This beach is 12 minutes from our front door, so you can't beat if for convenience. Every year, we go to park headquarters and buy a summer parking pass for fifty dollars (senior rate). At peak times and peak season, parking can be five or six rows back, but we've never had any real trouble parking. The lifeguards here are amiable and efficient. There are good restrooms and a snack bar. The beach is magnificent, with great opportunities to see bird life such as American Oyster Catchers and cormorants. Only problem some years is the seaweed, which can turn some parts of the beach into a soup. On the other hand, once you are on the beach, you can walk as far as you wish towards Long Beach, and set up your beach chairs anywhere. The Parks Dept. continues to improve this every year. This season they have added a large ramp from the restroom area to the beach, covering about half the distance to the water. Regular admission is ten dollars, so we make sure to go more than five times to get more than our money's worth. read more

Look out! That's an appropriate way to start this review because you may want to watch what goes on when coming to Point Lookout Beach. This review was sparked after a less-than ideal day here today. I've actually been to Point Lookout many times in the past, but alas, not recently. For some reason last year, the Town of Hempstead decided to no longer admit Town of North Hempstead residents for the $10 fee it costs to enter Point Lookout. Instead, you're free to still come in...for $50. No thanks, I'll go to other LI beach spots, though today my mother and I were driving in the same car as a family friend (who lives in the town of Hempstead!) and so we were able to get in for the $10 fee. Well, that was after waiting 40 minutes to get through the tollbooths where they collect money. Listen, I know Jones Beach has many fields, but at the same time we got to the entrance of PL today, we could have entered Field 2 at Jones in seconds. I also know that maybe the backup was due to there only being two booths open (when you could have four) perhaps to keep staff separate (?), but there's gotta be a better way. At peak times in previous years at Point Lookout we never waited even close to that length of time so I don't entirely get it. I'm sorry, but your signs of "please be patient" don't instill anything more than frustration. Once actually past the booths, Point Lookout was basically the same it had been the last time I was there, and that's a good thing. Actually, they built a lovely wooden walkway from the main entrance area onto the beach which I have to say was probably the only highlight (besides beach views, I suppose). Before even getting on the beach itself, we began the battle of the bathrooms. Apparently, the women's room was closed and so a sanitation staff member was attempting to (kind of) assist in letting men and women both use the men's room. This wasn't entirely working as a line of men (and women) quickly grew. Luckily, my mother ducked in before this started and I used my camel abilities to hold it in for a while. When I returned later on, it seemed the ladies room was functioning again and a line of women ran back about 10 deep. This might've been because they were now actually following the sign that stated only 2 people in the bathroom at a time (which totally wasn't happening earlier when the men's room became unisex). Later on, when our family friend went to the bathroom, she returned saying the women's room was now closed and so she went back into the men's...hmm. The pièce de résistance was when we were ready to leave and the women's room was open again only to find out that basically none of the toilets were flushing. It was a bit chaotic with a handful of ladies trying to figure out if they should go into the men's room or not. No sanitation staff member (or anyone for that matter) was around to assist with this ridiculousness). I'm just glad I didn't have to go again. Beyond the bathrooms, one other item that needs to be mentioned is the garbage situation. Point Lookout removed all garbage cans from the beach which, I will say, probably helps keep it clean (a plus). The issues with this is the lack of signage to state that this happened. One sign (behind a wooden gate right before the walkway) is your only nod to the need to take your trash with you. So when leaving the beach, there's a garbage can right in front of the women's room past the walkway and so every person decided to throw their trash in here. Not the best thinking on Point Lookout's setup because this can was overflowing with bags, some laying on the ground around the women's bathroom entrance. There were more trash cans further down (all empty), but I don't fault people for wanting to dispose of their garbage right away. I'd call this the opposite of being safe and clean. Maybe place more cans by this area or better yet, empty it? Ugh. Overall, I don't want to bad mouth Point Lookout because the beach itself is actually very nice. The sand, the water (okay the seaweed is a little much, but that's how it goes), even the staff attempting to keep things safe by (mostly) ensuring people wear masks when walking to and from the entrance. But at the end of the day, all of these other factors just hurt the actual positives of the place. We live on Long Island so it's not like Point Lookout is the only beach in town. Consider this a farewell (maybe even a good riddance) as we'll/I'll look elsewhere this summer in getting some sand and sun. read more

I love coming to Point Lookout during the summer. This beach is well maintained and the ramp makes it easy to get from the parking lot, over. It's huge and offers plenty of space for beach goers looking to spend their day swimming, tanning, fishing, or just taking a walk. This is quite a popular beach however and does get packed on weekends, especially after Memorial Day! Their parking price remains $10 for Nassau County residents, and $22 for non-Nassau County residents. Pretty steep, so I definitely recommend coming with a local! If coming on a weekend, I recommend arriving before 9:30am the latest. The front parking lot gets packed and it's not fun walking in from all the way in the back. The line to get in also takes forever! Nonetheless it's still a great beach, and is always a fun time for the family! read more

