Ive went to two different ones and each time they tell me they cant take my items because they are too complicated to put together. Theyre looking for summer clothes. Everything i had was practically new with the tag still on and or wore one time only. I had plenty of summer shorts and dresses. All the items were very easy to put on. My friend also went in and yall told her the same thing. However every white person that came. They took all their items. So im just confused. This is the second time this has happened and I'm livid. I took two FULL bins to Plato's expecting at LEAST $10 considering I make sure it will be items they are looking for. I'm a young woman with similar tastes to what's in fashion and always keep my clothes in great condition, no pilling/rips/stains etc. I'm very thorough and familiar with the process. I go back after receiving a DONE text very shortly after we left. They took NOTHING. Gave bs reasons as to why, but I graciously took the bins to Salvation Army drop off just like I always do after. As I'm donating them I see that they are folded EXACTLY HOW I FOLDED THEM. UNTOUCHED. Meaning that these lazy little girls just glanced at the top layer and tossed it aside to save themselves some work. I've never had this issue with their sister store, Once Upon a Child, they are fantastic. But Plato's... this is utterly ridiculous, and makes me not want to even shop with you anymore. read more

As was once said in the great movie Walk Hard, "You don't want no part of this !@#$! This market would be much more active if the staff didn't pretend to be constantly busy in luxury world. God forbid that they have to clean the shoes themselves if you bring in some heat for their stoves. It's a decent service, the only game in town, but the building is at the top of a mountain overlooking Hartford in the ruin section of town, so I think there is so much thrill involved in working there that they get ahead of themselves and play the part of something that they're not, which kills the whole vibe. Some of the shoes I see in there though put me through a loop and make me wonder who also comes to this store and why. It is a big digital business but the grits and gravy of it all vs. what you get out of the experience are up in the air. Great place to start sneaker collecting, terrible place to have to resell on a VERY casual level, and if I were to "officially" level up to 2 star shoe reseller, I would call them out for some sort of preppy fashion prejudice on some set that doesn't exist. I would rank this store's value as poor to good people, and good to bad people, similar to calling the ying-yang a square. But they are now a competitor in this tiny market so I will remain diligent in basing my entire perspective of reality on moisture levels, minor staining, overall value, as well as overall vibe. You'll find your typical consignment clothes there more for the younger adult and teenage group but if you still fit in those pants and shirts, who knows what you'll find there. I usually come here when I want to find some softly used dress pants like an H&M brand that doesn't break my budget. You'll find everything sorted by color or type like a shorts or pants. I walked out with some decent dark green pants that lets me explore colors in my wardrobe without it being too much on my wallet in case I don't like what I purchased. I know there are times during the year that they remove seasonal clothes just like any other retail store so I would keep an eye out for those times to really take the savings. I haven't sold anything to them lately but I do know that they are pretty fair and quick with their assessments. If you are looking for some adventure in clothing this could be a nice stop for you. read more

Went in today with some men's stuff. Called first to verify they would possibly be interested in what I had. I arrived and was met with a bunch of odd (more like dirty) looks from staff. The associate who checked me in was less than friendly. 20 minutes later, I'm told that they passed on all but 3 items (I have no problem as to why), and could offer $8. I said, "I assume you took the jeans, right?" to which a different associate rudely said, "Yeah." I declined the offer, and the associate threw the items in my bin, turned her back, and with an attitude said, "Have a good day." I get out to my car and open the bin to see what was on top. It wasn't the jeans! It was warmup pants and a collared shirt (which I was told they don't buy collared shirts because they're too "casual/formal". I was at my car for less than a minute and went back in to explain the misunderstanding. I was given attitude and told that "the transaction had already been voided." If there were a consignment shop in the movie Mean Girls, this would be it. read more

I don't think I have ever gone in this store and had a good experience. The staff flat out sucks. They always have the worst attitudes and talk crap about customer and their clothes while people are in the store! I had three bags of clothes and they said they could only take two so they suggested I stuff everything into two bags... how does that make sense? I was also informed I couldn't bring my items in bags yet the website says it's acceptable. It's great getting money up front (us usually $6 for 10 pieces of clothing) but It's costing more in gas to go there than what it's worth. Second-hand designer clothes, though the brands vary quite a bit. The store is probably 70% women's/30% men's. I've bought a few things at Plato's when accompanying a female shopper, but it's hit or miss. The jeans are well sorted in terms of size, so you can (men especially) go through the appropriate rack reasonably quickly. Regardless of gender, don't show up unless you're in a good mood and willing to mill around for a while. It's nothing like shopping in any other store since there tends to be only one size of any given garment. (You'll commonly find something you love and it'll be the wrong size). TIPS: They have frequent customer cards that will save you cash in the long run. I don't have one, but have taken advantage of someone else's :) Along the lines of a "Spend $100 get 10% off your next purchase," though I have no recollection of what the ACTUAL value/payoffs are. Keep in mind things are second-hand. Make sure you check for stains, pulls, etc. On the plus side, things probably won't shrink unless the previous owner never wore/washed the item. read more

