I would have given Pogreba four stars but the service is really slow and the food takes forever so I had to give it 3. I have been to Pogreba twice. Both times were for lunch when the lunch rush was over (about 2:00). There was only two other tables in the restaurant but our food still took 45 minutes. We also had to wait for our drinks and drink refills. We had the beer battered bacon cheese curds which were good although I don't think the cheese is actually a curd. The mushroom burger was delish but the veggie sandwich was boring. All in all, the restaurants food is pretty good but the service is consistently slow, so I don't know if I will be back. read more

They got one thing right, atmosphere. Pogreba has a great environment. Unfortunately I stopped being impressed after that. I ordered the steak special on Saturday night. It was good, but I was disappointed with how fatty it was. I expected a much better cut from a restaurant like this. My wife ordered a ravioli with a lobster tail. She said it was "Nothing to write home about". After that we got our bill, and believe me, that was worth writing home about. I couldn't believe I was charged $9.00 for a can of beer. I would consider coming back if the prices were more reasonable, but I have better things to blow $100.00 on. read more

Very disappointed with service and food. I had dinner here with my fiance on December 6th. The service was very slow. I ordered a full-rack of ribs and when they came out they looked burnt. The meat was as dry as shoe leather. I only ate a couple of bites. Our waitress asked me if I wanted a box the take remaining ribs home and I said no. The bill was $132 including 1 bottle of wine and tip. After we paid the waitress asked how we liked our meals. I told her the ribs were dry and she commented "oh thats to bad". This was our first time at the restaurant. The atmosphere was nice. That's about all I can say that is nice. The service was slow. The food is over priced for the low quality that you get... My boyfriend ordered the prime rib, one of there specials that night. The cut was too thin, over cooked and a 1\3 was just fat. I had the seafood ravioli. If was nothing special. I would not recommend this place to anyone. We will be going to the Freight house next time we want a perfectly cooked prime rib or seafood. read more

When I asked a local bartender at a pub downtown La Crosse, he recommended this restaurant (he advised he used to work there). I am not from the area and wanted a nice dinner for the evening. We called that afternoon for dinner reservations and there were available openings. As we walked in we were directed to the bar to wait for a table even thought the restaurant was mainly empty. We had a drink and continued to wait. After a while, I became impatient and had started walking to the hostess before my significant other told me to wait. Immediately she noticed our displeasure and came to tell us our table was ready. As we were seated, we noticed that every other table seated was also in the bar previously to being sat. We ordered the specials of the night which were prime rib and stuffed chicken. The prime rib was tender, but didn't have much flavor. The chicken and the pasta/pesto it came on top of was good. I liked the light flavor of the sauce. Overall I give the food a 6/10. The server we had was attentive and upbeat. The main reason I gave this rating was the first impression of waiting for a table when there was clearly openings. I am reviewing Pogreba's Catering. My husband and I recently were married in the La Crosse area. We currently live in Chicago, so planning our wedding long distance posed a challenge. Finding our venue was a no brainer (Norskedalen Nature and Heritage Center) although finding our cater was a big question mark. After a few failed attempts to contact some local caters I was directed towards Pogreba's. Having been a waitress in the La Crosse area for 6 years, I had never heard of Pogreb'as. Come to learn, it was a new restaurant (post my move to Chicago) but the catering business had been around for years! My first attempt to contact Pogreba's was responded promptly with enthusiasm and information to guide my searching. Josh, the owner of Pogreba's, was INCREDIBLE with communication. This was the largest appeal to working with them as our wedding cater. He offered menu modifications, collaboration to meet our food desires, photos of plates, glasses and silver! If you are a bride who plans visually, this helped me visualize my tables! He also didn't try to pull the wool over our eyes, he was straight forward with cost and didn't surprise us in the end with unexpected costs! I could go on and on about Josh's excellent communication it was truly wonderful! T he food .... oh the food!! First off, we were offered a free food tasting of everything we had selected for our wedding menu. (So fun!) Our guide of the dinner, Ester, was a doll and very educated!! This experience eased my concerns about planning long distance, as I knew we were in good hands. Low and behold it was finally our wedding week. Josh was excellent at checking in, first off asking me how I was doing! Great way to start a conversation with a bride-to-be! Josh was excellent with arranging set up of our tables, bringing high chairs to our venue, and even brought an extra bottle of booze because we ran out right away! I heard over and over from our guests that the meal was the best wedding food they had ever eaten - meat option and veggie option! All in all, we couldn't have asked for a better cater and want to recommend them to everyone to consider them as their wedding caters! You will not be disappointed and it will also not kill your budget! Our wedding menu was as follows: - Salad with red onion, goat cheese, beets and an onion vinaigrette - Assorted buns with herb whipped butter - Pork Ribeye - Sauteed Kale - Loose Corn - Roasted Baby Red Potatoes Also, we had a late night snack - single servings of pulled bbq chicken sliders and brats with sour kraut!! read more

