My daughter skis enough each winter between Avalanche Club (highly recommend) and a few trips out West that it's worth renting skis for the season. Avalanche has a partnership with Scandinavian Ski Shop so we got her skis here for this season. We've gotten her skis at both Viking and William's in the past and I found Scandinavian to be the most efficient and best customer service. We booked an appointment for a Sunday afternoon in the fall and were in and out of there in 20 minutes...with skis in our hand. We just needed some snow, which didn't show up for a few months later, but she was ready to go for her first trip thru Avalanche in December. We returned the skis this week after she used them for Spring Break and I was a little worried it was late in the season, but they said we could have kept them until May. Granted they would be collecting dust in our garage for the next months since ski season seems to be over everywhere, but glad to know they are flexible. I'll likely buy her a pair of skis next year since I think she's fully grown so it's not worth renting season after season, but based on the rental experience I'd consider buying them from Scandinavian. They also have a great collection of jackets, helmets and other winter/ski gear that I'll be sure to check out for our entire family next year. It was another fun year on the slopes and thankful to Scandinavian for getting her ready for it! read more

I had a very nice experience here! Brought some boots I had bought elsewhere, got them heat molded at no charge. I came in about an hour before they were closing and they were very friendly and accommodating. Also saw him fitting another customer for some ski boots and gear and seemed like a good interaction. Also didn't try to upsell me on things I don't need. If you're hesitant about coming here, I'd say just be vocal with any issues with how something fits or if you're aware of any variances in your leg/foot structure or stance, definitely bring it to their attention. I did go in about a week beforehand to purchase new boots, but they didn't have much as it was end of season, however when I went back in today they had received a lot more boots and bags. read more

These guys are great. I think most of the negative reviews are folks frustrated with COVID related changes they made (appointments for fittings, etc). And just like all the local ski shops, they run out of season rentals really early in the season. That said, then unwrapped a brand new snowboard in 2021 for my daughter's season rental because they were out. They also replaced a set of XC ski poles in 2024 on the spot because of a faulty strap. These guys are honest about tunes (don't oversell), refreshingly old school & casual but know what they're doing with modern equipment and boot fitting technology. I do everything I can to support these guys, because there are too few business like this left in the world - especially on the North Shore. read more

Owner was extremly rude to my family when they went to the shop to inquire about Ski Rentals. They were sold out (Mid Nov) so they inquired about purchasing Ski Packages only to be met with more rudeness and snark in front of other customers! They left as we don't do business with places that treat customers that way. When I called and spoke to the owner to tell him I didn't appreciate how he treated my family he claims been in the business for 57 years. Maybe time to hang it up then Bud if you can't treat customers with respect. THis is a Public business with doors open. What do you expect people will not walk in off the street? If you can't run your business to accept public walking change your business model. I try to support local but this guy is not someone I'll ever do business with again. I was aghast at how rude, condescending and unprofessional the staff behaved toward their customer, and just how indifferent the Owner and other staff were when it was (politely) brought to their attention. These people completely misfit my boot, blamed it on me, and then treated me like it was my problem and that I was a big nuisance when I tried to rectify the situation. Completely unacceptable. Spent a week here one day while looking for a new snowboard for my son. They have been in business many years and are pretty much "the only shop in town" and they know it and really don't care. Why should they? Ended up buying somewhere else. Maybe it would work for you though. Your best bet might be to visit in the summer when they aren't so busy. read more

We purchased skis that needed the bindings to be remounted and we stated this when we went to the store. We also indicated the day we were leaving for a ski trip and they said that the skis would be ready the day before. We just fot a phone call, after they've already had our skis for five days, to let us know that they cannot refit the bindings. We can now not find any stores to do it before a ski trip. This is unacceptable and the worst service. We will never be returning here and will warn others not to bother with this store. read more

