand that these items are pre-owned, but everything seemed to be a bit overworn and washed out (or, even worse, not washed at all -- hence, the "old house" smell - IYKYK -- I almost turned around and left upon entering the store for this reason alone). Also, we had to track someone down to unlock a fitting room because everyone seemed seriously busy shuffling through clothing that had been dropped off by potential sellers. It seems like the Raleigh location may have a slightly better selection, but even that store didn't have any exclusive brands when I visited. If your teen isn't into higher-end brand names or unique items, you may be happy with the store, but it was not a good fit for my teen who is very selective when it comes to consignment items -- shopping consignment primarily for brands that are fairly on the expensive side when new. read more

Definitely cheaper than Uptown Cheapskate. Still a tad pricey at times, but most items here are a bargain compared to buying them new. This is especially true with shirts and shoes. Selling is not as pleasant as buying, though. I've brought clothes to this location several times, and have always had more items rejected than accepted. I know they're supposed to be picky, but I've had items rejected for "condition," despite seeing items for sale that I am amazed passed the inspection. read more

I get they are running a business and need to offer as little as they can but they absolutely lowball the crap out of me and daughter every single time we come in. $25 shirt and they offer $3! Knowing they are going to sell it for $15-20. Offered $6 for a pair of $60 jeans (I said no!) Today I brought in several, barely worn items and was offered $10 for 3 items. I wanted a pair of pants that were way overpriced and asked if they could do any better on the price and was told emphatically no. They do not negotiate at all. So they will negotiate with you but you are not allowed to negotiate with them at all. So the pants stayed and I left. I would honestly rather give my clothes away than take them here! I would rather them go to a shelter or someone else in need. I would also rather shop sales than spend money here. You risk lice, bed bugs, hand foot and mouth for what? A penny on the dollar is just not worth it. They should also offer a higher in-store credit value vs cash out the door. With that being said, I decided to bring a ton of clothes that were barely worn to sell. I figured it would be a good fit for them to expand their selection. I brought in 3 bags of all name brand clothing and got $60. There is absolutely no way the employees went through everything I brought in. They only took 10 items and declined American eagle jean shorts, several American Eagle sweaters, several name brand leggings and shirts. So ridiculous. All items were in perfect condition most having tags or only being worn once or twice. Update -- I was able to locate a phone number for the corporate office in order to place a complaint as to the 'theft' of a sweatshirt taken from one of the containers of clothing I entrusted to Plato's Closet - A call was returned - I was told that the owner of the Cary, NC business would 'make it right' as far as the sweatshirt that was 'stolen' from one of the containers taken into the store - I asked what that meant and was told "That is up to the owner" - I asked for the name of the owner and was told that was not available to me BUT that the owner would call -- Well that has not happened - I don't care about the sweatshirt but I DO care about THIEVING and SCAMMING and NEITHER are okay - What a HORRIBLE way to do business and a HORRIBLE business! read more

Buying experience: I got some really reasonably priced Athleta yoga pants & a nice Urban Outfitters sweater. I'm not a thrift shopper- and I definitely don't meet the demographic of teen/twenty something- but really appreciated finding the good deal on the Athleta pants, that I normally pay retail for. Selling experience: I offered to take some items to Plato's for my son's 20 something girlfriend. She is adorable and dresses super cute. A couple of the items still had Francescas tags on them. The store told me they wouldn't accept any of the items because they didn't look like a teen/20 something style. I really think they would have accepted the clothes if my son's GF had brought them in instead of me. Tip: Don't have your mom try to sell your clothes for you. To be fair though- I was astounded at how many people flowed into the store with bags & bags of clothes to sell! They have to shuffle through a lot of clothes! read more