We went for lunch at this renovated spot, and enjoyed ourselves. The interior is beautiful, though it was confusing which door to enter! The service was fast, and the waiter was courteous. My companion enjoyed the vegetable and rice soup, and we both ordered the steak and avocado melt without buns (gluten issue on one side, preference on the other). The food was tasty, though the sandwich should have been labelled as "blackened" on the menu. I was expecting a grilled meat, and while it tasted good, it wasn't what I was hoping to eat. I have been to the restaurant at least a half a dozen times since the beginning of May when it first opened. I have watched it grow into a first class dining experience for lunch and dinner. The atmosphere and decor is warm, charming and quite exquisite for this city of fine eateries. The friendly servers and bar tenders add a very pleasant and welcoming touch to this already superb eating experience. The food is fabulous! Both lunch and dinner menus are unequaled in the area. My lunch fav is the Pogreba Club and it is hard to beat the Ribeye Steak and Prawn De Jonghe choices for dinner. They are very uniquely seasoned and prepared to perfection. The bacon wrapped cheese curds are the hottest item in town, but I also enjoy the Kabobs for appetizers. Sometimes my wife just has appetizers for dinner. The 16 tap beer choices poured into a frosty mug provides a great selection to compliment any entree. I have personally witnessed the growth in the area of service at Pogreba and sense a great commitment among staff that customer care is top priority. The spee of service and servers knowledge of the menu has greatly improved since the early days. I have never experienced a longer than average wait fgor either lunch or dinner and have been there at busy times and not-so-busy times. And who cares with 16 choices of tap beer to sample!? We ate here for the first time and came away impressed. It's on the north side, not usually the area we go for dinner but decided to give it a try. The restaurant is really nice with the high ceilings and decor. The beer list is extensive, I didn't really review the wine list. The service was very good. The food was also good, we did get an appetizer, Pork Belly Confit, which was excellent. For dinner we got Blackened Salmon and Fiery Tomato Pasta. Both were good. My salamon was very good, my wife's past was pretty average she said. Salad/dressing were unique and the beef brisket chili I had was good. Overall it was a good expereince if you're looking for something different in the mid to upper price scale. I went with a group of 6 for dinner on a Friday night. Everyone was very knowledgable and courteous from the time we were seated until the time we left. The food was amazing and affordable. My steak was cooked to perfection and the appetizers we shared as a table were delicious. The pork belly app was particularly good. I liked that the owner came by our table and asked how everything was and he was very polite. Good experience overall at Pogreba. The service was great! The appetizer and deserts were fabulous. Had the risotto fritters and some type of honey cake. Where the experience descended was in the middle with the entrees. My wife's shrimp was "shrimpy". Very little food for the amount and the quality. My ribeye was blackened even though the menu nor the server indicated it came blackened. Or at least I hope it was blackened and not just carbonized accidentally. Either way it wasn't that good and I definitely wouldn't have ordered that entree had i known it would be blackened. But overall a decent experience. Not great, but decent. read more