I haven't been to this beach in awhile and am sad to see it on the decline. It used to be my go-to, beat the crowds, an affordable price for town residents and fairly well-kept. But now it seems all of that is dwindling. They added more jetties, which I presume are hurricane deterrence in this case. Important, but with several new jetties, the seaweed gets easily trapped and you come out of the water looking like the cousin of the Swamp Thing. On the bright side, seaweed is good for your skin right? Maybe not with the inflated entry prices ($10 for resident, $25 for non-res) you'll save some money on your skin care regimen. With one snack stand and high-used, poorly maintained bathrooms, it isn't the best spot to spend a day. I hope with the raised prices something other than additional jetties spruces up the place. read more

Pt. Lookout was a nice alternative the other beaches in the area and was less to park (and free parking after 5pm). There are a few different areas to park for accesability. There are restrooms and a small concession (think snack not lunch) and usually an ice cream truck. It is well lifeguarded and ambulance in the parking lot in case of emergency. You can not "play ball" in the sun bathing area of water.... only at the top of the sand near the rest area. So leave your frisbees and footballs at home. Overall It was a good place to chill for an hour or so. We wouldnt pick this beach for a "day at the beach". read more

This is a really nice beach. It is 10 dollars to park if you are a nassau county resident if not it is 20. The place is so nice and clean. They take of the beach and facilities. I enjoy this place and I highly recommend it. read more

We've been coming to this beach for years. And love it. In fact we were her just a few weeks ago. We are all healthy with masks etc. Coming from Manhattan. We know to pay the $50 a car for non residents but the girl at the gate said now only Nassau residents. I thought non residents meant Non Nassau residents. They need to post this somewhere. What a waste of time and horrible communication. Or they need to retrain the girl if this was misinformation. read more

So the actual beach is great. Not crowded compared to Long Beach and a nice new boardwalk. It is $10 dollars for residents and a huge price tag of $50 per car for non residents. The last few years here the seaweed has been extremely high. They have added new jetties and keeps the waves smaller if you have little ones. The reason for the 3 star review is because of the bathrooms. YUCK!! Outdated and worse not clean! Where is the money cars are paying going towards? read more

Here is a perfect example of how corrupt Nassau County really is. As if they don't rake in enough money on camera tickets and home taxes, now they raised the price to $50 to park at Point Lookout even if your a high paying resident of Nassau County - Keep your seaweed & biting sand flies, I'll keep my $50 - You too can sit in traffic 24/7 fall into mass potholes, get tickets whilst driving by cameras for going 31 MPH & pay 15 grand in taxes - Long Island Corruption at its finest read more

I love this beach!!! It's the only one I will go to in NY. ....so quiet and peaceful. The staff and administration are polite and helpful especially J at the gate. Highly recommend!!! read more

Beach is nice and not overly crowded. More seaweed than we'd like but bearable. My biggest complaint is the ridiculous price for non residents. We've been coming to this beach for a number of years now. Was surprised when they told us the new price was $50 per car. That's double of what we paid last year! Won't be coming as often as we did, because honestly it's not worth it. read more

This has always been a beautiful beach. However, a 100% increase in parking fee for non residents is awful! I would generally go on my own several times a week during the summer, to relax after work. I didn't mind the $20 and then $25 raised fee to park. I would take a book and enjoy. Now the town has raised it to $50 for non Nassau residents. Absurd. They are essentially stating they do not want non residents there. Our presence appears to be a hardship to be paid through the nose. Sad. read more

Spacious parking lot. Small snack bar. Public restrooms available. Sand is as expected has enough room for all. Lifeguards on site & green flags are all around to allow for safe watching swimming. Down sides are the plentiful shells that are immediately stepped on as you enter the water. Be careful as some can feel very sharp- esp as you are trying to dodge a crashing wave. Once you enter in past 10feet there is some seaweed to swim thru then it's mostly smooth sand beneath your feet & overall light to medium waves. read more

I went today (8/29/18) and the beach had a shag carpet of seaweed that extended from the shore to about 20 feet out where it was more bearable. I'm not just saying clumps here and there...it was riddled with seaweed from the surface to the ground on all areas between the green flags. To be fair they did warn you with a sign before you paid for parking but it was just really gross once you saw it. And after speaking to a few people at the beach I discovered this is the norm now in August for the last few years. I saw man made rock formations on either side of the lifeguarded area so I am concluding that this is what's stopping the seaweed from escaping and pushing it to shore. It's a real shame because it's a very nice beach but in all honesty I won't come back again because of this seaweed issue. read more