( if you have never sold here before I will give you a small breakdown of the process. What you will do is sort through your freshly laundered clothes, then you will put them in a tote bag or a bin, then you will bring it into the store to the selling counter and they will ask you for your ID and to fill out a form, then they will tell you how long it will take for them to sort through your clothes, while they sort through your clothes you can look around the store or go run errands. When they sort through your clothes they look at the brand, they make sure the item is in good condition which means no stains or tears and depending on the item they will look at the date and also if the item is selling well for them in stores.) Tip 1: if you are planning to sell clothes I recommend getting there as soon as they open especially on the weekends. Usually there is a line at the door and there's so many people that they have to put the no more buys for today sign out. Tip 2: They usually buy what has been in the stores for the recent 1 to 2 years and very popular brands such as Nike, gym shark, Lululemon, Aritzia, boo-hoo, Athleta, princess Polly, Shein, pretty little thing, and the list goes on. Tip 3: brand new items with tags will most likely get you the most for your money and is more likely to sell. Sometimes they should have a card laying out telling you what styles they're taking and what brands they want the most! read more

I am not one to leave reviews but the service here was terrible. I entered the store at 6:40 pm to sell a small bag full of items. The cashier was very annoyed as she looked at the clock and said "It shouldn't be too much of a problem considering this is the only bag you have" and explains how they are experiencing staffing shortages. She tells me to come back before closing which is fine. I come back 30 min later and she tells me to give her 15 more minutes. In those 15 minutes not only does she explain that they can't take ANY of my items but it could have something to do with Inventory or the quality of my items. I never got a straight forward answer and her attitude was unnecessary. As I received my bag back I noticed all of my clothes were folded in the same order and the bag looked like it was never touched. I never got a receipt explaining who reviwed my bag which led me to believe no one did. I was extremely disappointed in my visit. Customer service is everything and treating your customers with disrespect has a larger impact than they think. I will never return here and will never recommend their location. I called in advance to see if they take luxury brands like Valentino, Jimmy Choo, Prada, etc. and they said yes. However, they don't offer a ball park price before seeing them, which I totally understand. After they assessed my stuff, they told me luxury brands don't sell well in their store, so they won't take it. But they would take Tory Burch's Riding Boots for $70. All the stuff I brought in was brand new, except 2 items (L.K. Bennett heels) wore like 5 times or less. It was such a waste of time because they could have easily said they don't accept luxury brands over phone. Additionally, things are pricy here. A regular hat with visor is $6-$8 when it's should be $1-$5 max. Overall, I don't highly recommend the store. read more

Decent place and I don't think it deserves to have such a low rating (just a 2/5?) on Yelp. It doesn't offer much for the college aged and above crowd like me, but I could see myself shopping here back in middle and high school. Seeing how it is a consignment shop, most of the stuff here won't be the latest fashions, but not everyone feels the pressure to keep up with fashion trends and this place could very well be their cup of tea. But for shopping to get basics, you really can't get cheaper than here. Don't expect to find many skinny jeans, however. For being a shop where people sell off their unwanted clothes, I have to say that the selection is huge and pretty good and if you spent enough time here, you're bound to find something you like. However, my only qualm is that the organization of the clothes is terrible. They are sorted by color (I never shop by color), and there are no clear markers indicating size, which is a definite no-no for clothing shops. The racks also tend to be packed, which gives me a headache when I realize how many clothes I would have to sort through to find something I want. They also offer you very little money for the clothes you sell to them, although it makes sense because otherwise they wouldn't be able to keep up their bargain prices. All of this into consideration, this is still definitely worth a stop for the mom shopping for clothes for her daughter/son, or the middle to high school age student. read more

What I like oh so much about Platos closet is that I can sell my worn or never worn clothes for something better than nothing. Although they give you only like $2 per item, it's something. They are picky about the brands they take, so don't go crazy shoveling through your closet to make a few bucks. I originally went to the one in Miami and they were decent. I brought it really good, higher quality items than they sell in the store, and was offered $6.50. I had to wait an hour and a half, just to get $6. What?!? Lol. You were compared to my true used and vintage clothing store love Buffalo Exchange, but you are not B.E's sister, rather you are the daughter of the black sheep sibling, but everyone likes you anyway, despite your parent of disrepute. Plato's Closet had A LOT of clothes - a few FEW good ones like the bright Michael Kors sheath dress for $12 or a Mad Men inspired Express floral skirt for $10 which I snapped up immediately. But most of the clothes were just normal, nothing spectacular or uniquely different - a great go to for cheap Cheap staples with the average price points being $8 or $16. I'm a bit older (GASP*) than P.C's target demographic as well, so P.C's is good for your 3R'd (Recyle, Reduce, Reuse - Close the Loop!) Hollister, Ambercrombie, American Eagle, and Charlotte Russe needs. BTW, great location near DSW and REI ! read more

