I have stopped in this store over the last 10 years. In the last 6-8 yrs. the quality/customer support of this store has dropped dramatically. I purchase golf clubs primarily. I have found no deals on any golf clubs here in the last 6 yrs. If I find a club I need to fill a broken set, it is always priced too high (they are higher than any other Play It Again Sports (PIAS) by 20-500% for exact match club brands) and they are unwilling to negotiate a lower price except by less than 5%. By comparison to other Play It Again Sports - Shaumburg, Crystal, I was able to purchase the 2 needed clubs at 25% and 16% of the "negotiated" price of an identical club at the Waukegan Ave PIAS store. I do not recommend this store for any golf items. I will never again go to this store for any reason. It is not worth the trip (25 mi.) to waste my time. DB read more

So glad I found this store!! What a gem!! I came in a few nights ago looking to get my children ski equipment as they have joined a local ski club. Kevin, was super professional, informative, patient and friendly. He helped me find 3 pairs of boots and skis for my kids. The selection they have with sporting goods is unmatched. They have every thing a parent or new athlete could possibly need. Prices are great and some of the items are in new condition!! Service is whatever they don't know much about most of the sports they are chill. They have a small number of things really only good for hockey and golf. He taught our son about the equipment we needed, made sure everything fit, and was really kind and encouraging to us. The concept of play it again is great. However, the main sales person at this location was not wearing a mask and was incredibly rude. When my child selected a pair of ski boots, the sales person was incredibly rude (I understand the store was busy, but it is no excuse) and treated me and my child incredible badly. He rudely said the boot was not a fit, proceeded to grab my child foot, put it in a measuring thing, then grabbed a boot and force fitted it to my daughter. Her discomfort was clear (the boot almost did not go in) and the guy kept forcing it. All of this in less than a minute with an angry tone of voice. I took the boot out, said goodbye and left. PS:i know that boots should be snug, but I also know when they simply don't fit. I'm new to this soccer mom thing so when I got an email from my son's soccer team of everything we would need for practice (cleats, shinguards, 3" ball, etc) I had no idea where to go. As usual I turned to Yelp. I sat the family down for a delish lunch at Max & Bennys and ran my 4 year old over to Play It Again Sports, conveniently located in the same plaza. Clearly I didn't read the reviews very carefully and I also missed the AGAIN in the name because I didn't realize that the majority of sports equipment sold in this store is second hand. In fact, my first thought when walking in was that they don't take very good care of their stuff is because it looks used. Ha. I asked the man behind the desk to help me find some cleats and shinguards for my son and he begrudgingly pointed me to the back of the store. There wasn't a lot of organization to all of it so I went back and asked for help again and he (again begrudgingly) helped me find size cleats and shinguards in my son's size. He also handed me a deformed looking ball and I said (again, not catching the "again" in the name) "This looks like it's been used?" He replied "I guess I could just give it to you." I waited a while to be rung up, but to be fair there were a lot of people in the store who had also waited til last minute to get all their soccer & other fall sports equipment. I was surprised the total was less than $15. Later that night I went to read the Yelp reviews to see why it's so popular on Yelp and then discovered most of their equipment is used. Oops. I then increased my Yelp rating from a 2 to 3 star. Still not a fan of the service and quality of the equipment, but if you're looking for a good deal on used sports equipment worth stopping in here. I've already purchased a new ball, but the shinguards and cleats are doing the trick. Although if my son likes soccer I may splurge for a new pair of cleats. read more

Selection is hit or miss, prices are OK. Though there's a 'masks required' sign on the door, this is clearly just a suggestion. On 2 separate visits, customers were maskless while others had them under their chin, even staff don't seem to care about spreading COVID. Today was my last visit. I was looking for a used 25 lb cast iron dumbbell. Play It again Sports is selling them (and they looked used for the most part) for $44.95. They can be found new on Walmart.com for $29.95. Play It again Sports is selling a used item for 50% more than a new one! They can also be found new, either cast iron or rubber coated on Amazon for $40 or less with no shipping and free returns. They may have some fair prices but definitely don't buy used dumbbells there unless you are one! read more

