Let me start by saying in the past I've loved Playa Azul. I haven't been to Playa Azul in over 4 years (I don't live in Wichita anymore and decided to stop in). My sister and I went on Labor Day (Monday September 1st of 2025) for a quick bite and break from being at St. Francis Hospital. This was around 4pm. It was just a couple of other tables there so it wasn't super busy at all. Our waiter was nice and friendly. Food was delicious. I'd give it an 8.5/10. I had the Chile Relleno Mexicanos. It's fried and topped with steak, white queso, and pico (8/10). Comes with rice and beans. Their rice was definitely a 10/10. Some authentic Hispanic restaurants lack flavor in their Mexican rice but not Playa. Refried beans were cool, standard 7/10. The chips and salsa are 6/10 and pretty mid in comparison to some other Mexican restaurants I've been to. My sister had a combination plate with rice and beans, that she enjoyed. We ordered margaritas, mango and strawberry, 7/10. All in all, food was great and it has been in the past. My issue comes with the customer service experience AFTER dining in. Both my sister and I were charged TWICE. We only ate at this restaurant once. We were charged for the amount of the original menu items plus tip we left. Then charged once more for menu items without tip. My sister noticed it on her bank account Wednesday, so she called and spoke with a lady who wasn't rude. She just mentioned if both charges went through (no longer pending) to come in and they would review. Today (Thursday September 4th of 2025), I noticed that both charges went through, and were no longer pending in my account. I called and spoke with a guy. On the first call he asked for the last 4 digits of my card and my phone number. Said he'd look into it and call me back. Hours later I called him back to follow up. He said that the "system doesn't double charge." He was antagonistic and definitely lacking customer service. Apparently your system does double charge as it happened to two people who ate at your restaurant. Either that or you all, who work there are entering in information incorrectly! Also, when was he going to call back and inform me that he looked into it and "their system doesn't double charge," and that I'd need to come in and show my account statement so we can "look at it together?" As you can see in a photo I uploaded below, I was charged TWICE! No one needs to scam or lie for some food! I paid and TIPPED! I WILL NOT BE BACK! How you talk to and handle people matters. read more

Average Mexican food. Very dated look and decor. Chips and salsa are great. They will be the highlight of your visit. Refried beans are dry. Rice is bland. The meat was really good and so was the taco that I bought separately from it. They have really good salsa/hot sauce that had a sage taste to it which I love. I've been here numerous times and never really had a bad experience but recently it has been a run down atmosphere with lazy employees. I ordered carry-out and waited 10 minutes when I got there for the front desk employee to finish her personal phone call... absolutely unprofessional. We got loaded nachos. The decorations inside the restaurant are beautiful and the staff seems to be attentive. Your middle he given nachos and salsa. Unfortunately the nachos are incredibly average and the salsa is below average. The best I can describe salsa is tomatoes with nothing else added. I had a "special", I can't remember the name but it was basically shrimp, steak and chicken with onion and peppers on a bed of rice smothered in white cheese sauce. First of all, let me say that I am devastated that I wasted 26 years of my life not eating at Playa Azul regularly. We had such a wonderful experience that I asked the server if I could move in and sleep on a cot in the kitchen. We originally chose Playa Azul because we were craving chips and salsa and had never been here before. What we ended up getting was so much more than salsa and cheap margaritas! I had the Super California, a burrito with veggies, beans, and carnitas smothered in sliced avocado, sour cream, and a green sauce. The burrito was massive and so delicious. The carnitas were juicy and packed with flavor. My boyfriend had the chicken fajitas. I'm not normally a huge fajita fan but these were so good that I was tempted to lick the skillet clean after it had cooled off. I finished my meal with a frozen mango margarita. The only bad thing about the margarita was that it was so good that I chugged it too fast and got a brain freeze. Can't wait to go back to Playa Azul! read more