A chunk of the clothes here are in poor condition and of questionable taste-- which is not at all aligned with the whole concept of the store. If I could leave no stars, I would. The fact that I brought in namebrand clothes that I've spent a lot of money on, that have gotten small over the winter and just simply do not fit me anymore, and the woman that was taking the clothes out of the bag to see what they would buy from me, didn't even unfolds any of the items that I brought. I was standing there watching her, which she did not notice me, and she did not even take a second of her time to dump the bag and put the clothes back in the bag. The whole point of having her job is to look at the actual items, not skim through them. It was obvious that she was extremely careless. I walked out of the store and didn't even grab my bag. What I will be doing is going back and taking everything including the one single item that she put aside from the entire bag, and will be bringing it to a woman's shelter where they can actually use these things without anything expected in return. It's honestly a shame that this store is run that way. It's not even about getting a few dollars from selling clothes, that's not the principle. I'm taking time out of my day with my items to be looked at carefully as they deserve. As well as that girl doing her job. Don't sell here. I went to Plato's last week and the employees were talking bad about the workout clothes I was selling, while I was a few feet away. On top of the I had accidentally put a porcelain night light in the bag to keep it safe from breaking in my car. Unfortunately I forgot to retrieve the light before selling my clothes and someone took the light. I had another figurine that they had put back in with the clothes that they did not buy. I called back to ask for my light I was told there was nothing they could do. I'm pretty sure someone stole it, a night light doesn't "get lost" in a clothing store. I don't know why I keep bringing my clothes here, I always end up mildly pissed when I go to leave. While the associates are nice enough, the store is DUSTY and filled with some seriously trashed clothes. Deodorant stains and clothes with rips that arent supposed to be there? What does your system of keeping and passing on items even entail, because it seriously makes no sense. My experience here has always been a positive one. When you are a store that buys clothes, they need to be picky. They bee to make sure what they buy is going to sell and if it doesn't, they don't make money off of clothes that just sit on the racks. Am I upset when they don't take some stuff? Yeah but then I'm able to donate what they don't take to someone who may need it so somebody will win in the end. When I shop here, it's typically a hit or miss. Either I do really well or I walk out with nothing. I usually go in there looking for something specific (like right now I really enjoy rompers and t-shirt dresses). I typically show up at least once a week (twice if I have time) because the inventory changes so often with people selling clothes on the daily. The day I discovered this store has changed me, it allows my closet to change regularly and be more fashionably on point! read more

If you want to sell your clothes here...don't waste your time. Even if you have brand names that they claim to want they won't take even half of your things that ARE name brand! And then you leave with less then $10 for THREE items. One of which was brand new and had the tag on it which read $15. Now I did not expect a ton of money and understand that they have to be selective, but c'mon. The three things they took cost over $30 and were not stained and were in PERFECT condition. So it's insulting that they offered me $7.40 for ALL of it. And to top it ALL off, the clothes in the store that they were selling looked very outdated, so I was very confused about why my brand name clothes were not taken, yet these granny knitted sweaters were! Will never shop here again! I brought in a laundry basket full of clothes and when I came later to pick it up, the basket had another girl's clothes in it! They lost ALL my clothes and when I asked if I would be reimbursed they said absolutely not. I asked to speak to a manager and they said the manager wasn't there, but the assistant was. She was completely rude and told me that they wouldn't miss my patronage. Hello, it's called customer service! I would've been happy with a gift card or something, but didn't even receive an apology. I'm giving this place two stars because occasionally I've had good luck there, both with purchasing and donating clothes. Not always great though. However, I recently had an experience there that made me never want to go back to this location. I brought in a bag full of clothes and the girl told me it would take about ten minutes to sort through. She had long brown hair and was wearing a purple tank top. I decided to walk around the store and look around since it wasn't going to take long (sometimes they tell me it will be about 45 minutes to an hour). A second employee walked in, I'm assuming it was the beginning of her shift, and started making friendly conversation with the first girl. I was looking at jewelry, which is located close to the register, so I was able to hear the original girl say, "SAVANNAH. You need to STOP TALKING and start doing things you might've forgotten in the last week." I thought this seemed rude, as Savannah was just trying to be friendly. I saw Savannah bring some clothes over to a rack and begin hanging them. The original girl screamed across the room, pointing to me, "SAVANNAH! THERE IS A CUSTOMER READY TO CHECK OUT. WHY ARE YOU HANGING THINGS UP RIGHT NOW?" So I said, "No, I'm waiting for you to sort through my clothes," to which she apologized. Savannah came back behind the register and the first girl says, "DON'T GO ANYWHERE. I don't know why you aren't just staying here when there are clearly customers waiting in line." ....there wasn't anyone in line. There have been times where I've been irritated with my coworkers, but I would never yell at them in front of a store full of customers. It was so unprofessional and even prompted me to tell Savannah, "You're doing a great job. I'm sorry she is such a b****." I hope whoever the manager is at this location has a serious intervention with their workers regarding how they treat one another. When giving me back change, they gave me a quarter which from weight (felt like aluminum), color, thickness and the way it clanked against the other quarter in my hand relayed the fact it was counterfit. The quarter looked as if it was new, yet the year was 1958. When I asked that they exchange the quarter, two employees looked at me with mocking smiles like you can't be serious, as the cashier took the quarter, rolled her eyes and threw the coin back in the register. Unless quarters were made with a lighter material prior to 1958, one less maleable, I do not believe for one second that was real. Perhaps it even came from a child's "fake money"; Neverthless, they are entitled to their own opinion, but not entitled to treating a customer with such rudeness. I could care less about the 25 cents, I am more upset that they would act so delinquent as a staff. read more