I came here to sell some gently used sports equipment (including a nice lacrosse stick I only used for one practice). They only take in season equipment, so don't bring your Rollerblades or baseball gear in the winter! They were super crowded and the staff seemed disorganized. Staff: Selling stuff? Me: Yes, I have more in the car. Staff: Put it on the counter. Me: Shouldn't I mark it or something? (looks at counter overflowing with gear). Staff: No. We will remember. Me: How long do you think it will take? Staff: Oh maybe ten minutes at the most (HA! It took an hour!) Needless to say, I did not let my stuff leave my sight, which was good because they ended up asking me a couple times about which stuff was mine. I brought about 10 items, they only bought 3. After wasting an our here I got a check for $18. Which I think I may have lost... oops... While I was here I also got my ice skates sharpened since they were looking a little rusty and dull. They only charge $5 to do this. However, they kept forgetting to take mine back and I kept getting bumped further back in line. Then, I had to remind the staff 3 times that they forgot to charge me. And when I did remind them, they had me get back in line. Nothing like getting punished for being honest! read more

Tucked away in a mall near Nickel City, Max and Benny's and next to Title Boxing. Major win for our family tonight, as we found a completely affordable soccer goal net for my boys. We started out at the toy store, and then my brain remembered to check this place out... and... SCORE! I went to Play It Again Sports in the city a million years ago and scored an Anniversary Edition Nordic Track. It was my favorite thing in the universe. As I'm watching my boys in the backyard right now kicking away at that soccer ball, I'm certain we've found another favorite at our house! Here's the difference in price. We saw a similar net for $139 at Toys 'R Us. Here it was $50... oh yes! If you've never been here before, here's what you can expect to find. Most everything is used, and it's packed and loaded floor to ceiling here: - Skateboards - Treadmills - Skis - Cornhole games - Skates - Bikes - Soccer gear - Baseball gear - Racquets - Hockey gear - Lacrosse - Boxing So much more... Note: They aren't the bubbliest team of employees, but they get the job done and will answer any questions you have. Here's where you go when you want to try out a sport you think you're going to love, but maybe it ends up not being your dream. Not a fan. I understand that they're a business and businesses need to make money, but if you claim to buy and sell equipment, you should actually do both of those things - and do both at a fair price. They'll happily sell used items for more than they're worth, and then when you attempt to sell items to them - which you've called about in advance to make sure that they're buying - they treat you poorly and offer you an insultingly low price. We are moving across the county, and the final thing on our to-do list is get rid of my bike - which I bought from Play It Again. We spoke to them on the phone, and they said they were buying adult bikes. When we walked in with the bike, they offered me $12 in cash or $16 in store credit for a Schwinn Traveler in great condition. Funny, because I definitely paid nearly ten times that amount for the bike in the first place - again, from them. It's almost criminal. It would have been nice of them to give us a heads-up on the phone that although they were buying bikes, they were purchasing them for the price of two coffees. We thought about just leaving the bike there for them for free, but we didn't want to give them the opportunity to turn around and sell it for $150 again. read more

We purchased a pair of ice skates for our daughter and once we got them home and had her try them on it became apparent that the size had been incorrectly marked on the sticker. So we brought them back and asked for a refund. The owner claimed they did not have the ability to provide a refund. He was also extremely rude, as was the other salesperson with whom we dealt. The words they used were, "I don't care" and they literally yelled at us. This place is not only a rip off, but also employees (and is owned by) some of the just plain meanest and most unprofessional people with whom I've ever dealt. read more

Why even bother shopping at a large sporting good store that employees people who know nothing about the equipment they are selling? Play It Again Sports has the most knowledgeable employees I've encountered when it comes to sporting goods. Not only does this store sell used equipment at a reasonable price, but they also sell lots of new equipment. They will even buy your equipment or sell your equipment on "consignment" for you. Why leave old goods in your garage, sell it and make a buck. I always buy my snowboarding and baseball gear here, I even bought some used weight lifting equipment here, always a good buy and you can actually discuss the products with someone who knows what they are talking about. read more

