Have been wearing New Balance for a number of years and when the 990's came back in stock it was long past time for a new pair. Having a gift card my wife gave me 7 months ago I was unable to use it because they were out of stock in my size (12 wide). So when I got an email about them being back in stock I checked the website to see if they had them here and made a bee-line to NB of SW. I've been to the Avon location though this is closer to my home and I've shopped here before. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and while it was a little busy it was not a long wait to get someone to help me. I knew what I was looking for (990v6) and worked with Steve who took the time to verify sizing and what color I wanted. He came back with the 12 wide but he also brought a pair a bit wider than that and I wound up purchasing (the pair I was replacing were only size 12 regular and had holes in the side right where my big toe and my foot join [the metatarsolphalangeal joints]). He also took the time to put me on the 'pad' to fit me for the mid-tier orthotics they offer and came back with the right ones. Though I could have probably gotten a pair of shoes for less these are a great value for the money. The service puts it over the top along with the knowledge of the staff and attention to detail. These shoes tend to last a long time but when they need to be replaced I will most certainly be back. Walked out in a nice, new, comfortable pair of shoes. I have been wearing New Balance shoes for many years now. They are the best quality, and the shoes and the inserts were recommended by my physical therapist when I was dealing with plantar fasciitis. The service at this store has always been outstanding. I've changed from mostly walking to doing more cross-training exercises and wanted something that would be more supportive during moves that require more agility. While I love my 990s I ended up trying some 840s so I'll see how that goes. My wife and I drove down to New Balance in South Windsor so we could get her feet evaluated. We both believe she has been wearing the wrong style and probably the wrong size giving her foot pain. The experience was fantastic. Unlike most of today's shoe stores we were promptly helped and we explained our situation. My wife had her feet screened by a 3d machine showing her arch and any other foot issues she might have. The salesman then measured both of her feet and made two shoe recommendations based on her arch and the issue she was experiencing. The salesman laced up both pairs and even put them on my wife tying the shoes for her. That never happens in today's world. There was absolutely no pressure from the gentleman to buy anything and his recommendations were very comfortable. While we were there I saw the owner of the shop washing the spotless windows....now that's a cool boss. Now this isn't a factory outlet. These shoes are an investment in your feet. We went on a Saturday. It was a very busy time, yet we were greeeted almost immediately by a very upbeat and gracious associate whose name is Robin. I have wide feet, so New Balance is my go-to shoe brand. Normally a trip to a NB store goes like this: Me: "Hi! I have wide feet, and I'm an overweight runner, so I need some extra, like, cushioning. Also I underpronate." NB Employee: "We actually only have one wide width shoe, and its a cross trainer, its not for overpronation specifically, but I'm sure it'll be fine, what size are you?" And so I'd buy the shoe, I thought that was just the best I could expect. Yesterday I visited NB in South Windsor CT, and was immediately greeted by Ryan McCarthy. I have NEVER had such an amazing experience buying shoes. He measured my feet, explaining how I fall between wide width and extra wide width so the choice between the two came down to personal preference. He used a machine to scan my feet which indicated I underpronate (I knew this) but then he spent the time to explain exactly what that meant, and how my feet work to combat that, and the types of issues that might result in, (which are issues I actually have), and what qualities I should look for in a shoe. He listened to me, he explained things clearly. He presented me with about 6 or 7 different shoes, some in various colors (omg choices?!!), that came in wide/doublewide and had the sort of support I specifically needed. SEVEN DIFFERENT SHOES! I've never had so much choice. And he patiently helped me try on each one, in wide and extra wide, recommended an insole, helped me try on each one with the insole. He talked me through how the shoes felt when I was wearing them, like when the heel felt like it was moving or the toe area felt boxy. He was incredibly friendly and informative. He didn't rush me at all. By the end I tried one on with an special insole and knew instantly THIS was the exact right fit. I'm a sucker for awesome customer service, and this place has it! My new crazy hobby is obstacle course racing (i.e. Warrior Dash, Spartan Race, etc.) and since I signed up for five of these races this summer I decided a new pair of shoes was going to be my reward for the punishment I will soon face. It was super busy so I walked around for a bit first before I was asked if I needed help, but that was ok because there was a lot more to see than the first time I visited. They've got a selection of sandals and dress shoes now too. They weren't really my style but they looked comfy enough. I was helped by Dalton, who took a lot of time talking to me about what I was looking for and he did a foot scan, checked my size 2 different ways and checked my ankle alignment. With that he was able to come up with a shoe and an orthotic. I tried them out walking around in the store and all seemed fine. Dalton was a real professional - he asked questions, he listened to my answers and he made sure I was happy with my purchase. The next morning I went out for a run using my old sneakers with the new orthotic and that alone made a WORLD of difference. Using the orthotic and the new trail shoe I purchased the next day went just as well. A fellow shopper in the store asked me if I had purchased New Balance shoes before, and I said no. She showed me her bag full of 3 old pairs of shoes and told me that I'd be back again...and I plan on proving her right. It's pricey, but my legs/feet are worth it! read more

