My son was cleaning out his closet and decided to take some clothes to Plato's Closet to make a little pocket money. He had heard mixed reviews about this location but decided to give it a try anyway. He brought his bag in, and they told him it would take about 25 minutes to go through the items and provide an offer. While he was waiting, I decided to go inside and look around because I had seen Plato's Closet before but never really knew how it operated. He described it as kind of like a thrift store. Overall, the staff were very nice and engaging. One thing I did notice when I first walked in was that the front area of the store looked a little cluttered with bins and bags from customers selling clothes to Plato's Closet. I understand that's part of the business model, but I think having a more separate or designated drop off area would make the entrance feel a little more organized and welcoming. The dressing room is very small basically just enough room to stand. I do wish they had higher hooks for pocketbooks or belongings and maybe a small bench or something to sit on, but it's definitely more of a basic fitting room setup. I actually ended up purchasing a couple of items. My only hesitation is the pricing. In my opinion, these weren't really "thrift store" prices. Most of the pieces I looked at were around $18 each, and then I grabbed another item for around $5. So while the store wasn't bad at all, I think it really comes down to whether you personally feel the item is worth the price. Overall, not a bad experience, just go in knowing it's more curated resale pricing than typical thrift store pricing. read more

Took three hours out of my day to go drop off three bags for them to tell me they couldn't take anything- they legit didn't go through ANY of them, nothing was touched. Honestly got the vibe they wanted to finish up and get out of there since there were a lot of bags up front. If the clothes these girls are taking are considering to be "trendy" or in style I wouldn't even bother bringing anything here just based off of their own appearance lol. This store is small, dingy, and extremely cluttered with mostly outdated raggedy and overpriced clothing. The employees are primarily teenagers who care nothing more than to chat and ignore customers while on their phone or discussing friends. I wish 0 stars was a thing lmao... the employees were the nastiest teenage girls I've experienced in a MINUTEEE. One employee was trying on outfits in one of the fitting rooms for a concert she was going to. She's coming out and modeling the outfits in front of the other teenage girl employees cackling and shit talking their friends so loudly .. I asked for a fitting room shortly after they made an announcement that the cashier is closing in 30 minutes; the girl trying on her lil outfits goes "oh my god" and rolls her eyes. EDIT;; upon doing research about this place/other locations old employees admitted to "helping out their friends" by buying everything they bought in. Wack business practice Eh not great for selling. The most I've ever gotten was $18 for 8 items... including brand new torrid jeans, pink sweatshirts, ae tops and jeans. They won't take anything older than a year. They didn't take 6 of my pink sweatshirts because "they were from 2 years ago, it says on the tags". Yes, they were unworn with tags still on them. Sorry no one older than 20 wears Pink anymore. Their loss because when I walked around waiting for my clothes to finish they were selling Pink sweatshirts for $18 each The clothes they do take are HORRENDOUS. It's extremely rare that I find something actually worth buying in there. Basically their whole selection is weird clothing from the target clearance rack in 2011. I gave this location another shot because I was in the area and I am full of regret. Prices may be fair, but clothing selection is terrible (unless you love Forever 21 2013 graphic tees). Many pieces are incredibly outdated, out of style, low quality, or have flaws (see photos). Not to mention that the dressing rooms are dirty and used for storage. I tried to sell some clothing to them and they wanted to give me 8.50 for 10 new, trendy items. This included 2 NWT items, one being a $39 corset from Urban Outfitters. Do not buy or sell here unless you are a tween. They have tweens running the place. I brought some awesome clothes to sell, they didn't buy any because she said they were "mature". The clothes included ripped jeans, camo cargo pants, forever 21 cropped sweater, etc. I waited for almost two hours and the girl kept telling me it wasn't done. Unfortunately, I must update my review based on my recent (and final) experience at Plato's. Yesterday, I came in to the store with 2 bags of stuff. I approached the counter and the man was too busy chatting and joking with another customer about his jeans to even acknowledge me, which was fine- I'm a patient person. Stood there for a while until he finally acknowledged me. Gave him the bags, he said it would be 15 minutes. Went to get a pedicure and came back. When I returned, I was happy that they were going to buy some things! However, my two Vera Bradley bags were only going to get me 4.80 a piece, so I politely told the woman checking me out that I would be taking them back. She said OK and adjusted the total. Got about 17$ for 5 things, but no one should come here expecting to leave rich. You sell the things that you're no longer using, expect a small return. As she was ringing me out, the man from before (who I actually think is the manager since other employees were asking him for overrides and the like) swooped in and basically accused me of stealing back my Vera Bradley bags..."oh no no no wait a minute..." I politely replied with, "I took them back." He backed off and tried to make a joke. I felt really embarrassed. He was being oh so polite and friendly to two young ladies who came in with their clothes crumpled up in a bag...so what did I do to deserve the junk treatment? Did I have something in my teeth? Did my pants fall down? No to both, so what did I do wrong? HA. I went outside to take a look at their clearance and found a scarf. Came back in and noticed that they had the sign on their Tory Burch flats wrong, the retail price was listed as the lower price and the Plato's price was higher, which made them look like they were jacking up the price. I alerted one of the employees and she thanked me. The male employee (or manager, whatever) came by and saw the empty shoe box and asked her if someone had bought them - she said no, the sign is wrong, and I said that I had noticed that and wanted to tell someone. He just rolled his eyes at me. That was it. I checked out and left. This was the worst experience I've ever had at this Plato's and I'm really sad about it- I used to love shopping here and finding good deals (and telling people about it), but after being treated so poorly, I will never come back. I never thought that my feelings on this location would change so drastically, but unfortunately, they have. Only come here if you like being judged and treated poorly for no reason! read more

