Watched Jack at the bar handle an unruly customer who order one specialty cocktail and complained about the $19.00 price. The customer then badgered Jack and swore at him but Jack did well to calm the situation and continue helping other customers at the busy bar. Even after being given a refund the unruly less than gentlemen continued to berate Jack instead of leave. Kudos to Jack cause I wouldn't have had that patience read more

Warning: Mice droppings everywhere including tables and dining room. July 18th visit. 8pm Out of town visitors and this place was recommended to us. Appeal was my partner wanted prime rib. Place is dim lit, has a vibe that is historic and old. Dining area is decorated with train decor and vineyard items. I had the teriyaki chicken. Chicken was on the dry side, a little more pineapple would have been nice instead of a 2x2ish block that was mostly core. Salad bar was basic, not a classic WI supper club salad bar. Lettuce, veggies and dressings. Prime rib was reportedly decent. Nothing over the top. Waiter was asked several times to bring horseradish until my partner just got up and went to prep kitchen by salad bar and got it himself from an employee. Waiterstated that his other tables kept him busy. It's wasn't that busy. While we were waiting for our check, I started looked at the bottles more the are sitting on a ledge overlooking our table. This ledge is from about adult chest height to eye height. And then I noticed the black flecks. And as I get closer a I realize it's mice droppings. Then I look over to my partners side of the booth. I tell him to look at the black "sprinkles" and agrees it's mice droppings. We were speechless that being said. We got up and looked at the booths behind us and every booths had mice droppings. Even ledges away from tables. We continued walking from dining room to the bar area. That entire brick wall ledge on the way had mice droppings. How this is being overlooked is absolutely frightening. There is a definite mice infestation in this building. read more

I must tell you the food was excellent, but the service was AMAZING! Our server was Taylor! She was absolutely OUTSTANDING. I am 60 years old, and can honestly say, she had 14 hungry guys to deal with, and was phenomenal. Her ability to connect, converse, serve, and go above and beyond was remarkable. Very disappointing experience. We ordered steak and crab as a treat, but the crab was severely overcooked and dry. When we raised the issue with our waitress, it was not addressed. I had a great meal at this surprisingly massive restaurant -- I guess I shouldn't be surprised, as it was indeed a freight house and uh those are large. The look of this place are perfect, I love all of the train stained glass and lofty wood n rivet look. The service here is super friendly as well, I even got an impromptu tour of the place after making an offhand comment about the train maps on the wall. But most importantly: the steak. So affordable, portions huge, and very tasty! I ordered the 'lighter fare' prime rib which was more than enough for me and came with a great side salad and a satisfying baked potato. Also peep that whiskey list -- massive! Impressive! Also hits the spot. Look, it's no thrills dining but sometimes just some good old fashioned basics are all you need. I've been here 30+ times and have always been impressed, but the last two visits have been incredibly disappointing. The service is still solid, but the food quality has gone downhill. A few nights ago, I ordered the filet and crab combo while the filet came out overcooked and almost rock-hard. The server was very kind and took it back, but for a $160 plate (which is already an insane market price), quality should never be a concern. What an absolute delicious meal!!! The ambiance was great, the service-great, the food - fantastic! We had the teriyaki filet and teriyaki sirloin. The baked potatoes were huge with ample butter and sour cream so when you got to the end, you weren't left with dry potato. The salad bar was filled with a fresh selection of lettuce and toppings. We also had the vanilla cheesecake with chocolate syrup and it too was, of course, fantastic. We are only saddened by the fact that we live 8 hours away. Good thing or we'd be here all the time! Was, ok. Not the best steak I have ever had. I ordered the pepper steak NY strip, medium rare. Every pepper steak I have ever had was grilled with the pepper on both sides. This was just a huge amount of pepper put on after it was grilled....umm, ok. It came medium well..... My friends each ordered something different. One friend ordered the regular NY medium. He got medium well. My other friend ordered the fillet medium. He got rare.... Honestly, I was expecting a lot better. It was expensive and just ok, unfortunately. Wow they get packed fast! Arrived right at 5pm and and the parking lot was half full already. We got seated right away, regardless of how busy it already was. Or waitress came by, gave us water, and greeted herself (Riley). We already knew what we wanted so we asked if she could take our order right away if she wasn't busy. Which she graciously did. My husband and I both got the 12oz prime rib. I definitely love the salad bar. Everything was very organized, cleaned and well put. Service was great. It was nice to see that they accommodate large parties as there were three large family gatherings next to us. Absolutely insane experience. I have been going here for 25 years and never experienced a garbage waiter like Liz W. We came in intending to get some apps and drinks and then leave. The host seated us in the dining room as we awaited our order. Liz came and took our order, we stated that all we were having was apps and a drink and we immediately got a face from her. We ordered some drinks as well as the scallops casino and the artichoke. The scallops were amazing as usual. The artichoke was, raw. We asked to get the artichoke steemed more which they did. We tried the newly steamed