Very typical diner-breakfast-all-day kind of place. The cafe truly has a following and was very busy on the Saturday before Mother's Day. We were able to get a table pretty quick though. I had the Rueben. It was good with Thousand Island dressing served on the side. Crinkle cut fries were OK. Others had the Club Croissant (which was served on croissant bread instead of a traditional French croissant) and the burger. Burger looked pretty pedestrian but the diner in question enjoyed it. She said the coleslaw was "nothing to write home about" but that the cowboy beans were really good. Our waitress and the rest of the staff were amazing. I loved that they had jello as a side dish. The neighboring table got it and the day's variety was blue! :) It came with a dollop of whipped cream and it made me want to order it. Very busy but got seated right away. Server was awesome and very nice! I got the beef and noodles special and it was delicious! My daughter got a bacon cheeseburger with mashed potatoes. This place was wonderful. Don't let the full parking lot keep you from coming inside. They were polite and service was surprising fast. The food was excellent. Because I was fighting a cold, I ordered a poached egg and banana cream pie. The poached egg was overdone and while the pie looked delicious, the meringue left something to be desired. Driving in this part of rural Iowa, finding a place to eat (other than fast food chains) is a challenge. On our way to Mayo, this was the only option for miles. It is comfort food in a typical roadside diner. Nothing to write home about, but it is exactly what you expect. They serve the typical Midwestern fare without any flourish. The staff is friendly and the service is quick. I would not drive out of my way to visit, but Klunder's is reliable if you are on the road and hungry. read more

PIE REVIEW.... Great breakfast at a reasonable price, but the lemon meringue pie was HORRIBLE. We have gone there a few times for breakfast and breakfast is always really good, but last Saturday I tried their lemon meringue pie and it was the worst pie I've ever had in my life. The meringue tasted like they put salt instead of sugar & the lemon itself did not taste like lemon it was horrible. The pie filling was more of a custard looking filling and had little to no lemon flavor and looked like it was separating. read more

Excellent home town cafe. We have been traveling and prefer. to visit local establishments. This has been our best stop for breakfast. We had breakfast at a HyVee a few days ago and paid over $30 for breakfast. We spent less than $25 at Klunder's and it was a better breakfast. In a time where most restaurants have trouble with staffing, Klunder's was well staffed and very efficient. meals were fresh and delivered in a timely manner. Our server was Anna and she was very pleasant! HATS OFF TO KLUNDER'S FOR A GREAT JOB!!! read more

Definitely worth the stop if you are on the road and want to eat fast without the usual fast food. Pies are homemade daily! A large variety of them was offered. The menu is extensive, includes lots of eggs, biscuits, chicken, fried steak, and other southern choices. Outside it looks like a pretty chicken coop, busy place, but extremely fast service. While traveling to Missouri from Minnesota, we stopped North of here to get gas. We asked the station attendant where was a good sit-down place to get some lunch, that wasn't a fast-food 'chain'. She said about 15 miles down the road is a larger town and they have Klunder's. Cool I said, so that is where we went. Good comfort food, western/cabin like decor, good prices. Reminded me of a Country Kitchen a bit. Perfect spot to stop, relax, have a cup of coffee and a good meal and head on your way. The wait staff was super friendly and our server made witty banter with us which was fun! She had some great recommendations too. If I'm ever in New Hampton, IA again, I would definitely eat here again. read more

We were just going to have something quick and get back on the road. Walked in and their specials board caught our attention. My husband had the meat smothered in onion and mushroom gravy, green beans and homemade potato salad. It looked great! My husband said it was very good. I had the grilled chicken spinach strawberry salad. It was delicious! Best I have ever eaten! We wanted to have their bread pudding, we thought as good as everything was the bread pudding must be fantastic- but we were too full to try it. There will definitely be a next time. Literally one of the best breakfasts on the road we have ever had! We do a ton of driving and this one has been a stand out. Monster huge portions, fast service and those cinnamon roll pancakes!!! Really impressed by the food! Everything is obviously homemade- and so tasty! My husband chose the spot for its all-day breakfast and the Haystack more than met his desire for a hearty brinner. My youngest and I shared the Horseshoe- a layered delight of hamburger and French fries atop Texas Toast and smothered in gravy. Delightful! By sharing we saved room for dessert... the waitress will have a huge list of offerings that aren't on the menu. Try something new- it's sure to be delicious. read more

I wanted to order an omelet and get 2 strips of bacon on the side instead of a pancake that came with it (or muffin, toast, etc) because I do not eat carbs. The pancake & strips of bacon were the exact same price on the menu. But I was told I could only do that for an extra charge. Why? They were the SAME price. So food was wasted & thrown away because my husband got my side & couldn't finish it all. And I was not completely full because I did not get a side. read more

SETTING: Pics on the walls of some of New Hampton High School's graduating classes from the 1960s, a case full of homemade pies at the counter and full of charming locals. FOOD: Breakfast all day and its very Iowa with lots of hash browns, farm fresh vegetables, meats and cheeses. The "loaded taco" salad with a red basil shell added a zesty edge to an otherwise ordinary dish. Note: I shamefully report that we were too full to try any of the pies, which includes cinnamon ice cream. Most everyone else, however, was digging in and they were large servings. (Next time we will grab some for the road.) SERVICE: Fast and friendly. COST: Completely reasonable, our lunch for two was around $13.50. read more

The food was amazing, and the price is great. I still can only rate this 3 stars for 2 reasons. 1. There is no changing table in the men's room. This is the first restaurant I have been in with my 5 month old son that doesn't have one and this is unacceptable. 2. I witnessed one of the busboys walk out of the restroom without washing his hands. I understand he does not handle food, but this is still disgusting. read more

Excellent small-town local restaurant, where it is obvious that the staff knows and loves most of their customers. This was my first visit en route to Rochester, but felt as welcome as their regulars. Thank goodness I ordered HALF of a Hot Beef Sandwich. It was hot, and plentiful for any appetite; especially if you save room for home made pie. Coconut cream was awesome. The crust was thin and delicious. The filling and meringue was thick and fabulous. Right next door is a Kwik Star that is very clean and a great place to load up for the road. Lots of healthy fresh snack items. This diner food is pretty good! For someone like myself who is not from the Midwest though all these hamburger restaurants that seem to be a monopoly for restaurants in many of the towns here makes one prone to eating too much of these kinds if things which is fattening and unhealthy and I already have enough 'fattening' on me as it is. Nevertheless Klunders has very yummy Cheeseburgers and Coleslaw and the pies sure looked good but I held off on that. This place is right near the bypass so it should be easy for most travelers who are going around New Hampton to go ahead and exit off for a hamburger. Besides the cheeseburger I had a taste or the pork tenderloin sandwich that my partner had and it too was quite tasty as well. Go ahead and stop in here! read more

My husband and I took a road trip from Cali to Iowa last October. On our trip we visited his two grannies and they took us here for breakfast!! We loved it!!!! Friendly staff great menu and a great breakfast!!! I always hate when you go to a diner for breakfast and they give you a tiny amount of hashbrowns!!! Not here the whole plate was hashbrowns and all the rest was on top. YUM :) While looking over the menu for what I was gonna have for breakfast I noticed they served apple pie with CINNAMON ICE CREAM!!!! I am cinnamon crazy! So after we ate, even tho we were stuffed, hubby and I shared a scoop of ice cream. I sware it was the best ice cream I have ever had!!!! It was amazing and had so much cinnamon taste and I wanted to bring lots home with me but I don't think it would have done so great in the car on the drive back to Cali, LOL ;) read more
