My boyfriend and I stopped in yesterday to drop off some things we haven't worn in way too long. While yes, we have seen some of that Marie Kondo on the tv, we've had these piles of clothes for way too long. We decided to head up to this location (I live in the Mayfair area) because we'd be able to go to run some errands while waiting for our stuff to be looked through. The girls working were SO sweet and so kind and talkative to us. I've sold to Plato's before so I kind of had a good idea of what they look for: popular mid-end to high-end brands in like new condition (no stains, piling or holes). Between the two of us, we were able to get rid of over half of the things we brought in and will donate the things that weren't purchased. The store was clean and organized. Trying to take COVID into consideration I still can't muster more than 1 star. I drove in from the city to come here. I called the day before to confirm if I needed and appointment or not to sell. I was told I did not, come in anytime. I arrive and before the door can close behind me the woman behind the counter says sorry hun (don't hun me, your not my grandmother) we don't take sales on Saturday's in a November because of Black Friday (makes no sense). Not even a hello, or welcome to Plato's closer. I explained that I called ahead and was told to come in anytime, I drove in from the city, and she goes sorry you can come back tomorrow. I asked since it was their mistake if they could accommodate me today and she said sorry hun come back tomorrow. I will never go back to this store or any other Plato's Closet. I will go to Buffalo Exchange with my merchandise from now on. Terrible customer service, avoid! read more

After reading several of the most recent reviews I don't feel bad or out of place writing this. The only positive thing I have to say is that I was actually greeted today in a friendly manner. Usually the girls look overworked, overwhelmed, tired, or crabby. First off the store has definitely went downhill over the past few years. The store claims to accept new and gently used items, however just looking at a few pairs of shoes they were all dirty, shabby, and slapped on the shelves. In my opinion, before a customer sells something they should certainly clean it up a bit, wipe down, deodorize, etc. and if the store decides to buy it they should also either be pickier or have assigned employees to give things a quick wipe down. There are also a ton of clothes there that don't look great. With that being said I understand the the system has all brands in it and the employees supposedly type in the brands and what they can sell them for if at all. But there are also several brands that really should be included bc they can make a killing. Today I brought in an entire bag of shoes and clothes all name brand, most with tags on them. I walked in to the store really hopeful bc of all the items I had. 3 minites later I get a text that my clothes were done being processed. So I go back in and say "that was so quick" and a girl just remarked that they were good at their jobs. Not even kidding, they chose to take the two worst items I had in the bag. And offered me 2 dollars and some odd sense. They gave me back all my brand new shoes and clothing. The girls said to me "we sell things 70 percent off retail and give you 20 percent of what we would sell it for". Even so, that can't be right because there are so very expensive things in the store that aren't worth the money. You guys really have to do better. And evaluate clothes better. Or continue to accept junk. This was my final visit for real this time. I didn't expect to come home with a million dollars but your practices are crap and you need to train your employees to be more personable. read more

This store is a hit or miss. I don't think think they are well versed at what is real or fake. They was even fake pandora charm but they thought they was real , that's outrageous. I wouldn't buy from or sell to if I'm of a certain age over 23+. This is more of a teenager kinda store. Style encore or closet encore is more mature and has nicer stuff. And a lot of real designer stuff. They pass over a lot of good stuff people always leave disappointed or take back their stuff. read more

It is very nice when you are looking to get rid of some items and you can sell them and get cash to put towards new things. However, I brought in a pair of barely worn uggs costing almost $200 and was offered under $20 for them... Did not take up that offer. Also I find myself standing around waiting for someone to open a fitting room for me forever, if the staff is checking people Out i understand, but if you're going through a bag of clothes, and you see me standing waiting for someone to acknowledge me please help. The employees at this store are incredibly rude. Walked in with 3 items to donate-- vintage guess pants, doc martens, and keds sneakers. I was told that they only accept clothes from 18 months ago or sooner so "we would pass on stuff from, like, 2017." Was informed that the wait time was going to be 4 hours because a customer in front of me had 7 bags ( not sure how it could take the 5 girls working so much time to sort through that...). Waited for a while and saw many employees examining the pants, after glancing and the keds and putting them right back into the bag. When it was my turn to get an offer, it was $24.50 for the docs and the pants!!! That is insanely low. If they do not take vintage clothes they should just decline rather than give a shit offer. Also, in the store they had so much shein, fashion nova, and other fast fashion that the offer they gave me is just 10x more ridiculous. After hearing the deal, I did give possibly the meanest look ever to the employee, so then she sassed me, saying with quite the attitude "well you could always take back your stuff!" Would rather donate stuff next time, then at least could be given to someone grateful. Do not recommend. read more