I don't think I've seen a poorer work ethic anywhere. I would recommend going to a different location, they're much nicer and welcoming. There's also no sense of organization, they all had don't care attitudes and it shows. The reviews are true. I usually sell in platos closets in FL and have never had this experience. Waited an hour and a half for them to take literally nothing. I called them and asked if my items were ready and they said "they have been processed but we'll have to wait to have someone put them into the system so give it another 30 minutes." I'm sorry but it you knew you weren't taking anything then why would you have me wait another 30 minutes for me to come into the store and get snappy attitude from the girls working. Plato's Closet in Cary deserves a Zero rating but I'll give them a 1 because at least they smile to your face when you walk in. But if you walk around and just listen, they're so unbelievably snobbish, talking about other customers like they're in sixth grade, not like they're adults serving the public. If they deem you 'unworthy' in their eyes when you walk in the door, they don't even look at the stuff you're selling. They simply tell you, "We can't purchase anything today." Ultimate snobs. HOWEVER, Plato's Closet at Southpoint in Durham has THE nicest staff and usually buys almost everything that Plato's Closet in Cary turns down. And they will get a rating of 5 from me. I never feel 'not good enough' when I shop in their store. So, although I live in Cary, I no longer go to Plato's Closet here, but instead drive to Southpoint where customer service is something they understand and deliver. read more

For shopping it gets 3 stars, for selling your own clothes I give it 1 star, averaging to 2 stars. They have a pretty good and varied selection of clothing and sizes. It was just too disorganized for my taste. The shoes were just spread out throughout the store in no particular order. The prices are pretty decent, so that makes up for it a bit. I tried to sell some clothes but they were only offering me $1-$3 a piece. Since it was such small incentive I decided to donate it and have it go to a better cause than Plato's profit. read more

Plato's Closet is a magnet for today's preteen to 20-something Aeropostale-Hollister-Forever21 loving crowd. The racks are packed from end to end with casual, cool, trendy styles with plenty of second-hand accessories and gently-used shoes. This is not exactly my kind of shop (so, yes friends, a much older mom talking here), but my soon-to-be 13 year old daughter loved it, as well as the plethora of high school and college students shopping for back-to-school clothes. I was delighted to find some lovely shirts (for my daughter, of course) in the $5-$7 dollar range but how disappointing that jeans were more like $18-$20. Still a fair price, considering retail, but so many other lovely thrift stores offer unbelievable prices far below. Regardless, it was nice to have too much to choose from instead of scouring the store for something she might like. So, why 3 stars? Unfortunately, this store is incredibly dirty... as in layers of fluffy dust on the shoe platforms above the racks. The staff seem more interested in their social time behind the counter than actually providing service (although I do have to say there were one or two lovely young ladies that were working hard and were very polite.) And I just couldn't understand why pants were all hung at an angle instead of vertically - it was just hard to get a good perspective of what they actually look like and I left with a neck cramp. Def Leopard made me do it! Well, kinda. I was inspired by a rather unique first date invitation to go see Heart and Def Leopard. He started by saying... do you have a pair of jelly shoes and a hair crimper? Why no, but I knew a good place to get some killer vintage tees, big bangle bracelets, and tacky sunglasses! Platos Closet is a great place to go costume shopping if you are on a budget (and live near Cary). The place is a mess...expect to spend a lot of time in there and the check out process can be a bit slow. What you will not find is COSTUMES... what you will find is an assortment of random clothes that are often vintage and everything in between. Also, they have a huge selection of jeans. This platos is just ok. What makes me really upset is when I see the crap they have in there compared to the actual nice clothing I bring in they refuse to take. They are sooo picky and weird about the stuff they buy. One time I tried to sell some brand new jeans to them, but was denied because they had "stains". Meanwhile I saw about 6 items of clothing with holes, tears or stains. Alot of the clothing looks really outdated; kinda like a Forever 21 and Rue 21 had a baby lol. Also beware, they just discovered what Lululemon was, and decided to rack up the price. I'm sorry but $45 for an ugly color of a Lulu shirt is FAR to expensive for a discount clothing store.
