My fiancé and I are temporarily in the area as he is a contractor, when we first came down all of the Mexican restaurants weren't in the same ballpark as to what we were used too eating back home, we had seen plaza in Glen Allen, and it was absolutely packed so we decided to give it a try, and it blew past any other Mexican restaurant we had ever ate at. I came here with a few friends, it was overall a good experience, and id like to give higher rating but it was really mostly just all "OK". I had the carne asada - which, was not carne asada. first of all it was cooked well done and I asked for medium. it was very minimally seasoned and if any of you have had a true carne asada steak you will know, this was not that. however the portion was enormous so its a 3 star vs a 2 star because overall the portions made you feel like you got a lot more then what you paid for, the carne was $16 so for the price it wasn't bad. but I would have had more respect for the place if it just said "skirt steak". because it wasn't special like carne asada should be from a seasoning perspective. we also got empanadas to share. the crust was flaky and golden brown but the meat had again, very minimal flavor. pretty much the theme of the night was that the meat was all very minimally seasoned but the portion sizes where quite large so overall, go here when you have a large party of not so picky eaters and you want to get out of the place without too large of a bill and some left overs. id rather pay more and get a better experience. but that's my opinion. read more

We love this place. Only four stars because there are a few things on the menu to steer clear of. (We love fajitas but the beef is a little tough-go for chicken pork or shrimp instead) However. Service was awful. Not even one smile. Went here for lunch today. Got the seafood chimichangas, they were okay, drenched in "lobster bisque" soup (for some odd reason). Didn't like it. Before I got my meal, me and my mother ordered queso. It took so long to come out that we ate our first bowl of chips, then when it came out our waitress said she would be back with more chips. Our queso was cold after 15 mins and had to get another servers attention so that she could remember to come back and bring us chips. We had to send the queso back to reheat it. Our entrees took a very long time to come out, and they were not even busy. Our server did not check on us once after receiving our meals. Will not be coming back! read more

This place has become a standard for our trips to the Williamsburg area. Excellent menu fare, and the margaritas are muy nice. They have a large menu selection with options for every palate, so those even your so-called food snobs (really, limited palates) that really don't know what they're talking about can enjoy the most benign and mild fare and still leave their egos intact. read more

Not sure what happened, however, the last several visits to Plaza have demonstrated that quality food is no longer important. Sunday night I ordered the 3 fish tacos and, instead of three separate tacos as usual, they brought me out a mess of fish, cabbage and tortillas all in one wrapper. It looked like food fit for the trashcan so I sent it back. In return 3 tacos all a mess each. I was too hungry to send them back yet I was no less disappointed. Food was nothing special....but nothing bad either. Service was somewhat lacking though. Everyone in our group said the food was okay...but no one said the food was impressive. We had carne asada, a Philly Cheesesteak burrito, enchiladas chipotle, enchilada and tamale combo and carne asada tacos. The carne asada was flavorful and tender, but over cooked. We ordered medium rare, but it was more medium well. The carne asada tacos were served with refried beans. It would have been nice to have the option of rice or beans. The salsa that accompanied the tacos was a bit spicier and had more flavor then the one served with the chips. The Philly Cheesesteak burrito had to be eaten with a knife and fork since the ends were not sealed. It was impossible for you to pick up and eat with your hands. Service could use some improvement. To his credit, our server came and took our drink and food orders quickly. However, once he brought our meals, we never saw him again until it was time to drop off our check. Eating this as we speak. Ordered to go for myself and a coworker. I got the 19 combo, 2 chicken enchiladas served with rice, beans, sour cream and lettuce/tomato. Thought the food was tastey (really enjoy the rice), above average Mexican. I can't speak on the authenticity, but this meal is exactly what I was looking for when my coworker suggested Mexican. The place was packed (like out the door) but my food was ready promptly 15 minutes after I called in. Everything tasted very fresh. Some reviewers have said nothing is made in house? Sounds pretty ignorant. I love making salsa myself, so it is very obvious this is homemade salsa, point 2, this isn't exactly difficult food to make so why wouldn't they make it fresh? If you are looking for something authentic, you are in the wrong area -- but if you like good Americanized food that tastes fresh and want huge servings for cheap, this is your spot. My wife and I visited while in town at Great Wolf Lodge. We were both pretty disappointed. I had the steak fajitas, which looked more like some sort of stir fry (looked nothing like the pic on the menu). The "steak" was tough and dry (99% sure it was frozen) with minimal flavor. The re-fried beans were bland, and what flavor there was tasted a bit strange. My wife had the surf and turf and was also not very good. The fillets were very thin and also tasted like they had been frozen, and the churro beans were almost flavorless. Strangely, the best thing on her plate was the mashed potatoes. The shrimp were quite small and had a strange taste as well. I think the surf and turf was just under $14 and the fajitas just under $13 so that probably explains the lack of quality. It seems like they're trying to be a high end Mexican restaurant at rock bottom prices, but the two mind sets aren't meshing well. read more

Like other reviews here, we're local and have been regular customers. This is our last visit. The food's still good, but the waitress talked to us like we are stray dogs who interrupted her evening. The one change we asked for is to have enchiladas made with flour instead of corn tortillas, just like we've done every other trip, but her reaction would've made an onlooker think we had asked for them to be plated with gold. read more

Well I'm a huge fan of plaza in general but this new addition is great! Try out the guacamole starter that they make fresh at your table to your taste. Food and service were great as usual. Great atmosphere, large menu, a lot of servers. Ice tea was large and I got a bowl full of cut lemons. It was a bit difficult getting the right sweetener tho. I ordered the Seafood Chimi. I really think Plaza Azteca has been kicking up the quality since they opened last year. Margaritas and table-made guacamole are certainly the selling points and you'd be fine for the evening even if that was all you had. However, I was there last night with a party that spontaneously grew to 14 people -- the staff rolled with it and no one had any complaints. This place is so great! I've been here a few times when visiting Williamsburg to see family. I usually order the burrito deluxe and my picky picky kids get Mac n cheese (it's like Kraft AND comes with French fries - my kids literally cheered!). Both times we went there was free face painting and balloon twisting (I think both Wednesday's) and the woman who does it is such a nice lady! My kids had full face paint, mac n cheese, virgin strawberry daiquiris and chocolate milk - heaven. For the grown ups: the food was delicious and a few of us made some additions/changes to menu items with no problem. Adult beverages were very reasonably priced. Our waiter was very friendly and fast. He checked in with our large group often. They even agreed to let me store my leftovers there while we went to a movie because I couldn't finish but couldn't part with them either! Unfortunately, a storm was on the way when we walked out and I was in such a hurry to beat it that I forgot to go back and get it! Excellent and fast service. Great, comfy environment. Free chips (which were warm!) and salsa. I got the chicken fajita salad, which was huge and super yummy. My boyfriend got one of their enchilada dishes (two beef, one chicken) and enjoyed it. We left with stuffed tummies and a very satisfied experience. read more