Stopped into New Balance was talked into a pair of M990Nv4 Running shoes. The Owner Mike waited on me. I told him I wanted a simple slip on shoe . He came out with 3 different pairs of shoes to try on . I liked the looks of the tan slip ones but he sort of steered me toward the running shoes He also did a scan of my feet and said I needed arch supports. Didn't tell me the price of those. And replaced the normal laces with elastic ones. Walked around with them for a few moments and said okay . $164.99 for the shoes, $45.99 for the arch supports and $5.99 for the elastic laces. So by the time tax was added it was $230. 75 Wore them at work for a few days. The arch supports made my arches ache more than the Dr. Scholl's arch supports. The laces no matter how tight I tried to tie them tighter , it still felt like they are falling off my feet. I took out the $45 arch supports and replaced them with Dr. Scholl's and also replaced the laces with Kiwi laces $2.00 With the new supports my arches felt better and laces kept my shoes from slipping off. But still doesn't feel right. Went to Cabela's and bought some Merrill jungle moc slips on . But Dr. Scholl's in them too. Very comfortable on my feet. I am a big fan of New Balance footwear since mid 1990's . So will buy them again just not from the New Balance store. I think I can get them cheaper at Bob's or discount footwear stores. Sorry Mike D but not a fan of your brick and mortar store. read more

My husband and I have purchased running shoes at New Balance twice over the course of a few years and we will never go back. I'm not sure if it was the computerized foot assessment or the associate but they put me in a sneaker for over pronating and stability. I don't need either of these but didn't realize it until after wearing the sneakers for a few months the sneakers were killing the ball of my foot and pinky toe. I went to Fleet Feet in West Hartford who fit me in a running shoe that actually works for my feet. I'm not an under or over pronator nor do I need a stability shoe. But with bad feet (bunions, wide feet, pain) I'd tried everything else so I figured all I had to lose was money. (haha). Well, I'm in love with this place now. Today I went in looking for something stylish to wear with my sundresses and sure enough they had the cutest pair of shoes made by New Balance called Aravon. And true to form, the salesperson took his time to fit me perfectly, which was a bit difficult since I'd just had foot surgery and one foot was still swollen. Yes, I paid what some might consider "a lot" for shoes, but believe me these beautiful shoes (along with my sneakers) will be the ones I grab on a daily basis for style as well as comfort. I came in to check out how I could solve my metatarsal problem. The clerk showed me the $60.00 inserts for my sneakers. He ASKED me what size I wear and I told him. He proceeded to bring out the most expensive sneakers in the store...total cost would have been a little over $250.00. This is not the worst part....I decided to shop around. I ended up at DSW of all places. Someone came out and actually measured my foot.....and I was actually a 1/2 size more than I had told the salesman. So I would have spent $250.00 on something that wasn't even my size. I can't believe that no one bothered to measure my foot at New Balance and expected me to dish out $250.00. I visited this store again recently as it is tax free week in ct and I try to buy at least one pair a year during this time. They were very busy when I walked in but I was greeted quickly and offered a bottle of water while I wait for the next available sales person. It took a few mins for someone to come over. He helped me get the update to my current pair of sneakers and checked to make sure they fit. He also offered to do the foot machine on again to double check everything. I love my shoes and my feet haven't bothered me in a pair of sneakers since I started buying them here a few years ago. I use them for work and am on them all day on concrete so that says a lot! Unfortunately, I don't have great things to say about my experience. The people were friendly, they had a lot of shoes to look at, but I ended up with a pair of sneakers that are way too big for me. The guy measuring my feet told me I had a 'wide' foot. I was shocked, because I've never worn a wide shoe. I thought maybe wearing regular shoes was contributing to my arch pain, so I went with it. I asked him if he was a runner, and he said no, that he only lifted weights. Alarm bells went off in my head, but again, I thought between standing on the scanner and having him watch my gait, he knew best. I paid $100+ for shoes that I wore only a handful of times, because they were too loose. Now they just sit in my trunk in case I ever need an emergency pair of shoes. I went into this store in a state of massive panic the night before I leave for Disney, and I had been to EVERY shoe-selling store within a 30 mile radius!!!! There were two gentlemen working when I crashed through the doors in a state of panic 20 minutes before they were closing! I explained to these gentlemen my situation and said I HAVE to purchase a pair of shoes NOW! They both gladly assisted me, they have amazing technology too. You stand on this mat that is hooked up to the computer; the screen shows a heat and weight-sensored image of your feet showing where you put the most weight on your feet. They then make a reccomendation of what shoes would be best for your feet. I was so impressed and will be visiting again once my amazing shoes wear out!! A MUST SHOP STORE!!!! read more

I'm new to running and wanted a good pair of shoes. The electronic fit machine they used wasn't helpful at all. It said I was a size 6 with low arches. But I ended up needing a 7.5 when I tried the shoes on! and my arches needed the highest arch support insoles instead of the lowest ones like the machine recommended. They also recommended stability shoes based on how I stood on it. But when I tried them on, they felt completely wrong. The staff were really pushy and when I said they don't feel right, they just kept trying new inserts, heel cups, etc. but nothing really improved the feel of the shoes. They wouldn't take "it doesn't feel right" as an answer and kept saying "you just need to break them in and they will feel better". Sure... so I buy a pair of shoes for close to $200 with all the inserts they added on, wear them for a while to break them in, and when they still don't fit right, I can't return them because they're worn? I don't think so! I went to another running store who did a proper foot analysis while in motion on a treadmill. They said it's crazy to call me a pronator, I'm a neutral (and even slightly supinate with one foot). NB was way off the mark and pushy customer service was definitely not appreciated. read more

For the high prices I expected that you could get sneakers with high arches. Maybe the salesman was being too technical?
