AMAZING place for sushi-grade fish with great prices. The salmon is consistently excellent. They sell a lot of other stuff to make sushi with (nori, rice vinegar, avocado, sushi mats) as well as other produce for dishes that go with fish (lemons, asparagus, etc.). The service is also great. I wanted to buy some yellowtail but the one behind the counter had started to oxidize, so the guy went to the back and got me some frozen yellowtail. That was amazing. We got the cheaper cut of tuna on one occasion, which I liked a bit less, but next time I'll get the more expensive version and see if I like that better. If you're doing sushi nights with your friends, I find that a quarter pound of fish is enough per person. I got about a pound of salmon and a third of a pound of yellowtail for less than $50. We only got through the salmon, which was enough for four people, and then my husband and I had yellowtail the following night. Which is about ~$8-9 per person for sushi, maybe a little bit more if you add in the other ingredients like rice and nori, but that's still a GREAT deal and much cheaper than going out. read more

I asked if they had salmon and tuna good for sushi and the worker helped me. He even skinned off the salmon and wrapped the skin back for me. Even with the quality being top notch, the prices are actually cheaper than other markets that have similar quality choices. One of my favorite fish market to get sashimi in the area. Own by 3 generations and the owner is so nice and very knowledgeable about where his fish is from. One time I called in and he reserved 3 fresh soft shell crabs for me. I took my 16 years old here one time and he said the fish market was so awesome that it made him want to apply and work here. I ate 2lbs raw as Sashimi before freezing fillets. (FROM 2017)When Wulf's in Brookline closed I never thought I would find a similar replacement. I could not have been more wrong, New Deal is as good or better. Incredible variety and you can't beat the freshness. I buy a 3lb tail section of salmon and we have it over 3 nights and it is still fresh on the 3rd day. If they have the large head on shrimp don't even hesitate, best shrimp I've ever had by far. I also buy fresh tuna and make sushi, never thought I would do this because I'm always hesitant of the quality. Well needless to say I rarely find better sushi grade tuna at any restaurant, and check out their selection of soy sauces, I highly recommend the Kappou Sashimi soy, just unreal. Aside from the fish just walk around at all the other stuff they have; their selection of pasta is outstanding, like Fregula which I had never heard of, now a favorite. And the dried beans, I never buy canned anymore. They have fresh vegetables and fresh herbs. I could go on and on. read more

Where have you been all my life? This place is amazing. I can't believe I haven't come here before. If you love fresh seafood like oysters and sushi, you will love new deal fish market. Everything is really fresh there, they can clean up a fish for you to eat raw! I bought some tuna and salmon. The tuna was about $24.99 / lb, not cheap, but totally worth the price. The salmon was cheaper, and extremely fresh. I brought home the sashimi and made my own sushi. As for the oysters, they are so fresh. They are actually cheaper than the oysters at Starmarket. The oysters at starmarket were about $3 or $3.50 per piece and tasted horrible. Here, they were about $1.50, they even had XL oysters that cost more but were so worth it. The extra large oysters were so huge, and eating them was an orgasmic experience. They actually smelled the oysters and knocked them together (apparently the sound can tell you if the oyster is good) and made sure the oysters were fresh. The folks at starmarket did not do that for sure. You can also grab other things here such as seaweed, rice, some vegetables etc. I want to try to the other seafood next time- they had scallops, fresh lobster, octopus etc. The lobsters were so fresh that they were moving around. New Deal Fish Market is so worth it, the quality and freshness of the seafood can't be beat! read more

Yes it's a little pricer than a Whole Foods or star market but the extra price is worth it both for the quality and the unique options they have. My go to is the salmon or the scallops but everything else looks fantastic. Highly recommend! I just went here with my mom and had a HORRIBLE experience. My mom is the closest person to a fish expert I know. She grew up catching fish and all kinds of shellfish in China and she still goes fishing multiple times per week weather permitting. She could tell that their fish wasn't that fresh (estimated that they were caught many days ago by inspecting their eyes) and being the brutally honest person she is she voiced her opinion. They were really offended by her comment and basically told us that they had been open since 1928 and we better GTFO if we thought their fish wasn't fresh. I don't think being open for a long time necessarily correlates with having super fresh fish...anyways it wasn't just one fishmonger being rude either...pretty much the entire store ganged up on us as we left. They also tried to convince me that their lobster which is 2 lb+ for $12.99 a lb is a better deal than Market Basket's chicken lobsters (1-1.25 lb) for $3.99 a lb. I'm sorry but there is no way I'm going to buy that argument, even if the chicken lobsters are "filled with water" as the guy claimed. We've been buying 5 lobsters multiple times per week from Market Basket and they have always been extremely satisfying. The funny thing is we stopped by Fernandes Fish Market nearby on the way home and my mom made the exact same comment. The fishmonger there was still friendly and courteous and even though we didn't get any fish I am more inclined to visit that place again than go back to BAD DEAL FISH MARKET (prices are exorbitant for the quality of fish and rude service). I've been here a total of 4 times and the past experiences were just average. We mostly purchased Jonah crab and once we also bought some fish roe. We stopped going because we just don't like Jonah crab that much compared to the sweet delicious meat of Maryland blue crab. Needless to say we will not be returning. read more

If someone can't provide good customer service then they are SOL in my book. I'll bring my hard earned dollars elsewhere, thank you. So I needed to purchase a decent amount of seafood but had a couple questions to make sure this place could accommodate my order. They are much more conveniently located than going to the fish markets by the pier so I gave call, I inform the person who answered that I intended to purchase a quantity of product for a special occasion. I went on to say I have a few questions. His response was a rude, gruff "Make it quick, I'm busy today", pretty much verbatim. Well, last time I checked, you usually don't treat customers like that especially if they will be giving you a decent amount of business. I responded with a simple "I think I'll go with someone else". I wouldn't stoop to his level and return the rudeness factor. I've got better things to do with my energy. Then I promptly hung up the phone. Never once was I anything but polite. Needless to say, I took the trek to another market and was well taken care of. New Deal Fish Market is a family business of papa, mama and their son. A lot of clients here are Japanese because fish is sashimi-grade. Pros: Fish you get here is sooooo fresh and yummy! And is incredibly cheap! If you are Japanese they know Japanese names for all the fish, so it's very helpful. The son is especially very helpful, he can suggest you how to cook things too. And believe it or not, they have the BEST Kalamata olives and cheese in town. Forget Whole Foods! If you want seafood/olives/cheese, go to New Deal Fish Market!! I am Japanese and I know my fish. My nationality is born to be snob about fish. When we say they have good seafood, it means they REALLY have excellent seafood. Cons: Parking is not that easy. There are street parking (meter) but only on the main street. The side streets are resident parking only. And the store is closed on Sunday... I can only get there on weekends, so I can only go there on Saturday. But it's family-owned and they need a day off too, so I understand.
