POGONIP Pizza in Santa Cruz is absolutely outstanding! From the moment the food arrived, you could tell everything was made with the freshest ingredients. Ryan Thompson, the owner, was there and greeted us with a friendly smile, and the staff was very accommodating. The atmosphere was fun, vibrant, and very clean. The Caesar salad was completely off the hook--the Parmesan, crispy bacon, and house dressing created the best Caesar salad I've ever had. Every bite was packed with flavor and truly one of a kind. The pizzas were just as incredible. I highly recommend the Wood Cutter or the Atomic Loving Pizza. Both are loaded with fresh, high-quality toppings and have amazing flavor. If you're looking for one of the best places to eat in Santa Cruz, this is it. POGONIP Pizza is easily one of my top recommendations and definitely belongs on anyone's "Top 10 Things to Do in Santa Cruz" list. We can't wait to come back! read more

Pizza was easily 5+ stars and some of the best on the Westside, but as many have mentioned - the wait was still rough. We had the Barking Dog and the Mushroom Hunter and both were spectacular, but after waiting almost a half hour (and seeing other people's orders come out first), I checked with the cooks and was curtly told "we're working on your pizzas" - no explanation or apology as to why they hadn't been working on our pizzas for the half hour before. That being said, we will certainly be back, and if they can get their logistics in order, I will happily make it 5 stars! read more

This pizza is wild, like in a good way, I ordered three pizzas today, the Woodcutters, the Barking dog and a good old cheese pizza. Who knew that pickles on pizza would the greatest thing ever!? I didn't, but now I do. The pickled veggies on the Woodcutters pizza were amazing! The crust is so awesome, thin and crispy, kinda chewy, but not in a bad way. I placed the order online for pickup, it was ready when they said it would be. I haven't been able to sit down in the space yet, but it looks cool from the outside, and they have a nice patio area. I believe you should go here and eat this pizza, it is a wonderful neighborhood pizza spot. I assume this pizza could bring about world peace, you should go and eat it! read more

Very positive experience at Pogonip. You can tell this pizza is high quality, with a really great crust. I was sad they weren't able to do half of one topping and half of another, so we ended up getting what they said was the most popular pizza, the High Street Local. I'm not sure I'd get that same pizza again, it didn't quite do it for me - next time I'd just stick with the plain. But I can tell they're able to make a dang good pizza. read more

Pogonip Pizza is a much needed pizza and beer joint walkable to UCSC and the upper west side! Stopped in for the soft opening and I am excited to come back to try more pizzas, beer on tap, and enjoy the laid back atmosphere! The place was super busy, but given that it was the 2nd day that they were open it is to be expected. The tables turned over fast and our party of four found seating very quickly. At the moment they only have cans and bottles of beer (as well as wine and soft drinks), but they have eight taps and the owner said that within a week they will have beer on tap! Pizzas had a thin crisp crust with a great flavor. We got the mushroom hunter and the sweetness. The mushroom hunter had a very tasty savory shroomy medley, though I would have liked more mushrooms on the pizza as a whole! The sweetness was a really unique pistachio, onion, and hot honey combo, but overall I could have done with more toppings and flavor. The vibe inside was very fun, the service was great, and I loved the mountain bike theme. (In addition to local made bikes on the walls, all of the specialty pizzas were named after local bike trails!). Really looking forward to returning to try more affordable pizzas, beers on tap, and their $4 soft pretzels! read more

Had dinner at Pogonip this past weekend during a fun trip to the Bay Area. Pogonip was a wonderful surprise for us - we had a variety of pizzas to try (pickle pepperoni really stands out) and they all were delicious! Crust had perfect crispiness and great chew. Sauce and fresh toppings were a bonus. Dining area is open and very welcoming and you can see the chef making pies in the open kitchen. Everything about this place was great, staff, food and atmosphere. Definitely head back here my next visit in the area! read more

Chef Ryan is a master a flavor combos. Unique flavor profiles you don't see, but also has tried and true pies classical pies. Service was great. Order at the counter and pizzas are sent out over the counter, where you get a nice view of kitchen action. Ambiance is casual with a local vibe. Bicycles are mounted on the walls which explain the inspiration behind the Pogonip logo. Came here for the first time last night after a ride at UC and was impressed. The pizza was delicious with lots of local ingredients and a good variety of pizzas. They have good beer on tap with some Fox shock coils for tap handles. The pizzas are named after local mountain biking trails and the place has some cool old bikes on the walls. It's got a good, friendly vibe and some outdoor seating which is a plus. The owner came by to ask how the pizzas were so it's nice to know they care and are open to feedback. We got the Mushroom Hunter which had tons of local mushrooms and Chinquapin which was a saag paneer pizza with slightly spicy curry. Both were really good. read more

Pizza was good overall. The dough was excellent. Soft and chewy, charred nicely. The crust was a little too thick compared to the amount of pizza topped section. Having something like some olive oil and seasoning on the crust part would have made that a little more appealing. Got two pizzas - the mushroom was my favorite. Umami and delicious. Also got the Magic Carpet. The jalapeños weren't hot (for me or my fiance) and it didn't taste like hot honey - so it was overly sweet for me. Thrilled that Pogonip pizza is officially open on the Westside. We live in the neighborhood and have wished a spot like this would open up. We came for the soft opening and had the mushroom hunter and the magic carpet. They were both phenomenal! We learned they'll be serving Woodhouse Beer and slinging a delicious menu of pies. Fabulous pizza that I dream about! So far I've had the Barking Dogs, Mushroom Hunter and High Street Local. Such delicious and different flavors, especially the house-made scallion sauce. I have come twice since they opened and had minimal waits for my pizzas. Staff and the two owners are super nice. This is the kind of pizza place that sticks with you. And I love how the names of the pizzas are homages to local Santa Cruz places/events. Already dreaming about my next visit: get the barking dogs again or try the Santa Carla???Maybe both with leftovers to take home! Keep up the great work PP! We are locals that live on the upper westside and were super excited when we heard they were opening a pizza place up here. We went in to the restaurant on three separate occasions and tried to place a to go order for a couple of pizzas, only to be told it would be an hour and a half to a two hour wait for a to go order! WHAT???... How can it possibly take two hours to cook a pizza??? Each time we went in the place wasn't even full. The staff is not very friendly or accommodating and the hours are super weird so we finally gave up. After being open for a couple months decided to give them one more shot. I called right when they opened to place an order for pick up. The guy who answered was again not very friendly and told me that they don't except phone orders, he asked how many pizzas I wanted and I told him just two so he agreed to let me order. Then I asked if I could also add two of their pretzels and he grumbled "I guess we can set a couple aside for you". What's even worse is that after he repeated the order back to me and I had to correct him because one of the pizzas were wrong, they still gave us the wrong pizza!!! The pizza itself was okay but nothing special. Even though there are better pizza options in town, I would've been happy to support them because it's convenient having a place so close to home. However, due to the unfriendly staff and lack of customer service we will not be going back. read more

My wife and I loved our experience here at Pogonip! Yes, they are a new restaurant in Santa Cruz, but by no means new to the industry. The pizza dough is very flavorful, chewy, crispy and delicious. Absurd!!!!! Hour long wait for them to tell us it would be 45 minutes for a pizza to come out! They didn't open the doors till 5:40 when they are supposed to open at 5:30 and already have the most difficult and annoying hours.