I really wasn't impressed with this location. While the set-up is okay and the 3 fitting rooms are quite roomy, they need to get more employees. They were busy the entire time I was there (probably about 30-45 minutes), and it was quite apparent that the two girls (one was possibly the manager) were a bit overwhelmed. However, in between rushes, I brought a pink skirt up to them that had a purple stamp on the back so that they could take it off the floor. The one girl got an attitude and said "They should have caught that when we bought it. We're not going to lower the price anymore. Price is as marked. Do you want it? I'm not lowering the price, so if you want it, that will be the price." After her rude soliloquy, I almost walked out of the store except they were still waiting to look through my stuff. I noticed they are uber picky when it comes to buying stuff and usually give the reason for not buying as "items have excessive wear" (About 50%-60% of my items still had tags or were worn a handful of times, so I know this was bull and I saw them say the same to at least 3-4 other sellers). They did end up buying 4 items from me: an off the shoulder wet seal graphic tee, a forman mills romper, and two other non-brand name items for $13.40. read more

This place used to be good. New management came in and ruined it. Now they restrict you from buying anything good. They save the good stuff for their weekend events. It takes all the fun away from going in on a random day hoping to find something only to be told "sorry you can't purchase this item today but you can come back Saturday morning for our event." I had a terrible experience selling clothes today! I brought two baskets full of neatly folded clothes and was quoted 5 hours to review the items. I had no problem with the wait but I expected my items to be given back in the same state I gave them in. After two hours I was offered $42 for 15 items (most of which still had tags on them) carelessly tossed back in the basket. I understand not taking The clothes but the complete disrespect for other peoples property was baffling. Will not be returning! read more

Plato's used to be awesome when they first started. The last few times I went I noticed most of the store was just junk. Shoes on the rack that were extremely dirty and completely worn out. They had one section of nicer designer items but everything else was just garbage. I took really nice items a couple times. Large selections of well taken care of,some still new with tags very nice designer clothing and shoes. Every time they said I had nothing they wanted. Except once they offered me $2 for a brand new garment with tags worth a couple hundred. So I just decided I'm done. It used to be a great place for nice new clothes and to sell your old clothes for fair prices but now it's just a dump with really poor customer service. read more

