Convenient beach, right in town withing walking distance, but way too crowded for me. Maybe I can take a few hours one day, but there are tons of people around, many hotels lined up and lots of vendors. You don't get one moment of peace here. If you want that bucket of beers, this is the place! If not, you can hail a can ride and find a peaceful spot right outside town. Playa de los Muertos isn't my cup of tea, but if you don't have to explore other beaches in the area, it'll do!

Translated into English, the name means "beach of the dead". It's far from being empty or graveyard-like as it's a bustling place of leisure and business. Locals seems to congregate near the "pier area", where a concrete catwalk leads to a contemporary, circular sail-like structure that also doubles as a maritime place of embarkation/debarkation. The rest is infested with tourists on either end. I'm not exactly sure where the beach ends, but I do know that it starts near the Mantamar Beach Club on the south end in Zona Romantica and according to online research, ends near Daiquiri Dick's restaurant which is about half a mile away. But, the actual beach continues north for several more miles along the Malecón boardwalk. The beach is lined with hotels, condos and restaurants, and is crawling with roaming street vendors selling everything from food to clothing, massages to henna tattoos, touristy junk to cocaine, and everything in between. Tons of beach chairs and umbrellas pepper the shoreline, with restaurant seating and cabanas also adding to the congestion. Just like other cities of the world, a "gay section" thrives at the south end via Mantamar Beach Club, Ritmos Beach Cafe and the infamous Blue Chairs. The ocean is a bit rough with shore breaks 24/7, or is at least when we're there in March. I've never seen one lifeguard either. The sand is a mix of white/dirty and is kept surprisingly clean and free of litter. You can parasail, shoot in the air with a jetpack or hold on for dear life in a speedboat. PERSONAL RECOMMENDATIONS: For snacks, definitely try the chips sold by the roaming vendors, especially the blood red-coated ones which look insanely hot but are quite the opposite. Or, opt for plain ones that get drizzled with a mild brown sauce and fresh lime juice. La Palapa restaurant. A favorite of ours, serving all three meals from right on the sand or indoor seating. Pricier than most but worth it. Probably the best eatery on the beach. Ritmos Beach Cafe. The service is hit or miss but the drinks are cheap and the food is good. Blue Chairs Resort. We've never stayed at the hotel but if you want a killer view of PV via a rooftop bar, this is your spot. Certain afternoons feature go-go dancers and club music. Need a massage? My spouse has had several relaxing sessions at the Sapphire Beach Club at the south end. Sunsets are killer! You're on the west coast for crying out loud!! OVERALL: The most eclectic beach I've been to.

"Overcrowded beach filled with beach vendors" This is the local favorite beach in Purto Vallarta so expect to have a ton of people crowding your space. I like my peace and quiet amd even get some sleep when soaking some sun so that obviously didnt happen here. There isn't much sand space as most are reserved for the hotel front. We decided to pay P200 to get a spot but even then someone stood on our shade so they pretty much got the benefit. Its that crowded. Then you add the beach vendors who kept selling the same product every 5 minutes. They came handy when we wanted something to snack on but remained of an annoyance most of the time. Not to sound mean but you would be in the same shoes if you get asked every 5 minutes. All in all it is for the experience so at least its been crossed off on my to do list.

Well, how do you shit on a beach in Paradise? I don't mean literally do a #2. For that, just buy a soda at one of the beach restaurants and use the baño. I mean how could you give a sandy, sunny, beautiful beach much less than a top rating? I guess I've been to a few less-than-awesome beaches in paradise. This one is not one of those. I can see why people gravitate here. The bay makes for calm, safe swimming waters (most of the time), the sand is soft, the sun is plentiful, and there are plenty of services. You have lots of space to bring your own towels and umbrellas and set up, or for fairly reasonable minimums you can get access to numerous beach bars/restaurants with chairs, umbrellas and all the fruity drinks you can hold. Want action? There's lots of it. Parasailing, jet boards, banana boats, watercraft, etc. You don't have to go in search of it, they'll come to you. Lots of vendors roam the beach hawking trinkets and various foods. The only thing you'll have trouble finding is a public restroom, but as noted above, just buy a drink somewhere and use theirs. The only thing that keeps this beach from being a full 5-stars in my book is all the action I mentioned above. You do kind of constantly have to fend of people selling you things or touting you to do activities. But hey, they gotta make a living too. If you prefer more serene beach action, head south to Mismaloya or up north to Sayulita. This is playa central, and it shows. Major bonuses, though, for easy waters in which to cool off. Park on the streets anywhere nearby or there's an underground lot near the escuela on V. Carranza. And I'm sure if you forget anything - towels, umbrellas, etc, you can find one for sale nearby.

