Mogmog is a small Japanese market filled with a variety of Japanese ingredients. Street parking is a little tricky but if you need niche products, you will find them here. They have colorful selection of ready-to-eat meals whether you want sashimi, a hot bento, soup, or onigiris. We were able to snag some boxes of Hokkaido uni and fresh wasabi! They have a small seating area outside so you can eat your meal/snack outside. I can't wait to return!

I came here later on a Sunday afternoon. The place is smaller but clearly a cute part of the neighborhood. They had a good amount of sushi and poke bowl options even for end of the day. They additionally had a lot of great packaged snacks and sweets, only thing I wish there was more of was some frozen treats (it was a hot day, what can I say?). My poke bowl was really good, the price definitely matches the quality, but I wouldn't say you're getting a deal or anything. Definitely would recommend stop in and try some things out.

Small but mighty Japanese grocery store with great selection of fresh foods and packaged groceries. My favorite was the salmon bowl - so fresh and perfect to take nearby for a picnic in the park. I also bought rice crackers (senbei) that were probably the best I've found in the U.S. and I was not able to find it online so I will be back to repurchase!

Finally was able to swing by after seeing so much online about this grocery store! I got the chirashi bowl and the salmon bowl, both of which were delicious. They were continuously putting fresh sushi out, even though I came at an off peak hour, which I really appreciated. Great assortment of other items as well outside of just the sushi, and they even had testers available! I'd definitely come back again - so glad there's something like this in the area.

I tried MOGMOG a month ago and now I want it all the time. The shop is curated and organized very well- not too overwhelming. The chirashi/sashimi bowls are such high quality at such a reasonable/cheap price compared to everything else that's out there. They don't skimp on the fish in their bowls either. Their bento boxes come with such a variety of different fish cakes/veggies (pickled and not). Again, they really fill it with flavorful, nutritious food, rather than having it 50% rice like most other places. I'm really hoping MOGMOG sticks around for years to come and I can't wait for my next meal here.

I've been meaning to come try Mogmog after seeing all the food influencers rave about this spot. Unfortunately, I feel deceived. Plus, it's a trek for me to come out to LIC. The shop is tiny with some Japanese groceries along with ready-made sushi, bento boxes, onigiri, etc. They also have the famous $110 melon from Japan, wild. My friend and I got three things to share: Small Chirashi Bowl ($24), Small Kaisen Sushi Bowl ($38), and Mackerel Sushi ($8). Plus, we got a water and tea to drink as well. For the price, it was way more than I expected to spend at a convenience/grocery store for take-out food. I do blame it on the uni for probably making it pricier than it needed to be though, which I could live without. Plus, portions are pretty tiny. The sashimi is sliced very thinly and there's more rice than anything, especially the mackerel sushi. While I did like the chirashi bowl, it's nothing I'd come out of my way for. Quite frankly, I'd rather go to Ten ichi Market instead. It's the same product at a more affordable price. Plus, you get 50% off after 8pm there --can't get a better deal!

Dam you social media! Ever since some instagrammer put these guys on his gram, my visits have certainly been more crowded and agitating! LOL I used to shop for my sushi bowls in relative peace but now I'm rubbing elbows with those trying to get the freshest fish. Of course I'm well aware of the irony, here I am doing the same thing. Haha. This neighborhood favorite of Long Island City certainly deserves all the accolades and fame. I'm hopeful that the quality stays top notch and most importantly when I drop in for my sushi bowl that they don't run out because of the crowds! Haha The shop does provide a few more Japanese favorites for the pantry, it's no where near a Costco in terms of inventory but they may have a few Japanese favorites for your shelf.