I went here today with my cousin and the employees have TERRIBLE customer service. I walked in to sell them some stuff and they had me standing there awkwardly until after 5 minutes someone asked me if I was selling stuff. After I give them my bags and everything, my cousin who was right behind me with her bags, was totally ignored by them. Nobody asked her if she was all set with everything or if she needed help. We stood there and waited and the two people who were at the register just went back to hanging clothes on the hangers and left my cousin hanging with two bags of clothes in the front. Finally, someone came and took her things after waiting and watching them sort clothes. Then, when I came back to collect my money (they surprisingly took everything), after they gave me my money they still for some reason paid no attention to my cousin who was next in line after me to collect her money from what they took from her bags. Also, I remember both of the times I came in there was no greeting or anything like that. I was shopping at another store in the complex when I spotted Plato's closet and thought I'd check it out. When I walked in, the two girls working the front register made eye contact but neither one of them said hello or acknowledged me. They continue chatting about whatever topic seemed more important than acknowledging a customer. The inventory is tightly crammed onto the racks which makes browsing and shopping inconvenient. The few items I bothered to look at that, caught my eye were, no bargain. I could just as easily walk into TJ Maxx or Marshal's and buy similar garments brand-new. As I made my way back to the front store, I again walked past the two girls, who again made eye contact, but didn't even bother to say hello. I was hoping to return home and tell my wife that I found a cool new store that she needs to check out. I will save her the trouble based on this experience. read more

I recently brought in clothing to sell at the South Windsor location and had a horrible experience. After poking around the store while I waited, I was in shock at some of the things that were on the shelves. Dirty, clearly heavily worn shoes, purses with marks all over the inside and the outside, and more shockingly extremely worn clothing with stains and HOLES. When the associates were done going through my clothing I was surprised at how little they took which is fine, but the associate was extremely rude to me. While explaining why she didn't accept most of my items in a snotty tone and with a disgusted look on her face she said, "your clothes are just too old and clearly not what we're looking for here, we don't accept clothes that aren't in style and we only accept junior labels." Ironically, ALL of my clothes were from Charolette Rousse, Forever 21, Express and the junior's department of Macy's, many of which still had the tags on them as they'd never been worn. Honestly, even if someone brings in clothing that they can't accept, there are much nicer ways of explaining why they had to pass on the clothing. Two days later I went to the Rocky Hill location to see if my clothes weren't "too old" for them. They took every last item that I brought in, EVERYTHING. The staff at the South Windsor location clearly isn't trained as well as the Rocky Hill staff just based on their attitudes and upon the difference in the quality of the clothing and merchandise at the two stores. I have been going to the Rocky Hill location for over 10 years and was excited when I moved to Manchester to find that there was a Plato's right down the road from me, I will make the 15 minute drive to Rocky Hill from now on. read more

I had a pretty good experience at this location. It was a long drive, but definitely worth it. The store is small and neat, and in the sections the clothing is organized by color and size--and style as well! Many Abercrombie and Hollister items were found closer to the entrance, although they were spread throughout each of the sections. PINK by Victoria's Secret had a ton of really cute hoodies for more than 50% less than the regular price--I snatched up two of them! The clothes were all priced great, no complaints there! The only thing was that if you're planning to sell anything, don't expect much for it. I sold a sequined cardigan from Old Navy that I'd only worn once and only got $3 for it. I came into Plato's closet thinking that me and my brother would be making over a hundred dollars with our 5 bags of clothes, 6 jackets and 3 pairs of shoes. We came out of the place with 60 bucks and they only took about a quarter of the clothes we brought in. The brands we brought in were American eagle, Nike, adidas, and some other decent brands. All the stuff we brought in were better then there whole inventory. Don't waste your time buying or selling there. Worst thrift I've been to goodwill is 100 times better. read more
