Ordered Poke City for takeout for the first time last night and I'm super excited that I did! I have a feeling this will become one of my go to spots in the Cambridge/Somerville area. I ordered the Poke City Special bowl because I looooved that it includes Salmon, Ahi tuna AND Shrimp. They have a bunch of speciality bowls and offer a build-your-own version, which is always nice. The quality of the fish and veggies was great, and the portion was huge, I ended up throwing a lot of the sushi rice away in the end because I just couldn't finish it. It was a pretty standard Poke bowl overall, but it does have a yummy pineapple salsa that makes it a little more exiting than your basic bowl. I also got some Sriracha aioli and a Miso soup on the side. I probably wouldn't order the soup again, the flavor was a bit off to me but that probably just comes down to personal preference. I always customize because their pre-made combinations are not as tasty. Comes with a TON of the "base" (rice) and not as much of everything else -- disproportionate in my opinion. At around $16 for a 3 protein bowl (via Grub Hub), it is a bit pricey, and the portions could be larger for sure. But, overall it is good enough! My one star rating does not reflect the food - which I never got - but the attitude of the workers and management. I mistakenly made an online order from Poke City in Boston. When I arrived to pick up in Cambridge, naturally they had no order for me. I figured out the problem and asked them if they could help. There was no other customer in the place, not at all busy. The counter person told me she had to talk to the manager and disappeared into the back. She came back and told me to try calling the Boston store. No answer on several tries. So I asked them to call the other store for me. She disappeared into the back again. After a few more minutes she came back and said there was nothing she could do. I asked to talk with the manager. She went back again and eventually came back to tell me there was no manager there. I asked who she was talking to in the back. Eventually another worker came to the front and pretty rudely told me that the other store had nothing to do with them, with a separate bank and payment system. (They have the same name and menu.) By then I had spent quite a bit of time there so I asked the first worker if she had been lying to me about there being a manager. She just mumbled something. The second worker continued to stonewall. I explained I was picking up for a customer who was a regular, but who would never come back if there wasn't a better solution. They didn't seem to think this was important enough to think about. In the end, my friend got through to the worker in the Boston store, who was very nice and responsive and happily refunded for the order. She said she hadn't answered because she was the only one working in the Boston store and she was swamped with orders. I wonder what the lying worker in the Cambridge store was doing when she pretended to help me by going to the back. In any case, I would give a provisional recommendation to the Boston Poke City, based on the excellent customer service of their beleaguered employee, but to the Cambridge store: f--- you. read more

In the past, we've always gone to Pokeworks, but we decided to try Poke City because they have the option to have your bowl made with Zoodles! How awesome :) It really helps when you're trying to watch your calorie intake. The one thing with zoodles is that it doesn't soak up the juices like rice does, so it can get kind of watery at the bottom, but I usually just drain it and then add the sauce myself after. I really enjoy their poke and their topping options, especially the quality of their spicy tuna, but one thing I will say is that the protein servings are quite small. Even if you order your bowl with 3 proteins, the portions don't quite seem to measure up to that of Pokeworks. What a great new addition to the Porter Square area! I'm back again at a poke / sushi bowl fast casual place, and Poke City is a solid choice. Protein portions seem a bit bigger than all the other places, but I'm sad that tuna and salmon are the only raw fish available. It seems like every place I've tried is the same except for Pokeworks, which offers scallops. I don't eat salmon, so I got two very healthy scoops of tuna. The staff working there were kind and patient too, explaining to customers how things worked. I love that the pineapple and mango toppings are fresh!!! Other places only offer canned or frozen versions so this is very very nice. One thing I would like improved is that the sauce choices are not as fantastic as I hoped- I wish there was a quick description of what goes in each. I had to ask and I felt bad having the staff explain it and then telling her I wanted some other sauce... I got the wasabi shoyu mixed with sriracha aioli. The shoyu sauce was a little too sweet for my liking, so I wish there was some kind of sesame based vinaigrette - something with a deeper flavor than just plain soy or ponzu. Not sure if this place offers it but brief descriptions would be helpful! My bowl was great but I felt like something was lacking flavor wise. Poke City's bowls are generous and fresh; I was really