Not to mention, I love supporting a small business such as the local ice cream parlor down the shore. The new owners definitely put a fair amount of work into this place to distinguish it from the old Charlie's. The ice cream shop is completely rebranded - the decor is modernized, sleek, and clean, which leaves an upscale feel to the place. I particularly love the mermaid scale wallpaper - very cute and beachy. It's also very brave of the Salty Scoop to market both ice cream and coffee because those are two very different things that are sold at different times of the day. However, while I am glad that there is an ice cream parlor here, I can't see myself or my family regularly returning to the Salty Scoop like we did Charlie's. For one, they offer a lot less flavors then other local ice cream parlors in the area. While their flavors are eclectic and interesting, the selection seems a little sparse compared to their biggest competitors (the place has two other local shops both north and south of it). But the biggest flaw of the Salty Scoop is its lack of soft ice cream. I'm not really sure why the owners have decided against having a soft ice cream machine - perhaps its because they want to showcase their fun hard flavors? - but I think it's a huge missed opportunity, especially considering this is an ice cream establishment down the shore. Last year, the Salty Scoop opened late in the season, and it had me wondering if they would add in a soft ice cream machine this year - not so. It just leaves me scratching my head. We usually keep ice cream in our freezers so hard ice cream is not something my family seeks. And while the ice cream here tastes fine, IMO it's not out-of-this world amazing that would keep me hooked and coming back for more (like, say, a gelateria). In addition, considering the whole kitsch to this place is 'cones and coffee,' I was a little disappointed to see there are basically two separate menus for ice cream and coffee. You can do A LOT with ice cream and coffee, especially in this modern social media age where a single, cool-sounding item can go viral online. (How about offering a coffee-cream shake that combines coffee and one of the fun flavors of ice cream?) One last thing - I noticed they added a branded Playa Bowls menu to their selection, which is an interesting move to get customers in on their part. While it is nice to have more selection, it yet again leaves me scratching my head and wondering what the true identity of the Salty Scoop is. Regardless, I really hope this place does well and makes it - especially since there is steep competition in the area when it comes to ice cream! The property would truly feel empty without an ice cream parlor. Bottom line - if you're a local in the area that is craving a scoop of ice cream, this will scratch that itch, although you may need to go elsewhere if you're seeking a little more selection.

Sure, I'm not a "local" anymore, but when the menu stays generally the same, but the amount/quality/taste goes down, the spot loses its splendor. Unfortunately, this is what happened here. I've been back a good amount this summer, and after 3 times, you can't call it a fluke. Everything about the food has just gone downhill. $6 for a fish stick smaller than what you get in a frozen Gorton's box (which is so fried you can't even taste the fish), and then a sprinkle of shredded cabbage...it's not worth it. The chips are stale, not even their "almost famous" salsa bar can help. The rice and beans are not seasoned - at all - so be prepared to grab the salt and pepper. I was thoroughly disappointed by the guac as well. It tasted overly like lime and that weird powder season you can buy to make guac dip. My kid wasn't a fan of her quesadilla until I patted off the grease, and even then she said "I won't get this again". I don't think their soda machine has worked any time I've been there this year, so then you have to pay for a bottled beverage. Its just all more a hassle than it's worth. It's a great vibe and a great spot, but their food has just gone downhill, which makes me so disappointed.

An associate--who appeared to be new, as I've visited this location many times before--approached me and handed me a bag. She said something while doing so, but it was unclear. Assuming the order was mine, I took the bag and left. As soon as I got into my car, I received a phone call from someone who I believe was the manager, stating only that I had taken the wrong food. I immediately returned to the store and handed the bag back. The manager explained that it belonged to the other customers who had been waiting. He then asked me if I had opened the bag, which I had not--I had only just reached my car when I received the call. The other customers looked through the bag and said they would still take the food. Throughout this interaction, the manager did not apologize or take accountability for the mistake made by his staff. I was left standing there feeling as though I had done something wrong, and the situation made me uncomfortable, especially with the way the other customers were looking at me. I understand that mistakes happen, and I'm not upset about the mix-up itself. What was disappointing was the manager's lack of professionalism, communication, and apology. A simple explanation or acknowledgment would have gone a long way. Unfortunately, this experience left a very negative impression.
