Generous portions, and the food is pretty good! Staff is extremely friendly. Despite busy hours, they really try their best to serve you well. I personally love their guacamole bar that comes to your table and makes delicious, large bowls of guacamole in front of you. During busy hours, food might take a while. The nacho chips are delicious to munch on while you wait with the salsa and guacamole, but remember not to stuff yourself before your food even arrives! Drinks are okay. My friend's alcoholic margarita tasted very much like a virgin--we had to ask the waiter if we got the right one. Apparently, we did. Another friend's Cabernet Sauvignon tasted more like a sweet Merlot. Of the food we ordered, the mixed fajitas were the best in my opinion. I had an enchilada, which was average. Chicken and rice, quesadillas and chimichangas were yummy. They weren't as good as the Mexican food I've had in California. Still, not bad. Overall, good price for good food. We decided to give this place a try. We went on a Saturday so we knew there would be a wait. We were told 45 min wait. After 55 min I went in the check and I was told it was going to be another 25 minutes . They told me they had an issue in the kitchen they had to deal with . I had two kids with me and needed to feed them and at this point was upset with the situation and the way the staff was handling it. They never told any of the people waiting about the situation and just let them wait. I handed the beeper back to the woman and told her we were not going to wait another 25 minutes. Her response to me was " ok whatever!" And she pulled the beeper from my hand. Unfortunately we were never able to try their food but due to the way we were treated we will never be back! Love this place. The carnitas quesadilla is fantastic, the service is friendly enough, and everything was clean.

I thought the food was great as was the service. Sure, it's not true mexican food but the chicken was perfectly cooked, the sauces were flavorful and there was good variety on the menu. I got one of the combination platters and every item tasted differently which is rare...usually they all share the same general flavor. We also had 4 kids with us and the environment was perfect for them (just busy enough that we didn't have to worry about bothering other diners around us). Good mexican place, not great but solidly good. Salsa is a 4, guacamole is a 3. They make it at your table but the way the guy had it stationed, you couldn't really see what he was doing so what's the point? Wife and I had the fajitas for 2 and it was a solid 3 star effort. One of the better restaurants in Williamsburg Va it doesn't matter if you eat here for lunch or dinner the food and service is out of this world. The lunch menu is more than enough to fill 1 person. Because the price is of the food is inexpensive Everytime I come to eat here I try something different, and each time I never leave disappointed. Sure, it may not be 100% authentic, but we're in Virginia, not Socal. What Plaza Azteca lacks in authenticity it makes up for in consistently good (and fast) food and great service. We've eaten at this location (and the Newport News location they're currently rebuilding) over 10 times and not once have we had a bad meal. The chips are always hot and fresh, never too greasy, and the salsa+white sauce is tasty. We dined here after a day at Williamsburg and were pleasantly surprised! I ordered the chicken fajitas which were sizzling and the chicken was browned and caramelized like it should be! My mom got the #18 which came with a taco and enchilada w/ rice and beans which were both really good! The salsa was excellent and service was good. Delicious! Their burritos are fantastic. No matter what you order you wont leave hungry. Highly recommend the Burrito San Jose; a burrito stuffed with grilled chicken, Mexican sausage, rice, and beans, and then covered with queso sauce and pico. Burrito Mex was also great; stuffed with grilled chicken, rice and beans and then covered in queso and chipotle sauce, sour cream, and guac. Best Mexican food we've eaten and was one of the only highlights to our trip to VA!

Visited this location this past Memorial weekend after eating at the locations in Richmond. Server was pleasant but the food was subppar. Ordered OMG nachos and they left off two of the main ingredients. After we complained and sent it back the manager came over apologized and advised us that it would take some time to make up a new batch. It made us feel that if we did not know the difference based on eating at the Richmond VA locations they would cheated us. The drinks were just okay. I definitely will stick to the Richmond location in the future. read more

Visiting Busch Gardens for the day and decided we'd drive around and randomly pick somewhere to try. Ended up here. Best chalupa I ever had. Authentic or not it was awesome. Ordering the deep fried version didn't hurt either. The wife said her burrito was fantastic as well. Place was a little loud like someone else mentioned but that's what you get in a big open busy resturaunt. We saw the tableside guacamole prep and were astonished at the size of it. Couldn't help looking over to see if the four people at the table would finish it. Nope, they got about half way through it. Place was clean, service was fast and friendly. Honestly I should have questioned how low the price was, but then I always assume my bill there will be as low as it was in 2003. Fair as far as Mexican food goes. The one bright spot was the table side guacamole - give it a whirl. The waiter definitely colored some this review as he was substandard (which is strange because I saw several reviewers remark on good service). Ordered Queso Fundido for an appetizer, but it arrived about 5 minutes after the entrees were served. The waiter was genuinely offended that I turned it back and said no thanks. Enchiladas were fair and the shrimp quesadillas were passable. It should satisfy in a pinch, but if you have the time try a different spot. read more

Ordered a margarita and cheese dip. Gross. The margarita came from a machine (not necessarily an issue but in this case indicative of the laziness of preparation) and tasted like a frozen limeade mixture. The cheese dip was very heavy on the butter and it made me think my chips were movie theater popcorn. I've been to just about every Plaza Azteca in the 7 cities and have always had a great experience and enjoyable meals. However, today all I experienced was a ton of shortcuts. Our food was cold, unseasoned, and in my case not prepared as described on the menu. That being said, I'll never come back to the Williamsburg, VA restaurant again. If you're not familiar with how your food should be prepared, they will take advantage to cheat you out of what you are supposed to be getting for your money. read more

Aaaah, nothing tickles me like reading rave reviews for a crappy restaurant posted by Williamsburg locals. I can say with certainty that nothing on my plate was made in house. Allow me to present what I ate in reverse chronological order. I got chicken enchiladas. The sauce had corn syrup in it and resembled prego. The cheese melted on top was some kind of white american processed cheese food. The chicken inside was cooked with.....salt. And it came with a side of uncle ben's type partially precooked rice. Let us not forget the side salad that was diced iceburg topped with guacamole from a bag. I know the taste of bagged guacamole! I did not order the guacamole appetizer that the other reviewers rave about. What you get on the side of other entrees is NOT homemade. I had an appetizer of stuffed jalepenos. Since I already knew the place was crap by looking at the menu, I decided to get a barfood appetizer. Jalepenos stuffed with philly cream cheese served on top of iceburg lettuce with a side of ranch that you'd get on an airplane with the peel back top. The white sauce that Zachary G. refers to is this ranch sauce mixed with a sweet syrupy salad dressing. The chips and salsa were okay. Salsa not made in house. I understand that Williamsburg does not have the most adventurous patrons around. Still, I think a Mexican restaurant should show a little self respect and at least be courageous enough to introduce some actual Mexican foods to the poor starved population here. On vacation here this week and my husband and I went to dinner here last night. The food is exactly what we happen to like which is the american version of mexican food. Menu choices very many to choose from. Food tasted fresh and appealing to the eye. Wonderful atmosphere- actually upscale--but prices reasonable for what you get. This used to be my go to play for Mexican food. Today not the case. Well, the food was okay....OKAY, however, our server was the worse. Can't remember his name but it was Isla something or another. He had ZERO personality almost to the point of being rude. When our food was delivered it didn't come with everything we asked for and it wasn't until the END of the meal he checked back with us. On one hand the margaritas are reallyyyy strong (yes, I've gotten wasted off two of them and had to call the W&M drunk van to come pick me up.), and the guacamole is amazing. It rivals Rosa Mexicana (In DC and NYC) and is half of the price! But the food? Um, ick. It is basically fake cheese and canned refried beans.