After seeing the reviews on Playa Azul I was really excited about coming here. Unfortunately my experience didn't live up to the hype. As with most Mexican restaurants the chips arrived very quickly. Since this is my favorite cuisine, you learn quickly that the chips/salsa are a window of what's to come. Chips /Salsa - chips were average but the salsa didn't have a lot of flavor. I ordered the Chile Verde Pork based in the recommendation from the waitress. The pork was VERY good and had a lot of flavor. Unfortunately I can't say the same about the beans and rice as again the flavor just wasn't there. I don't think that I would return to Playa as the overall experience was lackluster. . read more

If Yelp allowed me to post "0" stars I would. It's rare that I write this negative of a review but this is based mostly on the fact that my husband and I experienced quite possibly the worst customer service we have ever had in all our dining experiences. I want to start by saying I was a little Leary about going to a 3 star place in downtown Wichita when every other place in the area was 4-4.5. We had went to the museum of world treasures and loved it and the lady who worked there was extremely helpful. When I asked for lunch recommendations nearby she talked about two places. One was river city brewery where we had already had dinner one night and one was "Playa Azul" She said it was good food, good price, and nice nice portions and if we took our museum map we would get 10% off. Needless to say she convinced us! We got seated and the waitress took our order....prices were good. I ordered a lunch cheese enchilada which was $5.99 and my husband ordered nachos which were $8.99. When looking at the menu my enchiladas said it came with a Mexican sauce so I asked the waitress what that was, she didn't speak hardly any English so she couldn't understand or explain. If this was all that happened I would've been fine with it. But I proceeded by saying no Mexican sauce, sour cream sauce?? Which a questionable tone. She said cheese sauce, I said no sour cream. She said again, "cheese sauce, ok! " obviously she wasn't understanding so I felt awkward and said yes. Again at this point I was still fine even though I think if you are a downtown restaurant where working wichitans and traveling tourists go maybe the actual waitress should be able to speak more English, but again I was still ok. We get our food, and it wasn't exactly what I would call big portions or tasty. The food was bland and We left still a little hungry so we to a coffee and desert shop. Oh and did I mention we were never offered or asked about desert. But I will say our waitress never came back to our table not even one time during our dinner so it was sort of impossible for her to ask or for us to get a desert. We finished our meal and I was still eating my last two bites when a guy came and grabbed the plates. As soon as he turned around and took off with our plates the waitress came over and sat the receipt down and said, "receipt" Well ok I guess we pay somewhere at the front? Not sure! But we felt rushed so I walked to the front. While walking up there I looked at the receipt, it had an additional charge on it. I asked the guy what that meant, how it was written didn't make sense. He said, you got cheese on the top so you got charged. I was like oh, you mean on my enchilada? He said yea and I said oh, I didn't even know I was getting charged for that, actually didn't even really know what I was getting. He said, and I quote, " it is on the menu" I was a little taken back that he was rudely coming back in sort of an argumentative and annoyed tone. So I said well I was just saying I asked the waitress for something else and she didn't understand what I was saying and it would have been nice to know I was getting charged extra. He said again, it's on the menu! I then said, "are you the manager?" He said yes, and I said well I've never been to a place where the manager is arguing with the customer. He then said " I'm not arguing, I'm just saying it's on the menu." By this time I was frustrated, this is juvenile. I said give me the receipt and let me go, I'm not going to argue with you! I signed the receipt and left. My husband met me at the door and could tell something was wrong. I will never go back and recommend others do not! Oh and btw the place is filthy and after seeing the kitchen on the way out the back door, I don't recommend going based on that alone! Absolutely disgusting and praying we doing get sick! read more

Restaurant as a whole is oder and filth free, pretty decent environment to go for lunch especially if youre in a group as there is lots of space. Absolutely love Playa Azul. Favorite chips in town. Service is great and the menu is diverse and really cost efficient. Their daily specials are always on point. Ok, I love this place, it is really good Mexican food. Many of the employees, English is their second language, this is usually how I tell if it is going to be good or Tex-Mex. We come here often for lunch and dinner at times. They have a good lunch menu. My husband really likes their guacamole, I don't like guac, so I can't say. I love their burritos and chimichangas (sp), and their beans. I don't like rice, so I usually leave it off. Their queso is really good as well. Their chips are good too, I think they are made fresh. They do serve alcohol, they have several TV's on sports, and they play mexican music, yet not too loud. They have amazingly HUGE cups for your drinks, and they are even better when filled with their Coke!! I do love this place!! read more