The WORST PLACE TO SELL YOUE CLOTHES!!!!!! such a rip off , went in there today with 6 bags of clothes in great condition & brand new timberlands and uggs. Waited almost an hour to get a txt about when they would be done going through my clothes. They were only going to take 9 items and 1 or the 9 items were my brand new timberlands which cost 180 brand new, and they were only going to offer me $15 dollars for my 9 items, Needless to say I will never Sell my clothes here again !!! read more

I went there less than an hour ago and I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED! I brought two bags worth of clothes(brand named) and the young lady said it would take about twenty minutes to go through them. NOT EVEN TEN MINUTES I was called up and said my clothes "smell like smoke." How could they smell like smoke if NO ONE doesn't smoke in my house, ALL of my clothes were washed, and most of them had tags on them! Not even worn once! If she didn't want to go through my clothes, just tell me! Was she trying to embarrass me? What did she expect, just leave my clothes there? From what I understand, this isn't the first time this happened! Then, I wrote about my experience on their Facebook page and they deleted it! How cowardly and unprofessional! Just remember this Plato's Closet, word of mouth travels fast. Update: I took the SAME clothes in the SAME condition to Platos Closet in Montgomeryville the next day. I brought in an ikea bag full of seasonal designer and mall brand clothes, a third with the tags still on like ASOS Bodycon dresses, AE jeggings, Cynthia Rowley kimono, couple spring Zara linen tops etc. This was my first time selling to this Plato's. After the sales clerk finished her convo with the other clerk in the otherwise empty store, she acknowledged me. She explained that the items would be ready in two hours. I went to the mall. I returned and she handed back my bag, interestingly with the same items on top, and declared that my clothes were nice but had stains and hole and not their taste. So taste is subjective but certainly there were no stains and holes. What's funny is the thrift that I took the same bag to took all but four out of 30 some items. I will give this store no stars, they are TERRIBLE there is absolutely NO CUSTOMER SERVICE what so ever. They don't say Good Morning, Good Afternoon, nothing. I went there yesterday (May 19, 2017)to consign and they were pretty busy and so yet again the young girl with a very aggressive tone "i need your idea read above fill out below". After reading the terms i realized i could not leave my items because if i did not come back by end of day that same day the items would be donated and i have designer things that i absolutely would not want to be donated. So i told the rude sales associate i would come back tomorrow. I came back today (May 20, 2017) as i'm opening the door with an EXTREMELY Large and HEAVY trash bag i could barely get in before the SAME rude sales associate asked me "are you here to consign" as if i just walk around carrying large heavy trash bags for leisure. So i walk up to the counter and again no Good Morning just "i need you I.D" slamming the piece of paper in my face and all the while still being rude. They finished within 20 minutes i came back for them to take NINE items & tell me that Juicy Couture and bright colors don't sell. The items they took i could have gave to the salvation army for free i don't get their process on picking items out. The bottom line is this Plato's closet location SUCKS, DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME GOING THERR. Unless you want to be treated like you owe the sales associates something! Letter I Wrote: Dear Plato's Closet Willow Grove Manager, I drove 25 miles to your store in hopes for some extra cash for some really gently used, designer items. I bring them 4 bags filled with name brand gently used clothes. The shift leader names Kate says " come back in 20 minutes", so we leave the store walk to the car in the parking lot then get a text not even 2 minutes later that "your clothes are ready". I start to think " how is it possible to sort though 4 large bags of clothes in under 2 minutes". So I come back and respectfully ask the store leader (Kate), " did you go through all 4 bags that fast". She answered in a very disrespectful matter, " we do not need this stuff it is all ugly". I am still wondering how she could have possibly went through all that clothes in under 2 minutes. I am very upset with the matter I was treated in at the Plato's Closet in Willow Grove. I've sold clothes at this location twice now, and this past experience is starting to drive me away. I understand the staff has certain rules regarding what styles they want and what to look for when people drop off clothes, but I will not be returning back, to buy or sell. I brought in a large bag of clothing to drop off and they told me it would be about 20-30 minutes and they would text me when they're finished. Well 50+ minutes go by and I get no text, nothing. I wandered around the store and finally asked if my clothes were finished being looked at. They were, even though I had no knowledge of this besides asking. Best part of the whole bit was that they didn't even take anything, just one accessory. Again, I understand that they have certain items to look for and what not, but waiting up to an hour to only get a 3 bucks for an item is ridiculous. read more