artichoke and it was still bad. We have had this appetizer hundreds of times so we knew something was off. We informed the waitress of this and Liz TOOK ONE OF THE ARTICHOKE LEAVES AND ATE IT AT THE TABLE. We were all aghast. She gave us another artichoke eventually after eating part of ours and it was superb. We informed the manager on the way out and he informed us that she has been there for 20 years...who cares, if she sucks, she sucks. I had an unpleasant experience after I was told to sit at the bar as a single on a Wednesday evening. That was my preference, so no problem. A young bartender served up my water with lemon and I asked his thoughts between the Prime Rib and the New York Strip. The Prime Rib is highlighted at the restaurant but I might prefer the Strip. He stammered and finally said "I work the bar and don't really no the food that well". I asked if there is someone that could provide some input to my question. He responded that I would need to sit at a table and ask a server. I said "I was instructed to sit at bar this evening. ". A very disappointing experience at what is to be a fine dining establishment, I walked out and went to Digger's Sting, and enjoyed the experience and a fabulous Ribeye steak dinner. read more

While yesterday's tenderloin kabobs were perfect, the loaded baked potato was not hot nor especially flavorful. The salad bar is pretty limited but that which they had was good (cherry or grape tomatoes would be better than the sliced flavorless they offer). This was one of the better dining experiences I had on my visit to see my parents in MN. They have mentioned this place to me before and go here regularly on a monthly basis. They make the 1 hour drive from Stewartville to La Crosse to eat here, and let me tell you it's a well worth the trip. The drive to La Crosse is very pleasant and nice. We get there on a Monday evening and it's pretty busy, the parking lot is nearly full. We walk in and get seated at our table. The decor and ambiance is really nice and pleasant here. Dark carpets, lots of wood, plenty of large areas to seat people. We put our orders in, and they're known for Prime Rib so I opted to get the 12oz as the waiter tells me that is going to be plenty. I considered the Cowboy but was very glad I did not as the 12oz was plenty of meat and I could only finish half. The pics on Yelp were somewhat deceiving in that the 12oz seems a bit smaller than it really is, so when it got to me I was like - wow - that is more than enough prime rib! I am glad the waiter said it was their top choice. I also needed to try the wild rice pilaf and the squash as it is in season, and I haven't had squash in a while. They also got the 12oz meal along with the salad bar, which I do recommend. I was glad to get this because the offerings are simple yet very fresh and great quality. One of the best salad bars I have experienced, and it was so good I went back for another bowl. I love trying different dressings, and I usually find a couple that are pretty good while others don't measure up. I asked side bowls and ended up trying all the dressings and much to my surprise I liked them all. Favorites included the Olive Oil which had a lot of herbs & seasongins at the bottom of the container, so dip that ladle spoon deep down there and pick up that awesome flavor! I also liked the Thousand Island (some sweetness), Blue Cheese (not too pungent), and the French which was quite sweet. Ranch was good but not the best ever, and Italian very good. It's rare that I like most all of the dressings at a salad bar, I wish I could eat their salad everyday. Food comes and - wow - that 12oz Prime Rib is huge. The wild rice pilaf was okay, it was barely warm and flavor didn't live up to some previous comments saying it was awesome. The squash was good but luke warm, and that brown sugar butter they give you to top the squash was - wow! It's very sweet so I don't use that much but it is quite potent and packs a punch. It was so decadant good I took it home with me - all the way to TX, and it's in my fridge now - lol! Yeah it was worth storing in the hotel fridge and taking it through TSA - who were like WTF is that? It's LaCrosse Gold. The bread here is also really good, we got 2 loaves, the butter is good too. I also ordered the featured cocktail, an Old Fashioned with organic bourbon whiskey, amarena dark cherries. It was $12 and didn't live up to the hype and expectations. Felt it was light on the liquor and probably should have been an $8 cocktail. We had no room for dessert and all of us had leftovers. Overall it was about a 3.8 star experience. Why not 5-stars? Well there were a few issues. My parents were not happy with their prime rib saying that this was not up to par with their usual visits. We all ordered medium rare and she had a lot of blood on her plate, as did he, and he said this was not cooked enough to be medium rare as that is their usual go-to. She asked the waiter to take the plate back and drain out the excess blood / juices. My wild rice was nearly cold and squash was luke warm but I opted not to complain simply because when my dad escalated his prime rib issue to the waiter he wasn't met with much empathy, but instead this guy led with his ego and interrupted my dad and cut him off in the middle of his explanation saying "meat doneness is based off temperature and we follow that accordingly". My dad got somewhat flustered yet stuck to his point saying how that is all they get here. The guy offers to take it back to cook it some more but my dad said he was concerned that they would overcook it (as they have before). He did take her plate back to drain it, and when he got back he apologized, but overall he could have been more empathetic - and you don't cut off the customer or proceed to get into a debate with them to argue a point. That was not professional and left a bad taste in my dad's mouth (no pun intended). But we didn't let that sour the night as it was my first time there, and I would definitely go back here, but I'd probably not get the same waiter as I overheard other waitstaff talking to their customers who were very polite and more customer service oriented. But do get the 12oz (the Cowboy is enough for 2), do get the salad bar, loved mixing the creamy and fresh horseradish together, the brown sugar butter is decadent, and just take your sweet time and enjoy! read more

