Michael Overly is without a doubt one of the finest private music teachers in the country, particularly for guitar. I didn't realize it at the time (I was terrible about practicing what I was supposed to practice and Mike used to call me "Space Case!"), but his method and instruction gave me the theoretical and intellectual foundation to set me up as a pro player. He had an early handwritten version of his own method book at that time, and it was far superior to anything I have seen on the market since. I later used that book as a foundation for my own guitar teaching and when I lost the old book I did my best to recreate it. I can absolutely recommend him to any parent looking for a serious teacher for their own child. He also has the experience and theoretical knowledge to be a terrific resource for any adult player looking to expand his or her horizons to the pro level. Mike did a lot for me more than 30 years ago as a musician, and I'm very glad to have a chance to return the favor by writing this short review.

I told him I was just looking at his guitars. He hovered around and I asked him if he plays guitar. His response was a short, "yeah". Still no big deal, but not friendly. I spotted a nicely priced, and beautiful guitar so, I asked to see it. He obliged and got it down for me. I then was looking for a place to sit to play it a little (I pretty much already decided to buy it, but I usually never buy a guitar without playing it first). He then said, "Oh, planning on staying a while?". I just wanted to play it a bit before buying. I was so turned off by his customer service. I seriously felt like he was treating me like a criminal. I decided not to buy it and am really upset. It was beautiful. I refuse to give my money to someone so ungrateful for a paying customer. No one on this street in any of these shops treated me like this. He was the only one. He also sometimes attributes items as things they are not. For instance, he sold a friend of mine a small vase Stichter said was jadite jade, but was actually resin plastic. When my friend took it to his jeweler for appraisal, the jeweler laughed and said it was worth, "About $3." My friend had paid $150. When he tried to return it to Stichter, he was told "as is where is" and his responsibility was to inspect all items before purchasing. Overall, this auctioneer is mostly hype. Oh, I forgot to mention that he favors his own workers when taking bids. I have seen him ignore other bidders when someone on his staff is bidding on an item.