My friends and I have dined together at Pogreba a couple of times now. I go there because the décor is nice and until tonight the food has been good. We met for happy hour and dinner a few nights ago, and after perusing the menu, chose their spring pasta made with orecchiette, pancetta and peas with chicken. The pasta was to be orecchiette. Instead, what I got were medium sized pasta shells. Let's face it, I could have made this dish myself at home for a fraction of the cost. It was dry (no moisture at all) and not very flavorful. What a hidden gem! My partner and I were skeptical, as from the outside it doesn't appear to be the most welcoming place. We weren't sure if we could park in the lot across the street or not, the entrance was confusing,,, but once we made it inside, we were sold. The interior is beautiful... and to be honest, we felt under-dressed, but the hostess made us feel so welcome that we let that slide. We were seated in a very romantic booth, and greeted shortly after by what we can only describe as the most gracious, professional server either of us has ever had. He introduced himself... Perry? Barry? He laughed and said it was Barry. Maybe he picked up on our nervousness, but his response to my partner's commenting on how under-dressed we felt and not hearing his put us IMMEDIATELY at ease... he simply said something like "meh. I don't care about that... people don't dress up to eat anymore... why spill sauce on an expensive outfit?" That alone put us at ease. His description of the specials was impressive... how someone can make Green Beans sound so delicious. When we had questions he couldn't answer, he was honest and said he would find out. And by god, he did. Once my partner put him through the "menu test" we were impressed with his knowledge of the menu... and asked for recommendations. Instead of just spouting off "what I like" or "what is popular" he actually took the time to ask what we were hungry for, or had a taste for that night. I was hungry for a Ribeye... but torn between that or the Prime Rib special... he pointed out the Prime Rib is only available on the night we were there... but my choice was also good... his description of the Prime Rib made me order it. My partner was more difficult... but he had the right answers... and even provided a special "dietary restriction" menu without batting an eye. The food was as delicious as promised. Seriously... you have NEVER had Prime Rib as tasty as this.... and as he promised, the Charcoal Grill is the key... My partner chose the Shrimp and Scallop Lasagne dish... planned to only eat half of it, but ended up eating it all. Not because of the portions, but because it was so good! As we finished, our server asked us if we were interested in hearing about dessert options. We were stuffed... but wanted to hear what they were... and loved that he pointed out that we could take it "to go" to go with the omelette I could make tomorrow morning with my left-over Prime Rib... We passed on dessert... but plan to make room when we come back, just from hearing the way he described them. We were looking for a special night out. It was a little more spendy than we were expecting. But, it was worth EVERY penny! We felt welcomed from the minute we walked in... the food was beyond what we expected. I really wasn't impressed at all. The prices were too high for the food quality that was actually served to us and the service reminded me of being at any old restaurant you could go to (was called 'guys', didn't seem clear of the menu) Not professional. They didn't look happy to be there at all. There was a bartender there that seemed SO in our face about sharing everything he knew about anything. It made us want to leave the bar area just to get away from him even though the hosts basically forced us into the bar first...only to buy overpriced drinks that weren't well made. Did I think it was as good as the price turned out to be? Definitely Not. We Decided to go on a really nice date my boyfriend and I and upon coming in we realized the place was completely dead and it was right smack dab in the middle of most other restaurants Dinner rushes. This was dead maybe 1 or 2 other tables came in after we did. Our waiter immediately took our Drink Orders and this man was soo sweet and helpful he made our night so splendid. He was just absolutely sweet and fantastic! We did decide on doing the 2 for $80 meal deal HOLY CRAP!!! $80 seriously? If we would not have done this deal however it would have easily been more than that probably. When our Waiter came back we decided to order. I ordered the Cappuccino Beef Tips with Asparagus and Mashed Potatoes and we also received a Side Salad. When our food arrived around 15 or so minutes they did look great! My Cappuccino Beef tips had real cappuccino bits in there which I was kind of thrown off by, it was ok but a little unsettling. My Mashed Potatoes, Veggies and Salad were great but my entree just was sub par. My Boyfriend also said his meal was no where near what he expected which was unfortunate because he was paying so much for this meal! We will definitely not be back just way to expensive, especially in the middle of northside La Crosse. When there are other cheaper but delicious restaurants around the area like North Country or even Senor Villa in the College area try one of those I recommend them more than Pogreba. read more

