I stopped for a lunch break at the Plaza Dragon, which is a typical strip plaza Chinese restaurant located at the Sugar River Plaza (next to Shaw's, Family Dollar, and McDonald's). They offer the standard Chinese menu including Luncheon Specials (Mon-Sat until 3PM), mini platters, and family dinners. They also offer a lunch and dinner buffet (about 20 items) for dine-in or takeout. The dine-in buffet (Coke fountain drinks included) is $6.45 for lunch and $9.25 for dinner, before tax. As I walked in, I was greeted by an older couple (a man & wife in their 80s), which was unexpected since I initially thought to myself that they looked like your regular customers, but they do work here running the front of the restaurant (cash register and bussing tables). I was asked if I was here for the buffet, and I replied "yes" and I was told I could help myself to the food and fountain soda (Coke drinks) was included with the buffet. The lunch buffet had vegetable lo mein, pork fried rice, egg rolls, crab rangoons, boneless spare ribs, chicken fingers, chicken teriyakis, beef & mushrooms, chicken & vegetables, General Tso's chicken, fried shrimp, string beans, fried noodles/duck sauce. and soups (hot & sour and egg drop). Also desserts (fruit & jello) are served separately upon request. For the most part, the food on the buffet was not very hot, but just slightly hotter than lukewarm. Some of the food items seemed a bit dried out. The pork fried rice was pretty good, which had peas, carrots, fried onions, and tender roast pork cubes. The lo mein noodles had a good firm texture. The crab rangoons were crispy outside (not greasy) with a clumped cheese/imitation crab meat filling. The egg roll had mostly cabbage filling with ground pork and a slight sweet taste. The chicken teriyaki stick was sweet which had chewy tender boneless chicken. The hot & sour soup had a mild taste with generous amounts of soft tofu in the mixture of vegetables & bamboo roots. Overall, a decent small lunch buffet with a bottomless fountain drink at a fair price. read more

We have been regular customers of the Plaza Dragon for years, we drive from Claremont to Newport regularly and have found they serve the best Chinese food in the area. The food is always fresh, delicious, and the portions are very generous. They have the absolute best Crab Rangoon and fried Dumpings, and the combo platters have such a variety of scrumptious food. Also, the staff is always friendly and efficient. After writing this review I now crave Chinese food, now I need to place an order at the Plaza Dragon. read more

We went last night as we recently moved to Claremont and most options nearby were closed on Monday. The food was not good. I will not be going back and was so disappointed. All of the chicken was dry with bad flavor and the wontons had a horrible taste to them that I couldn't even place. The duck sauce also had a very strange flavor that was not appreciated. My family and I really enjoy the food here. We order take-out probably once a month, sometimes more. We've probably had take-out from Plaza Dragon at least 50 times over the years. The woman who usually answers the phone and runs the register is very friendly and has a great memory. She remembers the sauces we like and we've never had them mess up our order. I will say that I do not recommend the buffet unless they are busy. If they aren't busy the food doesn't taste as fresh as I would hope. read more

My wife and I stopped in because we had a long day and were hungry. We didn't know this place existed until after 8 years of going to Ocean State. We happened to go to the liquor store and saw this restaurant. OMG!!! We are so glad we found this place! We got food for two and appetizers of Crab Rangoon and Jumbo Butterfly Shrimp. WOW!!! Not the usual grease soaked food from the other Chinese placed in Claremont and the Upper Valley. All the food was absolutely delicious and the staff were super helpful and friendly. The best Chinese Food spot in Newport, and locally, period. They always say it will take ten minutes, and it's always true. My boyfriend and I have ordered here so frequently over the years that when he calls, they know the rest of our order. If he ever goes in alone, they always ask with a big smile, "Where is your tall girlfriend?" Visiting my family in Newport, NH and we ordered dinner from Plaza Dragon. Mind you, I'm not a big fan of Asian food, but I WILL tell you this: the food was fabulous! I ordered the M-6 Mini dinner plate that came with 4 crab rangoon, a fried chicken wing, 6 tempura style stuffed chicken fingers and two crispy vegetable rolls. WOW! I just LOVED the crab rangoon, creamy filling, just the right amount of cream cheese onion and crab, the chicken fingers were very light, fresh and tasty, the crispy rolls were SO crisp and delicious, all came with hot sweet mustard and other dipping sauces. OMG! The staff was SUPER FRIENDLY knew my sister because they have eaten/ordered there before. Folks, this was just a GREAT meal! VERY VERY reasonable for a LOT of food! Bravo! read more

Well, I have been going there for years and really liked it. However, this past year it has been progressivly worse. The food is NOT fresh. Two times I have gotten it home and the pork and beef have been rubbery and old. Tried it again and still a disaster! We use to come here regularly. Even brought my N.Y. family here and the food held up to their N.Y. tastes! That was over 2 years ago.Ever since the originals owners sold the business to their daughters.....food really went down hill! Gave it another try recently and still the same....General chows chicken was dried out and tasteless...just didnt have that good chinese flavor. How and sour soup just sucked! Best place for some Chinese food, definitely prefer over Ming China, which I am not a fan of. It's a laid back, cozy setting in the restaurant. My grandmother and I enjoy going to the buffet they have for lunch. They hardly ever have cold food there, and they always refill very fast. My son and I stopped in for a really late lunch. The buffet was closed, so we ordered off of the menu. There were no other customers there, but the family (multi-generational) was having their late lunch/early dinner. I felt badly about interrupting them. A pretty, nice woman came and took our orders. I got beef and rice off of the regular menu, my son got the daily special (6.95 + 2.00 for ordering after 3) and a bowl of egg drop soup. We both had water and hot tea. The tea was delicious, better than most Chinese restaurants. The soup was lukewarm, which my son liked (but made me nervous about food poisoning). The food came out rather quickly, and was really generous portions, somewhat good but not especially. My spicy food was not spicy, but that wasn't a big deal. My son's pork fried rice disappeared quickly, but he didn't eat his chicken and broccoli. I ate some of his eggroll, but didn't finish it. meh. The reason I am giving this restaurant 2 stars is because of the atmosphere and the bland, lukewarm food. The family had two children, a girl about 4 and a boy between 8 and 10. The girl finished her meal with the family and began riding a bike around the dining area. This seemed normal to her and the parents ignored it for a while, only stopping her because she nearly ran into me. The service was good up until the food was delivered, but then I didn't see any adults until I was ready to leave. I felt like I was interrupting the family's meal, and when both the mom, and then the grandfather had to get up to get our food ready, I was right. The restaurant was clean, and perhaps things are different when the buffet is going strong. I've no problem with the Chinese or their culture. I've no problem with family restaurants. But, the children there lower the quality of the restaurant by a lot. read more