Holy nut balls Batman! I never knew so many peeps could fit in a square foot of sand. Other than the techno rave at our hotel it was cool to be amongst the locals. One locals actually gave me one of their beers when I informed them that I ran out. If you want true Mexico with life and vendors go here. If you want seclusion stay away.

This is my absolute favorite beach in Vallarta. No, the sand is not white and soft. No, the ocean is not clear blue and gentle. However, the beach is lively, warm, and very inviting. There are vendors of all kinds wandering around selling their goods or talents. I enjoy interacting with these locals as they are kind hearted and friendly people just trying to support themselves and their families. I prefer to stay south of the pier, which is a gorgeous feature by day, and rotates colorful lights at night. People are constantly fishing off the pier or from the beach, boats traveling, people parasailing, fish on a stick, fresh oysters, fresh fruit on a stick, silver, massages, etc etc. There are restaurants and hotels lining this stretch of beach where you can sit for hours enjoying the sounds of the waves crashing. The water is very swimmable here but there is an undertow so be cautious. Never turn your back on a wave! It's my favorite place to be in my favorite beach town in the world. The sunsets are to die for, so make sure to catch at least one!

Music added ambiance but wasn't the pounding club vibe of some other places. Water in this area is calm and not overly crowded. Maybe I just got lucky, but the people sitting near me were friendly which was nice on my solo trip. The menu looks good, and those around me got their food relatively quickly and had no complaints, but my experience was different. It took forever to get someone to take my order. Well over half an hour, I'd been given no update about my order. When my waiter finally happened to pass by, I asked about my food, and told him to cancel my cocktail and just bring me water. I was so dehydrated and hungry . The water didn't take too long (though it should've been faster considering the extended wait already), but my ceviche took at least another half hour to get to me. It looked ok and tasted fine, but within an hour, my stomach turned sour. I spent the next two days feeling sick. It left me wondering if my food had been sitting out. I'm not saying don't go there, but be careful with what you order, and if your food isn't served promptly, maybe cancel it just to be safe.

Our server was a super friendly, hard-working man and he took such great care of us. That is a tough job, and the service was exceptional during our visit. We got a table and chairs, with an umbrella set up and we decided to have some food while we enjoyed the afternoon sun. As we sat and relaxed, it was apparent that almost all the peeps in our space were retired expats who had moved abroad. I have read about these peeps before ur trip, but never had I actually met them! We met a couple from San Francisco CA (my hometown) and Cathy had big science fair posterboards, with squares for the Superbowl! I swear, this was a window into the future because I want to be that person!! Ugh, back to the review. I was starving and decided to order the avocado tuna app, and the Caesar salad with grilled shrimps. Yo, the avocado tuna dish was so good! Fresh, cold tuna, perfectly dressed and seasoned well, served with tortilla chips. Excellent dish with great flavors. The salad and grilled shrimp were so good! Refreshing crispy lettuce, and perfectly seasoned grilled shrimp, with just the right amount of zesty dressing. I could spend the entire vacation just sitting here, enjoying the people-watching, the food, the drinks, and the sun. Wonderful experience and I would go back today if I could.

El Solar is no-frills, but it's great if you aren't high maintenance and want a place where you can drink and dine steps away from the ocean. If you come here, stick to the drinks. They were tasty and strong, with creative combinations. The food, on the other hand, was a massive miss. We ordered the garlic shrimp pan for $180 pesos and were disappointed. The shrimp was seasoned well, but the portion size was really small. The bread it was served with was stale and gross. We enjoyed the complimentary bowl of chips and salsas more than the appetizer. Next up we got shrimp tacos in pastor and baja styles (3 small tacos per order, $230 pesos each). The tacos fared a little better, but we didn't enjoy them as much as everyday street tacos that you can get from carts around town. My tacos had an off-putting, super bright, neon orange color to them (see photos) that admittedly freaked me out. I ate them, but I still wonder what made them that color! The shrimp was grilled with chunks of pineapple, red onion, and cilantro. The baja style shrimp tacos were traditional and battered and fried, with lettuce and sauce. The food wasn't bad, but I would not eat here again. The drinks were the real deal. Creative cocktails, including the incredibly tasty watermelon margarita, were home runs. Note that the drinks are VERY small, so you will want to order at least two per person (okay, maybe three). They also aren't as cheap as you can get drinks at other, more local bars around town, however. The setting is nice, including a large outdoor patio and seats directly in the sand on the beach. This is a public beach, so don't expect resort quality amenities. We didn't notice vendors coming up to anyone though, which is rare in Mexico. If you look like a tourist, they will bug you. The beach isn't glamorous, but it's a nice place to sit out and listen to the ocean breeze. Note that this place is near an open dumpster so if it's super hot or windy, you WILL get a wiff of nasty garbage. Note that this place is strictly CASH ONLY, or at least that's what they told us on the day we visited. Is this true all the time? I'm not sure. But bring pesos or US dollars just in case.