Went for dinner Friday night. The decor is very nice and the staff friendly. I ordered the rib eye steak, gorgonzola mashed potatoes, and salad. Friend ordered the scallops and shrimp. Steak was very good so no complaints about that. Friends scallops were barely cooked and shrimp was overcooked. Very small portions for the scallops and shrimp in relation to the cost. Salad or sides were nothing special. All in all it would have been fine if the price were $14-16. But we paid $24-26 per entree. Left knowing we would not return. We do not have any problem paying $26.00 for a meal but for that amount they need to do a better job with their cooking, portion, and sides. Wish I had more positive experience. read more

I would not recommend Pogreba. We went to dinner on a Thursday night and found the interior to be nice (minus the enormous flat screen tv with a fish screen saver...why?????) My wine was wonderful, but almost $9 for a glass. Good thing I ordered it, it was the only thing I "ate" all night. The soup was grainy and I think it had been frozen. The signature item I ordered was the Chicken Spinach Pasta and I just did not care for it. At all. So I turned my attention to my steamed vegetables only to find the carrots were so hard I could not even spear them with my fork. So, turned my attention back to my wine. And listened to the bride to be giving a very long and very loud speech upstairs, on her microphone for the entire restaurant to hear....and hear....and hear.....Our server was very nice. We wont be going back. For the money, go to Kate's on State, I wish we had. read more

We have eaten at Pogreba several times, but last night was VERY disappointing. The service was slow and when our food finally came it was cold. We sent both or our dinners back to be reheated and when they came back out, mine was STILL cold. Had to wait a long time for the waitress to come back and send it back again. My husband was completely finished eating before my dinner finally came out hot. The waitress and both of the people that delivered our food never said that they were sorry for the cold food and the slow service. This will probably be the last time we eat at Pogreba. read more

I've dined here twice now. The first time last year I was unable to get a glass of dry white wine. Everything was so sweet or by the bottle. I can't drink an entire bottle by myself and my dining partner was trying their beer selection which was good. Our food was acceptable and we hadn't returned until now. This time we were dining with friends at 8 pm. Our server was in such a rush it made us uncomfortable. He asked for our order 4 times after we got drinks in the span of 10 minutes. We were visiting and trying to enjoy a relaxed evening. We did order the pork belly confit with kimchi, it was good but quite a mess on the plate. We also had the margheritta flatbread which everyone enjoyed. Two people ordered steaks and they were perfectly prepared. Two ordered the seafood curry. We were told it was not spicy, which was correct. It was sweet. It was also so incredibly oily and heavy that we were unable to finish it. This is not a place that I need to return to but since I have one more $25 gift card I will probably try for a lunch. read more

Fantastic! The interior is beautiful with a large wall centerpiece which reminded me of Hells Kitchen. The booze and beer selection was as good or better than any of the "nice" places to eat in the area...and reasonably priced. The food was very good and the menu had a handful of selections that both my wife and I were excited to try. The food took a little time, but it is understandable since the place was packed. Plus, good food takes time (about 25 minutes)! Even though it feels like fine dining, there was a mix of people including business professionals and blue collar workers. Diamond in the rough! I had lunch at Pogreba Restaurant only 3 days after opening. I was immediately struck by the contemporary feel and art work. I am somewhat familiar with the location and found this a pleasant reprieve from the reckless fast food dining options and watering holes that populate that area. I think you would have to travel many miles from here to find anything on this level of elegance. For the food and experience I would drive a great distance to sample this dining treat. It was lunch and I was with a group of 3 others after playing golf. The beer was cold, and the wait staff above courteous. We sampled the avocado burger and loved it. We ordered 3 servings of the bacon wrapped cheese curds. I live in the South and you just don't find that there. I am planning to return as soon as possible, this time for dinner with my wife. The soft jazz music and intimate lighting make it a perfect place for a great meal, glass of wine and conversation. read more