I had a great experience at Scandinavian Ski Shop today with my son. We had just come from Williams Ski & Patio where the snowboard selection was slim (late in season) and where we were told that if we purchased today (12/19/20), the board and bindings wouldn't be ready for pickup until 1/2/21. So, we decided to head over to Scandinavian, despite some of the negative reviews. The service was fantastic, and the gentleman helping us was quick to point out that, if we'd done as we'd planned and purchased a 145 board, my son would need a new board next year. So, we ended up with a 151 Burton, last year's model, so they knocked $100 off the price. He also soundly advised that we rent boots for the season ($100) rather than buy for twice the price, since my son is 13 and will need a new pair next year. The rental boots he gave us were brand new out of the box! I will say I'm giving them a four star rating instead of five for two reasons. The first is that their boards were more expensive. The board at Williams that we considered buying was $100 less than the one we purchased at Scandinavian, even with the discount. The other reason I'm not giving them a 5-star rating is that the guy helping us was so appalled at the fact that Williams would make us wait that long to set up the board/bindings that he made kind of a big deal of it. He mentioned it at least 5 times during our visit, and even asked me to recount my story to another employee. I mean, he wasn't wrong, but it felt icky to diss Williams, which has a lot going for it. Williams, after all, runs the Snowflake Club since the 1960s and they're likely responsible for creating generations of snow sports enthusiasts ... which benefits places like Scandinavian! Other than the two things I mentioned, I thought everything was great. And we walked out with a brand new (super cool) snowboard, bindings, and (rented) boots. I did barf a little in my mouth at the total cost. But it's an expensive sport. And we didn't know enough to be able to make decisions about used equipment on Craigslist. Maybe next time. read more

Unpleasant staff. Went in for scheduled boot fitting -- both men behind counter (one with glasses one with an orange beanie) were very unfriendly. Didn't want to fit my son for boots unless we were serious buyers because the boot fitting process was "complicated and could take an hour" -- in reality, it took 10 minutes. Very rude people. For a technical sport like downhill skiing, you need real knowledgeable support. You might save a buck or too, you think, by ordering online. Or, you might walk into the shop to get a ski jacket for your son, and find that in fact, the coat he's wearing is a real ski jacket already and you can save yourself 150 beans, and move on to your questions about goggles. At first I went in to drop off my snowboard for a quick tune. They asked me if I have a mask and I told them I don't and I have one and I have no intention to wear one. Everything was fine, I've assumed since they've accepted my business and money. I was told it would be ready for pickup at the end of the week. So far all good. All milk and honey. Now, I go back in the store to pick up my board and I have been greeted by Kevin who works there, asking me where is my mask. I told him that I don't have one and I was not going to wear one and he's very next response was you are an A...whole. How come I was allowed in the store, in the first place , they took my money and now all of a sudden I'm an A...hole, Hmmm. I brought it to Jeff's (the owner) attention and before I got an answer Kevin turns around and tells him "yeah I called him an a hole that's what's going on". Jeff's reaction was; he turn around and talked to a different customer giving me the cold shoulder. The moral of the story is that I am a Glenview resident of 17 years, and I am all for supporting local businesses, BUT, when you are disrespecting your clients nothing good comes out of it. Another funny thing is how Jeff responds only to those who are praising his business yet has nothing to say to those who have been treated poorly. I need to say that for being a major metro market, Chicago is very lacking when it comes to ski shops. You really have only 3-5 real, bonafide ski shops in the entire metro-wide area (including suburbs). By virtue that it's the closest one to my house, Scandinavian Ski Shop is the place I go for my ski needs. Given that I live in Evanston, it's not all that close, but it's the best I can get. The shop itself is quaint and charming. It has all the look and feel of a genuine ski shop you'd find in markets closer to the mountains. They have everything you need to completely kit yourself out in gear and clothing. For me, the prices run a little bit on the high side, but I feel like you're also getting expert service here that you won't find at other places. It should be a requirement to have knowledgeable staff help you find the right ski equipment for your needs rather than somebody who has never skied before (at other outdoor sports chains) trying to help you pick our your gear. Each and every skier has a different skill set, skiing style, terrain preference, gender, and body type. All of these factors need to be considered when choosing the right pieces of equipment. I also take my family's skis here to have them tuned a few times a year, especially before we head out west to Colorado. They do a good job, but there can be a back log at times. You'll need to drop them off and expect 2-3 days for them to be ready. I once called ahead to see if I could drop my skis off at night and get them back the next day. The guy on the phone laughed at me like I must have been smoking something funny, so there's your answer. Per the reviewer below who was able to get a mount for $15, I think they must have given you the friends/family discount. I also took my online-purchased, brand new skis with brand new rail system bindings there for a mount job. It's not a difficult mount and I could have done it myself, but wanted somebody qualified to do it. They charged me the full $85 price tag you mentioned you were quoted from somewhere else. Either that, or maybe your review gave them the idea to raise the price. I just want it to be clear that this is definitely NOT their current going rate for a binding mount job. read more