impressed by what a substantial and varied poke bowl I built with no extra surcharges! (8 toppings, 3 sauces, etc... all with no surcharge!) This always makes me super happy because I like to have a little bit of everything in my bowl. And their available ingredients are well-chosen such that you can't really go wrong with whatever you put in it. I had a build-your-own 2 protein bowl, with salmon, eel, brown rice, shiitake mushroom, mango, edamame, seaweed salad, tobiko, cabbage and pretty much all the toppings. Threw some yuzu ponzu and teriyaki sauce on it and had myself a really light, filling, healthy dinner! I thought the eel especially was really tasty (and an unusual option). The portion is more than enough for me, due to the generous amount of rice. Sure, there's not an overwhelming amount of protein, but I don't need that much; I might have even liked a little less rice to make the ratio of protein:rice better. Poke City was my first Poke experience in Boston and I wasn't disappointed! The things I look for in a good Poke restaurant are freshness and a wide variety of toppings/sides and this place has it all. My friend and I ordered the Poke City Special Bowl with sushi rice which comes with tuna, shrimp, salmon, cumcumber, red onions, scallions, seaweed salad, edamame, pineapple salsa, and special Poke City sauce. They have a TON of toppings that you can add which I was really impressed with including egg and shitake mushroom for free. They gave a generous portion of tuna and salmon and the bowl was huge. The fish was fresh and their pineapple salsa was finger licking good! Also doesn't hurt that all the workers are cute girls. The place isn't big, but there's about 5 small tables to sit at. Hands down one of the best poké bowls I've had-this is coming from a girl who's gone all the way to Yoshino's in San Diego (Yelp Top 100 2015) but also hits up your usual Pokéworks and Love Art Sushi. I started off my DIY bowl with a base of zoodles (such generous portion sizes!) and chose tuna and salmon as my 2 proteins. Add-ins, all for free: seaweed salad, edamame, fresh mango, THE tastiest marinated sliced shiitake, cukes, mango salsa, boiled egg, red cabbage and red onion (felt like I was at Subway, cause I asked for extra shiitake mushrooms). I tried a bit of the sriracha aioli, which surprisingly, wasn't spicy at all, before going with the Poké City house sauce. Lalalaloved my bowl, even though there were so many ingredients. The fresh flavors were distinct and eat forkful had so much texture. I will definitely fill up my loyalty card soon :) Pro-tip: I've found the mayo-based sauces pair better with tuna and salmon than do soy sauce-based dressings like yuzu and ponzu. read more

They have a good selection of toppings (even bonito flakes!) including all the standard ones. One thing I found weird was that they didn't have tamago. I ordered "egg" expecting tamago, but got a hard-boiled eggs instead. Honestly, a big drawback is their rice sucks. I've tried their brown rice and their sushi rice, and both feel kind of mushy. Also, I got the sriracha aioli and the Poke City sauce, and something tasted really sour in the rice. I'm not sure if it was the Poke City sauce or the vinegar in the sushi rice, but something was way too sour. Overall, there are pros and cons. Poke bowls are spreading. From Hawaii to California and now even to Boston! So Poke City near Harvard's campus seems like a good bet to try out the East Coast's take on what is now a West Coast staple; it's a tiny little restaurant with just a few seats, and you go down the line and pick all of the ingredients/toppings you want, or select from a few pre-conceived menu selections. I came for lunch on a weekday, and while I found their offerings decent, the food here doesn't quite compare to the quality you can get elsewhere (especially out West). As the base for your bowl, you can select from rice, salad, or zucchini noodles (a unique offering here, which is fantastic!). I went for half salad and half zucchini noodles, along with a scoop each of salmon and tuna (some pieces turned out to be quite chewy). I chose to have it dressed with the Poke City sauce, but they drizzled on way too much (rather than just mixing it with the fish), and I found that the sauce was somewhat lacking in flavor (it tasted a lot like the mayo-based dressing you get on salads in Japanese restaurants). I finished the bowl off with the delicious crunchy seaweed salad and the creamy kani (imitation crab) salad, along with cucumber, shitake mushroom, edamame, boiled egg, mango, corn, pineapple, jalapeno, scallions, sesame, fried onions, and furikake. I have almost accomplished my goal of trying all the poke places around to find the best one. Unfortunately I don't think poke city is the best. It's good here but I think poke works is better. You get a choice of zucchini noodles, salad, or rice to start off your bowl, followed by fish and then toppings. I think the amount of fish they put in is way less than poke works and when asking for toppings, they only throw a little of each on top. Another thing about poke works is that they ask how much sauce you want. The amount given here is just enough to cover the fish itself, leaving the rest of your bowl plain.