Overall, I give this place a 3 out of 5. If I could give it a 3.5 out of 5, I would (4 for selling, but 3 for buying). First, selling experience: The person working there was really nice and helpful. (I went in the late morning time, so it wasn't busy at all). You sign in, and they give you a small piece of paper to fill out so they can keep track of the clothes you bring in. It took about 20-30 minutes for them to go through my clothes (I had ~30 items). In the end, they took about 20 items and gave me about $60 for it. They took ALL of my forever21 stuff (button-downs, skirts, dresses, sweaters). My other items consisted of H&M, Express, and the like. The stuff they returned was mainly due to over-wear (which I wouldn't disagree with -- some of my t-shirts were a worn more than a few times), and due to the style (they said some of my more business-casual pieces were too sophisticated for their demographic). I just donated all the clothes they didn't take. IMO, $60 isn't bad for a bunch of clothes I wasn't planning on wearing again. Con: they do not accept any Coach purses without the original receipt or certificate (their corporate policy). Honestly... I don't hoard receipts like that. Buying: While they were going through my clothes, I walked around. Most of their stuff target the younger demographic (teens to college). Clothes ranged from lightly worn to more worn/faded items. They have a pretty good collection of jeans (many AE, Abercrombie, Express, Aero, Gap, etc.), but none of the styles were out of date. Shoes being sold were very worn. The entire store smelled a bit funky -- but hey, it's a room full of used clothes -- I wouldn't expect anything different. Don't even bother going in. They claim that they need inventory so badly, but will not buy your things (even if you bring 2 bags full of designer brand). I don't think they even check your things because your clothes are left folded the way you put it. The clothes they do sell are old, dirty, and ugly. The store is supposed to be high end and in style, which many of their things are not in style. Also, the store stinks. You walk in and instantly smell how gross the place really is and no amount of perfume that they spray and cover it. The staff seems rude and lazy in my opinion. The way they treat customers, online and in stores, is disgraceful. I'm glad I'm not the only one with this opinion because I only hear bad things about this location. If you want to give the store a try, go to the Montgomeryville location. They're a little better. read more

I'd like this Plato's a lot, and I like the people who work there. I wanted to write this review because the grab bag sales, well great, are really hard to navigate with all of the bins. It would be awesome if you could put out some racks and hang things, as it would be a little more organized, with both the clothes and the people shopping. I went this morning the employees were very nice n pretty everyone was helpful. I brought in a duffel bag full of clothes and a purse full of bags. The usually take all the tween n teen lovable stuff I was actually surprised by what they took. I left with only 5 items n they took 16 items for 56.45 I thought that was amazing since I thought I was only gettin 20. Next time I'll go early n come back later since their busy. read more

Took many brand name items to sell. Some were purchased from them. Offered me $4.20 for a pair of Candies shoes, when I had Nine West and Steve Madden. Told me clothes were too sophisticated. Many were never worn ( Tommy Hilfiger, DKNY, and BCBG). In my opinion they are a total rip off. Took to Center City Consignment and walked away with $290. Came in with about 30 items and they were very busy. I dropped my things off and they told me it would be around 15-20 minutes. After around 15 minutes I came back in to cash in my clothes. They pulled a basket with the bag of clothes I had dropped off and one of the employees stated that unfortunately they were not going to take any of my clothes due to unpopular brands and out of season clothes. Now I would have understood this if I was selling to them old brands and out of season styles, however I'm teenager myself. I know what's in season. All of the clothes I brought in to sell were from Abercrombie & Fitch, American Eagle, Forever21, and Hollister. Popular brands for girls ages like mine. I have had problems with Plato's Closet before. They seem to pick about two of your items and then return the rest. They said they want clothes currently in season and in style. I brought stylish clothes but I guess they want clothes straight out of the department stores right now and into their store. Which makes no sense at all, why would you have a need to sell in season clothes. I'm pretty much over the Plato's Closet "experience". It seems that they do more selling then buying clothes anyways. I saw endless people walk out of the store with sad faces and bags of clothes the store did not buy. Will not be returning to this location or any other location. And I will not recommend any of these branch stores ever again. I will look for a better Closet Exchange store or give my clothes to good will. read more