I'm originally from the area and come back a couple times a year to visit family. For my "going away" dinner after a recent trip - I wanted to treat everyone to one of my favorite little luxuries - dining out! We decided to try Pogreba Restaurant and I'm glad we did. I wouldn't have expected this from the outside, but first impression was that that interior is airy, open and light. The restaurant is housed in an old church, so the ceilings are high and there are some stained glass windows for historic charm. Yet, it doesn't feel like you're in a restored church - it's clearly a restaurant space now. The tables are spaced just right and there are strategically placed partitions to give patrons a sense of privacy/intimacy. It's definitely the right environment to host a business meeting or have a date! Our first stop was the bar. It's a big space with cocktail tables as well. I was really impressed with the selection of beers and wines! A few of us opted for the specialty cocktails and they were great. (Blue cheese filled olive in my dirty martini? Thank you very much details!) We were content hanging at the bar for one round, but right at the point when we were all more or less finishing our drinks the host checked in on us to see if we wanted to be seated. I appreciated the attentiveness. We were seated in a large booth since we had five people in our group. (We were given the option of a table as well when I made my reservation.) We were immediately greeted by a server who took our drink order, listed off a comprehensive list of specials and endured my family's barrage of questions about 'levels of deep fry' and such. (I don't like things too greasy.) We decided on the bacon wrapped cheese curds and deep fried zucchini. Both were out to our table promptly and very delicious - with enough to go around for our large group. I was especially impressed with the zucchini - it was only lightly battered and I could actually see/taste the zucchini. (I was hoping it wouldn't be all deep fried crunch...ew...and thankfully it wasn't!) For the entrees, we had: --Bacon Steak & Scallops: Scallops were big and had a sweet glaze that was delicious. My veggies were done to perfection. The bacon was a lot of bacon...huge actually. I wasn't expecting that much so I shared - too much bacon for me and I might try the fresh diver scallops entrée next time instead - but for someone with a huge appetite for bacon, it would be great. The bacon was good...I just can't move past how much there was! --Two Ribeyes: Great cuts of meat. The men at the table had little to say once the food arrived (aside from "yes, I'll have your bacon). My dad is very picky about how his meat is cooked and they got it right, so compliments to them for that. --Fresh salmon fillet: My sister got this and gave me a bite. We agreed the salmon was fresh (not "fishy," as it can sometimes be) and a well portioned fillet. It's a simple plate - fish, veggies and the potato option but the artistic presentation with sauces and veggie placement made it special. --Lobster Ravioli: This was great. I normally wouldn't order ravioli because I think it's a little heavy - but this hit the mark. The lobster was rich, but portioned just right so that it didn't overpower the ravioli. I got a bite and would order next time - especially in the winter...a good comfort food! All entrees come with a choice of soup or salad, plus a potato or side. Two of us tried the gorgonzola and cavatappi - which you have to try once. I'm a staple baked potato girl and leave the "flashiness" to the entre so I could give or take on specialty potatoes - but they were really good, unique and I think the options offer a little fun to what would otherwise be something staple. Again, they're big on small details. Other impressions...our waiter was attentive and professional, but not pretentious as I sometimes find 'fine dining' servers to be. The space was immaculate and tables were bussed immediately. Also, I think the partitions helped with the flow of traffic. The restaurant was bustling, but I never felt like the business was interfering with my family's ability to carry conversation and enjoy our meal. (I don't like it when someone is brushing past my chair every three minutes.) I'm a Wisconsin girl at heart and will take my can of beer and brat on the parade route with the best of them - but it's nice to see fine dining options as well and Pogreba's is a great choice. This is my wife's new favorite restaurant. After reading the other reviews, i have to agree that the service could be a bit faster. I had never been to Pogy's, so I have nothing to compare the interior to. But it is very nice inside. The stained glass windows are quite pretty. It is quiet inside, even if there is a large party at the next table. I think they are still learning a few things here and there, and maybe sometimes it might be a bit pretentious - like no salt or seasoning on the table. But the wait staff are learning and always attentive. There's no snobby attitude anywhere. Everyone is nice. OK, now for the food. My wife loves the pork porterhouse. I have to say that it is really good. Yum! I have had the lobster ravioli with jumbo shrimp and it was also very good. We have eaten there multiple times and not been disappointed. I wish portions on some of the entrees were a bit bigger. It is pricey for La Crosse, and especially for the North Side. Expect to pay at least $20 for dinner, and upwards of $25 is more likely. I think the prices are about on par for some of the 'nice' restaurants downtown, or maybe a litle less. But I like the place. I even like the big screen TV with the endless loop of tropical fish in a tank. It is pretty relaxing. Summary: nice atmosphere. good food, good service, upper-moderate prices. If you want service, this place is not for you. We sat down at a table in the bar area and went up to the bar for some drinks. I ordered a vodka club soda with lemon. The club soda was flat. I let them know it was flat and asked if they could try again. They obliged after the bartender tried to impress us with his vast vodka/scotch knowledge. We sat there for about an hour and a half getting up each time for drinks, and listening to the bartender school on drinks each round(annoying) - really no problem getting up to get drinks at all, I mean the bar was only about 4 feet away, but there was only 2 other tables with people in the whole restaurant. But then a waitress came over (who knew we had a waitress!). We decided to order some food, and were forced to move to a booth. I knew immediately she wasn't going to get it right. How, you may ask? Because she didn't write anything down. I don't care how good of a waiter or waitress you are or think you are, write it down for crying out loud. I'm sure that even if you don't make many mistakes, you make more than if you had written it down. I ordered the seafood special with baked potatoe. It came out 15 minutes latter with fries, so I knew it wasn't just prepared, but reheated. It still tasted cold! I should have said something but it was about another 10 minutes before she came back, so I just ate some of it. The grand finale... since the vodka soda was obviously flat, I decided to try one of their signature drinks. I mean, how could that get messed up. We were one of 3 to 4 other parties in the whole restaurant..all parties of 4 or less; The service was very slow. We ordered appetizers, a couple beers and sodas, and entrees of steaks and pasta. The steaks were charred and dry on the outside. The pasta was non descript. The salad that came with it was your typical small house salad with nothing special about about. The bill for 2 was over $80.00 which seemed steep considering the meal was not particularly special. The atmosphere was very nice and comfortable. Doubt we will return. read more

