What a cool little shop! I spotted this shop the other night, but didn't have time to go inside . I've had my eyes on these coconut roll cookies for the past few months, and this little shop had it! I finally stopped by today and got them for $3! The shop is small but cute, they have many different products here and the price is amazing compared to the other shops in elmhurst. The coconut roll cookies were very tasty, and it's technically gluten free. I will definitely be stopping by here again for these cookies ! read more

The owner is super friendly and tells you about the various products and how they do it in Thailand. We've been here many times. They've got hard to find Thai products and several fresh, locally made food like fried banana or banana wrapped in a banana leaf with rice. I come here to find concentrated liquid coffee with sugar that looks like a tall glass bottle. You can make your own Thai iced coffee with it at home with condensed milk or plant based milk. Support your local Thai community. Products are inexpensive, and It's fun to shop here, and she's got a cute kitten, too. read more

I have tried for YEARS to make pad kee mao (aka drunken noodles) at home. Me and my best friend both tried researching recipes online, tracking down hard to find ingredients, all to no avail. But tonight was different. Tonight, I did something great. The culinary powers that be smiled down upon me and a beautiful thing was the result. And it's all thanks to the lovely owner of this business. I had gotten up early on a Sunday and made it to Wong Kwong Hop for the fresh rice noodles, which was her first question when I walked in with my shopping list stating I was going to try my hand at the recipe. This store doesn't sell fresh rice noodles, you'll have to go elsewhere. I went to Hop, but she may be able to give you a source that's closer and also open to the public on weekdays. What I did buy from her was Golden Mountain sauce, fish sauce, oyster sauce, rice vinegar, palm sugar, Thai chilies, and holy Thai basil. She was so sweet and helpful, she even snapped my photo with some of the ingredients! She asked me where I had gotten my recipe, and I told her (knowing it was the wrong answer) the NY Times. She laughed and shared with me a recipe from a book she has, and let me take a photo. I ended up combining the two recipes to create something magical. Without her guidance I don't think I would have gotten such a phenomenal result. I also bought some green tea ice cream, a Tom Yum ramen package, and basil flavored Lays. They also have prepared food that you can take and heat up, drinks, frozen Thai ice teas, candy, and a small seating area. It's like a cultural education center, so great to have this in the neighborhood. And they're open late! They owner says she'll sometimes stay open till midnight. I love this store! I was in search for Holy Basil or Thai basil because I wanted to make Pad Ka Prow at home. I went to other Thai stores in Woodside and Elmhurst initially and none of them had fresh herbs so I decided give this shop a try. The place didn't look like much, but the owner is very sweet and provided me with a big bunch of fresh Thai basil from behind the counter. Although Holy basil was my first preference, she was out of it and told me to call her next time I need it and she will try to save some for me. She also gave me advice on how to make Thai food. I will definitely be going back to get some more items so I can cook more Thai food at home. read more

I found this place courtesy of Rich W. My roommate was looking for Thai Basil and found it here! This grocery store is small and hold lots of hidden treasures. The lady who owns the store has a lot of knowledge and has a very matter of fact attitude... could be interpreted as Asian Tiger Mom type. She was trying to be helpful and gave my roommate (non-Asian) a lesson in cooking with Thai Basil. Hahaha! Just smile and nod your head until she is done talking, that's the respectful way (as taught by my own mother). If you're looking for some weird Thai stuff, you shall find all of them here. Let me name a few: Holy Basil, Canned Black Mushrooms, Thai Bird's Eye Chilies, Fermented Crabs, Frozen Cockles, Frozen Rhizome, Turkey Berry (Solanum), Mortar and Pestle set and so on... And what I found today was the Water Minosa, a plant with white spongy air-conducting tissue that gives stems floating in water. I bought it and still have no idea what to do with it. Lol The owner is very friendly. Some stuff sells out fast, so you might wanna call ahead to check its availability. Too bad this place is cash only and a little pricey. read more