I don't understand how this place has bad reviews. I go in here at least once a week and on their sale days. I love it and always find a great deal! I've gotten so many awesome designer clothes but also my beautiful pink coach and my newest edition are my Marc Jacob sunglasses in amazing condition.. After my 16 y/o daughter wanted to purchase a vest displayed in the window of Forever 21 and was rudely told that the vest was not for sale, I took her to Platos Closet. What a different story- here the sales person came from around the counter to help us find the perfect item. She even looked in the back for more vests! For buying, you have to keep. He king back. Sometimes they have a great sale. Over the years, many of their prices are kind of high, comparable to a good Macy's sale on new clothes. For selling female clothing, they must reserve the payout for friends of employees. They reject nearly everything. They've even rejected our clothes only to see spoiled or torn clothes on the racks. I'm surprised by the negative reviews. I've been shopping here since they first opened. The staff has always been friendly to me. Some staff members have come and gone, some are still familiar faces. They have all treated me well. Never had a bad experience with any of them. I always find great deals and great selections. I buy alot of clothes from there. They recently remodeled the store and it looks great! I love the organization as well. I have sold here in the past. I usually don't have a ton of items bought or much given for them. But it honestly doesn't bother me. I just figure it's not what they're looking for at the moment. A little something for the clothes is fine with me because I'm not using it anyways. I follow them on Instagram. I've found so many wanted items there and many other items that caught my eye. They post all the time including upcoming sales. Awful. Brought in a bin full of newer (worn 1x, maybe 2x max) and a bunch of New with tag Abercrombie, Hollister & Garage. They told me all of it was 'too worn & out of date'. So the 8 Abercrombie items that were brand new bought in the last 3 months were worn & out dated? We looked around the store and all the clothes were garbage. I can't imagine any teen being caught dead in 90% of their junk. It was all hideous trashy clothes. Nothing in style or fashionable. Are they told to only take draw & nothing decent and trendy? I have always had great experiences at this store. I've gotten some really good buys on quality merchandise, particularly on sale days!! It's good if you are looking for quick cash for items you wish to sell, even though you don't make a ton of money, but then how would they stay in business. I would recommend it! read more

If you're going to be ridiculously strict about your policies, then be strict about ALL of them, don't pick and choose. I walked in yesterday (9/12) with three bags of stuff, including a luxury brand wallet. The associates told me that they were interested in purchasing the wallet, but "for high-valued luxury items a manager needs to be present to price it and hand over the cash. The manager isn't here today but will be tomorrow, you can leave it overnight if you'd like and the manager will contact you tomorrow." Sure, sounds great. I get a standard text today informing me that my item(s) had been reviewed and are ready for pickup and to call with any questions. After an underwhelming payout yesterday ($5.50 for two shirts, one with the tags still on), I decide to call and ask if they are, in fact, paying me for the wallet and how much, because I live 25 minutes away and want to make sure I'm getting paid before driving all the way out there. The associate tells me that "we can't release financial information over the phone." I say that I understand she can't tell me how much if yes, but ask if she could at least tell me, yes or no, whether they are buying it. Because frankly, it's not worth it to me to spend an hour of my time, not to mention gas and toll money, driving to pick up a wallet that I no longer want, if they're just going to hand it back to me instead of paying me. She puts me on hold, gets back on and says that she can't answer my question, repeats the policy of releasing financial information and adds that 'we really need you to come in so we can verify that it's actually you and this is your item.' Okay, fine. I drive to the store, walk in and give an associate my name. Without asking to see any form of ID, he just pulls out the wallet and hands it to me, while stating that they "are passing on it because they could not verify it's authenticity and therefore cannot sell it in the store." Not only was I never told the policy about being able to verify the item's authenticity, they didn't bother to verify my identity before releasing the information to my face that they refused to do so over the phone. It COST me money to get an answer to a simple yes or no question. read more

Not impressed. Girls that worked there seemed really overworked. Dropped off items and was told a 3hr wait. I left and received a text about 2hrs later. I left a large bin FULL of all high end clothes / shoes Went back and had to wait in long line due to 1 person working register on a Saturday. The store is very small and barely has room to move as you wait in line. Just standing there looking around I was not impressed by the items in the store and the price of them. When I finally got to the register I didn't really have time to wait to go over what they took. I was told 12 items for $35. I just agreed and left with my bin cause I was over it all. Got home and looked in the bin. I noticed in that 12 items it included a BRAND NEW pair of Uggs, American Eagle jacket, American Eagle jeans (NWT) among other Abercrombie and American Eagle items. I can not believe how they took at least over $600 and gave me $35. I didn't expect much but that was just crazy. Definitely do not recommend this location. read more