Great quality beef and cooked right to order, I liked my steak a lot but the kitchen needs to re evaluate their use of salt. Steak was basically unsalted (easy fix, table salt) and the side of mushrooms tasted like canned pickled pizza mushrooms they were SO SALTY. I could only eat half of them. Others at my table enjoyed their food but all of it seemed rushed by the upstairs kitchen who just wanted to close. The restaurant was still open and seating downstairs when we left. Our family who ordered king crab legs had to have someone else pick them as when she had ordered them before they had been prepared for easy eating by the customer. This time that wasn't the case, the cracker was flimsy and she wasn't able to do them herself. By the time she got her food the kitchen had just walked out so no sending back and asking for them to use a pair of shears. Someone just ordered a $100+ item, take 30 seconds to prep them right Service was nice, our waitress was working waaayyyy waaayyyy too many tables but she still kept ontop of it while dealing with more than any server should including one huge table of mostly rude people who couldn't see normal public behavior if it walked up and punched them in the teeth. We started in the bar as there was an hour wait to get into the main dining room, but it was a Sunday night in a local spot so we chose to stay and check it out. Some of the things we noticed that maybe could be addressed and trained differently if it seems important would be the following. If There is a charge to split the plate... make sure to actually split the plate...here splitting the plate includes a salad and side choice for each... however, they didn't split the plate but charged us to split the plate Purchased a hundred dollar bottle of wine and after it was opened we poured our own wine the entire time, and when we walked from the bar to the main dining I got to grab my glass, coat, purse and bottle of wine and take to the table myself. For My leftovers I was brought a box to package them myself. These are all examples of areas of service and service is usually what people tip on, so if so inclined, someone might want to share the information with the staff to assist in giving a more balanced presentation between food, beverages and service. We came to La Crosse from Eagle River just for a little getaway. Stayed at the Radisson & decided to have dinner at The Freighthouse, which is nearby. We've had dinner at many, many fine dining establishments and in our opinion, these were the best restaurant meals we've ever had. We both had the filet & king crab combo, Caesar salad, asparagus & baked potato. The salad was fresh & crisp & topped with fresh shredded parmesan. Asparagus came in a huge serving & was perfectly tender crisp cooked. Our steaks were perfectly done & melt in your mouth tender and the crab legs - OMG!! Three big legs which our fabulous server broke up for us & was so tender & sweet it barely needed any butter. The decor & atmosphere are very warm & inviting. We have been traveling for the past week across the Midwest and ended up in La Crosse, WI. We were pretty hungry and decided to try The Freighthouse because it was basically right down the street from our hotel. The staff was very friendly as soon as we stepped across the threshold. We were seated quickly and as soon as the waitress took our orders, it was off to the salad bar. I was very happy that they had a simple olive oil along with the standard dressings as I don't really care for salad dressing (I can feel the judgement, but I don't care). My son had the summer salad with fruit, pecans and spinach and he absolutely love it. Most people around us ended up getting the summer salad so if you are here, please try it. I ordered an 8oz sirloin with a baked potato. The child had the teriyaki chicken and rice pilaf. The food arrived and there was an issue, but I let the waitress know that it was fine and continued with the meal. When the bill came, we found out that she mentioned the issue to the manager and they ended up making it right, which was very appreciated although unnecessary in my opinion. Desiree is an amazing waitress so if you get a chance, please request her. She was super attentive and helpful. First time in La Crosse. Got to the freighthouse about 30 minutes before the kitchen closed but was welcomed in and escorted to a table. I ordered the sirloin, medium rare plus and it came out perfectly. The seasonal vegetables were very fresh and also cooked perfectly. This place has really good wine choices to. The entire weight staff seems very friendly, and my way to her was top notch. The decor is really cool and was an old train depot. Gave three stars but normally would give 4-5 Have gone there 3-5 times a year for over 30 years starting with my parents in 80s through today. Until last night was the first time my meal was not up to par. The streak was over done and the baked potato was like warm at best. The drinks, appetizer and my wife's food was done right and very good. In their defense the waitress asked to re-fire my streak but we were trying to get to a movie as well. The Filet was bland and cooked poorly. I'm not sure they can even say they charbroil. The Rock Lobster was also bland, but luckily, you could drench it in butter. The baked potato was cold and nothing special. The seasonal vegetables were not cooked at all and were still raw. The Scallops Casino was an okay appetizer, but the parmesan cheese definitely is from a can. The best part of the meal was the fluffy bread and butter. We were then followed by a good salad bar.