One of the many things I love about living in NYC is many Japanese mini market type places - a mom and pop like this one along with the chain stores like Teso and Daiso. We have options to get our hands on imported treats. Although I don't live nearby, we saw an IG post about the quality of their sashimi and sushi and made us curious to make the trip. The store isn't that large, but has a good layout - rectangle shaped with an island refrigerated case of sashimi, sushi. The chirashi and bowls are beautifully presented. None come with wasabi or gari, but you can purchase them. We most likely purchased the most expensive bowl in the case - Premium Kaisen Sushi Bowl. We also got the Salmon Ikura bowl. I must say they were quality ingredients, but considering the price and that these are premade sitting in a refrigerated case in the future I would be more inclined to go to nearby Hibino to get a freshly made chirashi bowl. Going forward I would get the less expensive rolls or sashimi - I found the rice too cold for the premium i was paying. I have no complaints and in fact recommend the onigiri after trying the spicy roe one. Same goes for the Jumbo spicy chicken sandwich on a nicely made pineapple bun - a generous slab of chicken with lettuce tomato shredded cucumber, american cheese! and special sauce that reminded me of the one on a big mac. I thought this might be even better as a filet o' fish sandwich. There are little tables out on the sidewalk so you can eat your purchase there, but we opted to take it to my AC'ed home. If you are looking to get your Japanese market fix you will most likely be satisfied here.

Probably one of the best salmon & ikura bowls I've ever had. This Japanese grocery store offers an amazing range of grab-and-go options including chirashi bowls, sashimi, onigiri, and seasonal Japanese snacks you won't find elsewhere. The staff are friendly and efficient, and everything is packaged beautifully. Prices are fair for the quality. The East River is also pretty close -- you can grab your meal and take a short walk to Hunter's Point South Park or Gantry Plaza State Park for skyline views of Manhattan. It's a perfect lunch spot on a nice day.

Had to update my review because the kakigori is amazing! I've stopped by a few times this summer to order it and it's always so good. The strawberry is excellent and the peach is incredible. Still need to try the mango! Just note it takes about 15 mins for them to make it (very worth it).

Cool little Japanese store that also sells takeout food in the middle of the store mainly focused with rice balls and raw fish We got the salmon Salmon & Ikura Sushi Bowl, the mentaiko rice ball and they had a soup of the day we got as well i think it was like beef stew type shiii Great value for the food, it was fresh, nothing to complain besides maybe a lil rice heavy in the bowl. The rice ball tho actually was really good and had ample filling unlike mitsuwa and other onigiri places. Definitely a solid takeout sushi spot

This little Japanese grocery store is delightful and contains so many treasures. I came here one morning and got a soy sauce and a chirashi bowl. Both were really good. The store itself is pretty small so it can get crowded but everyone there was nice and helpful. Definitely a great place to get good quality fish and Japanese grocery items.

    Mia H.

Located in LIC, this shop sells an assortment of Japanese goods, ingredients, and to-go dishes. After recently going viral on TikTok, this spot has become pretty busy. I highly recommend to come here before lunch or on a weekday if you want to try one of their to-go bowls. There's also only seating outside. After passing by this shop so many times, I decided to swing by after a run and got myself their takoyaki. The takoyaki was flavorful, generous with the ingredients and garnishes, and crispy despite being in a container. Overall, pretty solid for to-go and I would love to come back to try their chirashi bowls or buy some Japanese ingredients!

You pick your seafood, choose how you want it prepared, and then sit back while the kitchen works its magic. It's easy to see why this Queens institution has developed such a devoted following. From the moment we walked in, the staff made us feel like we were guests at a family dinner rather than customers in a restaurant. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, creating the kind of atmosphere that makes you want to linger over your meal. The seafood was incredibly fresh and prepared perfectly. We shared an 8-pound snapper, wild-caught salmon, and shrimp, all cooked to perfection and seasoned just enough to let the quality of the seafood shine. On the side, we enjoyed crispy fries, a refreshing Greek salad, and rice, which rounded out the meal beautifully. There's something special about a place that keeps things simple and lets exceptional ingredients do the talking. Astoria Seafood delivers fresh, delicious seafood, generous portions, outstanding hospitality, and an experience that feels more like gathering around a family table than dining out. It's a must-visit whenever we're in New York, and we'll definitely be back.

Outdoor seating is limited and can get pretty hot, and the restaurant gets very busy, so I'd recommend going earlier. The line can go out the door, and the food can take a while to reach your table. We've been a few times, but our recent experiences with the service have made us less likely to return. On our last visit, there was only one waiter handling the outdoor tables, and he was clearly overwhelmed. He forgot our water and a couple of dishes, ignored us a few times when we tried to get his attention, and seemed annoyed when we asked for things. What really bothered us was that he complained about another table not tipping, then stopped us as we were leaving to tell us we needed to tip. We only had $20 in cash, and he told us it wasn't enough and that we should be tipping at least 20%. Considering parts of our order were forgotten and the service wasn't great, that interaction felt uncomfortable and inappropriate. Overall, the food and fish market experience are great, but the service can be slow and inconsistent. Definitely worth trying for the seafood, just don't go in expecting quick or attentive service.