If I could rate this store zero stars I would. I used to shop here all the time but after the way I was treated today, they couldn't even pay me to come back. Today I came in because I received an email about this sale they were having. When I went to go pay for my items, they told me that the only clothing included in the sale were they clothes they had out on the sidewalk. So My mother told them that that's not what the email I received said and took the taped down sale sign to show the manager that nowhere on it does it say, "sidewalk sale". I asked to speak to the manager and our cashier said she was the manager. I asked for someone more high up than her and she told me they were not there. The manager and a few of the associates ganged up on her and told her she was being disruptive and to leave the store. No one raised their voice. We were just kinda upset that they weren't going to honor the sale. So I offered to pay for the items after they asked my mother to leave and they refused me service. They called the police on us and told them we stole something from the store even though all we were doing was trying to buy an item or two that we specifically went to that location for. If this is how you treat your long time customers, that's unacceptable. Customers beware!! Edit: Nice response from Erin M. If your associates didn't try to gang up on us there would have been zero hostility. They gave us an attitude first. They weren't even going to give us 10% off and were going to charge us the full ticket price. I came in to sell my clothes, I think I arrived at 6:58 and by the time I was acknowledged by an associate it was after 7, (7:03 to be exact). I was told I could only sell my clothes before 7. Not sure what the deal with this policy is, and the associates were nice enough but I just don't understand why it's not advertised or if the store is open till 8 why I can't sell my clothes till then. I have visited multiple Plato's Closet locations. This one is undoubtedly the worst. The styles are targeted to a very young demographic. The brands are rarely high-end. I found a few pieces that were higher end brands, e.g., Talbot's, Free People. There are no designer brands or "vintage" pieces. The clothes on offer are often torn, missing buttons/clasps/closures, and wrinkled far beyond needing to be ironed. Overall, one is left with the impression the clothes came out of a stuffed bag. In addition, shoes are not sorted by size. Clothing racks are so full that looking through them is nearly impossible. This was my third and last visit to this location. I do not recommend this consignment shop. read more

I love a good thrift store and will most definitely be coming back to this location! Upon arrival, I was greeted nicely by a sweet associate. She really made my friend and I feel welcomed. It also gave the impression we would have excellent service -- which I believe we did! Yes, there is a lot to take in but I feel its to be expected with these types of stores. I'm not 100% sure if this place is consignment or donation or both. The logistics I didn't ask because I had so much fun looking at everything. Lots of good picks. I didn't see anything in bad quality either -- some things were obviously washed but not in a way that made it an undesirable purchase. I prefer second-hand over potentially overpriced and new (if it means saving a good penny). Therefore, I wasn't put off by this. Not everything was organized but my whole time in there, at least a good half hour, all associates were organizing racks and putting merchandise into designated areas. I've done retail and consignment so, depending on the amount of product, you might not always catch everything thats in the wrong place. But I saw them attempting to fix it and I was able to find lots of great stuff that was properly designated. Thats what matters! Dressing room I got was very spacious. Lighting perhaps not all that flattering but its okay. My friend I was with pointed out there were no plus-size brands or clothing. They went up to womens/juniors XL. Thats it. This is something I wish was different as I know several thrifters who would have loved the store, if they carried their size. Even me, I fell into plus size categories at times in my life so its unfortunate I wouldn't be able to go to this location. This would be my only advice. But maybe its just this location as I have seen other Plato's Closets. I want to go back already -- the stuff was so cute and priced well. The service was great, upbeat and peppy! You felt welcomed from your first foot in the door till it was time to leave. read more

