I tried my best to set aside my Californian-standard of poke but even attempting to do that this place isn't worth the hype. First off the line is INSANELY long. For what? Yes, I understand poke is new to the Boston area so I understand that. But honestly? Not worth the wait. It's expensive. It pained me to pay the $11 something dollars for a REGULAR with no extra add ons. The rice took over half of the bowl. The white rice was burned... The fish cubes were tiny! And to make matters worse, they didn't even have Hawaiian Sun... So much for a good poke experience. Honestly would rather wait a few months to go back home and get more fish at a cheaper price WITH Hawaiian Sun. Poke? YES PLEASE! Poke bowls are basically the Hawaiian interpretation of burrito bowls, but 100x better. Pokeworks brings all the flavor and freshness to Davis Square. Portions are very reasonable for the price (I usually ask for only about half the rice), plus there are a million mix and match options between raw fish, other proteins, DOZENS of add-ons, and 10 sauces to combine whatever way you choose. The result is an affordable and healthy, freshly-made lunch or dinner. This location often has a line but also usually has seating available by the time you get your food. It's a relaxing place to either get chow down or you can easily get your meal to go. Highly recommend for pre-movies, post-gym, and more! read more

I discovered Poke (and Pokeworks in particular) about 6 months ago in Seattle. I liked it so much I ate there for lunch every day (plus once for dinner). So I was thrilled to discover that Pokeworks was coming to Boston! It took me 6 months (getting here from where I live or work is challenging) but I finally ate at this location. It was pretty good. I had the Umami Special, which I've had once or twice at their Seattle location. The tuna wasn't QUITE as fresh, to be honest, and the rice was too sticky, but it was still pretty delicious. There wasn't anyone in there when I went (mid-afternoon on a Sunday) so I can't comment on service speed. The employees weren't unfriendly, but weren't super friendly either. It was kind of dark in the the restaurant, which wasn't good or bad...just an observation. All in all, I'd definitely go back when I'm in the area. read more

I'm so glad that Pokéworks has made its way to New England! I've never had authentic poké, so I can't speak to that, but what I had here was definitely delicious. The "make your own" concept is basically what you'd expect at Chipotle, you tell them what you're starting with (bowl/burrito/salad) then move along the line and choose your fillings from the station, assembly line style. At the end you choose toppings and sauces, to which they will ask if you'd like your sauce to be laid on light, medium, or heavy. I thoroughly enjoyed my bowl, every ingredient was super fresh! My boyfriend created a mondo burrito (the kid making it said it was the biggest one he'd made all day) and it was rolled perfectly, no mess! Staff is friendly enough and the space is clean. There really wasn't a wait at all when we went in (around 8pm on a rainy Tuesday). I think I've garnered a craving for some Pokéworks just writing this review! read more

Great new place in Davis square. They opened on 12/1 but already have huge lines - cool start! (Hopefully the staff will get more efficient and faster once they ramp up). Fun fact: people who were walking by, asked what the place was, and some people in the line responded "oh, it's like chipotle, but with sushi" - I'd recommend a better branding to the owners... :-) As some of the reviewers noted - that it's not authentic poke per se, because poke is supposed to be marinated. At pokeworks they add the sauces right there so they don't soak in too much. In Hawaii they usually serve additional sauces on the side - for instance, you'd get a wasabi aioli on the side, in addition to the marinade that the fish is in. Aside of that fact, the food is really good and fresh ;-) I especially enjoyed the crab salad and seaweed toppings, as well as diced fresh mango. The regular size bowl/burrito/salad is $10.95, the large is $13.50. Not too bad at all! There is quite a lot of rice in the bowl, but it doesn't make it bad, just filling. I got a bowl and a seaweed burrito - highly recommend a bowl over a burrito. I also chose a classic Hawaiian burrito, which was quite bland in comparison with my DIY bowl where you choose all the cool toppings! I didn't particularly like the pokeworks classic sauce, as it was too salty to my taste, but the wasabi aioli is very good. I took my food to go and found out later that I should've taken some soy sauce with me, too, for the rice. Will definitely be back! read more