I've had skis tuned here, purchased skis for my daughter, and rented skis for my son. Everything has been perfect about the experience, and you will be impressed with the staff's knowledge of the industry. Don't assume that because this is in the Midwest that these experts don't get the sport, they do. As a new skier I've benefitted from some of the advise they've given me and my kids. Surprised to see all the annoying reviews about the lack of customer service. The people here have always been quick to help and they have been super helpful. I've been a skier my entire life, and have lived all around the country. Despite living near Viking, I drive up to Glenview for all my ski needs. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable, and know their stuff. I'm a total ski geek, and I wind up spending hours at the shop talking to them when I go there. They go out of their way to please!!! I bought new skis and boots on-line, and they installed the bindings for just $15. In contrast, Viking gave me total attitude for not getting my gear from them (see my review of Viking), and wanted to charge $85 for a 10 minute job. Summary: If you want to buy or rent gear in the Chicago area, go to Scandinavian Ski Shop. Great prices, great service, friendly and knowledgeable staff. First of all, I'm a regular here, just never thought to tell anyone about it until today. Countless times I've rented items with out hassle, enjoying liberal return dates along the way, bought some great cold weather gear as gifts every Christmas for the last 10 years, and gotten some great local ski tips from the folk at Scandinavian Ski; but never have I gotten better advice than when one of their guys told me to make sure I come back when they are having their annual Tent Event in the off season.. Several months and a fortune saved later.... for the first season in the last 14, (thanks to last years model and series closeouts) all 6 of us in my family (41. 34, 14, 9, 9, and 5 yrs old) are fully out fitted for boarding. It was a painful transition to make, from Skis that is, and more expensive than renting, but these guys found a way to make it work for me. I was at the shop this week and had a similar experience in regards to customer service. The gentleman made me feel like an idiot for asking if I could rent cross country skies. I had been in there the previous weekend inquiring about rental equipment and was told no problem, just come in when you want them, no appointment or reservation needed. SO when I went back to rent them I was treated like I had no clue there had been a snow storm that week. Even with my acknowledgement of the snow and my appreciation for the low inventory was still felt to feel like an idiot. I did purchase some merchandise there over 400.00 but will be returning that. I had such an amazing experience here that I had to leave a review! Last year I purchased a full downhill ski package and the experience was awesome. They were patient, helpful, knowledgeable and the prices were fair. I went on to ski several times on my new skis, and while the skis were awesome, I kept finding that my feet were going numb in my new boots. I was convinced that I just had to break them in, since they were performance boots, but alas - they were not going to work out. I thought I would have to buy a whole new pair of boots and try to sell my old ones on eBay for a fraction of the amount that I bought them for. Little did I know that Scandinavian would help me find a pair of boots that did work, over a year later, and let me even-exchange them! How awesome is that?!! They took down my name and called me when a pair that they thought would work better came in. The new boots are perfect. I just came back from skiing in Big Sky, MT with them and they were an absolute dream! I am a Scandinavian Ski Shop ambassador for life now! They really cared about my satisfaction and went to great pains to make it right for me. This is why you buy local instead of buying online. And they all were so nice and understanding. Go there! I have shopped at Scandinavian Ski numerous times, having purchased my skis and boots along with numerous ski coats over the years for my family. I was in recently to purchase ski poles and a ski bag. I could have been invisible for all the service I received. Actually, being invisible would have been preferable. Jeff the owner assumed that anything I inquired about was an automatic purchase. When I asked if my purchase was included in their sale, he treated me to a condescending lecture saying that the ski bag would be long gone by the time it went on sale in April, then turned and walked away. I won't be back. They do have a good selection of ski wear. Their rental prices are fair and they are lenient with return times. This isn't the first time I've been treated poorly by the owner, and with so many online options, there's no reason to return here except as a showroom. read more