Like others have said, Pogreba has a lovely atmosphere. We went on Valentine's Day, which was packed, and it still felt romantic with all the hustle and bustle. We ordered a bottle of yummy Moscato ($16) and even my boyfriend, the non-wine drinker, thought it was pretty good. For dinner, I had the chicken with spinach ravioli... it was super delicious. The flavor of the roasted red pepper sauce was unreal. It wasn't the most amazing dish I'd ever eaten, but I was quite impressed! Well worth the $17. The chicken in both of our dishes (he had the Chicken alla Carbonara, $18) was tender and juicy. We were too stuffed for dessert (neither of us could finish our plates), and I had already made some cupcakes for us at home, so we skipped it this time. The only thing I didn't love was the caesar salad. The greens were a tad bitter and the dressing skimpy, but the meal more than made up for it. (I was told there will soon be a $1.50 upcharge for the caesar, but the waitress was a newbie so I'm not sure if this is the case. It wouldn't have been worth the extra cost.) For a guy who usually just says "tastes like chicken to me" or "it was fine", my boyfriend thought it was pretty great, too. He's a fairly picky eater, so I was worried there might not be any choices for him (no chicken fingers here!), but even with the limited menu there were a few things he could choose from. The service was great, as well. As I've said, our waitress seemed pretty new, but she was sweet and helpful. Several of the other servers stopped to ask if we needed anything, also, even though it wasn't their table. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Other details... we had reservations so there was only a couple minutes of wait time before being seated. The wait time for our entrees was about average for most sit-down places we go, which was good considering how busy they were. They had several specials in addition to their usual (small, but sufficient) menu, including a steak topped with a bleu cheese crumble (can't remember the cut of meat), which all sounded scrumptious. Overall, I was thoroughly impressed with Pogreba. Even though it's a little more expensive than where we usually dine, we will definitely be going back to try some of their steaks, desserts, and cocktails.
