Absolutely terrible- I didn't think Chinese food could be this bad. I ordered a tofu dish- and gagged when I took the first bite of tofu because it was like a chewy chunk of grease. The grease just oozed out. And to top it off, it had NO flavor. The broccoli was so undercooked. My veggie fried rice- ZERO FLAVOR! Spring rolls- NO flavor!?! Seriously - I'm not exaggerating!?! I like this place a lot, I think it's the better of the two Chinese restaurants in town (although I wish they had a liquor license). I guess I'm pretty predictable - ordering the Mongolian Curry Noodles has become a regular thing. I like the sesame chicken and the fried rice as well. That stuff is pretty standard fare and doesn't really differ from what you'll get in any Chinese restaurant in the northeast, but the curry noodles are pretty different and really good. Nice staff, new owner as of last year I think. It looks like there are some improvements being made - they got a new sign out front, hopefully there'll be more updates to come. As other reviewers have mentioned, the Chinese food in the area is generally worse than in any other place I have lived. That being said, this is also not the best Chinese food I have ever eaten. It is, however, the one place I will eat from locally. We only order take out, so I can't speak for their in house service, but it is head and shoulders over the others in the area that I have tried. Some of the other places have been so bad that I walked out after a single bite. Their wanton soup is pretty good. They are always willing to eliminate the peas when we order roast pork fried rice. Recently I have been getting shrimp and broccoli and cashew chicken, and those items are quite good. The prices are higher than comparable take out foods, but there is usually enough for two meals for my wife and I. We have eaten their food several time each year for the past 10+ years, and at least once a month over the past year. The 4 stars denotes what you can get locally. There are two Chinese restaurants in Springfield. They both serve pretty standard cheap Chinese food. Shanghai Garden is a good value for your money. You get fast service and large portions. The food is greasy and nothing to rave about, but most of it is reliably good for the price. Their hot and sour soup is particularly tasty. Don't get the tea unless you can tolerate very cheap tea. This is the better Chinese restaurant in Springfield. Actually, it is usually quite good; perhaps the best Chinese in the area. Some of the dishes are a miss, but most of them I like a lot. They should really do something about the decor though, with the ripped chairs and such.. What a difference! This place has a garbage stench as you walk in. The restaurant is dingy and dirty. Light fixtures are full of dust so it is evident that cleanliness is not a priority. They have magazines and paper thrown on a table. Boxes opened and evident in main dining area with no organization. Again a testament to their lack of cleanliness. We ordered wings that came out and looked like they had already been previously fried. They were dripping in oil and slightly burned. Also ordered was sweet and sour chicken. They poured the sauce cold over the chicken making it get soggy immediately. The rice tasted like it had been previously cook and just quickly microwaved as it did not taste fresh.
