For Rockford this place is a 4 star establishment!! Pretty solid. (I won't tell you what it would be in my native Southern California) Got my standard: shredded beef taco, cheese enchilada, and rice. All were pretty tasty for this area. The chips and salsa were pretty good too. Great service! Nice booths! I rank this place above Cantina Taco. What a hidden gem. We stopped here early on a Saturday night and it was packed but they seated us right away. We had their Guac which was good. My hub had their chimichangas and I had steak/chorizo tacos. Both excellent. Service was top notch. I live in the neighborhood so I'm familiar with this place as I've been here many times but not lately. I'm not sure what has changed but right from the start, I ordered diet soda because I didn't want alcohol and server said "no diet soda". Didn't give an explanation. Therefore I ordered water. Then the entree I ordered didn't come with rice or beans which wasn't a big deal so I ordered a plate on the side and was very disappointed. Absolutely no flavor to rice and the beans were completely tasteless too. How disappointing! The flavor of the food has definitely changed and since I live near by, I noticed lately that the number of cars in parking lot have really decreased. I hope management reads reviews because I'd really like to see them be successful since they are a local business. Not sure I will be back. read more

My first reaction upon arriving was that it was a packed house on a Friday night! There was barely any parking spots left open. There's 2 entrances on either side of the building and the first time I walked in on the right side and didn't know where the hostess stand was and it was very crowded where the wait area/check out desk is. The space between booth and table is also very crowded! Our server was alright, she kept forgetting to bring us our waters, napkins and etc. but I'll give her a pass d/t it being busy that night. They give you chips and salsa to start off with and then we got the guacamole and fiesta dip and both were very tasty. I also tried the shrimp fajita quesadilla and that was delicious, it came with a side of rice, beans and a tortilla bowl of sour cream, guac, and pick. For drinks, I got a mango margarita which was good and a good size! Side note: If you want to upgrade to a patron margarita it's $16 for basically the same size! A little pricey in my opinion. My second visit here - I got the strawberry margarita and it was bright red as if the bartender dumped a whole bottle of syrup in my drink, it was waaaay to sweet and I didn't even drink it! I tried the chipotle chicken quesadilla this time and it had great flavor although it didn't come with rice and beans like the shrimp one did and I had to order it separately! P.S. they do have a dessert menu, it's not on the drink menu nor the food menu but it's on the kids menu. They had 5 options to choose from. Rockford Metro does have a fair amount of Mexican restaurants. Plaza Los Panchos is a worthy addition to the pack. Pros: -One of the friendlier serving staffs I seem to deal with. The servers always seem to have an extra degree of warmth, and the serving speed is adequate. They seem to be pretty good with carry out also. -The interior is incredibly nice. You can tell they put a lot of effort into it. Cons: -They are slightly pricier in respect to their competition. Food quality is good, but doesn't necessarily stand out versus similar establishments. -As much as I like the interior, it is TIGHT. Almost uncomfortable. This is a nit pick however. Bottom Line: -Glad to have this restaurant in the area. It is good, but not enough for me to go out of my way for. Several people disagree with me on that, so its possible I'm just weird. read more

Some of the best steak tacos I've ever had, and my margarita was delicious and strong, which is something I definitely look for when I pay $13 for a marg. I don't even know how it's possible but my left over steak taco was even better the next day! Kinda pricey but worth it. The only flaw with my experience at this place was our waitress, she must of been higher than a kite. She took our drink order then 10 mins later came back and said "sorry I didn't write it down and forgot".. like what ? That was just one of the few ridiculous things she said to us. We dined shortly after they opened. Seating was extremely congested, constantly getting bumped into. Service was very slow; we were in the building for over 2 hours. Food was decent Americanized Mexican. Maybe will try again after kinks are worked out. Update: tried it again, still 3 stars. food is ok but salty and overpriced. Salsa is bland with big chunks of onion. It's also so tightly packed. We may do take out next time. Service is passable at best with a lot if youngish servers. Also really dark! Turn up the lights. We also had the Fiesta Dip for an appetizer and that had so many fresh flavors and honestly I would have just been happy with that for my whole meal. Their chips and salsa surpass anything I've had in the area before. The whole menu looks unique and a slight twist on the usual Mexican cuisine. In town for the holidays and we wanted to try something new. My family normally have a go to spot for Mexican, but decided to check out this place. I remember when this was a fast food joint, but the interior now is totally different. We were impressed with the change. We were able to be seated quickly. For a Sunday it was pretty busy. They've several TVs around the restaurant so you can watch while eating. The menu is pretty extensive and has something for everyone. Lucky us, they had 5 dollar jumbo lime margaritas and 10 dollar fajitas for their specials that night. We were like sold! The husband saw queso and chips on the menu... needless to say we ordered it ASAP. The queso was pretty damn good. Not bland nor was it watery. Very addicting!! The jumbo frozen margaritas were strong and hit the spot. If I weren't driving, I would've had at least 1 or 2 more. Next time tho!! The chicken fajitas were massive. We honestly expected small portions considering it was the special. It was huge! The fajitas were outstanding. Lots of flavors and super tender. My mom and husband finished theirs. I only had room for half of it. Gotta save room for dessert!! The churro dessert we ordered was to die for. The dessert came in a huge cup with ice cream topped with caramel along with 4 churros. We could not wait for this place to open and we were not disappointed! Although we just stopped for an appetizer and margaritas, the margaritas, a frozen lime and a pineapple one that taste like pina colada were delicious and the fiesta dip was a cheese dip with ground beef, chorizo, tomatoes, onions and peppers served with a side of chips, which was also good. They waitstaff were attentive and the complimentary salsa was perfect with the right amount of heat. The furniture is adorable, with its name carved into the table and the back of the chairs.