Cool little Ski Shop! Found this place by a recommendation from an REI employee. I went to REI to have some bindings mounted on 2 pairs of skis I acquired. They were charging me $50 a pair. Unfortunately they busted their binding jig, so they recommended I come to this place. Really nice people and very helpful. It's almost like a ski shop you would find in the Rockies. Clothing selection was good. Ski and boot selection were on the light side, but for what they had it was mostly good quality stuff. Why the 4 stars? I think $200 for binding mounting for 2 pairs of skis is a bit rich and slightly over the top. This was twice the cost of REI and Viking Ski Shop only wanted $75ea (Viking tends to be high priced). I was a little taken when I got rung up, but had already brought all my stuff in, so decided to just go ahead and let them do it. I suspect they were charging $100 for each pair because the skis and bindings were not purchased there, but hey I'm a customer too! Was going to purchase some boots there but I was afraid of what I may get charged. Anyway, always up for supporting the small family owned business, but also believe in fair pricing. I'll probably give them another try seeing that they're close to me and seem knowledgeable, but if I ever need bindings mounted again I will likely look elsewhere. Definitely check them out, but be sure to inquire on pricing first! read more

Just like some of the other reviewers, I too like to support small local businesses. Usually you get far better service since you are dealing with the owner or a family member or employees that really understand that it is far easier to lose a customer than to get new ones. I merely wanted to return some goggles that I changed my mind about. When I went to the store to make the exchange I was surprised to learn that they had a 14 day return policy and anything that is bought at sale prices can only receive a store credit. They said that it was "store policy". Well, the problem with "store policies" is that they are designed to be in the STORE'S best interest. And when they are unwavering then customer be damned. I asked them why they didn't notify their customers that their policies were so different than what was standard. Their response was an insulting. They said our policies are in line with other stores. I said I'm pretty sure that 30 days is standard. ...sure enough with receipt: Dick's 60 days full refund, Sports Authority 30 days full refund, Target 90 days full refund, Walmart 90 days full refund, Amazon 30 days full refund. I'm not sure if the guy I spoke with was the owner or not, but, he told me: "...this is the end of the season, I'm trying to get things out of the store not bring things back in". He chose to be in a seasonal business. That is his burden! By transferring that burden to me makes me feel un-important. Any store or business can excel when things go smoothly. It is how a store reacts when issues or complaints arise, that is the measure of a truly GREAT store. It is unfortunate that more and more businesses fail to measure up but instead fall down the path to mediocrity or lower. ...BEWARE, this is not a great store! read more

There's isn't a more friendly, personable shopping experience out there. The owner, Jeff, is as knowledgable as it gets. It's his shop and he wants you to be happy with the right equipment. No pressure sales...just incredibly friendly service. The items in store are plentiful. The sales in the summer are insane. He's always willing to work with his customers and offer a fair price. I start and end my shopping experience here annually. There is no need to go anywhere else. It's just that awesome of a place. My only complaint is that it's a small store so they can't stock unlimited inventory. Some times colors aren't in or they've sold out of a particular item. Scandinavian Ski Shop has been servicing Glenview and the surrounding communities (i live in Park Ridge and happily drive the 20 minute commute) for a long time.