I brought in 4 bags of name brand and designer clothing. I started walking around the store and noticed that most of the clothing they had available looked out of style, very questionable choices that I would have donated if were in my possession. Most of the items I brought were well above the quality, style and price point of what was displayed. When I was called to the front to finalize my sale, they ended up only taking 3 items out of 4 FULL bags. The three items seemed to be picked out completely at random too. No rhyme or reason as to why they picked those items and none of the others, in which most were sure to sell way quicker. Whoever they hire or whatever their "style guide" is clearly has no taste in style what-so-ever. If you're looking to just get rid of some clothes and make a little money while doing it, this place is fine, but it's likely that they won't accept most of your things. I've sold to places like this before and know the rules - no stains, current styles, name brands - but this one rejected a lot of things that I bought within the past year, some were never worn, none of them had stains I checked. I learned the hard way that not all locations follow the same policy. In the past year, I've sold clothes to the Plato's Closet in Broomall; they always called to let me know when they were done. Naturally, I assumed (and you know what they say about assuming...) that all locations followed the same policy. I dropped a bag of clothes at this location on a Saturday. Today (Wednesday) it occurred to me that I hadn't heard back from them. Turns out, the Willow Grove locay DOES NOT call you. They expect you to come back that same day for their offer. Apparently this policy is on the form they make you fill out (which asks for your name, phone number, and address, and is identical to the form I filled out in Broomall). Their policy is to DONATE any clothes a person does not retrieve. OK, so it's my own fault for not thoroughly reading the policy, but how lame is that? Is it that difficult to give someone a call before basically giving away their money? And to add insult to all of this, the saleswoman was completely rude on the phone, offering no sort of consolation or understanding as to the confusion. Just a simple, "We donated your clothes because you never came back." If she'd at least pretended to care that would have helped. Not happy at all and I won't ever go back to this store. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped in yesterday to drop off some things we haven't worn in way too long. While yes, we have seen some of that Marie Kondo on the tv, we've had these piles of clothes for way too long. We decided to head up to this location (I live in the Mayfair area) because we'd be able to go to run some errands while waiting for our stuff to be looked through. The girls working were SO sweet and so kind and talkative to us. I've sold to Plato's before so I kind of had a good idea of what they look for: popular mid-end to high-end brands in like new condition (no stains, piling or holes). Between the two of us, we were able to get rid of over half of the things we brought in and will donate the things that weren't purchased. The store was clean and organized. ATTN SELLERS: This place really only takes brand name things!! If you're looking to sell some cheaper brand clothes, it HAS to be brand new and in style; otherwise, they'll just give it back to you. (They didn't take any of my Forever 21 clothes, some even had tags) I sold a total of 5 items for $28 dollars. I definitely felt I should've gotten at least $35, but I was really needing to get rid of some clothes. I took the offer. I got rid of some Hunter rain boots, A&F high wasted jeans, no brand-brand new heels, some really old but not too worn Aldo heels, and brand new booties with a baby heel. Gave this place four stars, not because of their buying process, but because the staff was friendly, informative, and quick. Also, the place is really clean and organized for a secondhand shop. They carry a lot of good condition brand name stuff. Will be coming back for their huge sale, 90% off! Wow!! Look out for these types of deals here. Trying to take COVID into consideration I still can't muster more than 1 star. I drove in from the city to come here. I called the day before to confirm if I needed and appointment or not to sell. I was told I did not, come in anytime. I arrive and before the door can close behind me the woman behind the counter says sorry hun (don't hun me, your not my grandmother) we don't take sales on Saturday's in a November because of Black Friday (makes no sense). Not even a hello, or welcome to Plato's closer. I explained that I called ahead and was told to come in anytime, I drove in from the city, and she goes sorry you can come back tomorrow. I asked since it was their mistake if they could accommodate me today and she said sorry hun come back tomorrow. I will never go back to this store or any other Plato's Closet. I will go to Buffalo Exchange with my merchandise from now on. Terrible customer service, avoid! read more

After reading several of the most recent reviews I don't feel bad or out of place writing this. The only positive thing I have to say is that I was actually greeted today in a friendly manner. Usually the girls look overworked, overwhelmed, tired, or crabby. First off the store has definitely went downhill over the past few years. The store claims to accept new and gently used items, however just looking at a few pairs of shoes they were all dirty, shabby, and slapped on the shelves. In my opinion, before a customer sells something they should certainly clean it up a bit, wipe down, deodorize, etc. and if the store decides to buy it they should also either be pickier or have assigned employees to give things a quick wipe down. There are also a ton of clothes there that don't look great. With that being said I understand the the system has all brands in it and the employees supposedly type in the brands and what they can sell them for if at all. But there are also several brands that really should be included bc they can make a killing. Today I brought in an entire bag of shoes and clothes all name brand, most with tags on them. I walked in to the store really hopeful bc of all the items I had. 3 minites later I get a text that my clothes were done being processed. So I go back in and say "that was so quick" and a girl just remarked that they were good at their jobs. Not even kidding, they chose to take the two worst items I had in the bag. And offered me 2 dollars and some odd sense. They gave me back all my brand new shoes and clothing. The girls said to me "we sell things 70 percent off retail and give you 20 percent of what we would sell it for". Even so, that can't be right because there are so very expensive things in the store that aren't worth the money. You guys really have to do better. And evaluate clothes better. Or continue to accept junk. This was my final visit for real this time. I didn't expect to come home with a million dollars but your practices are crap and you need to train your employees to be more personable. read more