I JUST moved from San Diego...as in "shares a boarder with Mexico" San Diego. I lived there for 27 years so my expectations for Mexi food elsewhere were skeptically low. Went here on a blind date for Valentines day and of course the guy picked the place due to my incompetence of the area. I walk in and the decor was not disappointing. It didn't try too hard to be Mexico. It was a "hey, we know we're in the midwest, we're gonna do what we can with what we got". The service was excellent. Especially considering it was getting on the late side of the evening. The staff wasn't pushy whatsoever. They didn't make us feel like they were trying to purge us. I was really hitting it off with my date and was being very indecisive about what I wanted. They waiter must have come back 3 times and waited 15 minutes for me to finally order. The usual complementary chips and salsa didn't fail to impress. I ordered 2 enchiladas a la carte and true mexi girl fashion, wanted hot sauce. They brought out a saucer of salsa. Automatically I thought....Um..."where's the Chalula/Tapatio?". I gave the hot salsa a try before I started hounding them for hot SAUCE. I'm thinking it's gonna literally be "weaksauce" given it's the midwest and nobody knows "hot" out here. I was mistaken. My date and I kept choking on the sauce and it gave us a lot of reason to laugh and drink a little more. It was an awesome burn! I recommend this place to the Mexi food critics and skeptics. The ONLY thing I would improve about this place was the restrooms. One stall was locked with no one in it, there were papertowels strewn across the floor and the bathroom itself was super tiny. I am going to give it to you straight: this place is cheap and gross. If that's your thing, then be their guest (at your own peril). When I arrived at this unfortunate destination on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with my bandmates, I noticed that many of the plates on the other patrons tables were left half-eaten. This should have tipped me off to the quality of the food, but I remained ever hopeful...which is dumb. We were served chips and salsa, and they were merely serviceable in quality. I ordered a vegetarian option (I believe it was #3, featuring a bean burrito, a cheese enchilada & rice for around $5), as I was skeptical of the partially-consumed mystery meats I witnessed at other tables. When my food arrived it was lukewarm at best. Unmelted clumps of cold cheese inhabited the enchilada like a wood glue that had not quite set between two pieces of wet cardboard (i.e. tortilla). The bean burrito oozed a grayish-brown matter with the consistency of muddy Play-Dough. I assume this to be the chef's creative reimagining of the culinary classic "refried beans". Tasteless, lukewarm, and gnarly. Both items were covered in a red sauce that may have had flavor when it was first removed from the Cisco can, but had since lost the artificially-induced aroma popularized by so many New Jersey Turnpike-area flavor labs. Playa Azul is amazing. I went on a Wednesday night with my gal and we started with some $2.50 margaritas. The Mango one was delicious. The salsa was alright but the meal totally made up for it. I ordered the Chicken Fajitas that were also on sale for $8.50 I believe. The fajitas were out of this world, bursting with flavor, gotta love that grilled taste. A great location can make up for alot of things and old town seems to help buisnesses stay crowded. I am by no means trying to lead this review into a negative direction, because the food was good (nothing spectacular), the service was quick and friendly, and there is plenty of space for even the busiest of nights. All I am saying is that in another location this place might not do as well, but it's busy for a reason. The chips were fresh and the salsa was tasty. I love Playa Azul! I work next door and eat there weekly. Victor is very friendly and is a good business neighbor. Support these awesome guys! My go to is always the beef taco salad. I really appreciate that it has queso blanco on it. If you were to pull up the call history for Playa Azul on my phone, it has probably 20 records of me calling Playa Azul to get that taco salad. read more