Perhaps the grand opening was just a bad experience, but this place was only mediocre to me. The bowls we ordered were the Hawaiian Classic, Umami Classic, and Spicy Ahi. I was really disappointed in the flavor of the sauces or maybe there just wasn't enough of it. This is definitely a place to try out, but I wouldn't ever crave it. So glad that we finally have a Poke place in town. We were not expecting the poke to be comparable to Hawai'i but were pleasantly surprised. We went on the nice saturday afternoon, expecting the line to be out of the door but it wasn't bad at all. Took us about 15 mins to get the food and there were a few seats open. Heads up - you've to order food first before you can grab a seat. Pokeworks offers the option to build your own bowl or burrito or get one of the prefix options. There are two sizes - regular and large. We found the regular size (comes with two types of proteins) to be fairly filling. They have a lot of toppings and add-on options; lets you go really crazy with it. Food was fresh and super delicious. Now if they could only branch out to other neighborhoods :( read more

Like everyone has already mentioned, it is difficult to find parking. Once we got to there, we could see that the space is tight for sitting in. We ended up getting the Hawaiian Classic and the spicy shrimp and scallop. They would tell you what's going in your actual order and would ask if there were other ingredients that we would like to add. I thought it was extra so I didn't add anything. pretty good! bowl is worth more than the "burrito". you get more food that way, and make your own is worth it. you can add whatever you want so it becomes a ton of food. the sushi is fresh but not SUPER fresh because it was too chewy. the sauces are good, there's a wide selection of toppings. it is a bit slow because everyone is new. the place has a ton of huge space, but the eating areas are communal, and I think there should be more seats. by the soda/water (you can have water cups), there's soy sauce, sriracha, and sesame oil you can put on your food as well. So glad a pokeworks opened up in Boston. Having moved from New York, this was something I definitely missed up in Boston. Came here with my fiance for their bogo day. We got here 10 minutes before opening to a huge line already and waited an hour to get the food. The fish is all very fresh and the toppings all complement the food well. My personal favorites are the seaweed salad, lotus chips, the fruits and pokework classic sauce. The location is clean and the employees are very friendly. Happy I got to get my Poke fix in Boston! I went in not to expect excellent service since it's their soft opening. The staff are still getting the hang of things and they are really trying. I feel like I lucked out; there wasn't a long line and I found seating easily. The crowd after me was not so lucky. Pokeworks- please put more chairs at your tables or have more tables. Pros: 1. Great concept: chipotle style set up with poke aka raw fish. You choose the fish (or more than 1 type) and it can come on top of salad or rice. There are preset combos to choose from or you build your own toppings and sauces. 2. Good quality food: been there twice and all ingredients were fresh Cons: 1. Service. The 2 times I've been were soon after they opened so I'm not sure if it's gotten better, but the lines are ridiculous and in part because I found the employees weren't well trained. The staff were not efficient (for example, compared to every chipotle I've ever been to). They also messed up my order (I ordered a set combo) and when I tried to correct one staff member she shrugged and fixed what I asked but then didn't communicate with the next staff member in line, I had to repeat myself down the train of 4 people and again explain to the cashier. Not worth so much effort for a 'fast food' place. 2. Store set up: the space is not used well and there seems to never be enough seats for people. I hate hovering around customers waiting for them to finish. Conclusions: this place would be a 5-star lunch option if they improved service and set up. pretty good poke. give it a try, just make sure you're not in a hurry and best if you bring it home or elsewhere to eat. read more

I didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did, but for the price, it was pretty good. As some others have noted, there are flow issues. I was impressed how often the staff member was confused as to which order was mine, despite us all being in a line on the other side of the glass. As a result, my friend's order was a little messed up. Dear management, please talk to the African American man (rounder man serving the food) working there (or just let him go!) - he was extremely rude to me and my friend. He was so unwilling to add ingredients to our bowls and made aggressive comments like "see now this is what I'm saying you should have warned me.." while shaking his head. He criticized us repeatedly for making a 'complicated' order when we had specifically told him which bowl we wanted, the Hawaiian. We were also very respectful towards him so his attitude was unwarranted. Clearly this man does not know the menu, but more importantly he does not know how to treat customers with basic respect. I would have been fine if he just lacked manners; however, this employee went out of his way to make us feel bad about ourselves and ruin our day. On top of it all, the portions he gave us were ridiculously small and my double protein was just a few chunks of salmon and a few chunks of tuna. We left still hungry and very upset over our experience. Safe to say we will not be back anytime soon, which is disappointing since I used to be a huge fan of Pokeworks and frequented the place often. read more