We also had the fried soft shell crab sandwich with the side of Caesar salad. The sandwich was well balanced with the crunchy crab and herby aioli. The Caesar was light and refreshing. The fish and chips came with two fried filets of white fish and a basket of classic fries. The fish was lightly battered and flakey. The house made tartar sauce was a good complement to it. As soon as my friend arrived, we ordered a 1/2 dozen West Coast oysters, which were not on the happy hour menu, and several dozens of the HH East Coast oysters. Our server did an excellent job explaining the origin of the oysters as well as the specials of the day. The West Coast oysters were Kumamoto (California), while the East Coast selection were called Bad Boys (from Nova Scotia, Canada). Normally I'm a big fan of West coast oysters, but the Bad Boys were delicious! They were plump with a bold ocean brine & crisp finish. My friend also ordered a cup of clam chowder, which he thoroughly enjoyed. One of the best oyster HH spots I've come across, because it seems to be harder finding good ones lately. Would definitely come back to try the other seafood dishes.

It's a little overwhelming because there is definitely a lot of seafood to choose from. The fish selection looks fresh but they do have some previously frozen seafood like large prawns and lobster tails. They have the names of everything and the price per pound posted which can be a little intimidating because it's a bit expensive. We ordered a grilled branzino and asked for the large tiger shrimp. The staff behind the counter said it would be the ones without the head but when long at the sign, it said head on tiger shrimp so I was a little confused but we just went with it because we assumed the staff knew what they were talking about. We did also get the head-on large prawns. We asked for everything to be grilled and confirmed that they don't use butter or cheese or cream on anything and then we went upstairs to get a table. Upstairs by the window is nice because you can people watch on a good day. We asked the staff member if there were any butter or cream or cheese in the mezza or rice and she said no, so we proceeded to order those and also asked about the soup of the day. She told us it was a shrimp and corn soup and that sounded good so we ordered that as well. The mezza came and the babaganoush and moussaka were good. The lemon potatos were fine but other places have made it better. The tahini was tahini and nothing special. The soup came and we took a sip and it tasted like cream so we were confused because the staff member didn't mention cream when she was taking about it. We asked about it when another staff member came by to drop off the rice. The original staff member who helped us came back over and we asked her if there was cream in the soup. She told us that yes because it's a chowder and the chowder has dairy and told us that we ordered the soup. I'm not denying that we ordered it. My issue is that we specifically asked about avoiding dairy in other food menu items and she didn't even stop to mention that hey the soup of the day that you want is a shrimp and corn chowder and has dairy. She took it back but I felt like we were inconveniencing her because of her tone. The mains arrived shortly after. The head-on prawns came and then the branzino. The large head-on prawns were overcooked and a little rubbery. The branzino was a touch too lemony but that was probably my fault for squeezing lemon over it. The fish was firm and smooth. There wasn't a lot of flavor on either dish. By this time, our table is pretty full and one of the staff members came by with the tiger shrimp and he more or less just stared at the full table and then plopped the plate down right next to my husband's phone. We barely even had time to move plates around to clean up space for him, but I feel like they should have definitely looked a little harder because one of our plates was just full of bones and shells and could have been taken away which would have made room for the shrimp. They were also over cooked and rubbery. Throughout our meal, no one came to check on us once. At the end of the meal, I used my own hand sanitizing wipes and was a little puzzled that they don't give any to customers. We got the bill and were a little peeved that they charged us $3 to butterfly the branzino. We weren't told about that and we didn't particularly ask for them to butterfly it. There's individual hand wipes by the stairs and it's odd that staff don't bring them to you once you're ready to pay. Are customers expected to walk around with dirty hands to go grab the wipe by the stairs? It's definitely a one time experience and overall, I wouldn't recommend it for the poor service and seafood being overcooked and underwhelming.