I should be clear that I am not reviewing the products or quality of food that you can purchase here - this store clearly stocks authentic Thai products and is valuable for cooking. Unfortunately, my experiences here have been extremely poor due to the owner. After my third visit, I decided that I feel personally unwelcome at this grocery store due to the owner's attitude (and in my case, her berating comments). This was further worsened by her clearly preferential conduct towards other customers that she took a liking to, for whatever reason. This includes my husband, and others who just walked into the store (not acquaintances). I do not feel comfortable ever going back to this grocery store; instead I will take my business to Three Aunties - which though further away, has always been extremely kind and welcoming to me. They also carry great, authentic Thai products. ** Finally - I should note that she has questionably covid policies. While there is a sign that says "only calls for pick up", she had three additional *unmasked* customers in her tiny store at the same time as my husband and I. There could not have been more than 1-2 ft distance between each of us. read more

With the suggestions from the owner I made chicken laab for the first time and it was delicious. It took about 15 mins to make and all I needed was ground chicken, mix, fish sauce, mint and shallots. So good! Tell the owner what you want to make and she will tell you what to buy. read more

This is THE mecca for Thai groceries. Over the past few years the number of purely Thai markets have been on a steady decline (with only The Sugar Club and Bangkok Market really left). Fortunately, Thai Thai - formerly known as "Ally's" exists. Okay, it looks like an over-stuff, disorganized shack from the outside BUT this means that there's practically everything you would want inside. Fresh/Frozen groceries: Check. Fresh food made daily: Check. Heck, you can even get your hands on a fresh kaffir lime plant here! Make a stop here on weekends and you can get your hands on delicious Thai-style fried bananas and taro (freshly fried across the street at Ayada http://www.yelp.com/biz/ayada-thai-elmhurst ) for $5 a box. Tucked into an unassuming storefront amongst some of the best Thai food in New York is this hidden adventure. The store is packed to the gills, and it's worth poking into every nook and cranny. There are pantry staples (if your idea of a pantry staple is curry paste, dried bean noodles, and canned rambutan), flavored noodles packages, snacks, even prepared food. The owner is delightful and more than willing to answer questions. In the winter the fresh produce is non-existent, but the jars and cans pack enough of a punch to last you through hibernation. Came here after a brief brunch from the new Steam Place nearby looking for Fresh green Chiles & Kaffir leavesI need for a recipe. First the place was a mess...I have to ask the lady where everything was, & she looked annoyed & rude. I don't know if she owns the place or was a hired help but definitely has an attitude problem. My sister who has a lot more patience from me noticed it right of the bat. As a non Thai looking for ingredients for a Thai dish she should have been more helpful. They happened not to have what I needed but ended up buying some home made desserts which turned out pretty good . I probably would go back there again for some of the fresh ingredients I might be needing in the future & just have to deal with her ...I don't know if because of her inability to speak English well or just plain rude...Anyway, I do not know of any Thai grocery around so I just have to keep on going there..That's all. read more

Totally not what I expected but in a very good way. I walked in expecting the usual Asian grocery store with shelves of items and lots of produce. Thai Grocery is more of a hole in the wall that sells... all types of stuff. I wish I had more time to browse around, but I was on a pad see ew mission. There's lots of candy, snacks, ready to prepared food, freezers full of all kinds of fishy treasures, condiments, etc. Though the space is pretty tight and looks unorganized, I'm pretty sure the lady behind the counter knew where every single thing was. I was on a hunt for fresh rice noodles to make pad see ew. The shop-owner kindly informed me that they don't carry those noodles as it's a fresh item. After spreading some Thai knowledge on the noodles (they should be bought in the morning so they're fresh), she even gave me directions to another grocery store nearby to further along my pad see ew quest. I picked up a bottle of delicious, sweet soy sauce (a huge bottle for $3.25!) and I was on my way. I will definitely be back - whether it's to search those freezers or just to chat and get schooled on Thai food from the helpful lady. read more

Thai Thai grocery is one of my favorite places to shop in New York. They carry all sorts of great Thai treats, homemade sauces and my favorite khao soi paste. I cook a lot of Thai food but didn't grow up with it so I'm always learning about new ingredients. The owner is very sweet and approachable. I recently returned to this small Thai grocery store on a Sunday with friends and had some outstanding fried crispy bananas (actually plantains) with sesame, just like the ones you can get in Thailand from street vendors. Delicious! In this case they are sourced from nearby Ayada. A box of them is $5 and very filling. It's well worth it. They also carry interesting frozen treats including exotic Thai ice cream flavors from Sky Ice in Brooklyn. The friendly proprietor shared some excellent green tea with us as well.