After reading several other reviews, we decided to go to Pokeworks at a time when we did not expect to find a line. This gave us time to look around, talk with the staff, and choose something at a pace that a newbie could handle. We got the Hawaiian classic and Umami classic, each opting for large (3 scoops of protein instead of 2), since we had skipped breakfast in anticipation of going here for a big and special lunch. We added sweet onion, cucumber, edamame, seaweed - ogo on the Hawaiian, and hijiki on the Umami, mango, sesame seeds, seaweed salad, green onion, and onion crisps. This was all piled on a bed of rice and cabbage in a bowl. I won't try to describe the incredible flavors, you NEED to try it for yourself but (a) both were amazing, and (b) each of us had enough to make a second lunch. We will definitely be back. So, why only 4 stars? First, the prices aren't great. Secondly, when my wife asked for avocado and was advised/cautioned that it would add $1.50, she assumed that the portion would be similar to that of the person ahead of her. Not wanting to make a fuss, we ended up paying $1.50 for approximately 1 tablespoon (less than half a poke-scoop) of avocado. The only place of its kind in the area. I was really looking forward to this place opening. Delicious? Sure. Crowded? Yes, and not in a good way. Line is too long and it is impossible to get a seat. I made my own bowl but didn't get raw fish cause I'm pregnant. I picked random stuff to go together in the bowl and it came nothing short of yummy. Although the food was delicious, one major flaw ruined my experience: While in line, the assembler casually mentioned that they need a new tool to distribute the wasabi evenly. I do not eat fish/sea food/shellfish, etc. I noticed they have a chicken option so I went for that and was sorely disappointed. When they scooped the chicken up it looked like tuna fish and I got really scared but they assured me that it was chicken. Overall, the chicken tasty mushy and I wasn't a fan. Good poke requires a careful balance of textures and flavors. Basically, everything has to be cut up at the right size and in the right amounts. In my quinoa classic Hawaiian bowl the tuna was too big and didn't mix very well. Also the quinoa or some ingredient was bitter. It may be sauce. First time trying a poke bowl and wasn't sure what to expect. Unfortunately, it was a disappointment overall. Had 2 bowls, both of which: 1. Rice was undercooked = still hard. 2. Missing sides that were selected. 3. Fish (tuna and salmon) we're too salty (tongue went numb from salt and developed an inflamed taste bud) I even tried letting them know about #1 & 2 through a private message, but received no acknowledgement. How unprofessional! Should have known to avoid when I saw non-asian employees. Poke bowls seem overrated and more expensive than making rolls and nigiri, imo. read more

First time here, and the thing I was most impressed by was the poor customer service. The first person in the line was disinterested, and just wanted to move us down the line. She was bothered by my questions, which were made difficult to hear by the excessively loud music. The next person on the line was more pleasant, but took a very long time to move people through. As we got the the register, that person spent 5 minutes going through some information, writing down numbers on a set of menus, gave them to the first person on the line, then finally noticed us standing there. We went to grab a table in the half empty restaurant, and all the tables were dirty. Overall, I was very underwhelmed by the service. The food is good, but not great. We came on a slow day. I would never wait in line for this, and next time would take my food to go, as the music makes it impossible to hold a conversation with the person sitting across from you. read more

Sushirritos have been around for a while but it seems like the craze is just coming to Boston this year. I've had many sushirritos in NYC before this and never really understood the hype. I was told by a sushi chef that the correct way to eat sushi is in one bite in order to taste all the flavors and components as they were meant to together. Now this is already difficult with some specialty rolls that pack in 10 ingredients. So you can see my dilemma with sushirritos because they are essentially large, oversized sushi rolls. Just like when eating a burrito, I find that one bite will have just rice and veggies and another bite has just fish. While I prefer my sushi cut up in bite sized pieces, I do think Pokeworks is a lot better than other places because they really stuff your sushirrito with a good amount of fish and toppings. Beware, this location does not have albacore tuna (despite being largely printed on their menu). My frustration with the situation was that the employee insisted on getting the manager to explain to me that albacore tuna is nonexistent in Boston. Lies. I went to Pokeworks with a few people for a late dinner Friday night (late for me -- around 8pm). I was STARVING by this point, so I knew I'd want a poke bowl with extra protein. I went for the tuna + salmon + quinoa, and loaded up on extra toppings. Overall, I thought this meal was really filling and very delicious. I like that you can go back for all sorts of different combinations of sauces/toppings. Other folks in our group got the sushi burrito (sushirito?). I was less impressed with the burrito. The seaweed is a bit hard to bite through, and overall it's hard to fill it up with all the many delicious toppings. I would rather get regular sushi than the burrito. HOWEVER, will come back for a poke bowl. Overall the service was decent. Not a lot of seating, so it was kind of annoying when people in line claimed seats when there were clearly people looking to sit down with their food. (Especially since the line was long and those people would have been done eating by the time the chair-savers got their food!) Once the weather warms up, I'll probably come here for takeout. read more