I came here today because i was on the lookout for badminton rackets and cocks, shuttlecocks, that is. *blush* *I've visited this store once before in 2005 and managed to find a vintage Susan Sommer's thigh master machine with a full video set of exercises lol. Gotta love the 90's right?* When first walking into the store, i kind of felt like i walked into a dude's locker room. It was kinda messy, small, hard to walk around in, and it smelled like a used jockstrap. Holy moly. I asked the cashier if the store carried any badminton rackets and cocks, he said he wasn't sure but he'd help me look. We basically found every other racket except for the one i was looking for. Oh well, it didn't disappoint me because they're pretty cheap without having to go to a second hand store and easy to find, i was just in the area ya know. What i was impressed with was the variety of sports equipment i was seeing. Pretty much anything for every sport including tons of cool boxing gear, ice skates, skooters, and roller blades. I know that when i'm on the lookout for any gear i'll come here because i'll save a fortune and get decent gear. I think that they could definitely give this place some "love" by ya know, cleaning it and making it look hospitable instead of making it look like the black market of sporting goods. Waste of gas money and time! They will offer you next to nothing for your used equipment and then jack the price up at least 5 times what they pay. They will not bargain and the owner insists on making double what he paid or he will let it rot on his shelf. Too bad...thought this would be a good community store. Why buy used local when you can get new on the internet with No Tax and free shipping for close to the same price or Less? Sorry to say but in this time with the economy what it is...the customer should count more then an extra few bucks of profit already close to 100% I will never waste my time here again. I popped in here after lunch at Max and Benny's and the smell of unwashed sports gear met me at the door. Since the staff made no effort to greet me or assist me in any way, I guess the stench was the best they could offer. I was sorely disappointed in my whole experience in this Play It Again Sports. The equipment I looked at: lacrosse, soccer, snowshoeing and track & field was either used/gross or overpriced out of season new gear. Either way, no thanks. The soccer cleats were totally disorganized and any used pair was in worse condition than any cleats we have ever donated to AYSO and overpriced to boot. Perchance I am spoiled by living in a community like Evanston where we have an amazing Virtual Yard Sale on Facebook; E-town moms sell great sports equipment for 1/2 (or less) of what Play It Again Sports offers. The complete absence of staff assistance was a bummer too. They were physically present, just totally disinterested in doing anything other than talking amongst themselves at the counter. Don't waste your time!! I called first to verify if they were buying golf clubs. Pro brands or full sets only - I was told. After a 30 minute drive with a full set of Wilson Pro Staff clubs, I was told they don't buy Wilson clubs, only pro brands. Rather than educate them on the likes of Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Payne Stewart, Vijay Singh, Padraig Harrington and Kevin Streelman (to name a few), I told them it's a full set as you told me on the phone. "We don't buy Wilson and we're not buying 'em" he said. As a result, i left and posted them at our local golf course where they sold for $120 the next day. Don't waste the time for a phone call here and certainly don't waste a drive over. read more

Extra star for being open on Labor Day! We needed shin guards for tomorrow's soccer practice and Amazon (my last minute option) would not have delivered on time. There is a mix of new merchandise and used equipment. Shin guards were new. Soccer cleats were not but $9 for a backup pair can't be beat. Because of the nature of the store, merchandise in your size can be a bit hit or miss, but it is worth a stop. You might get lucky! read more

I bought a set of handle grips for my bike, and they said they would install them. They cut my handle grips off, and then cut away an inch or two from the new grips and installed them. They were way too short after having shortened them significantly, so my hands were now wider than the grips. They offered to give me a new set of grips, but wouldn't install them because they were "too busy." I left with my old grips (they did refund the ones I bought), but my old grips don't even stay on the bike because they had cut them off. read more

Great for Hockey! You can save a fortune by buying used equipment, and these guys make it possible. The store has enough size and scale that they have most sizes, girls, boys etc. However, beware that the selection is geared (no pun) toward kids, not adults. If you are a twelve year old, you'll have a better selection than if you are 40. They also have basic lines of new equipment, in case you think the selection is a little too ratty. We mixed our purchases between used and new. I would definitely go there again. Downside: the equipment is a little bit musty, and I'm not sure you would want the staff dating your daughter. Probably, the upside is that these guys play in rock bands when they are not working in the shop. read more
