Awesome Mexican restaurant in Charles city. Doesn't look like much on the outside, but its a whole different story on the inside. Decorated beautifully. Clean and open. We were instantly greated with a friendly hello and smile. Service was fast as we were seated in a booth and were given our menus right away. Fresh salsa and hot chips came soon after as a complimentary side. I decided on a express chicken burrito and my other half decided on a chicken quesidilla. It seemed like it only took 5 min and our food was already served. Hot and fresh. My burrito was big. It was stuffed with chicken and rice and topped with fresh lettuce and tomatoes. There was a layer of sauce on top with a slight cumin flavor. The shredded chicken was moist and had a wonderful Mexican seasoning that enhanced every bite. It was perfect. My other half loved his quesidilla. It was simple but very tasty. No complaints. Again, service was super fast and friendly. I would definitely visit here again If I were passing through. read more

This place should be the standard for all restaurants. You're seated quickly when there's room. The staff is friendly and very attentive. Your food comes out quickly and it is the best Mexican food I've had, and we winter in southern Arizona if that tells you something. They could learn from this restaurant down there. read more

Do not stop here. I ordered the fajita salad. The lettuce was old, stinky and brown. I was made to feel like I shouldn't have brought it to their attn but I didnt want to get sick. They made me pull my ckn off and took the salad portion away. I was offered no more dressing abd the salad they brought did not contain any of the ingredients except lettuce. No egg, no avocado, no cheese, no tomato. The waitress suddenly could not speak english. I guess I was in the wrong for not wanting to get sick on old brown lettuce so was punished. Love this place. Food is always good. It is alway hot when you are given food. Service is always good.

Fast service. Attentive service. High marks for these two aspects. The menu was extensive, but prices were fairly high versus what you expect to find in the typical Mexican restaurant. $30.00 plus tip with no drinks and one appetizer and one entree seemed about $10 too high. But the biggest problem? All the food was absolutely BLAND. No flavor ...no spice...even the salsa and chips were plain and devoid of taste whatsoever. I have eaten Mexican food across the USA and have never had a more flavorless meal. I was shocked to find Mexican food that had not one shred of flavor - just bland, bland and more bland. Won't ever go back to this restaurant. If you're looking for some Mexican food with some hot, flavorful spice - don't come in here. You'll be disappointed. read more

The first time I visited I got the one of the combination platters which was 2 beef enchiladas and a hard shell beef taco with a side of rice and it was amazing. The price is well worth the portions you get. Another great dish is the fajita quesadilla which takes up half the plate! Very tender chicken in the quesadilla and very flavorful. The staff is nice and always very helpful. They are quick to clean dirty tables and send out food. Overall a great place and I will continue to eat there! read more

The food is always tasty, but some of the fillers they using in different dishes is kind of weird, and unlike any other Mexican restaurant I have every been to. Arrived around 1730 and grabbed a table right away. We had ordered and received our food within 30 minutes of our arrival. The food was delicious and the portions were quite large. Finished the whole thing while barely taking a breath in between bites. I ordered the #10 (enchilada and taco with beans and rice) and it was flavorful and satisfying. Three stars seems about right, although I may be shy a star. Goodness knows I absolutely MOWED through my piccadillo burritos and slurped down my wickedly thirst-quenching Macho. And I wasn't starving. I'd already had a pork fritter for lunch. Staffed entirely by actual Mexicans, and with a kitchen staff that probably shares that demographic, Plaza Mexican is at least as good as the Mexican restaurant of choice in Seattle, Azteca. Minor quibbles include the chips and salsa - stale-ish chips were sort of a let-down - and the flour tortillas the kitchen turns out. I'd be VERY surprised if they weren't packaged. Kudos for a wide selection of food, including hamburgers for the less-adventurous, and a mega kick-a$$ specialty drinks menu. And for basic family-style Mexican food, Plaza Mexican does a fine job. They're clearly tailoring to Iowa tastes - nothing's *hot*, for instance - but the portions are generous, the food is fresh, the front-of-house staff on the night we went were all young and almost touchingly sweet, and we had a really good time. Plaza Mexico is a great choice for dinner in Charles City. The chips and salsa were good, chips warm and fresh. We got the cheese dip, could have been larger, but still excellent. Tried the seafood burrito, this is kind a big so go hungry, just regular shrimp in it not fajita style, scallops were good in it though. The service was excellent. (example...never had Parmesan cheese come standard on a burrito in Mexico) That being said it is very good for a wider variety of customers than true Mexican food would be.
